CHAIRMAN / CEO REPORT

W Irene Dorner Chairman, Board of Directors, BritishAmerican Business Group Managing Director and President and CEO, HSBC USA

e are proud to report that BritishAmerican Business recorded another year of substantive growth in FY’13.

Companies maintained their controls on the discretionary spending upon which organizations like ours depend, but also developed an increasing appetite for the high-quality business connections, intelligence and advocacy that we offer to help them compete in the slow-growth environment. So we were able to continue expanding our programming, advocacy work, business services and membership. While maintaining our strong programs of business and policy briefings for our membership at large, we significantly expanded our offering of intimate, high-level occasions, bringing C-Suite executives together with CEOs, thought leaders and government decision-makers to build strategic business relationships and share insights and best practice on key business issues. Reflecting our members’ increasing regulatory concerns, we substantially stepped up our advocacy work with government on a wide range of issues including taxation, financial regulation, immigration, pensions, aviation and patents; and we are taking a leadership role in promoting the prospective EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

Richard Fursland CBE CEO, BritishAmerican Business

We extended our offerings of marketing platforms and business facilitation services in various ways, including through the expansion of our J1-Visa program to enable our members to bring interns as well as employees from anywhere in the world into the United States. Finally, we continued to increase our membership among large multinational companies, as well as the strength of our Board of Directors and International Advisory Board which now includes the leaders of 100 of the world’s most successful companies. The active engagement of our members, Directors and Advisory Board has been – and will continue to be – critical to our continuing growth and success. We very much appreciate this support, and look forward to continuing to work closely with you all throughout the coming year and beyond.

Irene Dorner Chairman, Board of Directors, BritishAmerican Business 2

D

espite the challenging economic environment, BritishAmerican Business reported another year of modest profitability in FY’13, as it has done every year since its establishment in 2001. This represents a considerable achievement.

Increased membership revenues and continuing tight cost-controls were the principal factors behind this positive result. Membership represented about 50% of revenues, with sponsorship providing the majority of the balance. The economic environment is unlikely to become any easier over the coming year. But BritishAmerican Business continues to have the leadership in place to maintain its track record of combining steady, strategic growth with a judicious balancing of its books.

his year, we significantly stepped up the scope, level and reach of our policy work.

We expanded our program of forums with leading government decision-makers on both sides of the Atlantic, and launched a new series of Policymaker Roundtables to bring select groups of senior executives together with senior Ministers and officials to share their priorities and concerns on key policy issues affecting the business community. Our specific advocacy initiatives with government covered a broad range of issues of particular concern to our membership, including taxation, financial regulation, immigration, pensions, patents, aviation and the EU Single Market. We are also taking a leadership role in promoting the prospective EU-US Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP), and the advancement of practical, business-friendly outcomes through the negotiating process. This includes policy recommendations to Government; the launch of a new EU-US Trade & Investment Forum; roadshows in regional business centers; the establishment and staffing of an All-Party Parliamentary Group in London; and the launch of a website focusing on the negotiations. Our credibility and influence with government on policy issues is enhanced by the fact that we speak for a substantial, high-level and broad-based cross-section of the transatlantic business community, including the 2,500 member companies of the British-American Business Council, as well as our own membership.

Peter Sands

Group CEO, Standard Chartered Bank

>> A t a time when there is the danger of greater parochialism in regulation and legislation, we strongly support the work done by BritishAmerican Business in promoting free markets, a level playing field and business-friendly government policies for international business. <<

Mark S. Garvin

Vice Chairman, Corporate & Investment Bank Chairman, Europe J.P.Morgan

>> BritishAmerican Business has played a vital leadership role in building support and momentum behind TTIP, as it has done behind other policy initiatives that are important to the transatlantic business community. <<
