A message from Associate Vice President for Student Success

This has been an extraordinarily productive year for the Student Success Portfolio With support from the Board of Trustees and the President’s Council, the College made significant investments in our area to sustain and enhance efforts pertaining to student mental health and well-being Each of these initiatives ties directly to one or more of the President’s Critical Few Objectives (CFOs):

The investments made to the Student Success Portfolio yielded the following resul CFO/s in bold):

Recruited, hired, and onboarded three new FTE’s, including an additional clinician in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), an additional Student Success Advisor, and a coordinator in Wellness & Prevention Services. 2/3 are diverse hires.

Successfully launched Uwill, a leading teletherapy service that provides wraparound care via teletherapy, a 24/7/365 crisis line, and a library of on-demand educational resources for Babson students that serves as an extension of CAPS Importantly, 25% of licensed clinicians within the Uwill Network are members of the BIPOC community

Enhanced programming through Wellness & Prevention Services, featuring an expansion of the “Be Well, Do Well” series to include: Fresh Check Day (health and wellness fair that focuses on reducing stigma associated with mental health and raising awareness about suicide prevention), Sex in the Dark (an interactive panel presentation regarding sexual health), Love Yourself (health and wellness fair focused on self-care and strategies to manage stress), and twice monthly Wellness Wednesdays that rotate through Horn Library, LGRAC, Olin Hall, and Reynolds Campus Center.

This year’s annual report provides a summary of the work led by each of the six departments within Student Success, including utilization and student satisfaction data, programmatic highlights, new initiatives, and outcomes. Various initiatives will be linked to the CFO’s further demonstrating how well-being is inextricably linked to academic, personal, and professional success.

The Student Success Portfolio includes Accessibility Services (DAS), the Campus Assessment, Response, & Evaluation (CARE) Team, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Health Services (SHS), Religious & Spiritual Life (RSL), Student Advising & Success (SAS), and Wellness & Prevention Services (WPS).

The mission of Accessibility Services is to collaborate with and empower students with disabilities to coordinate support services and programs enabling equal access to an education and college life.

EJ Chen joined Babson in January as a temporary hire and eventually took on the fulltime position of Coordinator for DAS.

Notetaking Highlights for 2023/24

Traditional notetaking is when a student employee takes class notes to supplement the notes for a student with an accommodation. Glean is a software application for notetaking that is installed directly onto a student's laptop. The adoption of Glean, which went live in January, reduces the need for student notetakers.

A defining moment for DAS this year was the inaugural Excellence in Ability, Diversity & Inclusion Awards and Celebration to honor graduating students. It recognized the students and staff within the arena of Accessibility and their hard work and support.

DAS hosted the BOW Consortium in the spring, a collaboration with Wellesley and Olin Colleges. Harvard University also sent representation where guest speakers from the Sanghavi Law Office spoke about disability law and discussions among everyone ensued

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers free consultations, assessments, shortterm biweekly counseling, and referrals for long-term counseling, all designed to empower students to thrive at Babson and beyond.

In September, CAPS on-boarded Daniela Poulat to the clinical team. Daniela is a welcomed teammate, and it further balances staff resources to the student community.

Student Health Services (SHS)

The mission at Health Services is to assist the students of Babson and Olin College of Engineering in maintaining optimum physical and emotional health through the provision of high quality, comprehensive medical care in combination with health education and wellness services that are both easily accessible and cost effective.

New hires for 2023/24

Teresa Mclaughlin joined Health Services at Babson in July of 2023 as the Associate Director.

Ellie Kawa accepted the position of Triage Nurse in Health Services earlier this year.

I felt very comfortable, it was my first appointment alone without my mom scheduling an appointment for me, and I did not feel nervous at all. Even when getting my blood drawn, I am extremely nervous when it comes to needles, she talked me through it, and it helped relieve my anxiousness. Overall, it was a great visit!

Religious & Spiritual Life (RSL)

Religious & Spiritual Life (RSL) fosters a community of belonging, learning and life formation at Babson and beyond. We empower students to cultivate and explore their religious and spiritual identities, while simultaneously sustaining their faith traditions.

New hires for 2023/24

During the fall of 2023, Joseph Finn joined RSL as the Catholic Chaplain.

RSL welcomed Rabbi Craig Marantz in the month of February as the Jewish Chaplain.

Ustadha Maryam Sharrieff became a wonderful addition to RSL as the Muslim Chaplain towards the end of the academic year.

3 Peace Circles were hosted by RSL

Collaborations/coaching opportunities with other institutions regarding the crisis in Israel and Gaza. Institutions include Wellesley College, Harvard, Wake Forest, Louisville, Olin and Tufts. Babson also participated in an antiSemitism symposium hosted by Brandeis University.

Today and in the future months, RSL staff looks to meet students where they are at, including events outside of religious programming.

SAS piloted a new advising approach for specific cohorts where Kathryn supported incoming transfer students while Karina, Kirsten & Brian worked with incoming FirstGen students.

SAS created a new operations manual & calendar for their own internal use to be used to document and introduce efficiencies for many of the processes they are responsible for.

The Student Success advisors initiated a new effort during student orientation to introduce themselves to First Years to effort an increase in initial semester meeting engagement

Wellness & Prevention

WPS leads the college prevention efforts regarding sexual violence and gender-based misconduct, alcohol and other drugs, mental health and emotional well-being, and sexual health. WPS continues to provide direct services to students through advocacy, psychoeducational interventions, and case management

Sophia Eisenhaure was hired as the inaugural Coordinator for WPS in August

Monica Fuentes joined WPS in November as the Assistant Director. Babson is so excited for her addition and a 3-person team at WPS

utilizing the m for 2023/24

WPS developed a new POW initiative asking them to pair up with another team member and execute an event in relation to one of our 4 pillars. As a result, the POWs improved their presence on campus and engaged in meaningful conversations about mental health and well-being with their peers.

WPS identified additional needs of students who disclosed cannabis use to cope with daily stressors, insufficient communication skills, and low ability for self-advocacy. WPS has taken strides to expand motivational interviewing to assist students in identifying effective coping mechanisms and skills.
