Everything is Worldbuilding: Recreating Ancient Africa for Today Exhibit On View January 25–February 19, M-F 9:00 A.M.–5:00 P.M. (EST) Hollister Gallery Inspired by the aesthetics, philosophies and symbol systems of West Africa and the African Diaspora, artist and educator Stephen Hamilton depicts underrepresented narratives through his public art. Hamilton has learned and taught Yoruba Aso Ofi hand weaving and Adire indigo dying, which he combines with western style portrait painting in large scale multimedia installations. This exhibition is a window into the complex process work needed for creating these installations. This body of mixed media drawings offers a window into Ancient West African worlds through the faces of Boston’s Black Community. Access to the exhibit is limited to current students, staff, and faculty approved to be on campus. Instructions to view the exhibit safely will be posted in the gallery. Worldwide Production Supervisor, Disney’s The Lion King Arts and Business Conversation Friday, February 5, 11:00 A.M. (EST) Virtual Presentation FREE and open to the public. Reservations required at babsonarts.org Starting his career Off Off Broadway, Doc Zorthian has toured everything from plays to operas and on Broadway he stage managed Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Crazy for You, and Juan Darién: A Carnival Mass. He started as an Assistant Stage Manager in the original company of Disney’s The Lion King in 1997 and has been with the production ever since. For the last 20 years, Doc has been the Production Supervisor of The Lion King Worldwide, working with a group of talented theatre artists traveling the globe setting up and maintaining all of The Lion King productions. Join us as Doc shares insights from his distinguished career on management styles, cross-cultural relations, and maintaining artistic integrity. The talk will be moderated by Babson’s own Conwell Worthington III, Visiting Lecturer of Marketing/Management. Professor Worthington has held numerous management positions in theater during his 20 year career, including more than four years with Disney’s The Lion King where he worked closely with Mr. Zorthian.

Reservations required at babsonarts.org The Babson community remembers, reflects upon, and celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This event, now in its 18th year, initiates important conversations to continue the realization of King’s vision of justice, equality, and peace in our own community and in the world at large. The program includes a ceremony recognizing students and faculty through leadership and creativity awards. This year’s keynote speaker will be announced in the early spring. Past speakers have included Steve Pemberton, Mónica Ramírez, Bree Newsome, Thomas Chatterton Williams, and Michele Norris.
Chasing Color: Ashland, MA and Nyanza Exhibit on View
March 8–April 23, M-F 9:00 A.M.–5:00 P.M. (EST) Hollister Gallery This exhibition focuses on Dan Borelli’s ongoing artwork in Ashland, Massachusetts and the EPA’s Superfund site, the Nyanza Colorant Plant. This project encompasses research, activism, social engagement, land ownership, and interventions in public space to address the ongoing issue of a local community residing atop a toxic legacy. But in many ways, it also addresses larger questions about human relationships to the environment, stewardship and the concept of long durations. The exhibition will feature a variety of objects and artifacts from the rich and troubling cultural history of the Nyanza Colorant
Plant— one of the first businesses in the U.S. to chemically produce dye for textiles. The exhibition openly explores how color is tied to culture, time, location, optics, and subjectivity. Gender Inclusivity in the Workplace with Josie Kearns Arts and Business Conversation Tuesday, March 16, 6:30 P.M. (EST) Virtual Presentation FREE and open to the public. Reservations required at babsonarts.org With American society increasingly aware of gender identity, successful businesses are recognizing the need to incorporate gender inclusivity into a positive employee culture. Yet individuals’ knowledge and experiences exist on a wide spectrum. This training session will meet each person where they are and help them push forward to find more inclusive practices. Josephine Kearns (she/her) is a consultant, educator, and theater artist specializing in transgender, LGBTQIA+, and intersex identities. In theater, Josie is a pioneer in the field of gender consulting. Her work has included projects with Seattle Rep, Kansas City Rep, Chicago Shakespeare theatre, and the Broadway development process of multiple new musicals centering on gender and sexuality.

Reservations required at babsonarts.org Sorry We Missed You is a powerful drama about an English family trying to patch their life back together after experiencing hardship. Hope comes when the father seizes on an opportunity for self-employment. But as the story of their uphill battle to reclaim financial security and human dignity unfolds, the film reveals itself as a damning indictment of labor exploitation and of the gig economy. A humane portrait of the everyday lives of workers, Sorry We Missed You is consistently poignant and persuasive. Post-screening discussion will be held virtually via Webex and is open to the public. Reservations required at babsonarts.org The Charles D. and Marjorie J. Thompson Visiting Poets Series brings acclaimed poets to the Babson College community. The series honors diversity, inclusion, and artistic excellence. Because of pandemic pressures on travel and gathering size, the 2021 series will integrate remote and live presentation while live streaming. Two poetry events are planned for the spring, making the series even more accessible and engaging to audiences within and beyond Babson College. This workshop will explore the Danish practice of hygge (pronounced “hoo-guh”), a quality of conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment and well-being, by creating an individual votive lantern. Reservations required at babsonarts.org Learn how to use coiled and shaped paper strips to create a design using this easy to pick up centuries old technique. Quilling can be used to create cards or decorate anything from furniture to candles and other home decorations. You will learn the basic techniques to create different shapes and forms to build a wall art piece or to fuel your own design. All materials will be provided.
