EDITOR’S NOTE
Making Dreams A Reality asked me how it will work when she and her sister have different “apartments” when they grow up, and who her daddy and I will live with because she wants us to stay with her forever. Funny thoughts for her to have now, but I broke down into tears too, because I felt so touched to hear that my baby girl loves us so much that she worries about living away from us (she is an extroverted, fun-loving child, who thinks going to school is da bomb, so imagine my surprise when she said she wants to be around her fogies). They say we gravitate to what we want most—to my tummy, that may mean chocolate, cake, In ‘N Out burgers, or sour cream chips with French onion dip—but in BC’s editorial standpoint, two of our goals were realized when we got to feature celebrity reality families that we follow: Tori and Scott are household names, and may also be some of the biggest stars to have programs centered on their personal lives. If you find yourself gushing over Tori and Dean McDermott’s fabulous family, I am totally with you because their kids are absolutely pinch-able and scrumptious. I always find myself grinning when I look at Stella’s angelic face and gummy smile, and Liam’s wide-eyed, innocent, handsome face in their spreads. I am a true Scott Baio fan, thanks to “Charles in Charge” and “Zapped,” but I likewise adore his wife, Renee, who is salt of the earth, like her equally good-looking husband. Their delightful baby Bailey is a scene stealer, and I want to blow raspberries on that cute tummy of hers. Kalyn, Renee’s eldest, is as striking and well-mannered as her mom. Everyone was in high spirits during their photo shoot, so I hope we were able to do justice to how lovely their family is. Sarah Shahi, the headturning and easygoing star of “Life,” is a pleasure to work with. I am happy that she entrusted us with chronicling a day of her glorious first pregnancy, which is a milestone in the stunning actress’, well, life—especially since she is not usually in the public eye. I was in awe of Kathy Ireland as well, who is larger than life not only because of her splendor and towering height, but more so because of her business acumen and sincerity. All these stories are wishes come true for the magazine, and we sincerely thank them all for gracing our 3rd year special. I’d like to mention my undying appreciation to all of BC’s readers. Without your trust in what we humbly call our craft, this is all for naught. And if I could start one of those bleacher waves for our advertisers, I would, because you are truly wonderful for all your support and I wish that you and your businesses be blessed tenfold. To our child models, you are all heaven-sent, and we are extremely happy to have you in BC. By the way, this issue also marks the mid-year. Life is short, and as a parent, I feel the pinch more now because my days with my daughters are fleeting. Twice lately, Sabina (who’s 5) and I were talking and she brought up the subject of my growing old. She was tearful, and

I’ve somewhat prepared myself for my elder years when I will hardly see my kids, but if I can hang on to Sabina’s words now, I may be able to grasp my dream of a lasting relationship with my girls—one that will be tighter than their BFF’s. Many things can change over time, but it is my secret wish to not be left in the hands of a retirement home, or the like—but I would never want to burden my children with caring for me either. Sabina said that she will be too sad if her dad and I pass away (“Mama, does everybody die?”—Maybe all this introspection came out after we saw “Marley and Me,” which we thought was a comedy). My heart filled with adoration for this tiny human being who makes me feel complete in ways that only she and her sister can. As for my Maxine (who’s almost 3), she’s equally attached to us and thinks I’m the cat’s pajamas—and at her age, she never fails to light me up everyday with her beautiful face and intelligence, just like her big sis. You may be saying to yourselves that children need to start early on their independence, but I believe that the foundation for love and togetherness is harder to instill—they will have the rest of their teenage and adult lives to exercise their autonomy. With affection and guidance, we will help see them through their self-awareness, too.

On to the lighter side (not weight-wise, because I have tipped the scale at 170 lbs., pregnancy aside), I’ve been working on blog entries for bc-mag.com under the heading “DYRB,” which means “Dressing Your Rubenesque Body.” It is dedicated to giving ladies in my size (10, and mostly above) tips on working with our dress size and keeping up with trends. When nothing fits, it’s easier to stay indoors and clam up, but since I am also a stylist by profession, I tend to have the eye for things that help me look slimmer, may it be superficially. My waterloo is a perpetually pregnant tummy, so I will see you all in bc-mag.com for postings on how I address my bodily adversary, style-wise. Before I go, please let me wish my husband and Maxine a joyous birthday this July. Without further ado, please allow me to present our next installment of BC. Happy anniversary to us all!

Oh gosh—just looking into the eyes of my children. It’s the love that I receive from them, and the love that I see them give others. When I see them just making good choices on their own and just kind of soaring, that’s really exciting. You have three children. What lessons have you learned about parenting each child?
Each child is so unique. What works for one child doesn’t necessarily work with another. I’ve learned that it’s so important to really focus and listen to them, and take action on what you’re hearing. Your company, Kathy Ireland Worldwide, is one of the biggest licensors in the world. How do you manage your time between that and parenting?
It’s a daily challenge, I can tell you that. I work with an amazing team. Sometimes as women we don’t ask for help. We try to do everything ourselves, and it’s not a good idea. We can get so much more done with a team, focus on our strengths, and get a team to help us in other

areas. I didn’t learn until I was 40 that, “No” is a complete sentence, and “No, thank you,” is better. But as women we feel guilty, we want to do everything, because there are so many good things to do and we want to do it. Oftentimes, we’ve got to say no to good things if we want to do great things. I believe in figuring out your priorities and putting boundaries in place to honor them. When you first started your company, did you ever think it would break the one billion dollar mark, and even have annual sales of about $1.4 billion?
I didn’t think of it in terms of that, in terms of the money, because money is not the motivator. When you do the work right, and you do it with integrity, the money comes. Who among your kids is most likely to go the same career direction?
My 10-year old daughter, Lily, is currently very interested in design. She’s got a great eye. We’ll be shopping and she’ll see a pair of shoes, then she’ll be sketching and coming up with designs. Our son, who’s

She makes me proud. Why did you decide to publish a book called, “Real Solutions for Busy Moms: Your Guide to Success & Sanity?”
I wrote it because I had a lot of problems, and I needed a lot of solutions. It’s really tough being a mom today, more than ever. And when I became one, I learned very quickly that the things that I took for granted, like taking a shower, became a huge luxury. We started around 1993, when I was pregnant with my first child, with a pair of socks. Our mission really is “finding solutions for families, especially busy moms.” Families embrace our brand, so with every product we make, we address our four promises: safety, fashion, quality, and value. The book talks about that, and more. After promos for the book, what are you off to do with your family?
Just be with them. Do what they want to do, play with them. Our youngest is in kindergarten. I snuck her out of school for a little bit this morning. You can do that when they’re really little (laughs). We just did what she wanted to do, played in the garden, watered her watermelons, which she planted. We did puzzles, tried to let her beat me at Scrabble, so it was fun. There is a certain spirituality about you. Have you always been that way?
I became a Christian when I was 18. Without Him, I’d make a really big mess of my life. What is the best piece of advice you can give to entrepreneurs

When you get on an airplane, the flight attendant says [in case of an emergency] to put on your own oxygen mask so you can help others around you. As moms, we’re such nurturers, we’re taking care of everybody else—but when we say that family is our priority, we gotta remember that we are a member of that family too. For entrepreneurs, you’re gonna be pushed and pulled from every direction, so protect the time with your kids. Lastly, with everything going on in your life, how do you maintain your looks?
Thank you, you are very kind. There was a picture in People Magazine a couple of months ago that my son took. He showed it to me and was kinda chuckling a little bit, and my daughter said, “Mom, you look pregnant.” It was not so much the physical appearance, because beautiful people come in all shapes and sizes, color or age, and there was no shame in the weight gain—which was gradual, maybe a pound a year for the last 25 years—and I intentionally built a business that would have nothing to do with my appearance. Health is my motivator. It was more about making healthy choices, and my business partner called me out on that—I was drinking coffee, eating cookies, and I got worried about heart diseases, which is the number 1 killer for women in America, and that an extra 25 lbs can take 10 years off your life. I plan on living to be 102, 120, whatever I’m blessed with—and I want to be able to dance at my great grandkids’ wedding. evi, the handsome 10-month old son of 39-year old actor Matthew McConaughey with girlfriend (Brazilian designer and model) Camila Alves, 27, is learning how to walk—and was taking one wet step after another in Malibu the day before Memorial Day. Blessed with beautiful weather, the beach is always the perfect venue for this family to bond, as they enjoyed a picnic lunch together with some pals and their beloved dog, BJ. The “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” hottie, who is a famous water-lover, reportedly had a customized surfboard designed for his mini-me, and puts him on top of it while making ocean sounds in the background. Fatherhood certainly becomes the actor, as his Just Keep Livin’ Foundation is, “dedicated to helping teenage kids lead active lives and make healthy choices so they can become great men and women.” On the topic of parenting, he tells E! Online in an interview that, “I never pretended to know much about it beforehand, but once Levi came around, it all came to me pretty easy...I’m not saying it’s not easy, but your instincts take over.”
