editor’s note

bc-mag.com

bc-mag.com Birthdays, all around If you’ve never heard of the term “Minnesota nice,” then let me introduce you to whom should be its poster girl: our cover mom, Samantha Harris. I’ve met Samantha several times, and she’s consistently charming and well-mannered. I lived in Minneapolis for over a month for work, and the people are welcoming and polite—even in the dead of winter. However, this doesn’t mean that nice girls finish last, because on the homefront alone, Samantha is every bit a success. Each time I come across her, she is never without one or both of her kids, and they seem extremely tight-knit. Her career as a TV host is one to envy, plus she has a body that does not look like it’s had a run-in with pregnancy nor childbirth. And because it’s our anniversary issue, we decided to fill it with another sweet momma, none other than actress Elisabeth Rohm. I think she was still pregnant with Easton when I last saw her, and she’s always a delight to bump into. I look forward to viewing Elisabeth’s upcoming films, and wish that like her, I had the discipline to work out despite a crazy work schedule. I used to watch the earlier seasons of Project Runway, so I’m very familiar with designer Jeffrey Sebelia’s work. I always believed he had talent, and now that he has entered the family realm, I am totally digging (feels like the most apropos term) his clothing line for children called La Miniatura. One of my favorite stories in this issue is “The Art of Being Unconditionally Happy,” which is a road less traveled for many (myself included). Because preparedness for us moms is key, we decided to do some adorable pre-Halloween recipes and

crafts. I’m serving the toothy apples for sure, because they look hilarious and are delicious. This year, we were fortunate to be around the water. We got a house with a pool, traveled to the Camiguin islands in the Philippines, and I taught my daughters how to be independent swimmers, which I consider one of my shining moments as a mother. I hope you’re all having a wonderful summer, and are ready to hit the books soon with the kids all over again. It signals the start of the birthday season in my family when my older daughter asks me why she was born later in the year, and has to celebrate last among all of us—including our 10year old Lab. This year, my youngest, Maxine, luckily had three parties for her: a small princess makeover with her first cousins just so Grandma (who had to go back home) can be with us, another in school just for her classmates, and a joint celebration with my husband for relatives and friends. I celebrate mine on August 15th, and will have a quiet one at home, munching on chocolate wafers. This recent party mode has set the bar for my eldest, Sabina, so expect me to have an October of tireless, party-planning again. They’re pretty simple ones, but any event-organizing takes its toll—especially since I’m now in my mid-30’s, and my joints aren’t exactly tip-top. Speaking of age, happy 5th anniversary to our baby, BC. It all goes by fast. Here’s lookin’ at you, kid...

jeffrey sebelia For the Project Runway season three winner, the road to success as a fashion designer was coupled with a troubled past and a battle with drug addiction. Learn how he beat the odds to reinvent himself as one of today’s most sought after young designers (who also serves as just ‘dad’ to his little one, harrison) with the recently released La Miniatura worDs by valerie anne del castillo and Jona conoPio

eing creative begets more creativity,” is the profound assessment of Jeffrey Sebelia on his journey from musician to seasoned fashion designer. He’s best known for his stint as the punk-rocker with the clawing wit who won Project Runway’s third season, but underneath the tattoos is a man who’s truly driven by passion for his craft—and a father, at that.

Sebelia has told of a troubled childhood and a faded musical career that forced him to work behind the scenes, which eventually led to a battle with depression and drug dependency. He found his calling as a designer, thus joining Project Runway after much encouragement from season two alum, Santino Rice. There, his upfront personality and inherent talent soon earned him notoriety, and the title of season three champ. To date, his roster of clients include the likes of Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Tommy Lee, Madonna, and his long-time friends (Linkin Park frontman) Chester Bennington and Dave Navarro. Aside from keeping up with his pre-Runway line, Cosa Nostra, Sebelia has recently come up with a 70’s to 80’s-inspired children’s line called La Miniatura. BC gives you the exclusive on this new collection and how he managed to overcome his personal struggles and refocus his creativity, all while being a dad to adorable (and fashionable) Harrison. What was your biggest inspiration while you were growing up? What sparked your interest in fashion?

It was music, and music videos. I loved all kinds of music and fashion, from Led Zeppelin to David Bowie, etc. My favorite albums when I was 10 years old were Kiss’ Alive!, Elvis Presley hits, Celebrate! by Kool

14

& the Gang, and Pink Floyd’s The Wall. I wanted to look like the rock and pop stars that moved me with their songs. I also like military uniforms and taking things that are special but have very practical use, like Polo shirts, and sports jerseys. You admittedly had a difficult past,

dealing with depression and drug dependency. How did you focus your energies on your creative outlet?

Being creative has always been cathartic for me, and has always served as a way for me to express myself, and focus my energy very positively. But I found that I had to address my personal need to change in

b c { ANNIVERSARY 2011 } bc-mag.com

9/20/11 11:41 AM

bc-mag.com order to be creative. Can you tell us more about your friendship with Dave Navarro and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park? Did they help jumpstart your career as a designer?

I met Dave years ago while in my band Lifter. He played live with us, and even made an appearance in one of our music videos. Personally, I think Dave needs a makeover. I’m so bored by how he dresses. And Chester is someone I’ve gotten to work with and know because of fashion. I’ve made clothes for Linkin Park, Julien K and Dead by Sunrise tours and videos. But it was actually Ron Herman that jumpstarted my career as a designer—and then Maxfield. But when I started, Ron Herman was the first store that bought Cosa Nostra. It was exciting because the sales people would call me and say, “Winona Rider, Shalom Harlow, and Elton John all just bought your jackets. And we need more.” This is how the word got out so quickly. How did you make the decision to try out for the third season of Project Runway? Did you see yourself winning the competition?

Making the decision to do Project Runway was pretty easy—watching season two inspired me a lot, so when the opportunity came up, I decided that I was fortunate to be part of such a select group. I wanted the chance to win and be on television and show people what I can do. Who is your favorite Project Runway judge? How has she/he influenced you as a designer?

Nina Garcia was my favorite judge because she seemed to have the most useful advice. Her perspective on fashion is one of a

magazine editor, and in order to [do] that job, one has to be like a fashion historian. She must know a lot about fashion. You also have a background in music. How do you think this helped in your creative process as a designer?

I think being creative begets more creativity. My love for music comes from the same place as my love for design—it is hard wired into me. Plus, I think music has become one of the most influential subcultures to affect fashion in the last 50 years. What inspired you to come up with a children’s line?

The idea for a children’s line came from my friend, Mel [Melissa Bochco], which was inspired from being a parent and not being happy with the current state of children’s fashion choices. Why did you choose the 70’s to 80’s era to inspire La Miniatura? What are the qualities of fashion in that era that you implemented in your line today?

I grew up through the ‘70s and ‘80s, and a lot of what I like to design comes from a place of wanting to share the things I liked—but that had as much to do with where I was raised, as when. Being from Southern California, I have a big tendency toward surf culture, camping, rock and roll, and the idea of personal freedom. Think of the Beach Boys, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, or the movie, The Mask. I was raised with Levi’s, corduroy, and suits for the holidays. I also went to Catholic school when I was younger, so I kinda love navy and khaki twill uniform pants. Some of the older punk-rockers would peg the legs to make them fitted and cool-looking, so that’s what I’ve done for La Miniatura. My

bc-mag.com family was lower/middle class—my mother raised three kids by herself—and so we shopped at places like Zody’s and Target, long before Target was cool. Most people these days don’t remember when Target was considered awful. What sets both your lines apart from the competition?

That’s not for me to say. How does the kids' line complement Cosa Nostra?

La Miniatura is almost a miniature version of what Cosa Nostra men’s would be like today. Your neck tattoo is said to mean, “Harrison Detroit is the love of my life.” Describe your relationship with your son.

Everyday my thoughts are toward making the world a better place for my son and his friends. And from that, he and I learn from each other. What do you enjoy doing most with your son?

I love playing chess with Harrison, or taking him to the park to play baseball. You and the mother of your son are separated. How are you managing parenting without her?

Quite well. What’s the best thing about being a father?

All of the love I get to give and receive. What is the most important lesson you would like to teach your child?

To have true gratitude for everyone and everything in his life…and to not be lazy.

helsea is an attorney and mother of two teen girls. Her career, although rewarding, is demanding, and she often finds herself feeling drained at the end of the day when she needs to be there for her kids. Each time Chelsea sets a goal at work or home, she promises herself that if she reaches it, she will be happy. Yet when she attains the goal, she immediately reaches for the next horizon, telling herself that if she allows herself to be happy she’ll become complacent. Chelsea wants to encourage her children, instilling them with an invigorating sense of accomplishment so they can excel, but fears that her pep talks are only empty words as a result of her burnout. Chelsea tells herself she will be happy when her daughters are accepted to top universities, and is currently pushing toward that milestone. But she secretly worries that happiness will continue to evade her even if her daughters breeze through their SAT’s and she reaches the very top of her field.

h a p p y day s Bethany, Chelsea’s neighbor, is a financial advisor with two teen daughters and a 12-year old son. Chelsea can’t help but notice how enthusiastic Bethany is, and how she seems to inspire and energize her three children by simply spending time with them. Bethany’s sense of humor is infectious, and her family members reflect her funloving attitude. She and her kids always appear to be focused and directed, yet relaxed, even during hectic times and economic downturns. Bethany seems to derive a great deal of satisfaction and happiness from all aspects of her home life and career, yet Chelsea knows Bethany’s career presents similar challenges to her own. Chelsea wonders why Bethany never seems to suffer from burnout. She wishes she knew her secret. Bethany’s secret is the art of being unconditionally happy. Happiness is a state of being. It is a way of thinking, a conscious choice. Lots of people think the “pursuit of happiness” is a linear process, so they live in a state of expectancy, or hope of happiness arriving…some day. They pursue, hoping to some day overtake happiness when the conditions are perfect. But you can experience happiness in the present moment, without waiting, if you give yourself permission—in the moment. There is no need to meet any requirement, fulfill any quota, or compete with rivals in order to allow yourself the liberty of carrying unconditional happiness inside you every moment of the day. You are calling the shots here—your life is yours alone to experience. Here are three strategies you can employ to discover and develop the art of unconditional happiness: recogniZe that happineSS iS aVailaBle

One way to increase your “now awareness” is to take a break, a vacation, or a sabbatical. Set aside a few minutes during the day to focus completely on the now, the present moment. Relax, and become conscious of your breathing. Channel your mental energy away from thoughts and inner dialogue—allow yourself to simply be here now. Observe your inner and outer environment, without judging anything. Accept sensory input, or the lack of it, as what is, as part of the moment. Listen to the background noise in your home or office. Experience your emotions, your physical sensations, and a sense of your body. Look at your hands, your kitchen table—or close your eyes, if you like. The object of this exercise is to experience life in the moment, unfettered by thoughts of past or future. Consciously relax the muscles in your neck and shoulders, and practice letting go of your tension. You can do this exercise while taking a coffee break, in the garden, or in a brief moment in your office, door closed if

noW, in the preSent moment.

you need it. In the moment, practice smiling, inwardly, outwardly, or both, without feeling the need to justify it. chooSe to thinK poSitiVe, Self-enhancing thoughtS. Begin by making a list of at least five self-enhancing statements, or affirmations. These statements may describe both skills or qualities you already possess and those you aspire to develop. When you compose this list, make sure you describe yourself in present tense, for instance, “I am enthusiastic about my life,” rather than, “I will be enthusiastic about my life.” Be generous with yourself—be your own cheerleading squad. Read your list aloud to yourself, preferably each night before sleeping. When you read or recite your self-enhancing statements, practice accessing feelings of love, happiness, peace, satisfaction or joy. The idea of this exercise is to become conscious of, and to emphasize, all the attributes you bring with you into your workplace, your thought life, and your personal life. harneSS the poWer of the moment to chooSe happineSS. Once you recognize the significance of the present moment, you can begin making the conscious choice to be happy. This is not a process of denying the existence of stress at work or at home, a boss that is difficult, or a child’s struggles in school. It is the process of accepting and acknowledging the existence of beauty, love, gratitude, and happiness, even when pain and problems present themselves. Often, people find it easier to accept negative aspects of life than to accept all the positive forces surrounding them. Breathe in slowly, breathe out, and make this declaration to yourself: “Happiness is here, it’s free, accessible, and unconditional. It is mine any time I want it. I give myself permission to enjoy unconditional happiness. I don’t need any obvious reason to be happy! I can experience happiness during times of hardship as well as prosperity, loss as well as gain, difficulty as well as ease. Happiness is the state of my being—it is where I reside!”

Having made your declaration of independence from conditional happiness, start walking the walk. Be mindful of increased options, choosing to think optimistic, kind, loving, generous, and forgiving thoughts as you move through life. Let go of the burdens of self-doubt, of comparing yourself or your children to others, and fearing the future. The future is born of the present. Begin a love affair with the present moment, consciously accept life as enough in itself, and slip into the joy of being alive. Feel better? That’s unconditional happiness. bc

hile we're embracing the sights, sounds, and tastes of summer, health risks are also around the corner, waiting for the right time to strike—and its effects can follow us well after the season has passed. Protect your family from the sicknesses that surface along with the changing seasons, with these helpful tips.

Watch Your temperature

Rigorous activities such as sports can bring about heat exhaustion, especially if you’re exposed to high temperatures for a long period of time. It may lead to heat stroke, a more serious condition in which the body could no longer regulate its temperature because of extreme hotness or exertion under very warm temperatures. If physical activities cannot be avoided, schedule them early in the morning, or late in the afternoon. Remember that the sun’s UV rays are most intense between 10 AM and 4 PM. Keep DrinKing (the gooD Stuff)

In order to prevent such illnesses from occurring, keep your body hydrated by drinking sufficient amounts of water, juices, and other fluids. Minimize the intake of foods that are high in caffeine, alcohol, or sugar, for these also contribute to dehydration. Eat light and right—go for fresh fruits and vegetables with a lot of water content. Consuming generous amounts of liquids can also help reduce the risk of developing kidney and urinary tract infection (U.T.I.), and constipation. Watch What You eat

Dine in establishments with sanitary certifications, and avoid purchasing food from street vendors. The heat increases the proliferation rate of certain bacteria in food, causing it to become rotten faster. Such impurities can cause diarrhea, typhoid, and hepatitis A. Whether at home or outdoors, properly store food in clean containers, to avoid contamination. Dispose of leftovers accordingly, and make sure that utensils are thoroughly cleaned and sterilized as well. StaY in the ShaDe

Apply sunblock for those days when you can’t avoid being under sunlight. For those with sensitive skin, check the label for hypoallergenic materials, and

consult your dermatologist for other gentle options. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays not only causes sunburn, but also puts you at higher risk for skin problems such as second-degree burns (that may lead to infection when blisters are formed), uneven skin tone, early aging, pigmentation, and skin cancer. Apply virgin coconut oil or natural lip products to avoid chapped, windblown, and dry lips. Wear loose-fitting shirts with light colors, and seek shade as much as possible. Commonly occurring in very young children, miliaria or heat rash is the blockage of sweat ducts caused by very warm weather and excessive perspiring. Younger kids and infants are more prone to developing heat rash during the hot days because their sweat ducts are immature, and can easily trap perspiration underneath the skin. To avoid, keep your children in cool and well-ventilated areas. Avoid applying creams and other lotions that may further clog your child’s pores, and use prickly heat powder (preferably talc-free) instead. protect Your eYeS

The heat and sunlight can also pose as a threat to your eyes. Use sunglasses with UV protection, and make sure to clean them regularly before use. Sore or pink eye is a viral infection that can be passed along through hand to eye contact. Train your kids to wash their hands frequently. Disinfect surfaces, doorknobs, light switches, telephones, computers, gadgets, and remote controls, to avoid the spread of germs. Wear wide-rimmed hats and shades during those hot days to prevent cataracts from developing. While cataracts often occur later in life, prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays increase the risk of damage to the eye’s

lenses. For itchy eyes in children, ask your pediatrician or opthalmologist for a mild opthalmic solution. The primary step to keeping healthy is proper hygiene, and a well-balanced diet. While we may not control the heat of the sun, or the transmission of germs around us, we can take an active approach in making sure our kids get the best protection they can get. bc

Our beloved animals get affected by the change in weather as well, so ensure that they are hydrated and kept away from direct sunlight or heat. Always have water readily available, and limit their exercise so they don’t get too exhausted. For dogs, watch out for hot spots, a pesky skin inflammation that gives them bald, uncomfortable sores. Limit time outdoors; early morning and evening hours are ideal for playtime. Be especially mindful of pooches that have short, pushed-in faces like pugs and bulldogs, puppies and elderly pets, as they are more prone to heatstroke.

On the beginnings of Stella Cove

I wince at having to use the cliché, but Stella Cove really did start “at the kitchen table” just over two years ago, and is now stocked in around 300 boutiques and resorts in 20 countries, including Harrods London, Le Bon Marche Paris, Four Seasons Hawaii, The Fontainebleau Hotel Miami, Harvey Nichols Dubai, as well as being the personal pick of Kourtney Kardashian, and a certain European princess. How the philosophy behind it was formed

At the heart of Stella Cove is that one exquisite swimsuit which we had as a child, that made us stand a little taller, and made us feel like the sun was shining particularly bright for us, inspired by the classic romantic aesthetics of Jackie O, as seen through a modern day perspective. Stella Cove is Holly Golightly at a Coldplay concert. How they came up with the idea to create headturning mommy-and-child resortwear

The backdrop to the start was the sudden onset of the banking crisis. Chaos was snowballing, and uncertainty was looming large. With a background of working in the business side of hotel management, and as an attorney respectively, Amber and I have the unfortunate ability to cynically and critically stare down any idea at the best of times. Perhaps it was the surrounding crisis at the time which caused a sudden shift in our attitudes. The conversation at the kitchen took an unexpected turn along the lines of, Pia: “Let’s make...” Amber: “A really beautiful swimsuit.” With the naive enthusiasm akin to the Scooby Doo gang, we jumped into the car and set off in the vague direction of a factory we had heard of, leaving behind our husbands who

were exchanging looks of amusement and alarm in equal measure. Perhaps this is one of the interesting aspects of the human reaction to beauty and great design. A person can be caught up in some heavy ruminations of a practical nature, but will still pick up to admire a particularly shimmering seashell. On the evolution of the brand, and future plans

Stella Cove has now evolved to embrace the most delicious sunglasses collection, a teen collection for the most discerning young woman between 12 and 16 years old, as well as board shorts for all gentlemen between 2 and 100 years plus. Smitten by the process of creating beautiful little things, we are set to add some products well beyond the swimsuit. Feedback from customers

One of the most delightful surprises which always bowl us over is the fact that our customers take the time out to write us the loveliest emails, telling us how much they love Stella Cove. Our inspiration is now our customers. We remember some of them by their names, and as we assess new products, we refer to the individual customers—“Oh, Mrs. Howell and her daughters are going to LOVE those sunglasses.” Their strengths as a brand

Our emphasis is on long-lasting, high quality—ensuring that the beachwear lasts beyond the summer, and looks fresh in the suitcase for the escape to the sun after winter. As for your question on what sets us apart from the competition, I really don’t know. There is such an impressive range of incredibly beautiful products out there, and we are just grateful and lucky that Stella Cove has found a place among them. bc bc-mag.com { ANNIVERSARY 2011 } b c

reastfeeding is one of the best choices moms can make for their newborn, as it provides babies with a special kind of care through naturally-produced substances that help protect your child from certain illnesses. Apart from that, the bonding moments are irreplaceable. It also increases the amounts of oxytocin produced in a woman’s body, making you more relaxed and calm. Nursing has also been linked to lowered risks of postpartum depression, ovarian and breast cancer. Because busy mothers are not always available to breastfeed their child, thankfully there are now a number of great innovations in the market that help support breastfeeding. Breast pumps are heavensent devices that extract and store breast milk for later use. For mothers who need to go back to work, are frequently traveling, or are not physically available to breastfeed their child at all times, breast pumps are the next best thing to help store and deliver the benefits of breast milk to your little one.

22

The three basic types are manual, battery-operated, and electric pumps. With a wide array to choose from, how do we select just one? Here is where lifestyle, budget, and needs come into play. First to be considered when investing in breast pumps is the frequency of pumping, and the time it takes to express milk. Do you need a breast pump that you will use frequently, to save up milk supply for your child while you’re away working, or do you seldom pump? For busy moms who are pressed for time, an electric pump can efficiently and quickly collect milk. Battery-operated pumps also feature the same efficiency, but provide the convenience of mobility, enabling moms to express milk almost anywhere, anytime. Like battery-operated ones, manual pumps also provide mobility and the convenience of pumping in your own pace. If you’re particular with the noise the electric devices emit (maybe you need to express milk while on a plane, or in other public areas), you can go with the ones designed for more silent milk extraction, or use the manual pump instead.

pump it up Borrowing or buying used breast pumps is discouraged by other moms for sanitary reasons. While it may be a cost-efficient way to save your breast milk, it may pose as a health risk to your child— in the event that a previous user was infected by a virus or illness, there may be a chance that it can be passed on to the next user’s child. Such viruses are pathogens like the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis, and cytomegalovirus (CMV), among others. Sterilization may not be enough to eliminate these impurities from breast pump parts that were exposed to the previous mother’s breast milk. In the United States, the resale of used breast pumps is strictly prohibited by the FDA. The proper usage of breast pumps ensures optimal milk expression, and prevents damage to your breasts. This is why it is vital to have a

working knowledge on how to correctly use a breast pump, regardless of its type or brand. If your breasts begin to bleed and/or ache during a pumping session, immediately stop pumping and go to your doctor for advice. Breast pumps are not a “one size fits all” type of machine, which is why moms should look for one that, aside from addressing your needs as a breastfeeding mother, is also comfortable to use. A support group is also important for breastfeeding moms, as it is the community and venue to air our concerns. Of course, it is still best to consult our doctors, but sharing experiences and advice with other parents can help broaden our knowledge. Another important tip for moms who are looking to invest in a breast pump is to canvass. Take the time to educate yourself and look at breast pumps from various brands in the market, and choose one that best fits your needs. bc

1. Read the manual before operating the breast pump. Get to know your breast pump by understanding the instruction booklet and familiarizing yourself with its parts and how each of them work. Follow the assembly instructions and try putting it together ahead of time to get acquainted with the process. 2. Always wash your hands before operating the breast pump. Make sure that it is also thoroughly cleaned before using. Each piece that came in contact with the milk, and your breast must also be washed, cleaned, and sterilized after use. Store

your breast pump and its parts and accessories properly to avoid damage or misuse. 3. Create an atmosphere conducive for milk expression. If you’re comfortable in a particular chair or corner in a room, save that spot for your routine. Always have with you an item of your baby’s, like a photo, blanket or shirt, as the sight or scent of it can help stimulate your “letdown,” and milk-producing hormones. You can also plug in your iPod and listen to soothing music while you pump. 4. Take a moment to gently

massage your breasts before milk expression. You can also apply warm compresses to your breasts and lean forward to the direction of gravity, as this helps in milk let down. 5. Wear clothing that provides easy access to your breasts. There are various nursing blouses that don’t compromise fashion for functionality. Nursing bras are also great investments. 6. If your nipples get sore from pumping, emollient creams or oils can help soothe reddened or cracked nipples. The safest would be extra virgin coconut oil.

More noteworthy, Elisabeth Rohm’s most famous on-screen role to date is of a stunning A.D.A. on Law & Order. BC: Describe your years growing up. What were your biggest dreams as a little girl? Elisabeth: I was raised by a textbook hippie, so my childhood

was about nature, meaning the outdoors and animals. Back then, my biggest dream was to work with animals, like being a vet or something of that nature. I was all about horses, dogs, and creatures. BC: You were born in Düsseldorf, migrated to New York, then moved to Connecticut, then finally to Southern California. E: I really didn’t move around a lot. I was born in Germany and

moved to NY when I was 1-year old. I attended high school and college in New York, so I had a very stable childhood in New York. However, I love being bicoastal.

BC: Is it true that you went to boarding school? Would you like your child to experience that as well? E: Yes, I went to boarding school in Tennessee. I loved it! I feel

that boarding school is a good experience and works for some

families, and I was one of them. However, would I want my daughter to attend boarding school? Absolutely not, because I don’t want to lose a single minute with her. BC: How was your foray into acting like? What was the biggest challenge of breaking into the industry? E: I don’t want to give the impression that it was easy because I

have certainly worked very hard in my career, but it kind of just came to me. I got an acting job right out of college on One Life to Live and then it just snowballed from there. It taught me an important lesson in life, and that is if you’re experiencing a lot of resistance, to me that’s a sign. It’s like a relationship—if you’re in a relationship and you’re constantly fighting with someone, that’s a sign that it’s not meant to be—it’s the same thing with acting. Luckily for me, acting just came naturally, and I have worked extremely hard to be successful in this business.

bc-mag.com you share with your character? E: One thing I really have in common with Serena is that I’m a

guilty idealist. I refuse to be a realist, and I expect the best from the human race. Also, I like to keep my personal life outside of the office, which is why you won’t find me in the weeklies very often.

BC: What is your favorite memory about the series? E: The morning of my last day of shooting, I rolled into the studio

with my usual Diet Coke in hand—which is such a disgusting habit that I no longer partake in—and when I looked up, every single person on the stage, about 100 people, were wearing blond wigs and holding Diet Cokes. (Laughs) It made me realize that I had an addiction that I needed to break. I have become more of a health nut since then.

BC: Your mother was scriptwriter Lisa Loverde. How has she inspired you as a writer yourself? E: My mother was an incredible writer, a deep intellectual, and

a very spiritual person. Because she was such a wonderful writer and even more importantly, person—I am influenced by her, every second of every day. I continue to keep up with my writing in memory of her.

BC: Can you tell us more about your novels, Nerissa and Desire? E: I’m still finishing Desire, which is about a young pediatrician

who goes to Haiti to find the nanny who raised her as a child in

26

New Orleans. Nerissa is available now on Amazon.com and tells the story of a young female painter struggling under oppression in Scotland. I’m interested mostly in coming-of-age stories about strong women and female empowerment. BC: You have five feature films pending release, including the highly-anticipated Abduction due out in September. What do you love most about this project? E: The part of working on this film that I anticipated the most was

just being a part of this movie that the brilliant John Singleton has crafted. He’s such a genius!

BC: You’re into horseback riding. How do you manage being a mom while leading an active lifestyle? E: I have to say I have definitely sidelined horseback riding

since having my daughter, Easton. I still try to ride at least once a month. I don’t have many extracurricular activities outside of motherhood and working. I barely have time for anything else. I’m lucky if I make it to my gym (that I am an investor in), Circuit Works, in Brentwood, CA.

BC: You reportedly love to cook. How important is it to you as a mother to properly guide your daughter to have better food choices? E: I got a great piece of advice when I first started struggling with

Easton’s selective food choices, and that was to tirelessly introduce on a daily basis what she previously rejected. For example, my

I’ve noticed that as I kept giving them to her, she eventually gave in and came around—so you just can’t give up. BC: What is your no-fail recipe? E: Grilling! It’s fun, it feels like a party, you get to eat outside, the

kids love corn, and you can grill anything and make it a thousand times tastier.

BC: Can you tell us more about your daughter’s name, “Easton August Anthony”? E: We were going to name her “Grace”—it was the only name we

could agree on. Then, I had a dream: in the dream, I picked her up from my best friend, actress Tasha Smith’s house. I said to Tasha, “How was she?” and she said “She was great,” but laughing she said, “She wouldn’t let me call her Grace, she told me I had to call her Easton all weekend.” So I said, “Grace! Mommy’s here!” and she wouldn’t turn around, so I said it again and she still wouldn’t turn around. So then I said, “Easton! Mommy’s here!” and she finally turned around. In the morning I shared my dream with my family, and we all decided it was fate.

BC: How do you and your husband, Ron Anthony divide parenting duties? E: We’re really harmonious in our parenting styles. We are very

consistent and involved. We don’t have a nanny anymore, so we’re doing it by ourselves now. Ron’s better at disciplining her, I’m the spoiler. I’d rather take her for a good time and shopping than correct her.

BC: What do you enjoy shopping for the most for your daughter? E: Pretty much anything. (Laughs) I’m a guilty clothes and shoes

regnancy is a beautiful thing. Your body as a woman is tested to its limits—internal body parts squished together in tight spaces but are expected to work double time to sustain two (or possibly, more) lives, weight gain, hormones on overdrive and mood swings. Although it is an amazing experience, it’s not all fun. The nausea alone can attest to that. With everything that’s happening, it’s difficult to feel sexy and desirable. First of all, let me make one thing clear: You are not a freak for thinking about sex while you’re pregnant. With your hormones going crazy, it’s perfectly fine to be turned on. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I have never felt more in tune with my sexuality. I confidently wore a tiny bikini when I was 8 months pregnant—something that I wouldn’t touch with a barbecue stick when I wasn’t. Thank goodness we live in a time when there are more wardrobe options for expectant mothers. I totally rocked that camo string bikini, if I do say so myself. Besides, I had bigger boobs when I was pregnant, therefore I filled out the bikini top much better than when I wasn’t. Boo-yah. Since I’m the token go-to person for all unusual questions (I had someone ask me how “muscle control” works and how to do it—with a banana. Totally hilarious story, but I digress), I have had friends ask me about sex during pregnancy. Although most of the questions they have can be answered medically, most of the beliefs about pregnant sex are just myths, and some are even ludicrous. My favorite so far is the myth that babies grow faster if you have sex during pregnancy. You can’t make your baby grow faster but with a good and active sex life even during pregnancy, it may just help make the nine months go by faster.

intimacy WhY Do i feel thiS WaY?

Hormones are produced differently in every trimester. (So, be comforted in the fact that you won’t turn into a raging nympho when the second trimester comes rolling in). While you don’t have any interest in sex during your first trimester, your libido might take a sudden increase during your second or third. It’s important to talk to your partner about this. Pregnancy is perceived differently by men, with views coming from the opposite sides of the spectrum. It’s not that they’re totally disinterested, but they might have some fears and reservations that just need to be answered. Intimacy, in the literal and figurative sense, is important during pregnancy. You need to be able to connect with each other on a physical and emotional level as a couple without a child to be able to communicate properly and be a team when you become parents. lacK of guiDelineS

It beggars belief that we don’t talk about this issue. Pregnant sex isn’t something to be ashamed of. I’m not ashamed I tried it. So what if I can’t see my feet or walk without waddling? I was feeling more sexy and I wanted to do the horizontal tango—why is it so wrong? If I were to take every single cultural belief, religious view, and social stigma about pregnant sex, I’d be having a breakdown. I did have to deal with leaking

breasts but it was nothing that a couple of tissues or wet wipes and a good laugh couldn’t handle. There’s a lack of guidelines on sex in pregnancy. Doctors are no exception, as they can add to the confusion. One physician said “yes to pregnant sex but no to orgasms” while another doctor said “yes to pregnant sex, but only with a condom.” So yeah, you can have pregnant sex, just don’t enjoy it. What’s the point then? Any therapist worth his or her salt will tell you that sex is an integral part of any relationship and it shouldn’t take a backseat just because you’re pregnant (pregnancy complications notwithstanding). The most important step is to involve your partner and your doctor. Communication is always better and has better results than sweeping it under the rug. Don’t force the issue though. If you or your partner aren’t comfortable with it, there are other options. There’s more to a sexual relationship than

intercourse. Share your needs and concerns with your partner in an open and loving way. If sex is difficult, unappealing or off-limits, try cuddling, kissing, or a massage. Flowers and chocolates and a lot of flattery also help, trust me. Our bodies are changing, and there are a lot of issues that may crop up, and we need all the support, love, and attention that she can get. Connecting with your partner doesn’t have to be about sex. You can resume your bedroom activities after the baby is born. Whatever your concerns are, they can be resolved and appeased by talking to your doctor and your partner. It also helps to talk to other women who may have had the same experience—if they ever talk about it, that is. Okay, maybe not during your Gymboree class, but you can discuss it with your other close girlfriends who are or have been pregnant. The internet is also a great resource for information about sex during pregnancy. Just try to stay away from porn sites as there’s nothing really informative there (not that I’ve tried, okay?) The point is, if you’re comfortable with it and you want to try it, why the hell not? If Demi and Britney posed in the nude while pregnant, maybe we can also start liberating people about pregnant sex. So go on, get jiggy with your full belly.

common misconceptions SafetY of the BaBY

One of the biggest concerns about sex during pregnancy is the safety of the baby. Would the baby be harmed? OB-GYN Dr. Lisa Salita states that, “Sex during pregnancy is perfectly safe so long as there are no predetermined complications such as placenta previa, vaginal discomfort or bleeding, high risk pregnancies that will result in premature labor, or a weak cervix.” The thick mucus plug that seals the cervix will prevent your partner’s penis from ever coming into contact with the baby, and helps guard against infection, while the amniotic sac and strong uterine muscles also protect your baby. If anything, the motion will actually rock the baby to sleep. Don’t worry if the baby suddenly becomes active during or after the deed. It’s not your baby letting you know that he knew exactly what went on. Trust me, there are no accusations. It’s not because the baby’s in pain, either. It’s your heart pumping blood faster around your body, therefore making your baby more active. comfort

Another concern is the level of comfort while doing the deed. Most couples are concerned that they wouldn’t be able to find a position that’s comfortable enough. I say this is a perfect time to get creative! Not too creative though, better leave that to after you give birth—and that’s a whole different article altogether. With a little experimenting, you and your partner are sure to find a position and technique that works for both of you. In fact, some women experience their first

orgasm while having sex during their pregnancy. This can be attributed to engorgement of the genitals with more sensitive nerve endings and oxytocin, the hormone that maintains your pregnancy, which is known to spark the libido. premature DeliVerY

Orgasms are another concern, as the myth says that they cause contractions that may cause premature delivery. Dr. Salita debunks this myth again, “Although orgasms produce contractions, they are not strong enough to induce labor.” There is no medical evidence that the act of having sex causes labor. However, stimulating your breasts can speed up the production of oxytocin which can cause contractions when you are near your due date. In general, orgasms are very good for you and your baby! When you have an orgasm, the baby is unaware of what you are doing, but does experience a similar euphoric hormone rush that you will experience. As your pregnancy progresses, you will discover that you will have all sorts of contractions without going into labor. Don’t get me started on Braxton-Hick’s! miScarriage

Many couples worry that sex during pregnancy will cause a miscarriage, especially in the first trimester. Early miscarriages are usually related to chromosomal abnormalities or other problems in the developing baby—not to anything you do, or don’t do. “Having sex while pregnant will not cause a miscarriage,” Dr. Salita stresses. bc bc-mag.com { ANNIVERSARY 2011 } b c

Last June 25th, Lacoste and the EMM Group hosted a beautiful backyard barbecue at the Hamptons, previewing select dishes from the highly anticipated new restaurants, Lexington Brass and CATCH (set to debut this fall). Gossip Girl star and previous BC Magazine cover mom, Kelly Rutherford, stopped by with her lovely daughter, Helena, to try culinary masterpieces from Top Chef season 3 winner, Hung Huynh and Abe & Arthur’s and Lexington Brass Executive Chef, Franklin Becker. Also present at The Estate in Sag Harbor was EMM Group owner Eugene Remm; President and CEO of Lacoste Steve Birkhold, and his wife Nicole; and Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actress Kirstie Alley (looking all svelte and chic) and her daughter Lillie Price. All enjoyed the celebration’s other activities, including croquet, badminton, corn hole, and swimming.

Breaking Grounds With the new Fatherhood initiative The Baby Buggy Bedtime Bash held in June was a massive success, with the non-profit organization raising over $385,000. The event also marked the launch of the oneof-a-kind Fatherhood Initiative, a program which aims to help fathers of at-risk children. Guests and supporters include journalist Erica Hill, designer Cynthia Rowley, actress Ali Wentworth and their children.

Founder and President of the Board, Jessica Seinfeld (wife to comedian Jerry Seinfeld) explained, “Every study shows that a child with a father present is more likely to succeed in every aspect of his or her life, and yet many dads who want to play a more supportive role in the lives of their kids for a variety of reasons cannot. With the support of our sponsors and generous Baby Buggy dads, we are committed to helping community-based programs that overcome the obstacles to fathers who can, should, and want to be there for their kids.” Such community-based programs are geared towards providing fathers with financial literacy workshops and classes that tackle strategies for budgeting, debt reduction, and saving. e childproof our homes to avoid all sorts of accidents that could happen as our kids grow up and become more active. Not surprisingly, we learn early on to take the same amount of care when leaving the house and traveling with our children. Just as we adults should have been practicing buckling up whenever we hit the road, there are equally vital procedures for

ensuring our kids’ safety when we bring them along. Keeping our child secure on the road goes beyond purchasing a car seat or other paraphernalia, and placing him in one. Very specific guidelines must be followed, depending on the child’s age. There are four general age brackets that determine the kind of safety harness we should use: infants (0-12 months), toddlers and preschoolers (1-4 years), schoolaged kids (5-9 years), and older children (aged 10-14).

infant-onlY SeatS

As a general rule, we should keep our kids in rear-facing safety seats as long as possible (or until they reach the maximum height and weight limits recommended by the manufacturer) because they cradle and support our baby’s head, neck, and torso. At the very least, we should keep them rear-facing until they are a year old and have reached 20 pounds. Infantonly seats are best for our newborns and babies up to 22 lbs. conVertiBle anD forWarDfacing SeatS

As the name implies, convertible seats offer versatility in terms of positioning within our vehicles, and are designed to protect our kids until they are at least 40 pounds. They can be

42

used (although hardly) rear-facing until baby is anywhere between 20-35 pounds, then be turned to face forward beyond that. Once our child has outgrown his convertible seat in the rear-facing position, we can switch to forward-facing seats equipped with a full harness, which are designed to protect children between 20-40 pounds, or more. Forwardfacing seats with full harness are recommended for children up to four years of age, weighing 40-80 pounds. BooSter SeatS

For children who are too small to be properly secured with seatbelts, and have outgrown their forward-facing seats, booster seats are recommended. Kids should use these until they are at least 8 years of age, or have grown to around 4 feet and 9 inches tall, the height which normally allows regular automobile seat belts to be fastened snugly enough to restrain a person, and therefore provide adequate protection in the event of an accident.

“children up to 12 yeArs of Age should AlwAys ride in the bAck seAt...to prevent injuries thAt cAn be cAused by the deployment of front AirbAgs.”

A

very important reminder: whether your little one is still using one form of vehicle safety seat or another, or is mature enough to be secured with only the seat belts, all children up to 12 years of age should always ride in the back seat. A major reason for this is to prevent injuries that can be caused by the deployment of front airbags, another vital safety device in vehicles, particularly when used together with seat belts. However, air bags are designed primarily to protect teenagers and adults from slamming face first onto the dashboard or windshield, or even being ejected through the latter in extreme cases. For children however, the velocity with which front airbags may deploy poses a real threat. For this reason, you should never place a child below the age of 13 in the front seat. Side airbags are more child-friendly, and help keep them from going through side windows or being covered by broken glass during mishaps. In recent years, however, the technology of front airbags have evolved to make them safer for the little ones. Beginning in 2006, many passenger cars have come equipped with special sensors to detect when children or very small adults are in the front seat, and subsequently deploy airbags with minimal or no force at all. Aside from airbags, child locks are also essential to safe car travel. When activated, child locks can ensure that our little passengers don’t manage to unlock their doors and inadvertently open them while the car is in motion. When heading out on the road with your little ones, always keep in mind that ensuring their safety goes beyond providing them with various safety paraphernalia, to include the safety of the vehicle you transport them in. According to Tesco Insurance’s guide to buying a family car, most things to consider can be classified into two main categories—safety and practicality. While seat belts, airbags, and child locks have been safety staples for cars over the years, Tesco’s article also mentions that statistically speaking, larger and heavier vehicles have been found to be safer than smaller and lighter ones. Practicality-wise, more sizeable cars also hold the advantage because the most important thing to take into account is space.

SAfety tIp! Seat BeltS

Tesco’s guide advocates that a practical family car should have at least four seats, enough room to house various child gear, and adequate storage containers for toys, supplies, food, and other necessities. The more kids you have or are planning to have, the bigger your choice of vehicle should be. If you have one or two children, you can probably get by with a four-door sedan or a sporty wagon. If you have more than two kids and lead an active lifestyle that includes long trips and activities that require a lot of equipment, then you might do well to invest in bigger models such as SUVs and minivans, which can accommodate seven to eight passengers. David Champion, director of Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Facility in East Haddam, Connecticut assures that, “Finding the right family vehicle doesn’t have to be a difficult, or long, process—if you invest some time to research your options before you go out shopping, so that you know what to look for. Parents need to think about how they’ll be using the vehicle, what type of cargo they intend to carry, and how their needs may change during the years they own the vehicle.” He also stresses the importance of choosing a car with windows easy for the little ones to look out of. “If they can see what’s going on, kids are much happier,” Champion says. “If the back seat is low, they can’t look out the window. And that can trigger boredom and bickering among siblings.” Kristin Varela, “chief mother” at MotherProof. com, which reviews new vehicles specifically for the benefit of moms, offers a similar opinion. “Many auto manufacturers are beginning to know that happy kids in the car equal happy parents or drivers, and also safer drivers,” Varela says. “Storage compartments are frequently built so kids can use them and have access to snacks, games, and other diversions in the car. Entertainment systems are also quite common, again keeping back-seat passengers occupied to contribute to distractionfree driving.” When choosing which car to buy for your family, just keep in mind the fundamental safety, comfort, and practical features that would provide you and your children a fun, safe, worry-free, and truly enjoyable road experience. bc

To find out if your child is ready to ride a vehicle without a booster seat, you can use the Safety Belt Fit Test from SafeKids.org:

When seated with his back against the car’s backseat, do his legs bend at the knees at the edge of the seat? When you fasten the lap belt, does it stay low on the hips and high on the thighs? When you secure the shoulder belt, does it lie on the collarbone and shoulder? Can your child remain seated with his back flat against the backrest of the rear seat, without sliding down or slouching; with the lap belt low on the hips, high on the thighs and never on the stomach; and with the shoulder belts across the chest and shoulders and never on the face and neck? If the answer is “yes” to each of the four questions, then your child has passed the Safety Belt Fit Test, and can now ride without a booster seat, secured only using your automobile seat belts.

It didn’t matter that I had the most terrible morning sickness that lasted all day long—there was no stopping me from tasting and eating all day. After all, wasn’t it my job to grow a healthy baby? Just before I got pregnant for the second time, I had an executive check-up, and my doctor couldn’t believe that I was 38. My cholesterol levels were healthy, and my blood pressure levels were low. Admittedly, I’m not exactly as TV daily appearance thin when I worked in the news, but by no means am I overweight. Besides, I come from particularly good stock. On both sides, my grandparents had lived well into their hundreds. While we did have our share of minor health problems, diabetes was not one of them. About two to seven out of 100 pregnAnt women develop gestAtionAl diAbetes. a candidate for GD. Diabetes is a condition in which your blood sugar or glucose level is high because there isn’t enough insulin in your blood, or your body isn’t responding to insulin properly. About two to seven out of 100 pregnant women develop gestational diabetes, and I, unfortunately, despite not having a family history of diabetes nor being overweight, still ‘won’ the lottery. Fortunately my GD was a borderline case, which I was able to manage mostly with a strict diet. However, because of the possible dangers my condition can pose on the baby, I had to go to the hospital for fetal non-stress tests twice a week, that involved me being hooked up to a machine to monitor the baby’s heartbeat, and any contractions I might have. When a mother has diabetes and her blood sugars are too high, the excess amounts of sugar crosses the placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels. Since the baby does not have diabetes, the baby’s pancreas has to make extra insulin to get rid of the blood glucose. At the same time, the baby gets more energy than needed to grow and develop, so the extra energy is stored as fat, creating the danger of babies that are too big. Given my history, my doctor felt this was the worst-case scenario for my baby. But there were many other complications that could arise, one of them even being stillbirth. So I took my GD seriously, despite my initial denial. Four times a day, I had to test my blood glucose levels: first thing in the morning after fasting, and an hour after each meal. Slowly, I learned what foods and what quantities would keep my blood glucose levels in line. I was put on a diet of six small meals each day—making sure that I never fasted for too long. I kept detailed records of everything I put in my mouth. It was both tedious and sometimes frustrating, but for the health of my unborn child, I knew I had to do it. My doctor had warned me that as my pregnancy progressed, there was a very good chance that my diabetes would get worse—no matter how much dieting and exercise I did. Fortunately, I was one of the lucky ones who survived on minimal medication and did not require insulin shots. With my strict diet, I hardly gained any more weight until the very end of my third trimester. In fact, in the first month that I had discovered I had GD, I even lost some weight. I was very concerned at first, but my doctors reassured me that this was normal. If I were to gain weight suddenly, that would mean that I wasn’t following my diet. In the end, it all paid off. I gained only

27 lbs throughout my entire pregnancy. With my first child, I gained 47 lbs—and that took me a whole year to lose. As an offshoot of my GD, I had several scares throughout my last few months of pregnancy. My blood pressure was constantly being monitored, my blood was being tested for protein as well as the blood glucose levels, and regular ultrasounds were added to make sure that the baby was developing normally. My physician had discussed the pros and cons of my condition, and we agreed that it would be best to deliver this baby via Cesarean section in anticipation that this baby would most likely be larger than my first because of the diabetes. My due date was Christmas day, but we had picked an earlier date for the C-section, so we could be home in time for the holidays. But my baby had other ideas. Before dawn on December 22, I went into labor in the middle of a strong storm that had brought floods to Orange County. I had trouble getting a babysitter to come watch my older son so early in the morning on a terribly rainy day. By the time we made it to the hospital, I had already dilated to 7 cm. I still insisted on a C-section, in anticipation of a possibly large baby. Lucas Sky was born 7 lbs, 2 oz at 10:30 AM, four hours earlier than we had originally scheduled. He had a head full of thick hair, long slender fingers, and rather large feet. My husband and I had chosen not to know the baby’s gender until we first laid eyes on him—and what a wonderful surprise it was to be blessed with another beautiful baby boy. My GD disappeared with childbirth. Two weeks after Lucas was born, I was also only fifteen pounds away from my pre-pregnancy weight. But after all is said and done, a sugar-free and low carb diet really wasn’t that bad. My husband and I actually still plan on sticking loosely to it since we both felt (and looked) great on it. If your doctor suspects you have gestational diabetes as well, you need to know there is no need to panic. Your doctors will tell you what your worst-case scenario could be. However, with proper diet, possible medication and exercise, as well as proper blood sugar monitoring, you and your baby should be just fine. Plus, you’ll shed those preggy pounds even before you have adjusted to having a newborn in your home—and once you are ready to face the rest of the world, you’ll look and feel like a great new mom. bc

gestational Diabetes Diet According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), women with GD should limit fat intake to 30% or less of daily calories. A good way to keep your blood sugar levels under control is to follow a specific meal plan, and it’s best to consult with a dietician to create a diet that will suit you. Some of the general guidelines to remember are: 1. It is important to distribute your calorie and carbohydrate intake evenly by eating a wide variety of foods all throughout the day. An ideal meal plan recommended by the ADA includes three small to moderate sized meals along with two to four snacks. 2. Don’t skip meals. Make sure to eat a good breakfast, as your blood glucose levels are most likely unstable in the morning. 3. Feast on high-fiber foods such as vegetables and fresh fruits, cereals and whole grain breads, beans, dried peas, and other legumes. 4. Limit or avoid foods and drinks that contain simple sugars (these are carbohydrates that the body absorbs quickly, which produces a rapid increase in our blood sugar levels). Processed food and drinks such as candies, cakes, sodas, and fruit juices often contain these. you should also limit the amount of milk you drink, as it high in lactose, which is a simple sugar. 5. Increase your activity level moderately to also help keep your blood glucose levels normal.

getting your child ready to go off to preschool worDs by Minnie Francisco-Francia g r A P h I C s b y M a r K F r a n c i s c a r a n da n G

y daughter Ella, now 8, officially went to school at a bit over 2 years old. I say officially because before that, we’ve been to various other classes including several semesters at The Little Gym. The difference, of course, is that I wouldn’t be in the classroom with her anymore, so I was a bit apprehensive. I have already brought her to the school before classes started and she has met her new teachers, so at least the environment was already familiar to her. I remember that she was a bit shy and hesitant to go in alone, but the teachers were really nice and made her feel at ease, so her first day was more of a big deal for me than for her. I’ve been through the same drill more recently with my son Benjamin, now 4. He started school even younger—a toddlers’ class when he was just a year and half. Having a more sociable and outgoing personality made it easier for my son to adjust to the new setting, and each year, his first days in school were really just a goodbye kiss from me, and he’s off to his classroom. But there were also days, especially when he was younger, when he would be clingy and it would take some time before he settles down with his teachers. Some parents make a big deal of their kid’s first day—taking pictures, hovering, and generally making a fuss. Personally, I think it’s a big milestone, but I try not to put much pressure on my kids before

46

the big day comes. Every year, my kids and I still go through some anxiety at the start of school, but it gets easier as they grow up. Let me share with you some things I’ve learned about easing your little one into preschool: IS hE rEADy?

Age 3 is a good time for a child to start school. They would be more emotionally ready and would most likely be able to handle physical tasks, like following directions or carrying a lunch box. Most preschool programs also start admitting children at this age. If you want to enroll your toddler at an earlier age, you will have to look for one with a toddlers’ class. I think that parents would be the best judge of your toddler’s school readiness, but if you have any concerns, you can discuss this with your pediatrician and the preschool director. Your doctor should be able to give you a green light in terms of his physical readiness, as well as update your child’s vaccination records. Most preschools also assess each student before enrollment, so you can use this opportunity to meet and discuss your concerns with his future teachers and administrator. Being toilet-trained is generally not a requirement for a child to start school. Simply tell the teachers your child’s potty-training progress,

Teacher Giselle lists down some things parents can do to ease the anxiety your child may have in the beginning:

1. Give your child a positive picture of school. Project a fun, loving and secure image of the school and its teachers. 2. On the first day of classes, you may bring your

child inside the classroom to show him his cubby hole for his bag. Once you’ve done that, kindly say your proper goodbyes and leave the room. 3. On the succeeding days, please do your goodbyes just before your child enters his room. Never sneak out of the room.

4. Assure him that a significant other will be there to pick him up everyday. 5. At home, talk to him about his feelings and assure him of your love and support. 6. Trust that the teachers are there to help your child overcome his separation anxiety. 7. Remember that this is just a phase. Things will definitely get better!

And, I assure you, it does get better. you’ll be surprised that in a few days, your child will already be adjusted to the routine of going to school. BACKPACK BASICS

so they will know how to help with his bathroom routine. My daughter wasn’t toilet-trained when she started preschool, but her teachers patiently encouraged her to start removing her pull-up diapers in class. In just a few months, she was able to stay in school without her nappies. firSt-DaY JitterS

Whether it’s his very first time to start school or not, the beginning of the academic year is always an important and critical moment for your little one. In a letter that she gives out before every academic year starts, Teacher Giselle Elgincolin, Director of the Creative Explorers School for Children, encourages parents to realize that this time is an imposed separation for their offspring. It is a time for a kid to say goodbye to his familiar world and venture into a new environment. “Some children may bravely welcome this and head for their classrooms with no fuss. Most kids though cling to their parents or their caregivers as they are anxious of being left alone with strangers,” she explains. What I think helped my kids was talking to them about what to expect on the big day. We have books like “Little Hippo’s New School” and “Off to School with Periwinkle and Blue” that walks kids

through a typical day in school. We read the stories and we discussed things like having a special cubby for their things in school, and what the names of their new teachers will be. On the day itself, I also tried to build their confidence and excitement by letting them decide what to wear and what food they want inside their lunchbox. What’s important is to help them feel good about themselves on their special day. getting into the routine

Starting school does not only affect your little one but involves your whole household routine as well. Who will be taking your kid to and from school? Will you or your husband be available? Is there a bus service or carpool that you can arrange for your child and nanny to take? Before you enroll your child in a class, take time to see if the schedule is convenient for everybody. Is he a morning person who is most active during the hours before lunch? Can you adjust his bedtime so that he will be able to wake up earlier for school? These are all the things you should be considering as you realize that your household’s schedule may revolve around his school routine. School Bag

Another thing to prepare for is your child’s school bag. Will his schedule

require him to eat lunch there? If so, then you will have to prepare a nutritious meal for his lunchbox. Whether it’s a full meal or simple snacks, you can train your nanny to do this if she’s capable. You can discuss the menu for the week with your kids or nanny, and then check the day before if your kitchen is stocked with necessary ingredients. Another tip: if your child will be eating items like fried chicken or spaghetti, be sure to slice these into bite-size bits. This makes it easier for him to spoon out his food and saves time for his teachers. Aside from his food, other items that you should have in your child’s bag are: his water bottle, an extra set of clothes (including underwear), and a small towel. I also put in packs of tissue and wipes in his bag because my son tends to be a little obsessive about his cleanliness. Toys from home are a no-no because it disrupts your child’s and other kids’ attention in class. My son has to have his toy cars with him when going to school, but I’ve taught him to leave it in the car or in his nanny’s bag before he goes inside the classroom. Separation anXietY

All set to take your kid to school? One last tip: don’t get too stressed if your toddler cries or throws a fit at the classroom door. Don’t get angry at him and scold him for acting like a baby. Don’t blame yourself nor your parenting style either. It’s normal—and scenes like these play out in schools every start of the year. You may also feel a little sad because your little one is taking a step into the bigger world. Take heart though, and put on a cheery, confident attitude for your precious one on his big day. Teacher Giselle puts it nicely: “Separation anxiety is a normal behavior and is to be expected at the start of school. Most kids need to go through that stage in order for them to move forward as independent learners. The school opening is an opportunity for growth for both the parents and the child.” bc bc-mag.com { ANNIVERSARY 2011 } b c

Dolphin Tale An inspiring tale based on a true story, the movie follows Sawyer, a young boy who befriends an injured bottlenose dolphin called Winter, who lost her tail in a crab trap. Without her tail, Winter’s future is dire. Sawyer’s unwavering devotion motivates the people around him to band together and help save Winter, in this remarkable story of perseverance and rehabilitation. The film stars Nathan Gamble as Sawyer, Ashley Judd as his mother, Harry Connick Jr. as the vet who rescues the dolphin, and Morgan Freeman as the doctor who makes a prosthetic limb for their undersea friend.

Moneyball This upcoming true-story and dramedy is based on Michael M. Lewis’ book of the same name. Brad Pitt plays the lead as Billy Beane, general manager of Oakland Athletics. Following Beane’s arrival, he then attempts a new, non-traditional approach to scouting players, in order to prove that baseball’s conventional wisdom is wrong. Despite Oakland’s unfavorable financial situation, Beane teams up with Ivy League grad, Peter Brand ( Jonah Hill) and both embark on a baseball revolution to create a more competitive team.

My Afternoons with Marguerite A charming and sentimental movie about friendship and life’s encounters, the story is set in a small French town and follows Germain (Gérard Depardieu), a man in his ‘50s who is considered the village fool. He becomes acquainted with 95-year old Margueritte (real life nonagenarian Gisèle Casadesus) while walking in the park. There are years and worlds of difference between them—with Germain’s low self-esteem and illiteracy and Margueritte’s intelligence and passion for literature—yet in this unlikely friendship that centers on books and words, both their lives are transformed.

I’M DEFINITELY THE SOFTER, GENTLER ONE. I STILL WANT TO PLAY AND GET THE LAUGHTER OUT OF HER, BUT DADDY GETS THE BIGGEST LAUGHS. HE’S THE MOST FUN, HE CAN THROW HER THE HIGHEST, AND TICKLE HER THE MOST. Neil: This is very fun. Here we go. You’ve done a number of fitness and fashion modeling, and you’ve had your second child. How long does it take for you to get back to that kind of shape after you’ve had a child? Samantha: Well, I had no idea after my first pregnancy how long

that would take, and thankfully it came together pretty quickly. Within three months, I was back down to my fighting weight, and I would say it took another couple of months to firm and tone to get to the place that I had hoped to be. I remember shooting the cover of Muscle Fitness Hers Magazine, which was my first time post-baby but my fourth cover for them, so the pressure was on because they knew how I looked before.

N: Did you change your workout routine because of that? Or did you dive back into your regular routine? S: I think the biggest thing was that I

felt like I was in shape prior to getting pregnant, and I maintained my workout regimen at a reduced intensity with doctor’s supervision and the use of a heart rate monitor. I continued that same course of action to keep active throughout the pregnancy until 35 weeks in.

N: [Hears a familiar sound] I thought it was coming from over there and I was terrified. I thought the ice cream man drove in here. S: And I would like the ice cream man

to drive into my house, it’s a hot day in LA.

month of my pregnancy. I mean, you literally either have to sit on me or have a doctor say, “If you move around too much, that baby’s gonna come too early.” That made me sit down pretty darn fast. N: Totally. Does your older daughter, Josselyn, already know what mommy does for a living? Does she ever see you on television, and is that second nature? S: I think she doesn’t know what it means to not have a show—

whether it’s a stage show or mommy being on the TV screen. We don’t sit at home and watch my shows, she’s never done that. But when I hosted Dancing with the Stars, she was on the set while we were shooting or during rehearsals, and that’s every little girls’ dream to watch all those costumes and dancers. She comes to Entertainment Tonight with me, she sits in the voiceover booth with me. She puts the headphones on and does her own voiceovers after I’m done with mine, because she wants to take her turn. So I think it’s all very second nature to her. She’s not even 4-years old, so she doesn’t quite grasp the concept of what “being on television” means. She could definitely watch television on her own anyway, beyond the occasional Dora or Kai-Lan. I love Kai-lan. I think it’s a brilliant show in terms of that it’s actually given us a basis for a platform to have conversations about emotions—caring, and responsibility.

bc-mag.com

N: (Laughs) Sorry, going back to your fitness routine... S: To be honest—second pregnancy, a lot more pressure—because

I knew I could bounce back with the first pregnancy. The second time around, the body vaguely has muscle memory but the elasticity memory, so things get stretched out in directions a lot quicker than you want them to. Are they gonna snap back as fast? Definitely not. I’m older, but I feel like, thankfully, having continued to work out helped a lot. I was on bed rest for the last

N: What other kind of children’s entertainment is she watching?

S: I love the Disney movies and she is a huge fan of every Disney

princess, especially of Ariel. But watching G-Rated films of any kind, through a now almost 4-year old’s eyes, gives me a whole new perspective on what I will allow her to watch, and also on what scares her. To be honest, I feel that practically every movie out there that’s rated G has some very scary parts. N: In what sense? S: We tried as hard as we could to wait as close to her turning 2

before we allowed her to watch videos. Although we did introduce her, at 9 months, to Your Baby Can Read, the video series. The only reason I even allowed that is because I met the doctor who is behind it, Dr. Titzer, and he said he felt the same way. He didn’t wanna let his kids watch TV. But this program works in a certain way to help the semantic of the brain. Now whether it’s all true or a wonderful line of marketing, I don’t know. But I thought that she learned a little bit, and it’s very limited viewing anyhow. We’ve always prescribed to the Association of Pediatrics in terms of viewing limitations. So unless we’re on an airplane, we’ll let her watch a movie because she can’t get up and run around anyhow. Basically, the new Tinkerbell movies are pretty benign. Tinkerbell has her own characters now, and they’re actually quite cute girls. However, even with Winnie the Pooh—which she saw on the airplane the other day—made her burst into tears because the Heffalump was captured. And I felt terrible because usually we always watch with her, but I was at an airplane and I thought, well, I had the baby in my lap, how harmful can Winnie the Pooh be? And there she was, hysterical.

S: I think the biggest role difference is that he’s the rough and tumble, wrestling, more aggressive play one—obviously the baby’s too young for it, but Josselyn definitely needs to be able to get it out of her system. I’m definitely the softer, gentler one. I still want to play and get the laughter out of her, but daddy gets the biggest laughs. He’s the most fun, he can throw her the highest, and tickle her the most.

N: I guess it’s really hard to shield them from everything. With regards to you and Michael, how many years have you been married? S: We’ve been married for seven.

least associate. She does understand the word “matching,” she understood that probably at 2 1/2. My mom—when I was a kid growing up—every night, even through junior high, before school, would lay out my outfit on the ground, in an ensemble order as if it were on a mannequin but flat on the ground with hand in pocket, accessories there. And so I started doing that with Josselyn for fun, and then she wanted to take over and do it herself, which

N: What are some of the responsibilities that you’re finding to be more mommy, or more daddy?

N: Do you still get to pick out what Josselyn wears? S: I used to pick them out on a daily basis, and then she decided

very quickly and early on that she wanted to have a say. So even though I would lay out two options, she would maybe say neither, and then go in her closet. So now I just say, “Go pick out an outfit,” and she usually does. Whether or not they’re as coordinated as I would like them to be, I have sort of taken a breath and allowed myself to let her be creative in her ensemble. N: Is that a more day-to-day creativity, as opposed to a formal event? S: Yes. I do try to suggest matching colors, I try to get her to at

N: Oh that’s the problem. Okay, I understand. In a little while. J: (Music playing in the background)

Mom, is that a giddyup song? Do they have Chicago?

N: Yeah. S: Do they have Chicago on there? I did

the Broadway show, so she...

N: Where did you do Chicago? S: On Broadway. The Ambassador. N: That’s great. S: So I did that, and she was just shy of

turning 2. Between being in LA and New York with me, it was incredible. It was her

bc-mag.com BC_Anniversary2011_Virtual.indd 59

first Broadway show, and she was actually up through the entire thing, only fell asleep the last 20 minutes, and it was so fun. N: I guess it applies more to Josse at this stage. Do you feel like she’s going to go in the path that you’ve gone for your life? Maybe it’s too early to tell. S: It’s hard to tell at this stage, but it’s fun.

Just within the last few months, as she discovers that there are different things that one can do as a “grown-up,” she has told me that she wanted to be everything from a doctor so she can help people, and “dictated” it to Hillary to be an artist. N: Are you and your husband

establishing any family traditions with the girls? S: I think the greatest tradition that we’ve

started is doing bedtime together. My husband and I are both very hands-on, and I think that’s something very special. And I feel very lucky to have a husband who is 100% involved as a husband, father, and partner. Obviously, there are certain nights that I have a shoot late or my husband has meetings late, but most nights of the week we always do bedtime together. We get on the bed and read her books. After we’ve put the baby to bed together, we go into her room for more stories in the dark that we’re just making up and singing lullabies. bc
