This is 2013 New Year’s Resolutions. Why the heck shouldn’t I write one?

I practically have a 3-page list in my head, so I may as well jot down my top of mind and have some catharsis in the process.

First, let me take you on a brief review of my 2012. The highlight would be the birth of my third child and first son, Mathis Samuel, last August 16th. Like myself, he is a “Dragon” baby, which is supposed to be auspicious—as far as Chinese astrology goes. We now have two “dragons” out of 5 humans in our family, so I’m holding my 6th degree Chinese ancestors to having more good luck this coming year. The 2012 lows would be the kids and asthmatic husband getting hospitalized, some business setbacks, our 12-year old beloved Lab getting hit by old age tumors and leptospirosis, getting disappointed by some people and events.

So in order to let the good times roll, I will do my part by…

1. Eating fewer sweets. I swear I feel my knees hurt with every devoured donut. Does this happen to any of you? On the same note, I should go back to exercising because I want to live to see my great-grandchildren—and chances of that happening when you’re overweight get slimmer (what an ironic phrase).

2. Not procrastinating, because it all piles up. You blink, and the molehill of tasks has become Mt. Everest just because you didn’t answer 1 email. One! 3. Spending more time with my dogs. I always think they’d live forever, but their mortality is so depressing. 12 years is hardly enough time to spend with one you’ve raised as a child. 4. Staying away from people I already had the gut feel are up-to-no-good, or will just be using you for their self-gain. 5. Simplifying birthday and holiday gettogethers. That said, learning to say no when I am too tired and overwhelmed. 6. Not adding to my work ‘plate,’ even if it seems like a good idea—because along with that “idea” is the stress that comes with the extra work. 7. Noting down where I store stuff. Sadly, last Christmas I couldn’t find my huge box of cool Christmas décor anywhere in our house or bodega (which oth-

er people had access to. Sigh.). 8. Giving away more stuff I no longer need to people who need and will use it. It will go to someone deserving, and I get to have a cleaner home. Win-win. 9. Living free of regrets, moving forward, and always thinking positive. 10.

Praying more often as a family. Speaking of someone having a lot on their plate, I’m sure the God we pray to is being spoken to by a billion other people with different intentions, so we gotta help him out and thank him for working overtime.

I decided to keep this at 10, because that is already a tall order.

However, what has jumpstarted my 2013 is starting BC’s year with headturner, Una Healy, and her equally gorgeous daughter, Aoife, on our cover. How providential that this comes out when The Saturdays (the pop sensation that Una is 1/5 of) launch their very own show, and on E!, nonetheless. These ladies are moving upward, everyday.

I also had the pleasure of virtually meeting and speaking with reality TV’s first homosexual family, The Guncles, Bill Horn and Scout Masterson, as well as with Celebrity Rehab star, Rachel Uchitel.

Both broods are blessed with daughters that are helping them navigate their lives with a newfound and exciting direction. You can watch the videos of our talks on karizfavis.com.

It is also with extreme gratification that I present our “Year-Round Gift List” story, as well as our fashion pages. It’s not easy picking out presents and clothes nowadays with all the choices made available, but we think we’ve come up with choices that help narrow it down for you.

eally, it jellies and squirms and self-creates in so many different moments and varieties that it defies classification. The best all encompassing definition we found came simply from the admonition in the Survival Guide, “You won’t be the weirdest kid in the class anymore.”

T R AV E L It's the ultimate expression of the kid in every adult. And for that very reason, seeing it through your kid's eyes makes total sense.

Kids see the world much like this –– limitless possibilities, never ending horizons –– all the time. The whole purpose of Burning Man is to get back to this love affair with life.

That said, there’s plenty of Adult endeavors that you won’t be dragging your kids to, from fetish shows to all-night raves. But 3

those go on in their own space and the place is really as big a small city, so you don’t need to go to those neighborhoods. And as long as you’re not so prudish that the occasional naked person, possibly painted silver from head to toe, riding by on their bike doesn’t offend you, you’re in for a fantastic ride.

hristy Turlington-Burns, best known as the face of Calvin Klein for 20 years, puts a spotlight on a cause that matter to her deeply, while collaborating with one of the world’s most recognized brands in baby carriers.

Borne out of a personal desire for mobility and comfort, allowing parents to tackle life while maintaining a close and natural bond with their baby and toddler, ERGObaby carriers and products apply proper ergonomics to keep children close and comforted, while helping parents stay strong, comfortable, and able. Many parents swear by its amazing features, all of which combine to greatly help alleviate back pain—the number 1 complaint when carrying a child for longer periods.

Baby carriers are extremely handy and beneficial when one travels or needs to be mobile without extra help, as it allows the caregiver to be hands-free, therefore able to accomplish more, while keeping the child as safe in your arms as possible.

Last October 9 at Home Studios in New York City, BC was invited to ERGObaby and Christy TurlingtonBurns’ celebration of the launch of the ERGObaby guest designer series, kicking off with the model’s first collection, featuring a partnership with Turlington’s advocacy and mobilization campaign, Every Mother Counts.

Launched in 2010 after Turlington’s first documentary film and directorial debut, “No Woman, No Cry,” she founded Every Mother Counts (EMC), which aims to increase education and support for maternal mortality reduction globally and engage new audiences to better understand the challenges and solutions while encouraging others to take action to improve the lives of girls and women worldwide. The world-renowned supermodel and mother of two explained in a statement, “Hundreds of thousands of women continue to die needlessly each year due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth, but the truth is that we can prevent up to 90% of those deaths.” EMC is

a charity organization which aims to “raise awareness and mobilizing action on maternal health among the American public, while mobilizing financial resources for maternal health and directing 100% of funds raised to effective programs.” They also seek to “encourage policymakers to demonstrate leadership on maternal health care.”

ERGObaby’s Guest Designer Series will facilitate awareness and support of this vital issue through donating a portion of the proceeds of each sale directly benefiting EMC. The launch collection features two carriers, NotJust-a-Diaper Bag, and a “hands-free” Waist Pack in the “Umba” pattern, a batik method that involves a specially carved wood stamp, hot wax, and a white piece of cotton—all created by a small business woman in Togo, Africa. ERGObaby worked with The Collaborative Group, an organization that brings sustainable employment to women globally, to source design from the very regions served by the Every Mother Counts partnership. bc

t’s not easy being the purported paramour of a married man—especially one who is a huge celebrity like Tiger Woods—and whether or not that was true is certainly water under the bridge for new (and hot) momma, Rachel Uchitel. Rachel is crazy about her 8-month old daughter, Wyatt, and is enjoying the quiet bliss of marital life opposite husband, Matt Hahn.

In this rare Q&A about her family, the tight-abbed, momof-one known for her enivable coif can talk all day about her wide-eyed darling that has turned her into mush, her party days into baby swim classes, and why she’ll always choose the salon over being a DIY blonde.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Rachel Uchitel’s parents started cable television in the state after moving there from New York City. Rachel thinks back and starts our telephone dialogue with a New York accent I never did catch even after a few years of working in the area. “I have really fond memories of my dad—going to work with him and sitting in the television studio when I was a kid. I loved that—I was totally like a daddy’s girl. Growing up in Alaska—it’s such a different place— it was very cold, obviously, and it was pretty dark. I remember it very clearly because I moved when I was 4 ½, because my parents got divorced and I moved back to New York City with my mother then. Because there was such a separation between New York and Alaska, it’s easy for me to remember the difference.”

He actually tried to bring the World’s Fair to Alaska and almost got it there, and spent about US$ 4 million of his own money trying to do that. He was really passionate about Anchorage, and a lot of stuff happened where he and my mom got a divorce. He built the only sports arena that they had in Anchorage at the time—it had hockey, boxing, basketball. He started to promote boxing and I think he was really devastated after he got turned down for the World’s Fair. He got involved with some bad people and started trying some drugs. He was never a drug user and unfortunately, he died of a cocaine overdose when he was 44 years old.”

I ask about the untimely demise of her father to drugs when she was a teenager in relation to her aforementioned memories of him. “When I was 15 years old, my father died. He was a very successful man; he built his company

“How did this affect you?” I blurt out. She must have been asked this a million times, but seems open to the topic. “I was at boarding school at the time, and so my headmaster had to tell me—and that was obviously, absolutely

horrible to hear. That was a pretty horrific experience, and as a parent now, it ’s affected me that I would never want my child to grow up without one parent. Matt and I are not drug users at all. I’m pretty serious about being safe about things because I don’t want anything to happen to myself or Matt, because I think it’s important for our daughter to grow up with two parents, if that’s what destiny is supposed to be.”

I inquired about how they’re building a strong foundation for Wyatt in their home, so she can be protected from incidents such as getting involved in drugs. Rachel sounds pensive. “We’re raising her in a way that we’re very affectionate with her. We’re very handson, and we wanna make sure that she feels like she’s a part of a family, that she doesn’t feel isolated at all, and that she feels loved—I think that’s important.

On the topic of her notorious past involving a rumored involvement with golf star, Tiger Woods, and an alleged affair with actor David Boreanaz (I didn’t name names, just asked her whether she wanted to talk about past controversies) that turned many eyes in her direction, I ask if she still wanted to talk about it. “All I’ll say is, every single experience I’ve gone through in my life is a learning experience that I can use to teach my child.” Well said, so we move on. Or rather, further back.

Rachel is also famous for being part of the show, “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” [Pinsky]. She relates what she learned from it all. “That was a great experience for me. I was there for a prescription pill and love addiction, and to this day, I haven’t done any prescription pills. That was a huge eye opener for me on how bad it is to selfmedicate. I have tons of friends that have prescriptions for Xanax, Valium, and Vicodin, you know, the standards that everyone has in their closets. I’m a huge proponent of never self-medicating nor taking those drugs unless there was a real necessity to, because mixing it with the wrong thing can lead to a major accident, if not death. In terms of the love addiction, [the show] really changed my pattern of how I have relationships with a man. After the show was when I met Matt, my husband, and because of the lessons I learned and the way I changed my patterns of behavior in relationships, I was able to have a normal, healthy relationship with him that led us to finally get married and have a child. So, I attribute being on Celebrity Rehab with a lot of good things in my life.”

Speaking of ‘good things,’ I ask about her first marriage. She thinks back and explains, “That was 7 years ago—I was married for a year-and-a-half. I was more of friends with my former husband—we were best friends. I was still suffering from post-partum depression from 9/11 when I lost my fiancé. I think that I chose to get married at that point, to a long-time friend—he was a childhood friend of mine—because I wanted to be in a marriage. I have read in magazines that people say I was married for only four months and that I bounced around—that’s just not true. No one’s actually ever asked me about that. I don’t know where they get that information. I was married to somebody that I cared about deeply as a friend, and we just weren’t in love and we both decided the best thing would be to get a divorce because we both wanted a love story, and there was nothing scandalous about that at all.

It was very amicable. We decided we would rather be in love with somebody and have that passion that we were missing. We wanted to try over because we both wanted to have a love story.

Being a once prominent figure in the entertainment and nightlife industry, is that something she’s still considering as a career while raising Wyatt? “I’m completely out of that. It’s a hard lifestyle.

You’re out all night long and you’re surrounded by alcohol and temptation.

It’s a really fun business to be in, but it’s not conducive to being married with a child.”

On the topic of lifestyles, we proceed to talk about hers together with her husband, Matt Hahn—from how they met to how they are raising their daughter together. “We actually met on Facebook. He wrote me a note because he had seen an episode of Celebrity Rehab, oddly enough, and we started talking. We had a mutual friend there.

He’s a very patient, loving guy. He was brought up by a really religious family, and has very good morals and values.

He’s a really great dad and he loves Wyatt. He’s a very simple guy. He loves to go to work and work hard so that he can come home and take care of his family. He’s at work all day and comes home at 4:30, and he’s with me, Wyatt, and the dog for the rest of the evening.

We do family stuff together. He’s not a guy that’s out gallivanting a lot. He’s a real family man, and that’s pretty amazing.”

I think it’s important to show her what she has so she can be appreciative, and so that she can give back to people that don’t have as much as her. I think you learn that lesson by traveling to other countries.

How has giving birth to Wyatt changed her outlook in life? “For the first time in your life, when you have a child, you realize what unconditional love is.

It’s easy to talk about wanting unconditional love with your significant other or whatever, but it’s the first time you actually really experience that. I will always put her first. The things that were important to me before now come second. I’m always very protective of her and am making sure that she has the best of everything, that she’s well grounded and well taken care of, and that she’s safe. I’m planning my schedule around taking her to the park, and the hour I want her to sit in front of Baby Einstein on the TV, and when she does her swim class—like those things come first before me planning my hour to go to the gym. Whatever the situation is, I put her schedule before mine, and I’ve never done that before for anyone. It totally comes naturally to me as it totally comes naturally to any parent.”

Speaking of second nature, Rachel falls into the bragging-about-your-babyevery-chance-you-get category as well.

“You know how parents talk about their kids’ activities and brag about them?

When it’s not your kid, you don’t care.

But now I get it. Now, I understand!

I’m so proud of her, and I wanna talk about her all day long.”

She also passes two ultimate assessments of domesticity: the test for diaper bag completeness, and fixation with baby clothes. “I have my diaper bag right next to me. I have four diapers, wet wipes, an extra outfit, pacifier, bib, blanket. For me, Neutrogena shimmer, clear lipgloss, and wait a minute, I have Mustela lotion which smells so good… like the best, like a baby. Oh, and I have a hat for her in here.”

As far as her favorite clothing brands, she is excited about, “Janie and Jack.

I also like babyGap, to be honest with you, they have really cute stuff. And oddly enough, Target has the best selection of baby clothes. Forget all those really expensive baby clothes because first of all, they spit up or drool on them. You know you have to change their clothes for, like, four times.” The Hahns reside in San Francisco, but Target is few and far between. “We don’t have a Target around me but I’ve been to Target before and I’m obsessed with their baby clothes. They have a million things and they’re like $12. If I had a Target around me, I’d get her

clothes there all the time.”

Naturally, this wouldn’t be a complete parenting story if we didn’t delve into the embarrassing or crazy parts of the day-to-day. “There’s millions of funny things but what stands out is the first time I ventured out of the house by myself. I was just meeting a friend of mine for lunch, like a 20-minute drive away, and it literally took me 2 hours to get my act together to go there. I couldn’t figure out the stroller. I couldn’t figure out the car seat.

She pooped in her pants the second I finally figured out how to put her in the car seat. And I couldn’t figure out how to unlatch her, so she was stuck in the car seat in her poopy diaper— and I was sobbing. I was like, “Oh my God, what do I do?” You know? And the funny part of that actually was that it was 3 weeks after I had given birth, so I hadn’t ventured out to the hair salon or anything. For the first time in my life, I got my hair color in a box from Walgreens or wherever. I was like, “Oh my God, I really wanna color my hair,” but I don’t have time to go to the hair salon because I had Wyatt, and you don’t have 4 hours to visit the hair salon anymore at that moment, especially. So I colored my

For the first time in your life, when you have a child, you realize what unconditional love is. It’s easy to talk about wanting unconditional love with your significant other or whatever, but it’s the first time you actually really experience that.

hair from this box, and you know, I’ve kinda been known for my hair—like a lot of people talk about how I have this long, great hair. My hair just comes out looking nothing like it does on the box. It looks like chocolate, beautiful brown on the box, and my hair comes out and it’s black. Like, what the hell is going on? Anyway, I didn’t wanna think about it because I didn’t have enough time because Wyatt’s awake and I had to clothe her. Long story short, after telling you about how she pooped in her diaper and whatever, I finally get to this lunch with my friend. The first thing she says to me is, “Oh my God, I’m so glad you made it,” and she looks to me and says, “Why is your hair blue?” You know how an old person makes their hair so black that it’s like a blue? My hair looked like a marsh kind of, and I was like, “Oh my God, I dyed it from a box,” and I started sobbing to my friend who happened to be my hairstylist from Vegas, but she lives in San Francisco now. We went back to her house and she dyed my hair a normal color. She has a 1 ½ - year old so she’s like a professional parent and she was helping me with Wyatt. It was such a crazy day, but after that day, I knew how to use the car seat, the stroller, I

knew how to change a dirty diaper on the side of the freeway, I knew how to do everything. And I learned my lesson, never to use hair color out of a box. So that was my one crazy day of just having a complete meltdown.”

Apart from maintaining her ‘do, Rachel has kept her toned body—well—toned, despite the rigors of parenting. “I used to go the gym everyday for an hourand-a-half. Now, I go when I can go, when Matt’s home and we can switch.

I try and eat somewhat well, but I don’t deprive myself at all. I still have a list of things that I love, and I still eat them. I try and walk everywhere, and it’s easy because of the stroller. I still have about ten pounds to lose from my baby weight, but the difference now versus before I had a baby is that if I was 10 lbs overweight before I had a baby, I would be obsessed with it in my head, constantly thinking of what I had to eat, or not eat, or how much I had to work out to lose that weight.

Now, I’m clearly aware that I still have ten pounds to lose, but I’m really not concerned about it and I’m not killing myself to lose it. And quite frankly, I still fit into my size 25 jeans that I fit into before I was pregnant, and if I

don’t look the same in them, I’m not concerned anymore as much as I was before I had a baby. Do you know what I mean? Again, my priorities are totally different.”

Even her travel habits have changed to incorporate her beautiful brood.

“Every year, I try and go somewhere great. My favorite place in the world to travel to is Northern Thailand, to Chiang Mai, and I’d love to bring her to Thailand one day. The next place that I actually wanna go to is to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and do a Viking excursion for that. Once a year for about 10 years now, I’ve done a Viking excursion to a different country. Usually I find myself with a group that I don’t know. I’ve gone to Turkey, Morocco, Prague. I’ve done that in Brazil. When she gets older, I’d love to do that with her one day.

I think it’s important to travel and teach her about different cultures and how not everyone has it as easy as us Americans do. I think it’s important to show her what she has so she can be appreciative, and so that she can give back to people that don’t have as much as her. I think you learn that lesson by traveling to other countries.” bc

The latter is already

Bill and Scout are not only juggling the reality show and their public relations firm (Marque Communications) while bringing up their child, the duo are also founders of “Hold My Hand,” an instrumental mentoring service for couples

who want to adopt, or are already going through the process.

Our favorite “Guncles” tell us about coming out to their families, the “gayest story ever told,” starting their adoption work from scratch for baby number 2, and a heartwarming “chicken nugget story” that is etched in the mind of a little girl whose life is forever changed because of these two lovable men.

We work with a lot of charities, and we try to do as many things to give back as we can, and kind of be a part of that. To show people that our family is just like theirs, so if there’s like a walk for breast cancer or whatever, we try to do as many of those things as we can. To just be a part of everyone’s community. ––Scout Masterson Kariz: How did you meet Tori Spelling and her family, and how long have you known them?

Bill: I actually worked in a PR firm, and

I went on a trip to Turks and Caicos. I was one of the people on the trip who was actually assigned to make sure that Tori and her brother got to the event, that they were being taken care of, that they were happy, and all that fun stuff. But then we got stuck there for 8 days, because 9/11 happened. You become quick friends with someone when you spend 8 intense days together. And then I met Scout three or four months later.

AfricanAmerican drag queen who was about 6’5”. So we were there, I was with a friend of mine who was a drag queen for fun. So after Grease, they have a carnival that they all go to. They set up a little carnival for the charity part, and my friend was reading palms—that’s where I saw Bill, he was creepily staring at me.

It’s cute because now we see, like, gay pride. We see people make shirts that say, “I Love My Guncle,” and it’s really cute. We’d like to think that it was all because of Tori calling us that.

S:

I guess Tori just started calling us that, and then all of sudden, it just took off. I think she said it once or twice, and then while we were watching the show, they literally started putting on the bottom corner, “The Guncles”.

K: It’s like a household word!

B: She came up with it, and

been really nice.For us, it’s kind of the one thing that’s a little hard is that we share a lot of things online—and I think that it’s important to do that because Simone was born on the show eventually, so we share a lot of our lives and her life online—but there are times when I get concerned about whether somebody will start kind of following her. But there is a separation, and we try to live somewhere that is kind of really “neighborhood” and not too congested—just because I feel like it’s better to try to keep out of the way from everybody. That’s the only thing that I think about a lot—just having to be extra careful. I don’t think people mess with babies as much as they do little kids.

B: And when you said “the entertainment community,” I think of Los Angeles. People seem to like the idea of having a gay couple with a kid. I think people are more excited than it being a negative…We’re not alone—we’re not the only gay coubc-mag.com { SPRING 2013 } b c

that, but we never really had a lot in common. It’s just a very small town and he was a factory worker, he was in an industry where there were no gay people—so I think that relationship was harder because I didn’t really have anything to relate to. My mom was very open and loving, so when I say officially when did I come out? When I told my mom in my 20s. All she said to me was, “I always knew.” If you are to talk to her, she would say, “I can’t believe I’m a grandma, that’s so exciting to me.” So she actually lives right down the street from us now, and she’s Simone’s ‘granny-nanny.’ She’s in our home and in our lives every single day.

K: That works out. That’s wonderful.

B: I came out senior year of college.

K: Is this accurate, that you guys are the first gay family to appear on a reality TV show?

S: Yeah, that’s confirmed by GLAAD. K: Is there any pressure to be examples to those who are still struggling to find acceptance in their own community? You guys are like an icon right now.

S: We do get younger kids who reach

out and say, “You know, I never thought I could look forward to having a family.” We both kind of grew up around the city—he grew up in New Jersey, but I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania—and we didn’t have examples of gay families. Here or there, somebody would say that person was “gay,” but there weren’t any role models like there are now—we weren’t able to just watch a show or go online. We do think about that a lot—we work with a lot of charities,

and we try to do as many things as we can to give back, to show people that our family is just like theirs. If there’s a “walk for breast cancer” or whatever, we try to do as many of those things as we can. To just be a part of everyone’s community.

B: I don’t think that we feel any pressure to be role models, I think we feel pressured to be good parents—and then whatever comes out of that, the good, bad, the ugly—it’s life. It’s what every parent experiences, so that’s how we relate with people, both gay and straight. That’s enough pressure— trying to be a good parent. I’m done.

K: Haha, exactly. I so understand. You mentioned about coming from a small town. Can we go back to how you came out to your families?

S: I come from a split home. My

mom and dad divorced when I was very young, so I grew up mostly with my mom. I would see my dad on a regular basis when I was a kid, it was every other weekend or something like

Just to be safe, I waited until my parents paid the last school tuition in my college. I dyed my hair green at one point when I was younger, and I thought I was cool. I wasn’t. They had threatened to pull my college tuition if I didn’t dye my hair back, so I was like, well, if I did that, then they’ll pull me out of college. I told them in the winter of my senior year. And then my mom’s first reaction was, one of first things she said in the car when she was crying was, “I’m just gonna have to—“ We’re both only children (motions to Scout). So my mom said, “I’m just gonna have to come to grips with the fact that I’ll never be a grandmother.”

K: Well, that changed.

S: Basically, the message

is, our mothers are only thinking of themselves. (rolls eyes and smiles) B: You come out, it’s gonna be all about them and not about us.

K: Haha! They’re thinking like, “My son is so handsome and I can’t have a grandchild.” (Laughs) S: Our ceremony was very much about

them as well.

K: (Laughs) We’ll go back to your ceremony in a bit. Can you tell us more

It’s what every parent experiences, so that’s how we relate with people, both gay and straight.—Bill Horn about your adoption mentoring service, “Hold My Hand?” And what made you decide to do this?

S: Talking about adoption on Tori &

Dean’s show really opened up people to ask us questions on Twitter, on Facebook. Just generally, at that time, a lot of people weren’t familiar with open adoption. Even our family members thought “open adoption” meant that the birth mother or birth family could come back and “take the baby back.” They didn’t realize that open adoption just meant that you knew who the birth parents were, so you had an openness in that regard.

It’s a positive thing. We then realized that we had this platform opportunity that it would be good to talk about adoption as much as we can, because we didn’t really see a lot of positive shows or stories being told out there about adoption. Most people, if they’re on a talk show, they’ll talk about the negative part of adoption or the negative experience. For months, we found ourselves answering questions on Facebook and Twitter, like “How did you get started? I don’t have a lot of money, how can I adopt…” With that, and going through our experience for about 6 to 7 months, we thought, “Well this is silly, let’s call it something so we can help more people.” So last November [2011], we launched “Hold My Hand.” It’s just

us doing it, but we’d like to make it better and have a bigger message. We personally have helped over a hundred people and families with their adoptions within a year. We kind of do that in our spare time, but we help people with everything—from pointing them in the direction of where they can get started, to find out more in their community about adoption to literally, being up in the middle of the night, texting back and forth with someone who’s waiting in the hospital for their baby to be born.

K: Wow. S: So we’ve

had all different kinds of people who are adopting and don’t have any children of their own. They ask us, “What do I need for my nursery? or What did you use?” Luckily for us, we’ve been able to try out pretty much around 90% of the products out there, so we have the ability to share our knowledge about that. With “Hold My Hand,” we don’t charge people money because we feel like it’s something we wanna do to help. We’re not social workers, but we know how expensive adoption is. I mean even for us, at times, it was a struggle to have a lot of the money at once.

K: Do you remember how much it cost?

S: Yeah. We worked with a non-profit

so it was a sliding scale. If we added

up everything with Simone’s adoption, it would be probably just under $40,000—and you need all that in cash. A lot of people don’t have 40 grand lying around. So we tell our “Hold My Hand” clients that there’s all different ways of doing it—there’s foster-to-adopt through state programs.

We didn’t pick surrogacy because it’s $100,000 to $150,000 dollars, and that’s just out of our budget.

B: It wasn’t as important for us, because we couldn’t have a child “naturally,” you know what I mean? We didn’t feel as tied to that process as other people—like a straight couple—might.

S: We wanted to give a child a home that needed one.

K: How long was the process to adopt Simone?

B: About 2 years, from when we started

the process with the agency, it took us about 6 months to get on the books, to get paperwork signed and start officially looking, then after that, it took us a year. We were getting very frustrated.

We were thinking that there would be more ups than downs, and we weren’t getting any phone calls.

K: Simone’s birth mother is part of your extended family, is this correct?

B: Yeah. We text with her, send pictu-

res, exchange Christmas presents.

why we like to share our story is because so many people don’t have a great relationship with the birth mother. We’ve heard all kinds of crazy stories about birth mothers stealing cars, that kind of stuff.

B: We never hear good stories, which is often the case. So it’s nice to share happy stories.

K: Right. How do you plan on telling Simone about her birth mother in the future?

B: No secrets.

S: It’s important for her just to be

a natural conversation in our home, at our dining room table. We have a bunch of pictures, and one of them is of Bill and I with her birth mother and a picture of her as a baby. Bill has taught her a bedtime story that Simone knows now, about adoption.

B: Yeah, we call her our little nugget— “Nuggie”—so it’s all about the daddy wanting a chicken nugget, searching, and then he got a phone call and he got on a plane, and he went across the country, and then we found Simone.

And she now knows it by heart.

K: So cute!

B: Every single

night when I tuck her in, she goes—“Tell me the chicken nugget story!”

S: It’s part of who she is, and it’s part of who we are. We’re not gonna make a big deal out of it. We’re just gonna be part of her story.

K: How old is she now, by the way?

S: Two and a half.

B: Fourteen. She’s 14 years.

K: They’re all going on fourteen. How do you guys split parenting duties?

B: Scout cooks.

We keep it easy, we don’t really have specific chores. We’ve had a lot of couples ask us that, too. A lot of gay families who are adopting say, “How do you split it up?” I think, in the single lifestyle, you kind of let things go, there’s not a structure to the home. We just kind of pick up where the other one leaves off. Growing up, I had friends who, the dad took the garbage out—we just kind of do whatever.

S:

K: To pitch in.

B: I tuck her

in, and Scout enjoyed cooking even before Simone.

K: I enjoy eating, so I would love to go to your house. (Laughs) S: Yes! Hahaha!

B: My mom told me that my dad

never changed my diaper. I think that’s where a lot of people’s mindsets come from, that’s what confuses them about us. “It’s the woman’s job to do this.” and it’s the man’s job to do that.” Well, that isn’t how it works today with our straight friends, and that’s certainly not gonna work with us.

K: Certainly not. Haha!

B: If it’s a poopy diaper,

it’s whoever is

the closest.

K: Haha! So aside from the show and Hold My Hand, what keeps you guys busy?

S: We’ve been developing and kind

of pitching our own show about us, about our adoption story, our Hold My Hand clients. Hopefully, knock on wood, that’ll be coming to light in the coming year. We also have our own boutique PR firm[Marque Communications], and we work with baby and kids’ products, which we found are interesting to us. Bill comes from a long background with PR, and I come from entertainment. I was a casting director for 13 years. We joined forces together to do events, traditional PR, celebrity seeding of products.

We have clients that we keep all year round, like the 4moms Origami and Skip Hop. Bebe Au Lait is also our client. This year we worked on a few events with Britax. We work with Daddy Scrubs.

K: I know you work with Baby Buggy too? We featured Jessica Seinfeld. That’s her organization, right?

S: Yeah. We were able to hook up LA

S: We announced

that we are gonna start for the second baby; we just don’t know how long it will take. The other thing about adoption is that we have to start over, just like we never had adopted a baby. So you have to start from scratch, no shortcuts.

B: Everything expires—our home studies expire. They fingerprint you, so ours expired.

K: That’s amazing. Do you have a favorite daddy duty?

B: I like reading to her at night.

S: My favorite thing is when she was

a baby, I would dream about the time where she could be old enough to lay and watch a movie with me. So now, I enjoy that.

B: Now he gets to watch, “Ni Hao, Kai-Lan.” K: Haha, congratulations!

B: She’s never been to China,

K: Right. It never ends.

S: I can’t imagine, I’ll

give you a lot of credit for having several children.

K: I almost forgot to ask you about your wedding.

S: We had a ceremony that Tori threw

a felony.

for us on the show. It was a lot of fun, just a small group of friends. This was when she was starting out with her wedding planning. Being around her, she encouraged us that birthdays have to be gigantic celebrations. Simone’s two birthdays have been pretty epic.

K: Which you have not, I assume.

S: I thought once you adopted,

K: And you can be denied a child? Is that a possibility, even if you’ve already adopted?

S: Yes. I mean, I think if we commit

LA Family Housing is about people working their way out of poverty, so it’s a live-in facility of people with children of any age, and you either go to school or you work, and they save that money in lieu of you staying there for free, then you use all the donations to live. At the end of 2 years, they help you get an apartment, furniture, and pay for all your utilities with the money you saved. So you work your way out of poverty, and that’s teaching people how to survive in the world.

I think about parenting is I’m always exhausted.

all that stuff was good. That’s not the case— you start from the beginning. We have such a great relationship with our birth mother that I’m honest with the fact that it’s frightening to think about having a whole new birth mother and a whole different personality in our lives. There’s a possibility that the next birth mother will be crazy, or not as nice or as fun.

B: Or she could be an international supermodel.

S and B: You’ll never know.

K: The genetics could be awesome. Best and most challenging part about being a parent?

B: We’re in the “terrible twos” right

now, and we’re potty training—it’s sort of that you’re in between, “When am I being too strict?” We don’t wanna let her get away with things just because she’s 2. We’ve seen parents do that.

S: I don’t wanna be Dina Lohan.

B: She could be our birth mother.

Shhhh…

S: Yeah, I think that’s it. Juggling everything—we like to take Simone to school. She goes to a toddler school.

S: We’re not willing to let go of anything in her life, so just juggling work, the show, Hold My Hand, Simone, and the charity—it’s a lot. So for me, when

and I was looking for shower gel or shampoo for her—and she, you know, they had everything from the bottom to the top shelf, and she had to have strawberry—like everything has to be strawberry—so I’m looking for strawberry shampoo, and I said, ‘I just don’t see any, Simone,’ and I’m looking, and she had seen a bottle at her level with a little strawberry on it, so she screamed to me, she said, ‘Bend over.’ and I said, ‘Why?’ ‘I said bend over.’ And everybody in Target was there looking. So that was pretty embarrassing.

K: Haha! Do you guys want another daughter?

B: Either way it’s fine with us, as long

as he or she is healthy.

hen the striking 31-year old Irish native, Una Healy, walks into a room, you immediately know that you’re staring at a pop star. These are the exact words of our crew present the day of the shoot. She has “it.” As 1/5 of the girl group that has taken the UK by storm, Una is now front row and center to a blossoming career together with four other stunning ladies—collectively known as The Saturdays. The band, formed back in 2007, has enjoyed massive success in their homeland, garnering several silver certifications from the British Phonographic Industry, the British record industry’s trade association. Una is actually the only non-local Londoner in the group, but this did not dampen the green-with-gold-flecks-eyed goddess’ following in England, or in other parts of Europe, for that matter.

“My idol is Sheryl Crow, so when I was like 13, she had that song “All I Wanna Do,” and I remember just thinking I want to be her. All I wanna be is her.”

The pop group (whom many regard as the modern-day Spice Girls), are breaking into the US through a muchanticipated reality show aptly titled, “Chasing the Saturdays,” that is set to air on E! every Sunday at 10 PM. It will chronicle the ladies as they settle into a new city and try to replicate their success in the US after having signed a deal with Mercury Records, while maintaining somewhat long-distance relationships with their respective husbands and significant others who are back in the UK. The cameras will also follow Mollie, Frankie, Vanessa, Rochelle (who recently announced her pregnancy with husband Marvin Humes, a member of the boy band JLS, making her the second soon-to-be mom in the group).

Una sits down with us for a minute to talk about her Beckham-ish love story with counterpart hottie husband, England national rugby union player, Ben Foden, and life on tour with her very own “super nanny” in tow, as they all do their part in caring for their 10-month old lovey, Aoife Belle.

How did it feel to audition for The Saturdays and get the part?

Congratulations––14 singles, 4 albums, and 3 tours.

Thank you! It’s gone by so quickly, but we actually have been together for 5 years now. I feel like I know all their life apart from being in The Saturdays ‘cause it feels like it’s just such a huge thing in my life, that I almost forget

what life was like before.

And how is it like to travel and perform with four other women? What are the best and worst parts of doing that?

The best is that I just get to travel

have got about a million people in there—with our management, hair and makeup, stylist, all of us, sometimes we’ve got our friends backstage and everything. But we’re used to being in confined spaces together, since we are with each other almost 24/7, so we know each other inside out. There’s really not a downside to it. It’s like we’ve got every girl’s dream job, being in a girl band, pop stars…

And now your own TV show. Do you have a beauty regimen or favorite products?

bc-mag.com around with my four best friends. We get along so well, and we’re always there for each other. The better thing about being in a girl band, apart from being a solo artist, is that you’ve got each other all the time—through the highs and lows we’re there for each other. The lows would be… (Ponders) Sharing a dressing room?

Actually, it’s not each other. When we’re in a dressing room, we literally

Yeah. I always clean my makeup off at nighttime—cleanse the skin, put moisturizer on. I use eye cream, and drink a lot of water—that’s a really good tip because when you get dehydrated, you get dry skin and all that. So I think a key tip is that, and try to get as much beauty sleep as you can, too. One of the downsides of our job is that sometimes we work really late, but then we have to wake up really early again the next morning. So sometimes we don’t get enough sleep and we can be quite tired, and that’s the hardest part of the job, really.

What 3 songs do you have in your iPod?

Oh gosh. To be honest with you, since having the baby I don’t even listen to my iPod. I never get any “me time” anymore. It’s always like when I’m working with the girls, as soon as I get back, I’m with my baby and I just want to spend every moment with her. So normally, it’s listening to the Disney Channel, “Hotdog,

You mentioned that you’re busy with your baby. How do you stay fit while being on the road?

I’m just always on the go all the time.

And like with our job, we dance and we’re always performing—practicing choreography, being on tour and on stage and all that. And just walking Aoife as well—I’m always taking her on brisk walks, it’s a great method of exercise. Over here in L.A., I’ve seen guys wearing running gear from head to toe, running, pushing the pram.

I saw one guy with all his running gear on and he had twins, and he was like power running with them. It’s so bizarre. We wouldn’t see that back home, but it’s definitely a method of keeping fit.

Definitely. And so as far as staying fit, you were athletic and you swam, but how did your interest shift to arts, entertainment and singing?

Well, I’ve always been interested because my mother was a singer and she passed down her guitar to me when I was 13. Her brother, my uncle Declan Nerney, is a big country star in Ireland. I grew up listening to country music back home and going to his gigs, and I started writing songs when I was 12, when I started playing guitar and all. It sort of happened that way. In school, it was greatly encouraged by all my teachers. You know, really always got me out there, performing and studying music in school and everything. And then I completed my full education, but I went on then after that to try and find something to fall back on, because I always knew music is what I wanted to do. I wanted to pursue a performing career.

What are some of your influences musically?

My influences are country music from my uncle. My idol is Sheryl Crow, so when I was like 13, she had that song “All I Wanna Do,” and I remember just thinking I want to be her. All I wanna be is her.

And you’re here right now until the sun comes down over Santa Monica Boulevard, right?

Yeah, exactly. Oh yeah, we are!

See? Full circle. What’s your biggest accomplishment, musically?

Oh, it is always milestones along the way. Like I could’ve said it’s our first top 10 record, then our tenth top 10 record, and then you know, now hopefully the next step for us is to break over here in the States and do this TV show, and see what happens.

far, how are they receiving you?

Really well. We’ve done a couple of shows over here, and we’re just so surprised to see that we have actually got a small fan base already. People have been following us since the beginning, since 2008, and they’ve got all our albums. We did a little show at The Roxy and we’ve quite a number of fans singing along to all the album tracks and everything, so hopefully we will gather more fans along the way.

Nice. And what are you guys expecting from the TV show? What are your hopes and expectations? Bigger venues?

Hopefully we get more air play and do some more TV performances along with the TV shows—that’s a huge exposure for us. But we really don’t

know, to be honest, what we’re letting ourselves in for because we just go along. Our lives have been [fulfilling] as we go along. When the show comes out I think that we’re all gonna be scared to watch it, because there will be things we said so long ago, I can’t even remember saying that.

Like with the photo shoot of BC. You never know what photos we’re gonna use.

Oh yeah. She’s more photogenic than me though, so...

Are you gonna move to the US, or stay bicoastal? Are you a fish-and-chips kind of gal, or hamburger-and-fries?

I don’t want to say I’m a traveler, because I’m not like a gypsy—but

I’m always on the road. If you ask, “Where’s home?” I’ll say, “On the road.” I come from Ireland, I relocated to the UK for the band, and now we’re over here for a period of time before we go back home. If this show goes international, that’s where we might be covering different territories like hopefully Australia, Asia, and everything. When I’m touring and living off my suitcase, that almost feels like home to me. It’s strange, but it’s my life, you know?

Yeah. So when you met Ben, how did that feel like? How did that come about?

What was that love story, and how did it feel for you both to transition to becoming a mother and a father?

Ben saw me on TV, basically, and he

He tracked you down?

Yeah, [Ben] was with his agent and he was just asking him, “You’re single now, are you interested in anyone?”

And that’s just when our group was beginning, and he’d see me on a TV show and he’s like, “I really like that girl, the Irish one from The Saturdays.” And his agent was like, “Oh let me see if I can make it happen.” And then next thing is, I got this e-mail and a phone call saying that ‘this guy Ben, check him out, he’s interested in you.’ So I said, “Yeah, I’ll go on a date with him,” and that was it. After 3 ½ years, we got married and we had the baby first, so we kind it did it the other way around.

Do you have any crazy or funny stories?

You’re both famous, obviously huge icons. Do people follow you everywhere in the UK or over here? Like paparazzi?

We live in the countryside and just outside London, so we don’t really get

too many around. But there was this one guy, one time, who came into the supermarket after us and he was hiding behind all the shelves. I think he knocked down one of the stands of stuff because he got kicked out because he was invading—not just our privacy—but other people that are shopping there.

What was your favorite memory from your wedding?

I’ve got a video of a 3-minute clip where I’ve got Shania Twain’s, “From This Moment On” as background music and it’s all the moments of that...

What song did you dance to?

It’s cheesy, but it was Bryan Adams’ “Everything I Do”—it’s our first dance.

He’d do it for you. That’s great. And how did you guys both react when you became mother to Aoife? Did that change your lifestyle? Becoming a mother versus

a pop star—

I sort of feel like I’m doing both now, so it’s just like life goes on. Having a baby is such a natural thing. I’m a few years older than the other girls, and I think people kind of expected it with me and Ben. Getting married and babies seemed the natural progression in life. The girls love her so much—they’re like her aunties, and all the fans love her and everything.

So she comes around with me all the time, too.

Aoife Belle. How did you choose that interesting and unique name?

Well, Aoife is a very popular Irish name. It’s spelled A-O-I-F-E and people can’t get their heads around it. It’s pronounced “Ee-fa.”

I’m glad I said it right.

And Belle is, “beautiful.” Aoife’s sort of the Irish for “beautiful” as well. So it’s ‘beautiful-beautiful.’

until she’s a year old or until she’s walking. For photo shoots it’s fine, but she’s usually in baby clothes and sleep suits. And she’s got quite a bit of hair, so her signature style is the hair bow.

What about for other things, where do you shop?

Oh, Mamas and Papas, for strollers. They’ve got such lovely stuff—clothes, prams, just everything. It’s a really good store.

My mother. She’s here with us today, and she’s come to most places with me. She’s the most amazing, nanny, granny—she’s a granny—but she’s like “super nanny” because she’s just so good…

What about Aoife makes you laugh?

“Super Nanny” like the show.

Awesome.

Just little faces and expressions, and she’s starting to say, “Mama” now. I did this video of her where I was like, “Mamama, “ and she was like “Mamamama,” and I was like, “Okay, dadadada,” and then she goes, “No, mamamama.” So, she likes “Mama” most at the moment, but maybe that’s because she doesn’t see enough of her father yet. She might start saying, “Dada” now when we go home.

What’s your favorite thing to shop for, for Aoife?

Loads of clothes! I love Baby Boden—they do beautiful clothing. And Baby Monsoon.

Is that just in the UK?

No, I think Baby Boden is international, and Monsoon—I think with Accessorize.

Dresses. Not so much shoes at the moment, because her feet are kind of developing so I don’t like to put shoes on a small baby
