CONCEPT STATEMENT Editors of Occupy!: Scenes From Occupied America include: Carla Blumenkranz, Keith Gessen, Mark Grief, Sarah Leonard, Sarah Resnick, Nikil Saval, Eli Schmitt and Astra Taylor. Contributors: Judith Butler, Angela Davis, Jodi Dean, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer, Zoltan Gluck, Elizabeth Gumport, Doug Henwood, Christopher Herring, Svetlana Kitto, L. A. Kauffman, Kung Li, Audrea Lim, Manissa Maharawl, Thomas Paine, Marco Roth, Marina Sitrin, Rebecca Solnit, Stephen Squibb, Sunaura Taylor, Alex Vitale and Slavoj Zizek.
The typeface selected for the book cover was based on Neutraface created by Richard Neutra. Known as a lettering that is open and unobtrusive, the typeface is an appropriate selection to represent the book due to its warm and human feel. In a conversation with Anderson she explained how she used Neutraface titling and broke it apart in Illustrator and then moved those shapes into Photoshop where she added shadows and noise. It also appears that images were placed into the letterforms and altered through opacity.
Art Direction
Target Audience
Lettering and book cover design was accomplished by Kelli Anderson, a 2011 Webby official honoree. Kelli is an artist and designer who experiments in creating images and experiences through new conventions. Along with experimenting in different artistic mediums, Kelli teaches art history at Pratt.
The target audience of the book promotional web site is males and females between the ages of 20 and 30. These individuals are liberal in their political and social views and have high school diplomas and are attending or have graduated from college. Most of the people in the target demographic are new to the American work force and have matured in an xera where employment opportunities have been difficult. This audience tends to be over educated for the positions they hold. The large educational debts that this population owes in contrast to the low paying positions they hold add to the injustice this slice of the population feel.
Background The book Occupy!: Scenes From Occupied America takes an in depth look at the Occupy movement which started in the fall of 2011. From its small grassroots beginnings at a protest camp in downtown Manhattan, the movement exploded into a global uprising. This in depth analysis combines images, reportage and analysis to explain the birth of a counterculture. The book covers first-hand accounts of the start of Occupy Wall Street and expands to detail the contentious debates and human reflections that followed. The book is published by Verso Books, which is the largest independent, radical publishing house in the English-speaking world. Verso publishes roughly eighty books a year and houses editors in New York, London and Paris. Founded in the late 70’s, Verso has grown into emerging fields covering topics such as theory, international politics, social history and philosophy. Along with its publications and interventions in international politics in the fields of terrorism and war, Verso has branched out to cover fiction, biography and memoir titles.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Media At this time this project is a web based promotion book site. Consideration is to be given to multiple operating systems and browsers as well as responsive design for various tablets and smart phones. Future media could involve television, radio, newspapers, posters and flyers.
Obstacles
Support Statement
At this time one of the largest obstacles to overcome is complacency. With an economy that is slowly recovering the ideals and theologies behind the Occupy Movement have lost and can continue to lose momentum. While the corruption, political stalemate, and misguided regulations remain in place that reward corporations and the ultra-rich at the expense of the 99%, strategy, action and involvement dwindles as the catalyst of the great recession slowly fades.
The benefit of this project is to build a stronger society and to eliminate or reduce greed and corruption. While this is a monumental task that will be hard fought with no guarantee of success, the benefits far outweigh the obstacles it is attempting to overcome. The key goals of the Occupy Movement are to create equality and justice for the largest segment of the population. The attempt to strengthen and re-establish the middle class will reinforce the American economy and build a stronger country.
Key Benefit
Tone
The key benefit of this project is knowledge, for knowledge truly is power. The intent of the book web site is to promote Occupy!: Scenes From Occupied America and the message it sends. It is the intent of this project to bring about a positive change through information and education.
The tone of this project will be informative, straightforward, and based in fact. It is important to relay information that is relative and truthful due to the tension and scrutiny that this movement receives.
