L I V I N G ACCESS O R I ES VANHALST
The Vanhalst-Larridon family has been a family of creative entrepreneurs ever since the start of the 20th century.
Until the age of 33, Camille Larridon lived with his parents where he built a little workshop behind the house. As of 1945, he started manufacturing his own furniture in an old shed that was used for dressing flax. The warmth of the house was better suited for varnishing, which is why he used to finish most of his pieces at the kitchen table. In 1950, Camille decided to build a new workshop and open a store. His wife, Maria Vanneste, gave up her job sewing shoes at home and set up a small mattress business in the parlor of their house.
His eldest daughter, Jenny Larridon, is the driving force behind Vanhalst Birth and Baby Shower Favors since 1968.
Right up until the final days of his life in 2003, Camille used to come into Larridon Furnishing every week in his Sunday best and talk to the customers.
Frank and Sophie Vanhalst completely rewrote the business plan of Vanhalst Birth and Baby Shower Favors in the early years of 2000 and launched bb collections. It resulted in a rapid
Pierre Vanhalst earned a living as a photographer right after the First World War. Several of his sons followed in his footsteps. But not Lieven Vanhalst. In 1968, he became a pastry chef, a very exclusive and creative trade at the time. The patisserie business branched out into a birth and baby shower favors store, which became a wholesale company in the 90’s.
exponential growth of the business. Little by little, Vanhalst grew from a traditional wholesale company into a leading, creative enterprise that is firmly established in the market of birth and baby shower favors, wedding thank you gifts, little keepsake presents, and small packaging designs under the brand name bb collections. In 2011, they sold the retail business in order to focus on the creation and development of unique ranges and customization. With Atelier Pierre, Vanhalst enters the market of living accessories, alongside the market of birth and baby shower favors, wedding thank you gifts, little keepsake presents, and small packaging designs.
Respect for the environment In 2009, the Vanhalst company building was awarded the ‘Quality Industrial Buildings of West Flanders’ certification mark. The Vanhalst family values are clearly reflected in the design of the building. Not only are creativity, simplicity, and functionality important, there is also a focus on the consideration for people, the environment, budget, and tradition. In order to emphasize the extent of their involvement, Vanhalst also signed the ‘West Flemish Charter for Sustainable Enterprise’. For this, a company voluntarily commits to work proactively on specific topics. This charter is a tool for adding structure to a sustainable enterprise policy, and it is the driving force for a continuous improvement of environmental, social, and economic achievements.
Working together with young Belgian designers With the brand name ‘Atelier Pierre’, Vanhalst offers young Belgian designers an opportunity to conceive their very FIRST range of living accessories. Sophie Vanhalst, creative director, supports these young designers throughout the creative process. ‘Atelier Pierre’ refers to two impressive great-grandfathers: Pierre Vanhalst and Camille Larridon. In the early 20th century, Pierre earned a living as a creative entrepreneur and a photographer. The link with ‘Atelier’ comes from Camille, who had a workshop where he made furniture. ‘Atelier’ perfectly describes the environment we wish to create for designers who are just starting out. It hints at craft, conception, and skill… ‘Pierre’ on the other hand adds character and authenticity.
The creation of a ‘life forest’ with 1,000 poplars (short rotation wood) on the grounds adjacent to the company building proves the fact that sustainable enterprise is at the top of the agenda. This commitment fits in perfectly with the continuous pursuit of a well-balanced concern for the economic and social impact of entrepreneurship as well as for the ecological consequences.
Atelier Pierre is therefore a strong and elegant brand that is rooted in tradition and workmanship. Products are preferably made from sustainable and affordable materials. Incorporating photography can and will definitely offer additional value.

She was convinced this would be her future direction. “When I accidentally came across the Industrial Product Design program at Howest College and my fifth-year teacher agreed that this was definitely something for me, it was an easy choice to make. The combination of the creative and the functional genuinely appealed to me.” Soothing design with a playful touch “I love to mix and match. I enjoy working with different materials, structures… I like to combine and contrast. I always like it when a product allows the user to get creative with it. It adds that little extra to the product, which is what I try to incorporate in my designs.” Her designs are indeed a harmony of soothing design with a playful touch.

Paulien has had the creative bug for drawing and crafts ever since childhood. Between the ages of six and eighteen, she went to art school, where she fully indulged in drawing, painting and arts and crafts. She loved all things beautiful, and she still does… At age ten, she became fascinated by art and painted large canvases together with her dad. “I still do occasionally… I love to paint in the garden in the summertime.”
Innovation and creative solutions “When I walked past our noticeboard and everything fell off for the 100th time, I felt that this concept desperately needed to be more functional, more playful and trendier. I think that many families have way too much on their noticeboards. They are poorly organized and look cluttered. ” As we developed WO+RK, working with creative director Sophie Vanhalst was a real eye-opener. Feedback, guidance in structured work and attention to detail helped Paulien through the entire process. A designer who is just starting out discovers a whole world between inspiration and production. “In this way, you identify practical obstacles in the overall process of turning an idea into a product. At that point, it is a matter of putting things into perspective and finding creative solutions, and so the interaction with the entire Vanhalst team was an enriching experience.”

From origami to interior design accessories: meet facet. Few things are so personal and diverse as an interior. It is a combination of a host of choices and considerations. A whole of stories and materials, a reflection of its inhabitants. facet, the new collection of interior design accessories by the Atelier Pierre family, complements this story perfectly. It aims to be an expression of creative diversity and add a certain ambiance to every interior. Within the scope of Designregio Kortrijk’s 5x5 project, the creative team at Vanhalst and the people behind Cides Product Design joined forces. Drawing inspiration from the art of origami and the Far East , they conceived this elegant, geometric collection. A host of colours and materials were used for facet. From powder pink to tropical green and from cork to cement. Feel free to try out new combinations and create your own mix. Use the wine cooler as a vase or the pen holder as a flowerpot. Anything goes... After all, it’s your story.

facet was developed within the scope of the 5x5ÂŽ project of Designregio Kortrijk, which is the platform for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship of the region of Kortrijk. Within the 5x5ÂŽ programme, five companies from the region Kortrijk-Roeselare-Ieper-Tielt are given the opportunity to work with a design duo, in this case Cides. For an entire year, both teams collaborated very closely to eventually present this collection of interior design accessories together.
facet Cides
Cides and Vanhalst, a match made in heaven facet was conceived through a collaboration between Cides Product Design and Vanhalst. In other words, ace designers meet decades of entrepreneurial experience. Cides contributed refined ideas, a high degree of functionality and strong design; Vanhalst added feeling for business, logistic organisation and trendsetting to the mix. A match made in heaven. From design to logistics In addition to the challenge the design represented, the collaboration also had to be logistically feasible. Customers often do not see the entire workflow behind a product although this is also a key aspect of the overall story. Fortunately the collaboration was as effortless as it was enthusiastic and the success of the undertaking was never in doubt. “So many aspects have to be elaborated for a collection to have any chance of success. That is why every employee, every link and every talent are indispensable.” facet In-depth market research was conducted for facet and the new team went in search of new and future trends. The development of Facet is the culmination of an intensive process of preparation. Eventually origami and the Far East were the main poles of attraction. The Japanese art of folding paper inspired a geometric collection with sleek lines and soft, natural colours and materials. Bringing nature indoors.
facet from Atelier Pierre® received the DesignX50 label DesignX50 is a Belgian label where the most innovative products and projects of the South West Flanders region are being recognised. Together with the DesignX50 Label, granted by Designregio Kortrijk, it shows the innovative and creative power of the regional companies. It provides the facet collection of Atelier Pierre® with a recognition for its outstanding creative achievement.

Chap-O Simplicity and a pure line are also the starting point in the second ´range´ of Atelier Pierre. For Chap-O, designer Daisy Bohyn drew inspiration from the roaring twenties and thirties, the period when Pierre started working as a photographer.
Daisy takes us back to a tumultuous era in the contours of two hats, Henri and Léonore, that speak to the imagination. She refines them into polished and lacquered black wood, ready to make a statement against the wall.
As ´mood lighting´ they accentuate their cheeriness and self-assurance by making the environment shimmer in indirect and dimmable LED light. Her eye for detail and an infectious enthusiasm for technology and material also gave the young Belgian designer an opportunity to work in this collection with a design icon … Miffy.

The first signs of Daisy Bohyn´s fascination for architecture and design already manifested themselves in early childhood. Even then she enjoyed taking all kinds of things apart. “I should add that I was also crazy about drawing”, Daisy says with a laugh. “So it wasn´t altogether surprising that, after primary school, I opted for a secondary school with a focus on the arts. I wanted an education that would give free rein to my creative thinking.” “My passion for interior design developed gradually, and I registered for an interior architecture programme. That enabled me to get a clear picture of the manifold possibilities in the field of design. To be able to develop a broader vision on products and technologies, I later chose to get hands-on training in Industrial Product Design at the Howest.” Equilibrium “In each phase of a design process, I strive for an equilibrium between functionality, philosophy and aesthetic added value. In everything I create, my ambition is to fuse the two worlds of interior design and product development.” “The idea for Chap-O came to me when I immersed myself in the era where Pierre Vanhalst - to whom Atelier Pierre owes its name - was at his most creative. The hat fashion of the 1920´s immediately struck me, for example. I almost spontaneously began drawing typical hats from that period, with powerful, sweeping lines.” Mature “I was delighted to immediately find myself on the same wavelength with creative director Sophie Vanhalst. She was there throughout the design process to offer constructive feedback and sensible advice. That turned the Chap-O lighting collection into a very maturely elaborated project. Sophie gave me a chance to test out the theory I learned at school against the real business world.” “As a company, Vanhalst made sure that, day after day, I could continue working on the assignment with total motivation and great enthusiasm. The enjoyable family atmosphere was especially stimulating. Moreover, I appreciate that the company was willing to take a leap into the unknown by allowing me to work with LED lighting.”

History of miffy Miffy was «born» in 1955. While on holiday in Egmond aan Zee, Dick Bruna would tell his eldest son, Sierk, bedtime stories about a little, white bunny, who scampered around the garden of their holiday home. This bunny became the inspiration for Miffy. Later, when Dick began sketching Miffy, he decided he would prefer to draw the bunny in a little dress, rather than a pair of trousers, and so Miffy became a little girl bunny. In the early years, Miffy looked a bit like a fluffy toy with floppy ears, but from 1963 onwards, when the books were first published in square format, she became the Miffy we know today, gazing confidently at the reader with her little, black eyes. She has two pointy ears and little chubby cheeks. In «miffy’s dream» (1979) and all subsequent stories, her ears and face are slightly rounder and more balanced. After that, her body became somewhat rounder and softer. After «miffy in the tent» (1995), her appearance remained much the same until 2001, when the proportions of her head and body changed slightly in «miffy the ghost», making her look more like toddler. And after a new baby arrived in «miffy and the new baby» (2003), she became a big sister and looked like a real little girl bunny.

Miami
Miami Inspiration It´s the bright colours of the neon signs on the geometrical art deco houses. It´s the tropical atmosphere between the Florida Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean. It´s the North American version of the Caribbean. Miami is a microclimate, drenched in brilliant sunshine. And it served as the inspiration for a new collection of living accessories.
Choice of the material A flamingo, an alligator, a snake, a palm tree, a cactus and a pineapple play the leading roles in the following tableau of Atelier Pierre. They’re made from recycled MDF painted on one side. The cheerful colours confidently attract attention, while the white wood assures a bit of shadow. A playful interaction. With the key figures, designer Eva Desloovere came up with a diverse group of decorative objects that speak the same exotic visual language. Ideal for cheering up the living room and bringing a bit of Miami into your home.

Eva Desloovere Product design Howest
Miami ”Eva’s been productive again”, my kindergarten teacher used to sigh, whenever I was caught filling the back covers of the schoolbooks with my drawings. Apparently that was enough of a signal for my parents. When I was 6 they sent me to a Freinet school, where my creativity was encouraged in every possible way. It didn´t make any difference to me whether it was during or after school; I was always busy. Drawing and painting, naturally, but I got just as much pleasure out of modelling with clay, pottery-making, making candles or crocheting. Most of all I liked to copy already-existing drawings. Then, once I’d mastered the style, I would create my own designs. A perfect match During secondary school, reading books and experimenting with writing short stories and poems took my focus off the visual sphere somewhat. Coming to the end of my grammar school years, I had to settle on a discipline and learned about the Industrial Product Design programme. I was immediately sold. During the training at the Howest, my creative side and my feeling for detail, which I had developed during my Latin grammar school, suddenly matched up perfectly with one another. Moreover, that’s where I became aware of the vast realm in which you can have an impact as a designer. Nature Nature is a continual source of inspiration. I like to work with organic forms in my designs. But the playful aspect is also a constant. These two aspects come together beautifully in the collection that I was able to develop for Atelier Pierre. The exotic, summery feeling of a place like Miami appealed to me enormously. For a young designer, however, there’s a whole world to discover between inspiration and production. I’m especially grateful to Creative Director Sophie Vanhalst for standing by me from the moment I first had the idea for Miami. Her feeling for trends and eye for detail positively influenced the design process, but also helped me develop greater confidence in my own possibilities.

noRdic For the first range of Atelier Pierre® living accessories, the creative team at Vanhalst went looking for what is essential, for what is simple. They found it in a Scandinavian design: minimalist animal figures made up of pieces, like a jigsaw puzzle, that are laser cut from a sheet of pale unfinished wood. Atelier Pierre’s® noRdic collection includes a wide range of animal figures, boxes, packaging, and decorative elements. The pure design and the use of warm, sustainable materials such as wood, kraft paper, and recycled cardboard make the items from the noRdic range stand out as stylish pieces of decoration that work in every home.
A strong connection The noRdic animals look elegant against the contours of an alpine peak made from unfinished wood. The little recycled cardboard boxes that hold your jewelry or your precious keepsakes fit perfectly and add a glacier blue, a snow white or a spring green color to the mountaintop. The cases in various shapes and sizes are also made from unfinished wood and bring the entire range together beautifully. Collaboration The noRdic range was stunningly created and developed by the young Belgian designer Bert Declercq. With a few strokes of his pen, he drew the contours of a moose, a llama, a rabbit, a deer, and a polar bear. He came up with the idea to have the animals consist of about four pieces that have been laser cut from a sheet of plywood. Putting together the figure creates a strong sense of involvement and adds a playful, hands-on dimension.

His interest in design and creation led him to the Industrial Design course at Howest College. He was completely fascinated with this course, which his nephew had finished a few years before. “Frankly, I’m not quite sure what I enjoy more, the physical or the graphic aspect of designing. A combination of both would probably be ideal.” This is reflected in the noRdic collection, which he designed for Atelier Pierre. When asked what is so typical of his work, he says: “Two years ago, you could have called me a minimalist but I believe my style has evolved since then. My love for geometry is still here, though.” The idea for a jigsaw puzzle, the early start of the noRdic range, was conceived in the college workshop. During a practical lesson, Bert was tinkering with sheets of wood. He made all kinds of notes and sketches, and eventually came up with the first outlines of the moose puzzle - the birth of noRdic - yet it was still far removed from the final product. The collaboration with creative director Sophie Vanhalst was a very effective and complementary experience for Bert. Day-to-day coaching, mentoring, and feedback, and professional advice in the end made sure that his designs put across the right values and met every condition for manufacturing, easy transportation, and affordability.

“Vanhalst gave me the opportunity to do something new. They believed in me, but most of all they helped me. There’s a very welcoming family atmosphere, so I could always approach them with any questions I had. I took full advantage of this, which greatly contributed to the noRdic collection.”
