“The Vanhalst - Larridon family as been a family of creative entrepeneurs ever since the start of the 20th century”

NL - Tot zijn 33 jaar woonde Camille Larridon bij zijn ouders waar hij een kleine werkplaats had gebouwd achter het huis. Vanaf 1945 werkte hij in een oud zwingelkot aan zijn eigen meubels. De afwerking gebeurde vaak aan de keukentafel, waar de huiselijke warmte beter geschikt was bij het vernissen. In 1950 besloot hij een nieuwe werkplaats te bouwen en een winkel te openen. Pierre Vanhalst verdiende net na de Eerste Wereldoorlog de kost als fotograaf. Veel van zijn zonen zijn hem daarin gevolgd. Lieven Vanhalst niet. Hij vestigde zich in 1968, samen met zijn vrouw Jenny Larridon, als patissier in Izegem. Omdat ze er weinig mensen kenden, besloten ze om doopsuiker en bijhorende verpakking aan hun assortiment toe te voegen. Heel wat jonge mensen vonden zo snel de weg naar hun zaak.

In de jaren 90 werd de zaak uitgebouwd tot een groothandel. En aangezien creatief ondernemerschap ten huize Vanhalst-Larridon al een aantal generaties van ouders op kinderen wordt doorgegeven, stappen in 2001 ook zoon en dochter Frank en Sophie mee in het bedrijf. Met de lancering van het merk bb collections® maakten zij de overgang van klassieke groothandel naar een dynamische onderneming op de markt van de geboorte-, communie- en huwelijksgschenken, algemene geschenken en kleine verpakkingen. Sinds 2015 is Vanhalst met Atelier Pierre® aanwezig in de markt van ‘living accessories’. Al snel bleek ook dat de geschenkjes die de Vanhalst-designers creëren, uitnodigen om te koesteren en te etaleren. En met een exclusieve licentie op zak om te werken met de iconische figuur van nijntje was het fundament van een “must have” Atelier Pierre Junior collectie gelegd.

Nombre de ses fils le suivirent dans cette voie, à l’exception de Lieven Vanhalst. Il s’installe en 1968, avec sa femme Jenny Larridon, en tant que chef pâtissier à Izegem. Cides and Vanhalst, a match made in heaven Facet was conceived through a collaboration between Cides Product Design and Vanhalst. Cides contributed refined ideas, a high degree of functionality and strong design; Vanhalst added feeling for business, logistic organisation and trendsetting to the mix. from design to logistics In addition to the challenge the design represented, the collaboration also had to be logistically feasible. Customers often do not see the entire workflow behind a product although this is also a key aspect of the overall story. Paulien Callewaert

Paulien has had the creative bug for drawing and crafts ever since childhood. Between the ages of six and eighteen, she went to art school, where she fully indulged in drawing, painting, arts and crafts. She continued to be captivated by her love for drawing & crafts and was convinced this would be her future direction. Soothing design with a playful touch “I love to mix and match. I enjoy working with different materials, structures… I like to combine and contrast.” That is what characterizes Paulien’s passion: being creative and product design. “I always like it when a product allows the user to get creative with it, when the product is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.” Her designs are always a harmony of soothing design with a playful touch. Innovation and creative solutions “When I walked past our noticeboard and everything fell off for the 100th time, I felt that this concept desperately needed to be revisited. Bert has always been a natural at creating things, even as a child. “My very first experience must have been K’nex. Once I had finished the model on the box, I would take it apart and build creations of my own.” Design and Creation His interest in design and creation led him to Industrial Design. “Frankly, I’m not quite sure what I enjoy more, the physical or the graphic aspect of design. A combination of both would probably be ideal.” This is reflected in the noRdic collection, which he designed for Atelier Pierre.

Minimalist or geometric When asked what is so typical of his work, he says: “Two years ago, you could have called me a minimalist but I believe my style has evolved since then. My love for geometry is still here, though.” The idea for a jigsaw puzzle, the early start of the noRdic range, was conceived in the college workshop. During a practical lesson, Bert was tinkering with sheets of wood. He made all kinds of notes and sketches, and eventually came up with the first outlines of the moose puzzle – the birth of noRdic – yet it was still far removed from the final product.

Miami Inspiration It´s the bright colours of the neon signs on the geometrical art deco houses. It´s the tropical atmosphere between the Florida Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean. It´s the North American version of the Caribbean. Miami is a microclimate, drenched in brilliant sunshine. And it served as the inspiration for a new collection of living accessories.

Material choice A flamingo, an alligator, a snake, a cactus, a palm tree and a pineapple play the leading roles in the following tableau of Atelier Pierre. They’re made from recycled MDF painted on one side. The cheerful colours confidently attract attention, while the white wood assures a bit of shadow. A playful interaction.

Eva Desloovere

“Eva’s been productive again, my kindergarten teacher used to sigh, whenever I was caught filling the back covers of the schoolbooks with my drawings.” Apparently that was enough of a signal for my parents. When I was 6 they sent me to a Freinet school, where my creativity was encouraged in every possible way. It didn´t make any difference to me whether it was during or after the school hours; I was always busy. Drawing and painting, naturally, but I got just as much pleasure out of modelling with clay, pottery-making, making candles or crocheting. Most of all I liked to copy already-existing drawings. Then, once I’d mastered the style, I would do my own drawings in the same vein.

A perfect match During secondary school, reading books and experimenting with writing short stories and poems took my focus off the visual sphere somewhat. Until, having come to the end of my grammar school years, I had to settle on a discipline and I learned about the Industrial Product Design programme. I was immediately sold. During the training at the Howest, my creative side and my feeling for detail, which I had developed during my Latin grammar school, suddenly matched up perfectly with one another. Moreover, that’s where I became aware of the vast realm in which you can have an impact as a designer.”

Nature Nature is a continual source of inspiration. I like to work organic forms into my designs. But the playful aspect is also a constant. These two aspects come together beautifully in the collection that I was able to develop for Vanhalst. The exotic, summery feeling of a place like Miami appealed to me enormously. For a young designer, however, there’s a whole world to discover between inspiration and production. I’m especially grateful to Creative Director Sophie Vanhalst for standing by me from the moment I first had the idea for Miami. Her feeling for trends and eye for detail positively influenced the design process, but also helped me develop greater confidence in my own possibilities.

Simplicity and a pure line Simplicity and a pure line are also the starting point in this ´range´ of Atelier Pierre. For the collection, designer Daisy Bohyn drew inspiration from the roaring twenties and thirties, the period when Pierre started working as a photographer. The vocabulary for the new series developed with the contours of two hats, Henri and Léonore, that speak to the imagination. Daisy refines them into polished and lacquered wood, ready to make a statement against the wall. As ´mood lighting´ they make the environment shimmer in indirect and dimmable LED light. Her infectious enthusiasm and eye for detail also gave her an opportunity, in a unique partnership with Mercis bv, to work with Miffy. The young Belgian designer uses the same technique and the same material to confirm the design icon status of the main character from Dick Bruna´s children´s books.

Daisy Bohyn

The first signs of Daisy Bohyn´s fascination for architecture and design already manifested themselves in early childhood. Even then she enjoyed taking all kinds of things apart. “I should add that I was also crazy about drawing, so it wasn´t altogether surprising that, I opted for a secondary school with a focus on the arts.” “My passion for interior design developed gradually, and I registered for an Interior Architecture programme. That enabled me to get a clear picture of the manifold possibilities in the field of design. To be able to develop a broader vision on products and technologies, I later chose to get hands-on training in Industrial Product Design.” Equilibrium “In each phase of a design process, I strive for an equilibrium between functionality, philosophy and aesthetic added value. In everything I create, my ambition is to fuse the two worlds of interior design and product development.” “The idea for Wall Art, and more specifically Chap-O, came to me when I immersed myself in the era where Pierre Vanhalst - to whom Atelier Pierre owes its name - was at his most creative. The hat fashion of the 1920´s immediately struck me.”

Miffy Miffy was ÂŤbornÂť in 1955. While on holiday in Egmond aan Zee, Dick Bruna would tell his eldest son, Sierk, bedtime stories about a little, white bunny, who scampered around the garden of their holiday home. Later, when Dick began sketching Miffy, he decided he would prefer to draw the bunny in a little dress, rather than a pair of trousers, and so Miffy became a little girl bunny.
