If you were to ask the average person walking down the street what one of the important outcomes of going to school or going to an early learning centre is, they’re likely to mention literacy and learning to read.

It’s not surprising, really. After all, we need to know how to read in order to tackle the other parts of learning, so reading is vitally important.

Sure, you need some other skills to grasp the main concepts of maths and science, but without reading, you’re not going to get beyond the basics.

The Montessori sensory learning materials are only going to get you so far.

Your child will gain some basic prereading skills as well as some basics of learning to recognise letters and how to string them into words at a Montessori early learning centre.

That’s what the moveable alphabet and the sandpaper letters.

All children are encouraged to have fun with these (which is how they’ll think about the activities they do with them) as soon as they are ready for it, which will be one of the things their teacher/guide will be looking out for.

But for learning to really sink in and for reading to stay something fun and a part of everyday life, you need to back up what they learn at Montessori at home.

So what can you do to help your children read more and to pick up a love of reading?

Should you hide the TV in the cupboard and only get it out late at night or when they turn 16 so they turn to books for quiet entertainment?

you need to buy half the catalogue on Amazon Books and dedicate a whole room of the house as a library complete with rows and ows of shelves?

Well, you can if you want to, but there are other ways to help children learn to read and to love books.
