Vanjaar 60 jaar gelede met ‘n skitterende terugblik op die verlede met talryke sukses staaltjies te vertel skryf Banie alles toe aan die genade van die Hemelse Vader. Banie Barnard het op 2 Augustus vanjaar sy 80ste verjaarsdag gevier en is bederf deur familie en vriende. Die Angelo Mall Spar het ‘n spesiale verjaarsdagkoek aan Banie geskenk om hom te vereer vir 33 jaar getroue ondersteuning deur die jare en hegte vriendskapsbande. Banie is getroud net Dolphine Barnard, uit die huwelik is daar 3 dogters en 1 seun gebore. Die egpaar is tans 58 jaar getroud en saam deur baie diep waters koester hul herinneringe wat vir ewig saamgebind is. Hulle spog met 9 kleinkinders en 2
agterkleinkinders wat diep in oupa en ouma se harte gesetel is. Banie en Dolphine het die gemeenskap van Nigel bedien, in verskillende kringe beweeg en hul bydrae waar nodig was met ywer gelewer. Hulle het ‘n passie gehad vir barmhartigheidsdienste en liefdadigheid. Na hul aftrede het hul lekker gereis en dit geniet om saam met die kinders te kuier en kleinkinders te bederf soos net oupa en ouma kan doen. Om ouma en oupa te wees was vir hul ‘n groot plesier. Banie het selfs op sy dag vir Nigel rugby gespeel. Hy was baie sportief en het ‘n liefde vir krieket en gholf gehad. Vlugbal was een van sy gunsteling sportsoorte wat hy beoefen het. Banie het getuig dat die Here in al hierdie jare met Hom en sy gesin was en deur die goeie en diep waters was God altyd getrou.

Missing: 15 000 Tablets, Ex tended lab strike
50 smartboards will hurt patients
The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) has vowed to intensify the strike by more than 5000 workers at the National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS). The negative effects of this strike are going to become very serious as thousands of medical tests are delayed. Gauteng is hardest hit by this strike as most NHLS laboratories are at a complete standstill while a small number are working with minimal staff. Intimidation and incidents of violence against those still working e.g. a rock was thrown at a non-striking worker at the Braamfontein laboratory. Expenses for the cash-strapped NHLS will mount as they are paying private laboratories to do the most urgent tests. NEHAWU has already gained a 7.3% salary increase, but is insisting on other work improvements and on insourcing. The Gauteng Health Department has added to the NHLS’s woes by not paying more than R2 billion in total dating back about five years. NEHAWU should think about the suffering of patients and settle this strike as soon as possible.
More needs to be done to safeguard Gauteng Province’s education resources. According to a reply from the Gauteng Education MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, between 2015 and 2016 a total of 122 smartboards and 17 520 tablets were stolen, with only 72 smartboards and 2 367 tablets recovered. This translates to 15 153 missing tablets and 50 missing smartboards over two years. While the full roll out of tablets for 2017 to Grade 12 learners at no-fee schools is something to be congratulated, we cannot shy away from the fact that the basics are still not in place: The Gauteng Department of Education missed the 30 November 2016 deadline to eradicate school structures built from asbestos, thus putting the lives of learners and educators at risk. A new deadline has not been set; MEC Lesufi is unable to account for the number of maths and science teachers in Gauteng, despite it being critical subjects for the advancement of the economy. basically a year after my operation. It was great being able to “come back” to the golf course and enjoy a game after so long. It was interesting how you “remember” the basics and while not being where you were before you “get back into it” quite quickly. This last week I took my return more seriously in that I decided to go back to the golf club that I had played at for many years when I was still playing a lot of golf. It was interesting how, as soon as I got out of the car, I felt “at home”. The practice putting green immediately reminded me of the times I had practiced. The balcony immediately reminded me of how we used to sit there after a game of golf watching the rest of the field coming in to the 18th green. It was interesting that as we moved to the 1 st tee to start our game how “at home” I felt. As I was thinking of this experience I was reminded of how I felt when I “came back” to church after being away from church for 25 years. The “home coming” was fantastic. While most of the people were strangers to me the presence of God and who God was in my life came rushing back. I immediately felt a connection to God and was amazed at how I felt that God had NEVER deserted me.

Here is my challenge to all the people out there who have “moved away” from God. Take the bold step to go to a service at the church of your choice. If you are welcomed and receive a message of meaning stay for three months and see what God does in your life. If you however do not feel comfortable in the church (after being there a few times) go to another church and see if you feel more welcome at the new church. Seek until you find a place that you can praise God and feel at home at the same time. Homecoming to God is an awesome experience, do not delay, take up the challenge and return home to God – He will welcome you home.

Kaper betaal met sy lewe ‘n Vermeende kaper is dood en twee opsporingsagente ligtelik beseer in ‘n ongeluk wat omstreeks 11:00 op 22 Julie net buite Balfour plaasgevind het. Volgens Balfour polisiewoordvoerder Cst Virginia Mavuso, het die kaping van die vragmotor, met vrag wat bestem was vir China Mall in Johannesburg, omstreeks 06:45 in Warden (KwaZulu-Natal) plaasgevind. Die vragmotorbestuurder is glo met ‘n vuurwapen in die gesig geslaan, waarna hy in die kattebak van ‘n motor gelaai en by Alexandra in Johannesburg afgelaai is. Hy kon egter daarin slaag om die kaping aan sy werkgewer te rapporteer nadat hy sy selfoon in sy broek versteek het. Intussen het die kaper die opsporingstoestel in die vragmotor vernietig, maar die
opsporingsmaatskappy (Capital Air) kon steeds daarin slaag om die sein vir nog sowat 15 minute na die kaping te spoor. Dit het ‘n reusesoektog wat ondermeer die inspan van ‘n helikopter behels het, tot gevolg gehad. Twee opsporingsagente het die vragmotor op die Balfour-pad opgespoor, waarna hulle hom van die pad probeer afdruk het. Die vermeende kaper het glo beheer verloor en die vragmotor aan die teenoorgestelde kant van die pad afgestuur waar dit binne die Suikerbosrivier tot stilstand gekom het. Dit is nog nie duidelik of die kaper op slag dood is en of hy later aan sy beserings beswyk het nie, maar die twee opsporingsagente is vir ligte beserings by ‘n nabygeleë hospitaal behandel.

Gauteng’s Green Scorpions lack the sting to fight environmental crimes Gauteng’s environment is falling victim to polluters as the province’s Green Scorpions have no sting in their tails to effect real change and bring offenders to book. To date, the agency in Gauteng has only managed to secure five court convictions, all of which received a suspended sentence with fines. It can take the agency up to five years to resolve a case and currently there is a 33-case backlog with the National Prosecuting Authority. The biggest challenge to the environment in Gauteng is the impact of industry and urban sprawl. The province’s river systems often become a dumping ground for industries who find this to be a “cheaper” means of disposing of goods rather than paying for sustainable waste disposal. High volumes of inmigration coupled by ailing infrastructure such as water treatment systems and
burgeoning landfill sites all play a part in adding to the destruction of the province’s environment. Similarly, there has been little effort made to take industries that pollute the air to task. The Gauteng Department of Economic Development under MEC Lebogang Maile, has made little effort to take environmental matters to heart. In the provincial government’s bid to fasttrack much-needed infrastructure, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are becoming more of a box-ticking exercise for compliance sake than actually looking at the impact that developments will have on the environment. MEC Maile is very good at making pronouncements on the work that he wants to do, but given the state of the province’s environment it would appear that actually getting his hands dirty is the last thing the MEC intends on doing.

Grafsteen raaisel
Volgens oorlewering het ek vandat ek ‘n kind was gehoor van die boer wat naby Balfour geboer het en deur weerlig gedood is. Navrae het nie juis meer lig op die saak gewerp nie. Maar daar is ‘n storie omtrent die graf. Oorlewering wou hê dat die boer se lande deur ‘n donderstorm en hael verwoes is. Hy was baie ontevrede met die Here dat die haelstorm sy lande getref het en hy het sy gevoel duidelik te kenne gegee. Hy is toe deur ‘n weerligstraal gedood en in die begraafplaas op Balfour begrawe. In daardie jare was Stasiestraat die hoofstraat van Balfour en alle besighede was ook in die straat. Die begraafplaas was een blok verder aan die weste kant van Stasiestraat geleë en die graf moes een van die eerstes wees van die mense wat daar begrawe is. In November 2016 het ek skielik meer
inligting gekry en weer na dié begraafplaas van Balfour gery en jou waarlik: Daar in die noord-westelike hoek kom ek op ‘n marmer grafsteen af wat middeldeur is en op die grond lê. Op die grafsteen is die bewoording: Benjamin Bloomfield Ingram * 02-08-1879 * 22-10-1908 “Killed by Lightning”. Daar het glo ‘n groot wilgerboom ‘n paar meter van die graf af gestaan. Nie lank nadat die grafsteen opgerig was nie, is die steen middeldeur deur ‘n weerligstraal geslaan. Mense van die omgewing het die grafsteen daarna weer reg gemaak, maar weereens is dit deur weerlig getref. Verskeie kere daarna is die grafsteen herstel, maar net om weer deur die weerlig omgeslaan te word. Ongeveer 50 jaar gelede is die grafsteen weereens herstel, maar die weerlig dit weer getref. Nou het ek sy sterfkennis in sy boedelleêr in die argief gekry. Daarin word gemeld dat hy ongetroud was en op die plaas Tweefontein geboer het. Hy moes ook redelik groot met pluimvee geboer het, want dié is na sy dood vir die bedrag van £254-9-4 (R508-94), verkoop wat seker nou ‘n paar honderd duisend rand sou wees. CRIME PREVENTION HOW VULNERABLE IS YOUR HOME? To find out how safe or unsafe your home really is, walk around the outside of the building and take note of the following signs of poor security: Burglar-proofing that is not securely bolted to the walls. 1406 Autopsy reports not completed since 2016 Hundreds of court cases are delayed in Gauteng because 1406 reports have not been completed and typed up from autopsies done last year. This has been revealed by Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa in a written reply to questions in the Gauteng Legislature. According to Ramokgopa, 11034 autopsies were conducted in Gauteng state mortuaries last year, but only 9628 reports were completed and typed up. These means that reports from one in eight autopsies are outstanding. The missing reports are due to “outstanding results (Toxicology/Alcohol) from National Health Laboratories and shortage of admin staff.” Ramokgopa says that this “results in delays in court processes.” The DA are concerned that so many autopsy reports are delayed as their are critical evidence of unnatural death in
court proceedings. Pathologists in the mortuaries complain that there are not enough typists to assist them with the reports. Ramokgopa says that the department “is in the process of setting up an electronic management system which will assist in ensuring that court reports and photo-graphs are readily available.” This electronic system is needed, but it is a lack of typists that is delaying the reports, which is simple to f ix. Administrative support should be improved to ensure that the backlog of autopsy reports is eliminated.

Rensburg VLU gaan op ‘reis’ na Turkeye Lede van Rensburg VLU het op 26 Julie vir hul 463ste vergadering bymekaar gekom. Die vergadering is tot orde geroep en Inge van Zweel het die verrigtinge met skriflesing en gebed geopen. Na verwelkoming deur takvoorsitter Anja Jordaan is die vorige notule voorgelees en aanvaar. Anja het voortgegaan met die sakelys wat ondermeer die Kerswerkswinkel van 7 November, sowel as die konferensie in 2018 ingesluit het. Sy het lede vir hul teddiebeer bydrae bedank en gesê die 13 gebreide/gehekelde teddiebere word aan VLU Overvaal vir hul welwillendheids projek geskenk. Anja het ook herinner dat die maandvergaderings na ‘n nuwe tydgleuf, synde elke derde Dinsdag van die maand verskuif. Volgende op die sakelys was die afsluitingfunksies en bespreking van die tak se jaarlikse fondsinsameling wat ‘n Eenskottel-
gereg kompetisie op 19 September behels. Die kompetisie is oop vir publieke inskrywing en daar is groot pryse op die spel. Inskrywings beloop R50 elk en meer besonderhede oor die kompetisie sal binnekort in die plaaslike media bekend gemaak word. Bets Grobler was volgende aan die beurt en het ‘n interessante praatjie en uitstalling oor die Kunstenaar van die jaar Jacques Bessenger gelewer. Sy het die kunstenaar se lewe en werk illustratief uitgebeeld waarna sy die dames op ‘n ‘reis’ deur die strate van Turkeye geneem het. Sy het uitgelig dat die meeste Turkse inwoners oorheersend die Moslem geloof aanhang en dat hulle glad nie sterk alkohol gebruik nie. Elke dame het ook ‘n Turkse lekker ontvang. Die vergadering is afgesluit, waarna die dames gesellig om die teetafels gekuier het. Die volgende vergadering

Goue Suide spog met ‘n eerste plek onder die 5 streke met ‘n uitmuntende punte telling van 3653. Tweede is Goudrif streek met 3594 punte. Derde Jakaranda streek met 3583 punte. Vierde is Pretoria streek met 3399 punte en vyfde Witwatersrand streek met 3271.

Eskort celebrates 100 anniversary From its humble beginnings in 1917, Eskort Limited has over the past 100 years grown to become the leading South African manufacturer and marketer of processed pork products under the Eskort Brand. During mid 1917, a group of nine gathered at the Plough Hotel in Estcourt (KwaZuluNatal) to discuss the establishment of a Bacon curing factory in the area. By August 1917 the Farmer’s Co-operative Bacon Factory Limited was founded and building commenced on the banks of the Bushman’s River in Estcourt. The factory was officially opened on 6 June 1918 by General Louis Botha. Today, Eskort Butcheries are located at Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal, Heidelberg as well as at the Food Hub Silverton in Pretoria. The staff complement at the factories in Estcourt and Heidelberg now exceeds 1000 people. Throughout the years, Eskort has been actively involved in social projects in local communities and has given back where it
