First of 580 new SA-built commuter trains The new factory and training centre complex and corporate off ice of emerging South African commuter train manufacturer Gibela, at Dunnottar is nearly complete, just short of two years from the start of construction. Since 2 January 2018, the company’s current 400+ fulltime employees will be based at the complex at 2 Shosholoza Avenue, and work begin in earnest on the manufacture of the first of 580 six-car XTrapolis Mega commuter trains to be built over the next 10 years for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). At the forefront of the manufacturing process will be more than 200 South African engineers and technicians – most historically disadvantaged – who have been specially trained and orientated by Gibela and its majority shareholder,

Alstom, at the latter’s train-building centres of excellence around the world. During 2017, 50 skilled and semi-skilled artisans from Ekurhuleni were recruited for the manufacturing process. By the end of the first quarter of 2018, the first train’s car body shell essentially, its metal panel-clad metal frame – is expected to be completed. By the end of 2018, the first South Africanbuilt train should be ready for delivery to PRASA. At peak production – planned for the end of 2019 – more than 1 000 employees are expected to be turning out an average of seven and a half cars a week and five trains a month – an average of 62 trains a year. Eighteen of 20 trains built at Alstom’s Lapa, Brazil factory – using South African materials and involving South Africans –

have been in commercial service for the best part of 2017 and are estimated to have already clocked up, in total, more than half a million kilometres. One of the two trains built in Brazil – used initially for testing purposes – will now be based at Gibela’s bespoke training centre at Dunnottar, where they will be instrumental in the training of some 19 500 artisans and technicians for Gibela and for the rejuvenated South African rail sector as a whole over the next 10 years. Of 65 apprentices selected during 2017, most have already begun their training at the Gibela training centre. To meet its local content commitment of at least 65% of contract value, Gibela has on-boarded 54 South suppliers to supply materials, parts and services. More than 4 700 South African jobs are

being supported by the company’s activities. Gibela is also forging ahead with arrangements to deliver on its 19-year agreement with PRASA to provide technical support and the supply of parts to PRASA for the new trains, as they enter commercial service.

Crisis nurse training Jack Bloom MPL, DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC said that he is greatly concerned about the fact that 700 nursing candidates will not be able to study for the four-year nursing diploma at three Gauteng nursing colleges because the Gauteng Health Department cannot afford to fund their studies. This is despite the fact that they were informed that they qualified for the course but in December last year were told not to report to the colleges “until further notice”. According to Department spokesperson Lesemang Matuka, the Department cannot afford the R57 million that is required to fund first year students, so the colleges will only admit first-year students with external bursaries or those who can afford to pay the fees themselves. The three affected institutions are the Ann Latsky, Chris Hani Baragwanath and SG Lourens nursing colleges. This is a cruel blow to poor students who passed the selection process but are now left out in the cold with no other study options for this year. The underfunding of nursing training is most unwise as the department are short of trained nurses for our health system. According to the 2016/17 Gauteng Health Annual Report, the current nursing vacancies are as follows: Professional Nurses - 982. Student Professional Nurses - 536. Staff Nurses – 405. The Department should urgently reconsider the cancellation of training for firstyear nurses which is a priority that should not be sacrif iced because of poor budgeting.

About Gibela Gibela was formed as a consortium to replace South Africa’s outdated rolling stock and will deliver 600 state-of-the art passenger trains into the South African rail network over the next 10 years. Fully empowered, Gibela is conscious of its role as a catalyst for economic development and the creation of new skills through its majority shareholder, Alstom. In a contract signed in 2013, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) assigned Gibela the task of replacing its rolling stock with new trains. Gibela is headquartered in Johannesburg, while its manufacturing and training facility is located in Dunnottar, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. Through the rolling stock project, Gibela will generate 1 500 direct

jobs and thousands of indirect jobs through the supply chain over a 10-year period. Thousands of people – engineers, artisans, technicians, train drivers and technologists – will benefit from training and upskilling. GIBELA 2017. All rights reserved. A new season… From the desk of Rev Ray Goddess 2018 is here and 2017 is past…but our memories of 2017 and before still stay with us. as we think of the year ahead I know that many of us are looking forward to 2018 with all its challenges but I also know that there are many of us who have a fear of what 2018 is going to bring. At the end of the day as a Christ Follower we need to remain focused on Jesus and try our best to live 2018 in line with what He wants us to do. With that in mind this article comes to you as the last article that I will be writing from the desk of Heidelberg Methodist Church. I have moved on to Nigel Methodist Church and my wife Elize has taken over at Heidelberg Methodist Church. I know that the articles/messages that she will bring to you will be an inspiration to you all. I would like to take this time to say thank you to all who have read the articles that I have written. I know that I have sometimes created questions in your minds and I know that some of you may have even got a bit agitated with me. But let me be honest in saying that you all have been an inspiration to me and it has been a pleasure to have shared over 300 articles with you. My 12 years at HMC has been a blessing and I thank God for using me as He has. Elize and I started our journey in the Methodist church together and we were ordained at the same time in 2009.

Rev Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church A more gentle, caring person will be hard to find and I know that you are all going to be blessed with the messages that she shares with you each month. I obviously leave HMC with a sore heart, having formed friendships in Heidelberg that I will cherish for all my life. I know that as Elize forms friendships with the Heidelberg congregation and community that each and every one of you will be blessed. I look forward to the challenges I face as the shepherd of the Nigel Methodist Church and pray that my time there will be meaningful to the people and in line with what God has planned for the NMC community.

Afrikaans sal bly Tornado in Vaal Marina voortbestaan!

Employees from the Vaal and Nigel area collaborated for a worthwhile cause, by putting together food parcels and donating blankets and beverages for families in Mamello, who were severely affected by a tornado in December 2017. This devastating events rocked the Vaal Marina, community members in the township of Mamello. According to news reports, approximately 50 people were injured, 500 people have been left homeless but no fatalities have been conf irmed following this natural disaster. Bottling company Coca- Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) decided to help the community in the form of food parcels that comprised of non-perishable items, toiletries and also provided them with blankets and beverages that are produced by the company. Employees then set aside a day to

personally deliver the items that they had collected during the last few days. Priscilla Khumalo, a community member and a volunteer at the local feeding scheme, gave those in attendance insights into what had transpired on that fateful day. She relayed the huge impact that the tornado had on many of her relatives and neighbors, giving employees a better understanding of the needs of this community. “Many of us were already indoors when the disaster happened. It started with rain and then all of a sudden our homes were being ripped apart, many people were injured. Even though some homes were not severely affected, the people were emotionally affected. We are grateful that companies like Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa have kept us in their hearts, we thank them”, says Khumalo.

Walk in someone else’s shoes final collection drive Heidelberg Mall has over the years established itself within the local community as a collection zone for the “Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes” drive, where customers donated pairs of shoes at a special shoe collection box located in the Mall. “Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes” is a community initiative launched in early 2016 as a meaningful drive to collect shoes for those in need. This was the brain child of the Mall owners who prior to the Mall launch did a research to find out what the main needs of the local community were. Their answer was clear: “shoes will help the disadvantaged people in our community go a long way”.

To date thousands of pairs have been collected and handed over to various local non-prof it community organisations as well as to walk-in customers in need. The last shoe collection drive took place in December 2017, where hundreds of pairs were donated to Indawo Yosizo (meaning Centre for Help in isiZulu), a local non-profit community organisation whose main focus is to provide community based social work services to the community.

“We would like to humbly thank the Heidelberg community for their overwhelming contributions, thousands of people have benef ited from your generous donations over the years, your efforts have not gone unnoticed” said Clinton Janse van Rensburg, Heidelberg Mall General Manager. When sick is not really sick Defrauding medical aids is counterproductive – and against the law. To defraud your medical aid is to defraud yourself. What could be more senseless? Indeed, it is estimated that the economy loses a massive R55.2 billion annually to sick leave, according to Adcorp Holdings’ employment index. While the majority of this f igure may well be attributable to real sick leave, it does raise serious concerns around fraudulent claims in the medical field. It also holds a number of major disadvantages for scheme members, key among them the fact that fraud pushes medical aid fees higher and higher. At the end of the day, everyone is a loser. Medical aid schemes work out the benefits for each option offered and have these options priced by an actuary, every financial year. Should payment of benefits exceed these calculations, resulting in a loss for an option/scheme, this definitely impacts on the percentage increase of the membership fees for the next year. So, even if you are not guilty of any abuse,

you pay. In the eye of the medical fraud storm is Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA). The body is facing criticism from medical aid schemes who feel that the doctors involved have escaped with slaps on the wrist, which will not act as a deterrent to others contemplating the same crime. Alternative, and more suitable, strategies suggested by schemes include suspension from practise. They are not alone. The Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF), which represents medical aid schemes, also feels the council is “losing the war” on medical aid fraud. “Issuing a medical certificate to keep an employee away from work without need is fraud and both the doctor and the patient need to be held accountable. The current financial environment, where people lose their income and cannot cope with all expenses, definitely impacts on medical aid fraud. The consequences, however, can be dire – from disqualification from membership and refunding of benef its to criminal prosecution in cases of fraud exceeding R100 000.

Nuwe uitdaging Appelboom!

CRIME PREVENTION KEEP BURGLARS OUT (3) OTHER DETECTORS: There are other types of detectors which register vibrations, such as the sound of breaking glass or wood, or those activated by pressure. However, they can generally be regarded as additions to the central system which can be installed as and when necessary. Many systems work by remote control, and it is therefore not necessary to link each detector directly to the central control box. This makes it much easier to install detectors judiciously. There are also a number of do-it-yourself models on the market. Just be sure that you do not combine too many types of detectors, since this could lead to overprotection, which could result in the system becoming a burden because of the number of false alarms. The ideal system is one which provides adequate protection to the people in the building. It must not be a burden to the residents. Reliability and good after-sales service are obviously also essential. Nothing is more useless than an alarm system that doesn‘t work properly. The system should also detect the intruder before he enters the house. Some systems are only activated inside the house – therefore, only once the intruder is already inside. If this happens at night (and many such incidents occur while the residents are asleep), the alarm may wake you when the intruder is already standing beside your bed. The homeowner should carefully weigh up the choice of an alarm system to make sure that it meets his unique requirements. Organisations such as the South African Insurance Association will gladly provide expert information on alarm systems. If you are considering having an alarm installed, contact an established alarm company and have them design a system for you. It could involve a combination of various detector methods discussed above – but must be appropriate to your needs. Daar was betogers in Mpumalanga se Highveld Mall in eMalahleni en die i’langa Mall in Mbombela. H & M se jaarlikse omset in Suid-Afrika vir 2016/17 beloop ongeveer amper R1 miljard rand.

With the imminent release of the matric results of the Class of 2017, thousands of parents and learners who expect they may not have done as well as required are feeling anxious and uncertain about the future. While many of them will indeed have to come to terms with disappointing results, an education expert says it is important to know that there are a number of options that can get learners back on track. “The most important thing for both parents and learners having sleepless nights over their results, is to not panic,” says Fathima Razack, Head of Programme: Faculty of Commerce at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest private higher education provider. “While it might feel like the end of the world at the moment, clear heads and a pragmatic approach are required to make the right decisions for the future,” she says. It is particularly important for adults to manage their response, as their emotional state could impact on the resilience of learners in the wake of the release of results. “Although parents and guardians may feel deeply disappointed, they should know that their first words and reactions may leave a lasting impact. “They should take stock and consider their unified position so that the energy can be focused on the learner and their next steps,” says Razack. The options open to learners who failed, but who are determined to still earn their National Senior Certificate, include: Sitting for the supplementary examinations. Sending papers for either a re-mark or recheck. Returning to school and re-registering for matric. Registering at another school to complete matric. Completing matric via distance learning. Those learners who passed, but didn’t achieve the marks required for entrance into degree study, have the following options: Sending papers for either a re-mark or recheck. Enrolling for a Higher Certificate at a higher education institution, which can give access to degree study. Enrolling for a Diploma which can give access to degree study. “It is also important to remember that while your marks may not have been good enough to get access to your first choice of course or institution, that doesn’t mean you have no other study options left. Quite the opposite in fact, so parents and prospective students should ensure that they have really investigated the offerings at both public universities and private higher education institutions. Other institutions may have made provision for students who require more support, and will therefore have more accommodating admission requirements. “That means it may not be necessary to repeat Grade 12 or rewrite a subject, as there could be alternatives available in your chosen field of study,” says Razack. The most important thing to remember is that below par matric results don’t have to mean giving up on one’s dreams and aspirations, she says.
