Navorsing in misdaadvoorkoming by besigheidskomplekse is ondersoek.

GEHOORSENTRUM

Top of the agenda is the call for Provincial Government to invest in education and do more to equip young people for the workplace with the skills they need now and in the future. There was a loud call for government to invest more in renovating industrial parks and regulating illegal businesses. Many asked that more be invested in employing doctors and nurses in hospitals and clinics so that the quality of service improves, and health practitioners treat patients with dignity and care. Some of our residents asked that more be spent on improving road infrastructure, repairing potholes and building our public transport system. Others complained about environmental conditions in the province and demanded more be done about littering and illegal dumping. Accordig to Gauteng MEC for Finance, Barbara Creecy the 2019 Budget is indeed a Gauteng People’s Budget. Over the past five years, Gauteng has attracted R199 billion in foreign direct investment and created 469 000 net jobs. In the course of the coming year, R40 billion will be invested by the private sector in new and expanded industrial developments across the province. Our provincial population has increased to 14.7 million (Statistics South Africa: Mid-Year Estimates, 2018). Our public health system serves 20 million healthcare users per annum and our education system now has 2.3 million learners. The Department has earmarked funds towards the following programme: R26 million for the upgrading of township hubs/ industrial parks, R18.2 million to implement the Ekasi Lab programme. R5 million for the Pitching Booster that provides financial and nonfinancial support to township enterprises. R 75 million for the Conhill Visitors Centre, R40 million for the BioPark Phase 3B infrastructure project at The Innovation Hub, R40 million for the Superblock structure at the OR Tambo

Restor e la w and or der on our rroa oa ds Restore law order oads The City of Johannesburg is wrapping up a competitive bidding process to appoint a new private partner to enhance traffic management service. An announcement will be made once a new partner is appointed. In the meantime, Outsurance Pointsmen services remain in place for the next three months. According to Sun, the Department for Public Safety receives complaints of bad driving and blatant disregard of traffic laws and rules on a daily basis. He referred to social media where drivers express their anger

and frustration, often aimed specifically at the driving behaviour of mini bus taxi drivers. This announcement comes on the backdrop of ongoing efforts to restore law and order in the City, where the City has systematically and continuously been enforcing traffic management and By-law enforcement with Operation Buya Mthetho. “In order to ensure road safety and smooth traffic flow, it is important that we not only enforce the laws but also promote safety awareness and encourage public

co-operation in changing driver behaviour. We hope that through the Public Private Partnership to be implemented, we are able to improve traffic management service and minimise traffic congestion,” said MMC Sun. With the closure of the M2 highway for repairs starting on 28 February 2019, JMPD will deploy additional pointsmen to manage traffic and also increase police patrols and visibility to clamp down on any opportunist crimes such as smash-andgrabs during peak hour traffic.

Fuel hike Motorists now pays 74 cents more for a litre of petrol and the cost of diesel increased by 93 cents per litre. With major fuel price hikes motorists have been warned of more increases next month. This is thanks to tax hikes that come into effect. Finance Minister Tito Mboweni announced last month that fuel levies would increase by 29 cents a litre in the case of petrol and 30 cents a litre for diesel. The hikes will, however, be implemented in stages, with the first 20 cents coming into effect from the beginning of next month. The remaining 9 cents a litre for petrol and 10 cents for diesel will only come into effect in June as a carbon tax. The Energy Department says oil prices and the rand were collectively responsible for the latest increases. There are now concerns that the price of Brent crude will continue to climb with major oil producing country's cutting production.

CRIME PREVENTION SAFETY ON THE STREET

VISITING THE BANK Never carry large amounts of money on you. Split up the cash and hide it in different places on your person. Try not to have to go to the bank alone. If you have to go to the bank regularly, don‘t follow a fixed route or go at a set time. Keeping cash or valuables in your car is not safe. WATCH YOUR BAG A handbag is a favourite target. Rather carry credit cards, etc. on your person. Never leave your bag on the counter while you are shopping. Hold your handbag securely in one hand, or carry it with the strap over your shoulder. Older women should not carry their bags over their shoulder, since they could be knocked off balance if someone tries to grab it. Always be careful in a crowd, since criminals could cut your bag open with a sharp object and get away with the contents. Keep your bag on the floor when travelling by car. Keep the doors locked and don‘t open the window more than a third. IN TOWN Mistrust anyone asking for directions or the time. They might be distracting you so that an accomplice can grab your bag. Be especially careful in parking areas, the lobbies of buildings, on staircases, etc. because these are favourite places for robbers to strike. Move away if someone gets too close when you are waiting to cross the road, entering a building or waiting for a lift or in a queue. If you are window-shopping, move away if a suspicious person gets too close. Watch the glass to see if someone is trying to sneak up on you. Be careful of being followed. If this happens, go into the nearest shop for help. AUTOMATIC TELLER MACHINES (ATM) Be on the lookout for suspicious persons. If necessary, rather use another ATM or come back later. Report stolen or lost cards. They can be seriously abused in the hands of the wrong person. Don‘t write your PIN on the card. If you have to write it down, keep it in a separate place.
