Marievale, saga still going strong!
Marievale was originally a mining area with a surface right permit developed in terms of the Mines and Work Act of South Africa originally passed in 1911 and amended in 1912, 1926 and undergone further changes in 1956 and 1959 till date. In terms of these relevant acts houses and related social infrastructure was developed and can still be developed. The advancement of the ANC led South African Revolution from the Bhambatha Rebellion forth wards, led to the 1975/76 June uprising. The South African Army Engineer Corps 1 Construction Regiment utilised Marievale as a support unit to the SA Army and after the shutting down of Dunnottar Air force Base, 1 Construction Regiment took over the Air force Base. The South African Police and SADF commando units occupied Marievale in order to launch operations to suppress uprisings against the then oppressed Alra Park, Duduza, Kwathema, Tsakane, Wattville and Daveyton revolutionary organisations. This also included protecting whites crop farmers in the area against uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and Azania Peoples Liberation Army (APLA) as social reformers and guerrilla operators. In 1996, two years after the first democratic elections in South Africa Marievale Group 16 was shut down and abandoned by the SA Army. Various factors influenced the suspension and shutting down of mines including the latest Aurora and Pamodzi Gold issue. All these factors which include nature conservation, shutting down of Marievale as a military base, poverty, destituteness and unemployment saw Marievale experiencing vandalism which included electricity and cable theft. This is how houses in Marievale which were previously meant for whites only, in the midst of many African South Africans only occupying domestic quarters, houses and shacks at Happiness Valley received attention and were put into good use by all who were homeless and in need of land and places they can call home. This included a few soldiers who worked at Dunnottar military base. In essence the community of Marievale is comprised of citizen’s who have been staying in Marievale working domestic workers, abandoned and destitute mine workers,
farm workers, soldiers who neither qualify for bank guaranteed bonds nor RDP houses. These are a people who have been in this place for more than twenty years with others having been in Marievale for over thirty years. Children who were born and grew up in this area whose parents left them in the very houses in which they were born forms part of this community. Most of the children if not all who were born here in Marievale, now have their own children including also our African brothers and sisters from various other countries like Mozambique, Zimbabwe, DRC, Zambia, Lesotho with their children who worked in the Marievale Aurora/ Pamodzi gold mine and were left destitute with the closing down of the mine. This community has always been here from generation to generation amidst all administrative actions and injustices imposed over their heads with no to protection. On the morning of November 25, 2015 at 7:15 the Dunnottor Military Base, Nigel, without any prior warning to the local residents, decided to LOCK-DOWN, the Marievale residential area, preventing resident’s freedom of movement. Confirmed rumours had it that the Military is at an advance stage to “illegally” evict residents that have been living on the Plot for many, many years on end. The purpose is allegedly to prepare the living units for soldiers, because it is alleged the property belongs to the Military. Please intervene and investigate the latter, and revert back, because if it’s true that the Military, gets involve in Human Settlement and Housing issues, then the safety of the country is under threat. Local residents at Marievale have written proof that if there is any move that needs to be done on the Marievale Plot, the Department of Public Works is the first point of entry, which needs to be entered in to. Hence the Public Workers needs to handover Marievale to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), so that the residents could provide with ownership of the houses followed with title deeds. There were also confirmed rumours that a local Coal Mine, called: Ilangabe Coal Mining is working in cahoots with the Dunnottar Military Base to evict Marievale residents, so that the Mine must spread its
Man dood na piksteel aanval ‘n 46-jarige boer is dood nadat hy verlede week met ‘n piksteel op sy plaas by Witkop buite Nigel aangeval is. Kapt.
wings to start coal mining in the immediate area and vicinity. Rumours were spreading further that the envisaged imminent eviction of the Marievale residents, is to make way for tens, hundreds and thousands of workers that will be recruited from all over the country and the world for the PRASA Manufacturing Plant, worth R51billion, that will have a lifespan of ten (10) years and above, were a further R115billlion will be invested by PRASA, working together with their BEEBBBEE, partners, called: Gibela Rail SA. The Marievale Committee, therefore demand: The immediate removal of the trenches which were created by the Military Excavators which have closed off non-secure entrances to the residential
area and Community. These trenches were an imminent danger for the children of the residents, because they swim in them. That arrogant and confrontational serving soldiers in full uniform stop with immediate effect to bully, threaten and make uncalled-for remarks against the Marievale community. That Dunnottar Military soldiers stop vandalizing and stripping the area to the ground, by removing corrugated roof irons, which is a direct contradiction of what we were told that the area, needs to be cleared (evictions) aimed at refurbishing and renovating it. Up to date they still f ighting for the protection of families from discrimination, unlawful eviction and harassment.
