Waiting times for cancer treatment at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital have worsened over the last year, particularly for 400 prostate cancer patients who will wait as long as three years for treatment. This information is revealed by Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku. Hodgkin’s, bladder, rectum/anus, and head and neck cancers will take about 6 weeks
to be treated, gynecological cancer from three to four months, and prostate cancer between 10 months and three years. The four Linear accelerator machines have all broken down at least once since January last year, one of the two Cobalt machines has been broken for three years and one of the two Simulators has not been working for two years. There have also been shortages of 12 chemotherapy medicines, as well as morphine. The big concern is that 17 out of 67 posts in the Oncology department
are vacant - 2 consultants, 5 registrars and 10 radiation therapists are needed. According to Masuku, the machine breakdowns, medicine shortages and staff vacancies have led to delays in treatment. Last year, the hospital’s CEO Gladys Bogoshi said that there were 300 prostate cancer patients who would wait two years for treatment, now it’s 400 prostate patients
waiting for three years. These delays cause much distress to patients and decreases their survival chances. The good news is that two new Linear Accelerator machines will be bought in November, but more needs to be done in appointing qualified staff and working extra hours to make up the huge backlog.

Jordan is trots op sy Engelse liedjies, maar is tans besig met Afrikaanse liedjies. “Ek wil graag eendag as dit moontlik is deur die hele wêreld toer met my kitaar en musiek. My belangrikste fokus met my
musiek is om mense aan te moedig dat as 'n gestremde ou op die verhoog kan kom en sy passie voor duisende mense kan deel, wat is elke gestremde se verskoning om nie ook hul droom te leef nie. Jordan is gebore met 'n gebrek genaamd Osteogenesis imperfecta (bros bene). Dit het hom nie verhinder om sy drome na te streef nie. Did your pastor tell you that you must lose your life in order to save it. Jesus did. Your pastor might have told you God wants you to be wealthy and to enjoy your best life now but what did Jesus great wealth say? “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26) Jesus warned us of seeking wealth and the things of this world. He said, “How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!” (Matthew 10:23) He said, “Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consists not in the
abundance of the things which he possesses.” (Luke 12:15) Will that man’s possessions save him on the Day of Judgment? Be careful of whose words you heed. Default Jesus. Did your pastor prepare you for persecution? Jesus did. “The servant is not greater than his lord. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” (John 15:20) Man can study and debate Paul’s letters but who can debate Jesus’ own words. Many made excuses when Jesus spoke to them but a man’s excuse will only excuse him. When we have been excused from heaven itself and God’s very presence, where will that leave us? There is only one alternative to heaven and that is the very fires of Hell. If we choose to live our best life now, then we will have demonstrated whose words we believed and esteemed. Jesus bread of life said, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:63) He said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) Bread alone will not sustain us but every word that proceeds from his mouth. When many disciples walked away from Jesus when they didn’t like what he had to say, Peter knew there was no one who knew the way, as Peter declared, “Only you have the words of eternal life”. (John 6:68) Read the Red letters of the Bible! Maybe it’s time to reset our path to eternal life by going back to the Manufacturer settings. Gaut eng h ealt h w orsens Gauteng healt ealth worsens in ffirst irst quar quartter Waiting times for hospital patients, tuberculosis treatment, medicine availability and the fatality rate for diarrhoea and malnutrition have deteriorated in the first quarter of the Gauteng Health Department’s 2019/20 budget from April to June this year. This is revealed in the Department’s First Quarterly Report which was tabled last week by the Health Committee. According to the report, only 4 out of 12 district hospitals achieved the 3 hour benchmark waiting time in the outpatients department, down from 11 out of 12 hospitals in the previous year. While all three tertiary hospitals (Helen Joseph, Tembisa and Kalafong) met the 4 hour benchmark waiting time last year, only one of these hospitals achieved this in the first quarter. The TB treatment success rate went down from 84% last year to 74%, while TB
patients lost to follow-up went up from 6.3% to 9.7% and the TB death rate rose from 6.3% to 6.4%, whereas the target is to keep the death rate below 5%. A shocking statistic is that the number of children dying from acute malnutrition increased from 6.8% to 9% - this includes 7 child deaths in April and 19 deaths in May. The diarrhoea fatality rate also went up, from 2.1% to 2.6%. Essential and vital medicine availability, which should be 100%, dropped from 96.3% to 96%. Poor spending patterns continue - the Administration programme overspent by R132 million because of medical negligence payouts, while Emergency Services failed to spend R46.5 million and hospitals underspent a whopping total of R1.257 billion. Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku faces a huge challenge to bring improvements after this disappointing start to the financial year.

He also recommended that the proposed move be driven by his office and an elected Committee from within the Community. Food banks suffers!
The Gauteng Department of Social Development has once again underspent on its budget. This was revealed in the department’s first quarter report for the 2019/2020 financial year. According to the report the department underspent by nearly R200 million, yet they are unable to fund Gauteng food banks. Food banks play a critical role in alleviating poverty in our underprivileged townships.
This has prompted GP2 Power Foods to take the department to court after the department stopped all payments to service providers in 2018. GP2 Power Foods was contracted by the department as part of the group of Food Bank Service providers. The court has now ordered the attachment of the department’s assets to the value of R236 million. The R200 million that was not spent by the
department could have been used to pay the contracted service providers but instead the department will now have their assets attached. This is going to cost the department more money, including the payment of legal fees. Some Food Banks last distributed food parcels in February and March, which means that some residents who are solely dependent on this programme go to bed hungry.

This department constantly underspends on its budget and fails to meets its set targets. Furthermore, the department has no set targets as to how many food parcels need to be distributed per year. The question remains what measurements the department is putting in place to ensure that their allocated budget is spent and by when payments to food banks will resume.

Star athlete hopeful South Africa’s 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk has picked up a knee injury in his comeback, placing him in doubt of being able to compete at the Doha World Championships from September 28 to October 6. He had MRI scans which showed the ligaments and meniscus in his (right) knee were fine, but unfortunately he picked up a bone bruise which has set him back five or six weeks. Van Niekerk, who successfully defended his 400m title and earned 200m silver at the IAAF World Championships in London two years ago,
remains hopeful of targeting a third successive one-lap crown in Doha later this season. He has already qualified for the showpiece, receiving a wild card entry as the defending 400m champion.
