Stage 4 Rolling Blackouts: The writing is on the wall for Eskom Eskom is implementing stage 4 loadshedding due to the fact that there has been no proper maintenance over the past ten years. says COO Jan Oberholzer. Despite the dire warnings, the writing on the wall, the increased tariffs, the failed interventions, all plans have failed. South Africans in all walks of life are car rying this burden. Businesses are buckling because of this.

Moenie jou pin gee nie dis ‘n nuwe slenter.

Our key public enterprises are clearly unable to deliver public goods. Despite 55 days of coal stock levels, the entity is unable to plan for adverse weather. This follows hard on the national airline being placed in business rescue, and is clearly indicative of the government’s inability to manage the infrastructure it inherited. This heralds a signal failure that will critically affect citizens, industry and the economy. Oberholzer says he doesn’t want to “get into the reasons” why we haven’t addressed the causes and solutions available to deal with this failure. Parlement believes it’s high time the culture at Eskom of command and control ends. Open cards are required and the

country needs to be taken into their confidence. This a time when factories are working overtime to meet production deadlines and families are relying on certainty over the coming festive season.

Make no mistake stage 4 loadshedding will have catastrophic consequences. Eskom and its shareholder needs to account to South Africa, and for once, stem the tide that may well drive us into recession again.

Buckle-up to stay alive Festive season is here, and many families will be travelling distances to different areas across the country to be with their loved ones while others will be visiting places of interests for this upcoming holiday season. City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), would like to share safety driving practices to the motorists to lessen the statistics of fatal crashes happening on our roads. It has come to the services ‘attention while attending vehicle crashes on the roads that many fatalities are as a result of drivers and passengers not buckling-up while travelling. Most vulnerability is that of children not placed in their rightful and correct restraining travelling seats specially made for their tiny bodies. It is a common practice that motorists still travel with children placed in the front seats without safety devices. Some other motorists still drive vehicles with children placed in between the steering and themselves as drivers while driving. Children are still allowed to stand in between the two front seats without safety precautions taken into deep consideration. What does the law and safety practices say regarding the vehicle safety? Legislation stipulates that everyone in a motor vehicle should wear a seat belt while the vehicle is in motion. It is the driver‘s responsibility and legal obligation to ensure that children are buckled up in a vehicle child restrain safety seat or seat belt where available. It is not safe to carry your baby or child in your arms while the vehicle is in motion. Children placed on the lap in the car, are highly exposed to intense injuries or even death even if the vehicle is travelling at the speed of about 60 km/h and that vehicle comes to sudden stopping or involved in a crash. In some instances, babies and children are ejected from the vehicle through the wind-screen or windows of the vehicle. Unrestricted children are prone to crash against the interior of the vehicle when it comes to sudden stop and can be fatal. Never buckle two children in one seat belt. It is a dangerous practice and could lead to serious injuries.Travelling unrestricted in vehicles such as bakkies and station wagons is as dangerous also. Emergency services off icials are rolling-out Buckle-up campaign around the City‘s business Malls, Toll Gates on the N17 freeway, filling stations around Albertina Sisulu and N3 freeways respectively and inclusive to different Major Taxi Ranks across the city. The campaign started of the December 4 and will run throughout till mid-January 2020. Emergency services pleads with motorist to be cooperative because as this is for everyone‘s safety concern. Changes in routine, may compromise your immunity over the holidays The countdown to the end-of-year summer break has begun, but it’s also the season when many of us fall prey to tummy bugs, unexpected colds, migraines and other nasties which can spoil the holiday fun. Alisha Mackintosh, Allergy and Immunity Portfolio Manager at Pharma Dynamics says it’s likely that certain changes in our routine may be to blame. “During the holidays we travel more, eat out-, shop- and party more. We stay up late and are perhaps a little more relaxed about hygiene, which can weaken our immune system and make us more susceptible to viruses and bacteria.” Understanding why we get sick, will help us to avoid the common triggers over the holidays. Macintosh says we should be wary of: Eating too much sugar. It’s the time of year when many give in to festive season temptations that are often laden with sugar

without realising that this weakens white blood cells. If you’re consuming sweet things throughout the day it means that your immune system may continuously be operating at a distinct disadvantage. Drinking too much alcohol. The holidays are synonymous with parties and alcohol, but too much booze can inhibit the body’s ability to fight infection, so rather drink in moderation. Staying up late. Partying or catching up on Netflix till the wee hours of the night and getting up later in the mornings can trigger migraines. Sticking to healthy sleep habits and getting eight hours of sleep can reduce the frequency of headaches by 29% and the intensity by 40%. Holiday shopping. When on holiday, we tend to shop more, which means we’re handling and drawing cash more than usual. Money carry about 3 000 different types of bacteria that can lead to all sorts of illnesses. Always wipe shopping trolleys

and surfaces with sanitising wipes before touching it or wash your hands afterwards. Traveling by plane. Some studies have found that flying heightens our risk of catching a cold by 80%. Consider boosting your immunity before a plane flight by getting enough rest, eating healthily and managing stress. Look out for supplements that contain vitamin C, zinc and Echinacea, such as Efferflu C to keep the common cold at bay. Dirty air conditioners. If it hasn’t been cleaned regularly, it could be harbouring harmful bacteria that can affect those with compromised immune systems. It’s recommended that air conditioning systems get debugged at least every two years. Too many holiday demands. Securing the house before going away on holiday, hosting and accommodating family, getting all the shopping done etc could all increase your stress load, which doesn’t do

your immune system any good. Crowds. Holidays mean more crowds no matter where you go and airborne germs thrive in crowded environments, which heightens one’s risk of getting sick. “Other common illnesses that holidaymakers often pick up include fever, diarrhoea, respiratory infections, giardiasis (infection of the small intestine), skin or soft tissue infections. Proper hygiene practices are of paramount importance and never consume food or water from places where the risk of contamination is high.” “Apart from plasters and Burnshield, your holiday first-aid kit should always include sunscreen, mosquito repellent, antibacterial cream, antihistamines, eye drops, pain medication and medicine to help with stomach cramps and nausea, as these ailments are likely to surface during the holidays,” she advises.

New Development Bank warns against scams The New Development Bank (NDB) is warning about an e-mail scam in which criminals, posing as bank employees, are trying to defraud the public. The New Development Bank f inances infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging economies and developing countries. It is not a commercial bank and does not open accounts for individuals, provide them with loans or any form of financing. Nor does it ask for payments or any other favours from potential recipients of funding. “The New Development Bank does not send unsolicited e-mails or any other communication asking people to open a personal bank account, transfer money, or provide personal information,” says Mr Monale Ratsoma, NDB Director General, Africa Regional Centre (ARC). “Any such communication is fraudulent. Do not respond and report it immediately to the South African Police Services.” Scams should also be reported to the South African Fraud Prevention Services helpline on 011 867 2234 or at www.safps.org.za According to The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC), fraudulent activity tends to increase over the festive season when year-end bonuses are paid and when consumers may not be as vigilant as usual. A typical ploy is to send an e-mail or other communication that appears to come from a bank or other trustworthy source requesting personal information such as identity documents, driver’s licences, passports, payslips, addresses and contact details. Fraudsters then use this information to open bank or retail accounts or take out loans for which the victim is accountable. They can even try to impersonate people, and using social engineering, access bank accounts and do transactions. Another version of the scam is to offer a very attractive loan or other financing at

low interest rates. The recipient of the email or message is then asked to pay an administration or other upfront free in order to qualify. The offer is often for a limited period to try and pressure people into responding. The following advice is offered to consumers to protect themselves: Be very wary about responding to unsolicited messages. Remember that scammers use a variety of channels including e-mail, mail, phone and social media. Verify all requests for personal information and only provide it when there is a legitimate reason to do so. ·Be suspicious of e-mails or messages that contain spelling or grammatical errors or other inconsistencies such as Gmail addresses, rather than a company domain e-mail. Be wary of requests for upfront payments or payment for goods or services you haven’t or don’t remember ordering, especially if you’re asked to use an unusual payment method such as MoneyGram.
