Choose Our Professional Sport Neuromuscular Service Though originally designed to help athletes perform at optimum levels during games, neuromuscular therapy is growing in popularity as an effective treatment for sports-related injuries or limited range of motion. Sports therapies focus on a patient’s trouble spots, like shoulder soreness after pitches, throwing a football; or a tender hamstring just before a big race. The certified Chiropractic Therapy Assistants at Willing Family Chiropractic understand sports-related injuries and can help minimize pain, speed recovery and help patients perform their best at their favorite activities with a full range of motion. There are four variations of sports therapies and choosing the right one is based on the patient’s current level of discomfort and upcoming athletic events. • Pre-event sports therapy involves a vigorous and stimulating therapy that targets the muscles that will be used during the upcoming event, boosting circulation and revving up energy levels with brisk neuromuscular techniques. • Post-event sports therapy is designed to help the athlete wind down after intense physical exertion, targets muscle soreness and helps to normalize body tissues and prevent muscle stiffness the next day. • Restorative sports therapy is provided during training to keep an athlete at peak performance level. Muscles are kept warm and supple, enabling more intense exertion during training time and minimizing the risk of injury. • Rehabilitative sports therapy is aimed at treating sports injuries and speeding up recovery time. Targeted at a specific trouble spot, rehabilitative sports therapy helps increase circulation and protect range of motion.

For anyone participating in regular physical activity, sports therapy every week or two may be a great addition to your normal regimen. You’ll be happy to know that Dr. Willing performs an exam and takes x-rays on every new patient! There aren’t any predetermined care plans with a set amount of visits that you may or may not need. Your treatment is individualized according to your needs.

DO YOU WANT THE WINNING EDGE?

I

would like to personally welcome you to Willing Having Family Chiropractic. been a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine since 1991, I have treated a wide range of injuries in many different lifestyles. From the average person wanting to be healthier and feel better, the avid sports enthusiast, athletes in training for competition and that is right you guessed it, “The golfer”.

I have treated many golfers over the years and one of the things I have come to realize is that it does not matter if you golf for fun or professionally, eventually you will have issues caused by repetitive movement. Over the years, I have seen much improvement with “Mirror Imaging” the ranges of motion to improve aberrant loss in range of motion caused by this musculoskeletal disorder. For example, if you watch a professional tennis player, they are over developed on their dominant shoulder and arm, and this issue must be addressed for them to keep in correct form. I treat two types of injuries most often with golfers. 1. The low back to include hip and knee. 2. Shoulder complications. I have been able to fine tune the treatment of these issues over the years. Chiropractic care has proven to be one of the top noninvasive non-surgical means of healing your body from the spine out. Having participated in Manipulation under Anesthesia for over 10 years, has given me an advantage over a lot of other practices. Another advantage I have are my massage therapists. They THE BACK NINE OF CHATTANOOGA ♦ ADVERTISING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD ♦ 04

are Chiropractic Therapy Assistants and have training and knowledge to assist in the treatment you will need. They are certified by the State and have done a clinical internship of 1200 hours under my supervision and guidance. I also give nutritional guidance at no additional cost for those that need it, for those suffering from severe nutrition deficiency, I will refer you to a specialist that I have worked with for many years.

When you come to see me at my practice, you will be given a full exam to include an orthopedic, neurological, and physical evaluation. X rays will be taken unless you have a recent one or a copy of an MRI within the last six months. I do not treat any patient without being able to see any underlying issues, injuries, or the necessary electrodiagnostic studies to give each one of you the quality care you deserve. I look forward to helping you make your next “Hole in One”. Dr. Evan G. Willing, III • • • • •

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR GAME

re you an aspiring golfer A who doesn’t know where to start, or an intermediate golfer looking to improve your game? This article is written for golfers of all skill levels who want to know what techniques they can try to improve their shots and lower their scores. Read on to find out how.

In order to be good at golf, one of the basic things that you need to take care of is your grip. It is good to know how the ball will act in response to your grip. The tighter you hold the golf club, the more likely it is that the ball will go to the right. The looser the grip, the more likely that the ball will go to the left.

Add power to your swing by using your body, not your arms. Lean in to power your shot. Turn with the ball on the downswing. This lets you use the power of all of the muscles in your body to get a better shot, instead of being limited to just your arm muscles. Another helpful tip is to be sure that you are a positive role model on the course when it comes to sportsmanship. This will say a lot about your character and help to build up the relationship with whoever you are playing with. Never let competitiveness get in the way of friendship.

A helpful tip when it comes to golf is to make sure that you follow through with each shot that requires a full hit. This is helpful because you want to make the most out of your swing and stopping short may cause you to not hit the ball as far as intended.

If you want to get rid of a hook the first thing you should do is check your grip. If your grip is too strong, your right hand is rotated too far over your left hand, you should practice moving your hand to a more neutral position. This will open your club face at contact and should prevent the hook.

Additionally, always be sure to try to find the reason why things go wrong if you have a bad day or bad shot. It is common to blame outside factors for your shortcomings, but you will not become a better golfer unless you can narrow down how to improve.

We hope you enjoyed this article about improving your golfing game. Hopefully, no matter what your skill level, you’ve learned something here that can improve your game and your overall skill as a golfer. Apply these tips in your practice, play to see your scores drop and come out ahead of your opponents.

GOLF INSTRUCTIONS 101

olf is not just about hitting a ball G with the end of a stick. It is much more than that. Though professionals

have always made golf seem like a relatively easy sport, it is in reality one of the hardest sports to play. It is all about hitting the ball correctly with the proper golf club. It is about controlling the swings to control the flight of the ball. Golf is more than what meets the eye. It is for this reason that golf instruction is quite needed for beginners and with this being said, here are a few tips that make up the basic golf instruction: 1. ADD MORE LOFT AT IMPACT TO MAKE THE BALL FLY FARTHER To understand this golf instruction, it is important to know what loft is. Loft is actually the degree of the clubface at the set up. When the drives hit off the upper half of the face, the result would be a higher dynamic loft. Hitting the upper half also makes the shot spin less. Following these principles, when a player hits the center or the upper half of the clubface, this would result in a higher degree in initial launch and with less spins. This would then make the ball fly further and higher. It will also land with a stronger forward roll. To be able to hit higher, it is suggested that the player tilt his shoulder during setup. The left shoulder should be lower than the right shoulder. This stance will make the player hit the ball on an increasing angle of attack.

This particular golf instruction would be perfectly executed when repeatedly practiced several times 2. FOCUS IS THE BEST PLAY Golf is not a lazy and distracted man’s sport. This golf instruction number two focuses on the being and concentration of the player. To make sure that all hits would give the desired effect, the person should have his full attention to his drive. Focus does not necessarily mean that a person should make tactics or create game plays. It only means that the player should be engaged in the game, relax when doing the swings, and think of the present. It would help when a golf player would imagine what his swings should result into and not what would happen after every strike. 3. BALANCE IS A PERSONAL PRACTICE FOR GOLF INSTRUCTION Though there is a standard stance that instructors teach beginners, there is also a certain stance that gives the player the most comfort and best balance. A player should therefore try a number of stances during initial set up and see which of these stance resulted in the best drives. A recommended routine is to try swinging with the legs together first, then swing with only the right foot on the ground. The next few swings would then be done with the left foot on the ground. Finally, when the person has fixed his balance, he should try swinging with his eyes close. This short routine helps a person with his balance.

HISTORY OF

THE LPGA

he LPGA, or Ladies Professional Tof women Golf Association, is an organization golfers known for its annual

Carner and Betsy King. King won six tournaments in 1989.

TOURNAMENTS & PRIZE MONEY The LPGA has come a long way from holding golf clinics to raise prize money. The first tour visited 14 cities and raised $50,000. Within two years the tour increased to 21 cities and the prize money to $200,000, with Judy Rankin becoming the first LPGA golfer to win $100,000 in a season in 1976. 1980 saw a total of $5 mllion awarded. This jumped to $14 million in 1989, more than $25 million in 1996, and by 2010, the tour covered 29 countries with total prize money in excess of $41 million.

Thirteen women joined together to form the LPGA in 1950. Initially, they traveled from city to city in their family cars with their golf clubs, waving colored paddles out the windows to communicate between cars when one needed to stop for gas or food. The players raised their own prize money by giving golf clinics before the tournaments and set up their own courses. By the 1960s, they graduated to traveling in campers and trailers. They received their first television coverage in 1963. In 1975, the LPGA moved from being player- CHARITABLE WORK run to hiring its own commissioner. SMART GUIDE TO ELECTRIC GOLF TROLLEYS

U

ndoubtedly, the demand for golf trolleys is on the rise -- especially the electric ones that work on batteries. However, the increasing variety of electric trolleys has made selection a bit challenging for the firsttime buyer. Here are some tips for choosing the most suitable electric trolley for the first time. LOOK FOR ENTRY LEVEL In case you are unaware, golf manufacturers offer entry-level golf trolleys ranging from 100 to 300 dollars. This is a good way to begin in case of a limited budget, although it is worth investing more in case a budget vehicle

does not offer the features you need. Cost is truly the first factor but good value may be more important. CHECK OUT FEATURES A few new or fancy features (such as a remote control) tend to excite beginners. The remote control feature is likely to save energy and time by eliminating the need to continuously pull or push it. Another interesting feature is a distance function that allows the trolley to move ahead. Although these features are very tempting, you should not lose your focus on what you need. For most new buyers, the weight, build quality and battery life are

THE BACK NINE OF CHATTANOOGA ♌ ADVERTISING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD ♌ 14

essential. It is certain that no new buyer would like to have their new remote control trolley lose battery by the 15th hole, or to see their budget trolley falling by the 12th hole. Therefore, you should always focus on the basic features first. However, you should not compromise other features for better quality. You need to ensure a long battery life, enough to cover the number of holes you usually like to play. Moreover, you should make sure the trolley is not too heavy and that it will last for a few years with good service. EXAMINE YOUR OPTIONS If you are purchasing from a street-side store, have a small discussion with the staff. Find out whether or not the disclosed weight includes the battery, check out features and warranty, and ask about the return policy as well. To know about the best trolley for your requirements, consider chatting with your fellow golfers at the 19th hole. If you are buying online, spend some time searching for discounted offers and customer reviews to ensure you are getting the best quality product for your needs.

IMPROVE YOUR SHORT GAME

I

n this article I will be discussing how to improve your short game all the way from your iron shot to putting on the green. These tips will ensure you play to the best of your ability out there on the course. IRON SHOTS The first step in producing a successful iron shot is knowing what club to choose. Each iron club is used pertaining to the distance the golfer is from the hole. Depending on each player, you must match your personal distance with each club with your distance from the hole. For example, I personally hit my 7 Iron around from 150-170 yards, so if I am within that range on the course, that is my club of choice. The next step in a successful iron shot is to line up your stance. The higher the number on the club, the more you want to place the ball even with the back half of your stance in order to provide loft to the shot. And vice versa for lower numbers; place the ball closer to the front of your stance. Since each club will provide you with a matched distance, you want to make sure you take a full swing no matter what club you have. Many beginner golfers make the mistake of shorting their swing if they are closer to the pin. However, if you have chosen the right club, there will be no need to do that. CHIPPING If you are not an exceptional golfer, chances are you have not yet reached the green on your second shot. Chances are that your second shot ended up in the rough near the putting green. If this is the case, chipping is probably your best option for your third shot. There are multiple clubs with wchich golfers choose to chip their balls. The most common type of club is a pitching wedge or 52 Degree Wedge. The 52 Degree Wedge provides a bit more loft to your shot, but both clubs are very similar. Depending of your distance from the green, a chip shot should be swung light and with proper follow-through. Many golfers use punch chip shots, which are sometimes effective, but are inconsistent at times. You truly want to swing through the ball and finish through to give your chip shot maximum loft. Chipping is a very delicate type of golf shot because it is all dependent on the golfers touch. You don’t want to swing too hard or to light, in the end your speed of the club is up to the golfers own perspective. Another type of chip shot commonly used in golf is the runner. The runner is a chip shot (usually used with the 8 Iron) where you have to bounce the ball far across the green. This club ensures that you won’t loft the ball that high, allowing the ball to run across the green toward the hole. This shot is for more experienced golfers, but can be very useful in certain situations out on the course. PUTTING Probably the most frustrating part of the game of golf, putting can turn your game around for better or worse. The first part of ensuring a good putter shot is to read your ball’s lie. This means read the greens angles and elevation to predict the path of the shot you are about to take. This is seen a lot when you watch pro golfers. They usually stand behind their ball to get a key for the shot. The next part of a great putter shot is the swing itself. Many beginner golfers bring their putter head back to far in their shot, causing them to lose the path that they lined up. The correct shot is to bring the head back slightly, then push your club through the ball in the path you want it to travel. ETIQUETTE FOR ROOKIES

ou have to be polite to play golf? Y Well... sort of. After all, golf is a gentlemen’s game. Of course, you are not expected to follow every single unwritten rule of the game, but here a few you should pinpoint on… NUMBER ONE If you hit an errant shot (and trust me, you will) please yell “FORE” to warn nearby players. The last thing you need is a potential lawsuit on your hands because you didn’t open your mouth. NUMBER TWO If you are playing ahead of a clearly more experienced and skilled group, please let them play through. You will save them a lot of frustration and yourself a lot of embarrassment if you happen to have a rough day. The rangers on the golf course also appreciate if you keep up with the “pace of play” as they call it and this is easily accomplished by letting the big hitters be on their way. NUMBER THREE This is an important one to follow and the rest of your friends will appreciate if you abide by it. NEVER, under any circumstance, walk through the line of your buddy’s putt on the green. They’re worried enough about accounting for the break, speed, and slope of the green. The last thing they need is to figure out how to hit over your big fat shoe mark in the middle of their line. These are just a few simple tips

to follow when on the course but their importance is unmatched. Earlier this month, I wrote an article explaining how out of the loop some new golfers are with the etiquette of the game and just how detrimental that is. No one can really fault you for having a poor day at the course if you are truly giving forth your best effort and just not getting results. However, if you are being arrogant or violating the unwritten rules of golf over and over, you may get a well-justified earful after the round has concluded. And rightfully so. Another huge and crucial mistake most amateurs make is neglecting the mental aspects of the game. I’m not arguing against the fact that technique and fundamentals go a long way, rather pointing out that your performance can be heavily influenced by your attitude. If you are someone who has a quick temper, you need to address that immediately and leave the pouting at home. Getting down on yourself NEVER helps in the sport of golf. You will begin to cloud your head with negative thoughts to the point where you can hardly make contact with the ball anymore. Keeping a positive attitude before, during, and after the round is half the battle and you will notice results immediately. Golf is a game that takes quite some time to finally “master” so a good attitude will only speed up this process. As with any sport, one mistake can often snowball into many more if complemented by a negative attitude. Keep that in mind next time you pick up (or want to throw) a golf club.

TOP NUTRITION & PERFORMANCE

A

re you looking to take your performance to the next level, but just can’t find that magic formula to get there? Nutrition is often an overlooked portion of training that many do not know how to tackle properly. Everywhere you turn, someone is telling you to cut out carbohydrates, or increase fat, or add salt to your drink, or stop eating eggs, or only eat 4 hours a day, or limit to 1000 calories… the list goes on and on. This misinformation sure does make it hard for consumers to know what the science says about nutrition, performance, and weight management. Take these basics tips to get you started on the right path: 1. Make half of your plate non-starchy vegetables at every meal. Shop seasonal for the best flavor and nutritional profile! Just because you did not like them yesterday does not mean you will not like them cooked or prepared a different way. Be adventurous! 2. Include whole grains on ¼ of your plate. Think outside the box – try farro (my personal favorite seasoned with salt/pepper, lemon juice and a little olive oil), brown rice, quinoa, barley, millet, whole wheat pasta. 3. Choose lean proteins and spread the intake out throughout the day, not all in one sitting. Protein should fill ¼ of your plate at each meal, depending on where you are in your training schedule/season, or activity level. 4. Choose olive oil or canola oil most often, avoiding butter and trans fats. It may be easy to cook with these oils, but check your food labels. You will find hiding saturated and trans fats in the foods found in the center isles of the grocery store. 5. Make water your main source of hydration, limiting or avoiding any sugar sweetened beverages. Milk is a great source of protein and vitamins/minerals, but limit to 1-2 servings per day! 6. If you aren’t already, get and stay active! If you are already, and want to take it to the next level, fine tuning #1-5 are crucial. The timing and portions of these will vary among each athlete type, season of training, gender, and age. Emily Maddux, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with Top Nutrition & Performance, can provide you with a customized roadmap to meeting your health and fitness goals! FUSSELL OFFERS NEW HOPE FOR THOSE WITH SCOLIOSIS

A

ccording to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, scoliosis (an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine), affects 2 to 3 percent of the population, or an estimated 6 to 9 million people in the United States. Scoliosis can develop any time, from infancy to adulthood. Eighty percent of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis, meaning there is no known cause. While there is no known cure, there is treatment available for those diagnosed with scoliosis. Until recently, the only treatment options for scoliosis were observation (waiting to see if it progresses), bracing (if the spine had not reached maturity) and surgery. However, in recent years, numerous studies in scientific journals have begun to recognize corrective exercise as an option for treating scoliosis. Corrective exercise, specifically Scolio-Pilates, has been proven to help those with scoliosis improve their quality of life. However, instruction certification does not come easy for this highly specialized program that requires extensive additional training for instructors. Sharon Fussell, teacher and owner/ operator of Pilates on Lookout, is the only instructor who holds the Scolio-Pilates certification in the state of Tennessee. Fussell was inspired to undertake this additional training after noticing how many people suffer from scoliosis. In some cases, this condition goes undiagnosed for years, and she wanted to help those afflicted live with less pain. Sharon obtained her additional training in California from the founder of Scolio-Pilates, Karena Thek. This additional training is already yielding results. According to Scolio-Pilates client THE BACK NINE OF CHATTANOOGA ♌ ADVERTISING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD ♌ 22

Laura Hausler, “Sharon helped me with pain caused by my scoliosis. She listened and coached me as we tracked progress and increased my mobility again. For me, the worst part of dealing with scoliosis is not being able to perform even routine daily tasks. Working with Sharon helped me feel comfortable moving again after taking a three-year break from exercise. She got me doing Pilates when I was ready to give up. Sharon believed in me, and it helped me believe in my own health and get moving again!” In addition to the Scolio-Pilates certification, Fussell also holds a Pilates Method Alliance certification, the only thirdparty certification in the Pilates field. To keep this certification current, she is required to complete at least 16 hours of continuing education every two yearsl however, she routinely takes 40 or more hours per year to stay abreast of all the latest developments. For more information about taking Socio-Pilates or Pilates in general, contact Sharon Fussell at dfsf1963@comcast.net or (423) 991-1757.

We provide individualized 1 on 1, high quality instruction in the Chattanooga Tennessee area. Our instructor, Sharon Fussell PMA-CPT™, has certifications as a Scolio-Pilates Practitioner and the Pilates Method Alliance.

FUTURISTIC MATERIALS IN GOLF

BY JASPER GRIFFIN

T

he game of golf has, as with all sports, evolved over the years. Golf itself has its origins dating as far back as the Roman era. Historians of the game can debate this until they’re blue in the face, but one thing is very clear. The equipment has changed dramatically. Perhaps most dramatically, is the club itself. In this article, I’ll be going over the main-types of clubs used and the technology that is pushing those clubs forward into the future. Originally, golf club shafts were crafted from hardwoods like ash, orangewood, bluemahoo and purpleheart with heads made from apple, pear, dogwood and beech. Hickory was also used, however it had a tendency to break on the back swing. Persimmon ended up as the go-to material for the construction of golf clubs for quite a while. And then came the first metal-headed wood in 1979. TaylorMade had ushered in a new era in golf technology

and a began.

proverbial

arms

race

While steel is still one of, if not the, most common material for the creation of woods, titanium is steadily becoming more common on the shanks. Other, lighter and more durable materials are also coming to market, such as carbon fiber and scandium. The design of modern day woods consists of a graphite shaft, which allows for better flex than wood with a hollowed shaft of steel, titanium or one of those wonderful, spaceaged composites. Perhaps the wood that has most benefited from new technology is the driver. With lighter shafts and lighter heads comes more efficiency and power on the swing. That equals more distance off of the tee. The wood isn’t the only high-tech club in your bag now-a-days, however. The Iron was traditionally made of, well, iron. Forged iron, specifically. With the advent of light, strong alloys, manufacturers have been able to begin making ‘cavity-back’ heads. These cavitybacked irons allow for higher

THE BACK NINE OF CHATTANOOGA ♦ ADVERTISING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD ♦ 24

moments of interia and lower centers of mass. In English, that means the club is easier to swing and gives better distance in comparison to older forged ‘muscle-back’ designs. A well made, modern iron in the hands of a skilled golfer can be a lethal weapon on the course. The humble putter has also seen changes. When I started playing golf, the putter was a simple, oblong piece of steel on a steel shaft. Maybe it would have a line across the top to help me aim, but that was really it. There wasn’t much to it. Now, putters are benefiting from wide, titanium heads, carbon shafts and grooved faces. Just the grooved faces are a big help. With a normal, smooth face, there is more of a skid off of the face than a roll. With a grooved face the club sort of ‘grips’ the ball and gives more of a roll. There’s less skipping and more rolling, thus making for a more accurate shot. All of these developments have happened over just a handful of years. The next five or ten years in golf should be most interesting. As more and more technology becomes available for manufacturers to take advantage of, the more technology we get to use in the game. Who knows what the skunkworks of the major golf companies have brewing that could further revolutionize the game? Stay tuned and we’ll find out together.

TIPS FOR PURSUING A PROFESSIONAL GOLF CAREER

G

olf has recently become a much more popular game to the world of sports. In recent years, the game of golf has also seen an increase as a career choice as golf programs and golf schools around the country make it that much easier to enter into the field. Below you will find some tips on how to pursue your professional golf career. HAVE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME You need to be familiar with the game of golf when you’re making the decision to have a golf career. This entails having a huge commitment to this sport and knowing everything there is to know about the rules, golf etiquette, how to play, etc. Before you do this, you should be positive that this is what you want to do. Can you imagine yourself playing golf for a living? Do you find yourself spending countless hours on the driving range, practice green or course? If you do, then this if a perfect start for you. But if some of your worst moments happened on a golf

course, or you think you might like a career in something besides golf, you might want to just keep this game as a hobby for the weekend with the guys. HAVE A BACKUP PLAN You always want to have a backup plan. It’s not impossible to succeed as a professional golfer, but it can be difficult. If it doesn’t work out for you, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t pursue a golfing career in some way. There are many options, such as golf instruction, golf facility management, golf business management and golf equipment sales. These are all jobs that you can benefit off of for experience and education, and will also hopefully interest you almost as much as playing the game itself. GET AN EDUCATION FROM A GOOD SCHOOL No different from any other professional career, a good education is a must and very important in the golf industry. Golf schooling really opens up a lot of

THE BACK NINE OF CHATTANOOGA ♦ ADVERTISING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD ♦ 26

doors to opportunities that others who are seeking a professional golf career might not get. Having a golf degree on your resume also tells employers that you know that game and the business nature of the game, making you a more attractive pick over someone who would require more training in the field. The fact that you pursued an education in the business shows that you have already gained a lasting interest to the sport, whereas someone without that kind of background could decide in a month or two that golf just isn’t the thing for him or her. This is one of the best ways to let employers know and prove to them that you want the job. GAIN AS MUCH PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AS POSSIBLE Yes, a degree does say a lot about you to an employer, but so does your work history. The more work experience you get in the industry before you graduate, the better chance you have of finding a good job right out of school. A lot of different options are available to those who are pursuing a professional golfing career. Most golf schools have a lot of thriving internship programs that allow students to gain valuable work and experience, while receiving an education at the same time. Your school, a lot of the time, may also be able to provide you with a long-term part time or fulltime job while you are a student. REMEMBER! The whole point of pursuing a professional golf career is to be employed doing something you absolutely love. If you become to stressed out all the time or have a sense of urgency to make your education and career into more of a job, you could permanently destroy any enjoyment you’ve ever had for the game. Try to remember to always stay optimistic and make an effort to keep both work and school fun no matter what trials may face you ahead. And always remember whatever happens: don’t forget that you are in this spot because you followed what you wanted to be. HOW TO PLAY A LINKS COURSE

L

inks golf courses lie on often remote stretches of land close to the sea. Playing a links is an exhilarating but demanding experience. You’re exposed to extreme weather conditions and usually play in winds far stronger than you ever experience inland. From a distance such a course looks flat and quite featureless. But once you set foot on a links you discover that the ground is a mass of humps and hollows - many of the tee shots you face are semi-blind. Hard, fast running fairways can cause the occasional unpredictable bounce. Your ball may shoot forward on the first bounde, while the same shot pitching into a hump stops quickly. If you’re very unfortunate a ball flying straight down the middle of the fairway kicks into the rough. The short grass and closely mown fairways on a links course can remove some of the fear from your mid-range approach shots to the green. A crisply struck iron shot generates a great deal of backspin because very little grass comes between the clubface and the ball at impact. WATCH THE WIND Strong wind is an important feature of links golf, so make sure you use it to your advantage whenever possible. Try to forget the distance you usually hit the ball - wind drastically alters your nomal club selection. Into the wind demands a precise strike. Always take plenty of club and swinger shorter than normal. A three-quarter shot helps you hit the ball lower to give you more control in the wind. Remember that playing into the wind exaggerates the spin off links turf and you can stop the ball even on firm greens. Wind behind should encourage you to hit the ball higher to gain maximum distance on the shot. With luck you can reduce long par 5s to a comfortable 4 strokes and look for birdies on par 4s. Downwind it’s difficult to put enough backspin on the ball to pitch and stop it neatly on the green. Take less club, swing smoothly and let the wind carry the ball towards the target. Aim to pitch the ball well short of the green and expect plenty of run on the shot. THE BACK NINE OF CHATTANOOGA ♦ ADVERTISING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD ♦ 28

Cross winds force you to aim way off line and allow the ball to be blown back on target. Depending on the strength and direction of the wind, select a spot to one side and set up to hit the ball straight at it. Swing normally and let the wind do the rest. SHORT GAME STRATEGY Many golfers forget that wind affects the short game as well as the longer shots. This is especially true on a links course. When you chip from close to the green your main thought must be to keep the ball near the ground. A low pitch and run is always a safer shot in wind than a high lob. A 7 iron is the ideal club for the shot. The ball runs twice the distance it travels in the air, so select an area to pitch the ball on and visualize it running towards the hole. Grip down the club and position the ball towards the center of your stance. Swing the club as you do witha long putt - the arms moving back and through togther with very little wrist break. Make sure you keep your hands ahead of the ball throughout to promote a crisp strike. Bear in mind that a long putt on a large sloping links green can often take two or three different breaks. It;s important to study the slope of the green carefully. Look at a putt along the ball-to-target link and then from the side on to give you a better perspective. Wind also affects the roll of the ball. Set yourself realistic goals - occasionally a long putt drops but you should never be disappointed to get down in 2 strokes. DEEP TROUBLE Bunkers are hard to spot in the humps and hollows of a links course and devillishly difficult to escape from. A yardage chart comes in useful if you’re not familiar with the course - it can perform the role of an experienced caddie. Study the chart and lay up short of bunkers if necessary. Don’t take risks - it’s fine to sacrifice distance, particularly if it keeps you on the fairway. When you land in a fairway pot bunker it’s unlikely you have a direct route to the green - concentrate on making sure you next shot isn’t from the same spot. The powdery fine sand is perfect for the high splash shot. Open your stance and keep the clubface open. Swing long and smooth on an out-to-in path. Huge sandy dunes are punishing hazards that surround many fairways and greens. You’re bound to be faced with an awkward stance and the thick, wiry grass doesn’t let go of your ball easily. Play your recovery with a sand wedge and grip the club tight. It’s difficult to achieve any distance, so don’t be too ambitious with your escape. HOW TO MAINTAIN GOLF CART BATTERIES

S

erious, even dangerous threats can eventuate by improperly maintaining your golf cart’s batteries.

A lack of knowledge about basic golf cart battery maintenance can lead to all kinds of problems. Some users assume that the batteries that operate their golf carts are maintenance-free. However, the key to achieving optimum performance and long life is a solid golf cart battery maintenance program. It is recommended that you obtain following equipment for use in golf cart battery care and maintenance: A wrench; distilled water; a voltmeter (an instrument used for measuring the voltage between two points in an electric circuit); a hydrometer (a tool used to measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte solution); a post cleaner; some baking soda; petroleum jelly and possibly the most of all goggles and gloves. Always wear protective clothing, acid proof gloves and goggles when handling lead acid batteries and remove all jewellery. It’s important to have lots of water and baking soda nearby as this will neutralize any acid spills from battery refilling and prevent further corrosive damage. Remember, the electrolyte is a solution of acid and water, so skin contact should be avoided and, do not smoke near batteries and never add acid to a battery. Golf carts are typically powered by six lead-acid batteries mounted beneath the front seat. THE BACK NINE OF CHATTANOOGA ♦ ADVERTISING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD ♦ 30

First of all, examine the outside appearance of the batteries. You should look for cracks in the container and the top of the battery. Posts and connections should be free of dirt, fluids and corrosion. You should replace any damaged batteries. Check that all vent caps are tight. Then clean the battery top with a cloth or brush and a solution of baking soda and water ensuring that any cleaning solution or any other foreign matter does not get inside the battery. Then rinse with clean water and dry with a clean cloth. Solvents or spray cleaners should not be used. Then clean the battery terminals and the inside of the cable clamps with a post and clamp cleaner. Reconnect the clamps to the terminals and thinly coat them with petroleum jelly. Always keep the area around the batteries clean and dry. Water should only be added after fully charging the battery. Prior to charging, there should be enough water to cover the plates. If the battery has been discharged (partially or fully), the water level should be above the plates. Some important things to remember are: Do not allow plates to be exposed to air and do not fill the water all the way up to the cap. Do not use water with a high mineral content. You should use only distilled or deionized water. Check water levels in each cell of each battery weekly to ensure that the leaded plates in the battery are submerged in liquid. Don’t fill the cell all the way up — add just enough water to cover the plates. Lastly, please follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintaining batteries. GADGETS IN GOLF

D

o you ever feel like you know just enough about golf gadgets to be dangerous? Let’s see if we can fill in some of the gaps with the latest info from golf gadgets experts. It seems like new information is discovered about something every day. And the topic of golf gadgets is no exception. Keep reading to get more fresh news about golf gadgets. There are tons of golf gadgets out there, mainly because of the incredible increase in popularity of the sport. The more people who are ready to play the game, the more they’re all looking for ways to improve their game. The result is that an industry that was doing fairly well before has boomed. There are entire companies built around a single golf gadget, and the results range from incredible golf aids to the ridiculous contraptions. Take a look at some of your options. If you’re having trouble finding time to hit the driving range and your backyard is too limited for driving practice, you have some options. You can play virtual golf, but this lacks the satisfying feel of the club striking the ball. You might find that a limited flight ball is the answer you’ve been looking for. These are just what the name implies. You have a ball that you place on the tee, then hit just like any other ball. But the ball won’t travel outside a particular area. Or you can work with a regular ball and a net. The catch here is that you have to hit the net - every time. Of course, putting pads and practice aids for your putting game have been around for ages. Give yourself the advantage of practice time in your office or living room. Choose from kits that are as simple as a pad with a cup, or those that offer features such as ball return. THE BACK NINE OF CHATTANOOGA ♦ ADVERTISING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD ♦ 32

If you’re into technology, you might find good use for a digital scorekeeper. Not only do you have an immediate way of tracking your score on the course, you have a digital record that you can save and Instantly recall scores from past games to help improve your current game. Every dedicated golfer has probably been at the receiving end of some silly golf gifts. Think covers for your golf clubs - from handmade crochet covers to cutesy cartoon characters and everything in between. There are probably few ideas for golf club covers that haven’t been tried on the market and these seem to be universal golf gifts. Covers do serve a purpose and many golfers are even secure enough to walk the course with tigers and mouse heads proudly protruding from the golf bag. Are you having trouble lining up the exact spot you should be aiming for on the golf ball? You can find a stencil to help. Simply use the stencil to mark the ball, place it on the tee as directed, and you’ve got a clear target. How about a metronome? No, you’re not going to be taking your guitar onto the golf course, but a golf metronome can help you work on the rhythm of your swing. There’s no doubt that the golfers have tons of gadgets to choose from. Many offer real help to the golfer, while others are simply ways to collect money for a useless product. Some of these gadgets and gizmos will be completely wasted on one golfer but will be just what another needs to improve their golf game. Is there really any information about golf gadgets that is nonessential? We all see things from different angles, so something relatively insignificant to one may be crucial to another. HITTING A GREAT CHIP SHOT

1: THE SETUP Place the golf club level on its sole with the club face square to the target. Measuring a foot and a half behind the ball, stand with your feet near one another. Turn your entire body (feet, hips and shoulders) somewhat to the left of the target. This is called an open stance and makes the motion less demanding - even on short swings. STEP 2: PREPARE TO CHIP Incline your abdominal area forward from your hip, keep your legs somewhat bowed and put your weight on your left foot.

Rest the club shaft on your left thigh and keep your usual grip on the club. STEP 3: CHIP THE BALL Verify the weight stays on your left foot all through the swing to send the golf ball into the air. The swing is produced by turning on the axis of your spine, verifying that your body inclines your arms and hands. Keep your arms and wrists loose during the swing. The swing is similar to a pendulum where the backswing is similarly the length of the followthrough. In order to make sure you are utilizing your body rather

THE BACK NINE OF CHATTANOOGA ♦ ADVERTISING TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD ♦ 34

than your arms and hands, search for the V shape between your shoulders and hands. Keeping this shape will help with your followthrough. Here are some different tips that you may find valuable... DON’T LET YOUR SHOULDERS COME UP A simple approach to make the fancied plummeting blow is to hold your left shoulder down through the effect. Don’t raise your left shoulder -- keep it low and square to your target line. MAKE YOUR WRISTS FLAT You won’t chip well if you flip your hands or twist your wrists. Your left wrist ought to be as level as could be expected under the circumstances. In the event that you experience difficulty keeping your left wrist from breaking down, take a stab at utilizing your putting hold. CLOSE YOUR TOE In spite of the fact that your hands ought to be detached and your left wrist straight, they do need to turn so the club turns over on its heel through the effect. Attempt to easily pivot the toe of the whelp to your target (don’t yank it) as you swing through the effect range. KEEP YOUR WEIGHT FORWARD At location, circulate the dominant part of your weight over your left foot and, all the more important, keep it there through your stroke. On the off chance that you hang once again on your right side, you’ll swing up into effect and that is the issue that got you here in any case.
