ersatility is clearly the byword of this modern multifunctional, multi-generational outdoor retreat. With several outdoor entertaining spaces to choose between and a large swimming pool to tempt the family outside, there is something for all ages. When Shawn Townsend of Ashtown Landscapes was called in to transform the backyard into a modern space where family could swim, play, eat, cook and relax, he couldn’t wait to start.
“The goal was to create a space that was child-friendly but equally appealing to adults, whether they were looking to entertain or simply relax. Making the most of the space was important, as was creating various areas for entertaining and relaxing,” says Shawn. Shawn and his team used different levels to create different garden rooms. In doing so, they took into account the property’s orientation. “No matter what the time of day, there is a shaded area the family can escape to,” he says. One room that can always be relied upon to provide some welcome shade is the solid-roofed pool house. Designed and built so that it seems to float over the pool, this structure contains a fridge, sink and storage. There is also a ceiling fan and toilet so there is no need to traipse back to the

house.“The design of the pool house reflects the main house. This is most evident in the Colorbond roof and the exposed roof trusses under the eaves, which add a period look without taking away from the contemporary appearance of the overall design,” says Shawn. Creating a fresh, clean look, the base of the pool house, which dips into the pool, is clad with Pearl White mosaic tiles, while the floor of the pool house is paved in Pearl White granite. The same white granite was used for the pool coping and for the barbecue and seating area located at the rear of the house. More granite was used, this time a dark colour called Nero Notte for the raised platform that provides access to the pool house and is used by the kids as a jumpingoff point for the pool. Running along the back of this platform is timber bench seating as well as comfy synthetic-weave armchairs, located on the other side of the pool house beneath an open-roofed pergola. From the lounge area and pool house, you have a clear view through the frameless glass pool fencing to the barbecue and seating area at the back of the residence. This area features a built-in barbecue with splashback and built-in, cushion-topped seating set against a feature panel of timber boards. The rendered wall that forms the backdrop for this area adds privacy and helps define the space. As low maintenance was a goal, Shawn chose plants for their hardiness as well as their form. Among the plants you will spy are white azaleas, Hill’s fig, orange jessamine, bird of paradise, cycads and Japanese maples. The lawn is artificial, eliminating the need for watering and mowing, leaving more time for having fun and enjoying the great outdoors. T

hile the popular Melbourne beachside town of Brighton may seem a long, long way from the Californian resort city of Palm Springs, the two find a lot of common ground in this recently reinvented rear family garden. The owners of this Brighton property wanted to feel like they were in a resort every time they set foot in their backyard, and they were very clear about how they wanted to achieve that. An outdoor room, designed for entertaining, was a must, as were lush plantings. In terms of style, a Palm Springs feel was essential. Armed with this brief, David Franklin of Franklin Landscape & Design set about creating a holiday-at-home haven. The existing kidney-shaped swimming pool was clearly the central feature of the rear garden so all the new elements had to work in harmony with it. To ensure a seamless transition from old to new, the coping around the pool was updated and a curved poolside deck created. “The curved decking is a standout feature of the new design. Getting the curves just right was extremely hard but the result is stunning, says David.

“There are many comfy places to entertain in this rear garden, beginning with the outdoor room” “The curved walls and in-built seating reference the shape of the pool and decking and give the overall landscape a natural feel.” The sound of water in motion is a must in a resort-style garden, hence the inclusion of a sheer-descent water feature. The feature wall that forms the backdrop for the water feature is clad in shimmering mosaic tiles to match the pool’s waterline. At the foot of the water feature, a series of stepping stones leads across a pebble-filled pond, linking both parts of the garden. “There are many comfy places to entertain in this rear garden, beginning with the outdoor room. This has a television, sound system, fireplace, ceiling fan, kitchen and a lounge. But it’s not only used for entertaining. The outdoor room gives the owners a place where they can escape to and take in the view across the pool and the lush landscape,” says David. Adjacent to the outdoor room, there is an open-air dining area. Across from the dining area is in-built seating, with mirror-image seating also appearing at the other

end of the pool. In this part of the garden, the drawcard is the firepit zone. This is paved in travertine and features custom-built seating oriented to face a firepit with a natural rust finish. “The planting palette is quite simple but achieves the tropical feel and layered effect we were going for,” adds David. “In choosing the plants, we were mindful of the need to soften the hard elements of the garden, which we did by picking plants that hang over the walls.” The result speaks for itself. hen you are blessed with space, you can really unleash your imagination and create your dream outdoor entertaining precinct. Having bought and demolished the house next door, the owners of this Melbourne home found themselves with all the room they needed to create an idyllic outdoor haven. indoor-outdoor connection was essential, the outdoor kitchen, dining and lounge areas were created as an extension of the house and flow straight off the interior kitchen and dining room. To create a sense of warmth, the outdoor room boasts spotted gum timber decking while, to ensure good ventilation and capture the maximum amount of natural light, the roof was designed with a raised central parapet and fitted with electrically operated glass louvre windows. The outdoor kitchen is fully equipped with a barbecue, wood-fired oven and two under-counter fridges. The solid bluestone preparation bench, into which a sink was placed, complements the glass splashback that stretches the width of the kitchen. Once you step off the decking, you feel the cool surface of the flamed granite paving underfoot. Granite was used for the surrounds of the new swimming pool and to fashion four “floating” steps within the pool that provide a place to sit and chat with those cooling down in the sparkling water.

BELOW Sunlight is invited into the main outdoor room through the glass windows of the raised parapet. BOTTOM The gas heater sits within a wall of honed bluestone. To one side sits a wall-mounted television.
At the rear of the pool, there is a full-length spotted gum-clad fence with a series of raised rendered garden beds. These are planted with bird of paradise, which are alternated with pleached ficus and underplanted with dwarf agapanthus. The fully tiled lap pool and spa incorporate numerous features such as multi-coloured LED lighting and an uplit sheer-descent waterfall in the raised planter. This adds to the night-time appeal of the pool area and is a boon when entertaining. The showpiece at the end of the pool is a purposebuilt yoga room with bifold doors opening onto the pool area. The yoga room, which is also used for relaxing with friends and family, has a floating timber floor and a timber-panelled ceiling. This gives the space a sense of warmth and welcome. This modern outdoor sanctuary now provides for the family’s every need. tunning is a word that is often bandied about but in this case, it is the perfect adjective to describe the luxurious outdoor room that graces the impeccably landscaped grounds of this impressive property. Elevating entertaining to an art form, this truly lavish outdoor room not only caters to the family’s every conceivable need, it commands a splendid outlook. Of grand scale, this multi-levelled garden is an entertainer’s delight. The garden was
designed in two stages, the first by The Garden Company, which created a large pond, putting green and gardens around the house. The second stage, which included the outdoor room, water feature, arbour and casual conversation nooks, was designed by Roger Brown of Focal Point Garden Design. This second stage was developed on a sloping half-acre block that sat behind the existing property and was acquired by the owners four years ago. There were few existing trees that Roger felt were worth retaining, but otherwise he had a clean slate with which to work. “The owners asked for a garden with lots of colour and interest be created on the new block so I suggested a ‘botanical gardens’ theme where they could walk along meandering paths flowing in and

“The owners asked that a garden with lots of colour and interest be created” out of garden rooms filled with trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals,” says Roger. “I also suggested an outdoor room with an expansive lawn for entertaining, soothing water features, an arbour tunnel, sitting areas nestled along curved dry-stone walls, and carefully sited sculptures.” To ensure the new garden fit seamlessly with the already established landscape, one of the first things Roger looked at was the large existing pond at the rear boundary of the original block. “The rubber-liner pond was enlarged and reconstructed to incorporate a concrete shell tiled with black glass mosaics, an extensive negative edge and a 1.2m-high spillover wall directing the water to a hidden tank,” explains Roger. “Hiding the tank, a spotted gum boardwalk hugs the spillover wall then veers away to form a seamless transition between the existing garden and the new landscape below.” To make the journey from the existing garden to the newly landscaped area a treat for all of the senses, Roger designed an arbour, built using hollow steel painted a natural rust colour, which is now draped in Boston ivy and strategically lit at night. “This presents a lovely entry to
the lawn area that adjoins the contemporary, fully selfcontained outdoor room,” he says. Once you traverse the lawn, another timber boardwalk continues down to a flourishing native garden on the lower tier, where dozens of plant genera grow, attracting an abundance of native fauna. There is also a rustic paved path that runs through the lower garden beds, leading to a private gathering point with in-built seating and a firepit. Of course, it’s the outdoor room (the plan for which was drafted by James Couper of JJC Design) that is the hub of the family’s entertaining. It incorporates a contemporary kitchen, a sleek dining and spacious lounge area, not to mention all the mod cons such as a television and sound system. Could you ask for more? T

aptivated by the architecture of the mid-20th century, designer Peta Donaldson of Natural Design decided to interweave some design threads from this iconic period with complementary contemporary elements to create an enthralling entertaining space. The garden, which Peta called The Pavilion and designed for the 2014 Australian Garden Show Sydney, is carved into four distinct spaces: the entrance, pavilion, pool and lawn. “Each serves its own purpose yet the landscape comes together seamlessly to create a functional and sociable garden,” explains Peta. “The entrance stimulates curiosity,” she continues. “This is achieved by a series of custom floating concrete steps that provides a gradual passage towards the elevated pavilion.” The pavilion, set within garden beds of layered planting, is what Peta describes as the “heart of the garden”. From its elevated position, you can sit in comfort and take in the entire garden, day or night, rain or shine. While the furnishings within the pavilion are sparse, this does not mean the space feels cold or Spartan. “This is a warm and luxurious space, an effect that is further enhanced by a suspended stainless-steel fireplace,” says Peta. The circular plunge pool, its external walls clad in shimmering glass mosaic tiles, adds another dimension to the space. Designed to fulfill a dual destiny — that of a pool where guests can interact and a large-scale water
“The neutral colour palette allows the lush planting to become a prominent feature” feature — it adds a dash of subtle colour to offset the garden’s otherwise all-white colour palette. A circular opening was created in the pavilion roof directly over the plunge pool, allowing natural light into the space. This helps draw the eye to the ceiling of the pavilion, which is clad in Glosswood white lining boards from the 3D Designer Profile series. These lining boards work in harmony with the feature wall (comprised of white polyurethane 3D panels in Lump Sculpture Studio’s Fish Scales pattern), concrete paving and brickwork. Peta paid particular attention to the selection of different yet compatible hard textures, which she then softened with lush vegetation. “The hardscaping textures throughout the garden create visual amusement while the neutral colour palette allows the lush planting to become a prominent feature,” says Peta. “The plants were selected for their strength in foliage texture, shape and form, essentially promoting a verdant and calm setting.” The final flourish is a large white mid-20th centuryinspired sculpture, Tricycle, from Lump Sculpture Studio. This garden, which was built by Green Art Gardens and Andrews Edwards Landscaping, won a silver medal at the 2014 Australian Garden Show Sydney.

Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, this modern display garden, which he dubbed Laconic, made an indelible impression. With its emphasis on straight lines, strong geometric shapes and solid contrasting colours, Laconic was striking in its simplicity. One of its most compelling elements is its use of colour and form. The feature wall of the pavilion, one of the first features you’re drawn to, serves as a backdrop to the dining area. Studio, as were the wall-mounted bright-orange acrylic “floating” Stack and Adorn sculptures, which drew attention to the discreet barbecue area. Demonstrating that you can include a barbecue, no matter how limited your outdoor space, Mark chose a stainless-steel Smart wall-mount barbecue from My Alfresco. This is an electric barbecue that can be folded away when not in use, allowing more space for you to move around. Here, it was attached to a part-wall that divides the barbecue area from the poolside lounge. The dining area, comprised of a raised platform and streamlined pavilion, was just a few steps from the barbecue. A Bubbles metal screen from Lump Sculpture Studio was fitted in the roof of the pavilion, adding visual interest and creating patterned shadows when the light filtered through. The dining setting, from Tribu’s Natal Alu collection, references the crisp, clean lines of the design. Ensuring a coordinated look, a Natal Alu sofa is the focal point of the lounge area. To screen this space
“One of the garden’s most compelling elements is its use of colour and form”
without making it feel closed in, Mark chose Outer Art’s Tessellated 3D aluminium composite panels, which were mounted in black frames to pick up on the black accents of the pavilion. For the paving and pool coping, Mark specified Nero Notte granite. This is a deep charcoal-coloured granite that contrasts with the white walls and pops of bright orange. For the interior surface of the pool, Swimple Rain glass mosaics were used. Not surprisingly, this garden, which was built by Kiama Pools and Landscapes, won a Gold medal at the 2013 Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. T

f you’re fortunate enough to live on the coast — and you have space for a swimming pool and a pool house — one option is to create a Hamptons-style retreat. Known for its classic coastal style and elegant outdoor entertaining, The Hamptons, an exclusive New York summer spot on Long Island, has been the inspiration for many holiday-style alfresco havens, especially those where entertaining is the main goal. For this property, located in the popular Victorian coastal town of Mount Martha, the fresh, seaside-inspired Hamptons’ approach proved the perfect fit. When Steve Magliano and the team at Acorn Garden Houses were called in, the swimming pool was already in place but the rest of the garden was just lawn. With this blank canvas
before him, Steve set about creating a pool house and deck that would be just as suited to large parties as it would be to relaxed family get-togethers. “The owners wanted the pool house to be genuinely inviting so family and friends would feel comfortable and completely at home in the space. To achieve this, I drew my design inspiration from the beach cottages and gardens one finds in the Hamptons,” explains Steve. When you first spy this poolside paradise, your eye is drawn to the outdoor kitchen built along one wall of the deck and the splashback clad in deep-green handmade fish-scale tiles. It was important to the owners that the entertaining area be self-contained, which meant they would not have to return to the main house for anything when cooking or serving a meal. With this in mind, the kitchen has an inbuilt chef’s barbecue, a sink, an undercounter bar fridge and storage cabinets aplenty. To add character and for a visual treat, Steve incorporated a solid-copper vintage rangehood. The pool house features large floor-to-ceiling bifold

doors that push right back, giving entry to the lounge area where the crisp colours are set off by the elegantly simple classic furnishings. Complete with pull-out sofas, the pool house easily transforms into private guest accommodation, providing everything that guests would ever need for an overnight stay, including a bathroom. Just because the pool house seems like an oasis, this doesn’t mean it is cut off from the world of technology, explains Steve. “An integrated Sonos

Completing the picture is a poolside relaxation area paved in random stone for a rustic look and furnished with sunloungers and a cantilevered umbrella. T

he goal for Chris Slaughter of Scenic Blue Design was two-fold. He needed to create a seamless connection between the newly extended home and existing swimming pool, as well as provide a stunning, family-friendly space for entertaining large gatherings, namely post-race soirées for the local yacht club. “Outdoor entertainment was a priority, which meant outdoor cooking was a must,” says Chris. “The owners wanted a design that would allow partygoers to sit at the outdoor kitchen, sharing a cold drink with the chef and being part of the overall cooking experience. Outdoor dining and lounging was also a must. These areas needed to be designed in such a way that guests always felt part of the party scene.” The outdoor kitchen boasts a bespoke barbecue integrated into a bench made of highly polished formed

The custom-designed concrete bench provides space for both food preparation and eating — guests can sidle up to the bench and sit on one of the modern stools. The bench also includes an in-built drinks cooler and the fittings and shelving are of high-quality fabricated 316 brushed stainless steel, ensuring a look that is highly contemporary. The outdoor living area is paved in full-bodied, largeformat porcelain tiles. The tiles have a lovely pale, natural colour, which contrasts nicely with the deeper tones of the new timber decking around the pool. This outdoor living area has lounge, dining and cooking spots, providing the complete entertaining experience. To resolve the level change between the deck and pool surrounds, Chris created a step-up and a channel filled with strappy Liriope muscari ‘Samantha’. This turned what could have been an awkward transition into an eyecatching design feature, especially when the channel is lit at night. From what goes underfoot to what sits overhead, Chris needed to provide additional shelter from the setting westerly sun so he installed a structurally designed cantilevered roofing system. While enjoying the shade and protection of the roof, guests have an open view of the pool and its surrounding gardens thanks to the semiframeless glass fencing. The poolside landscaping presents a pleasing outlook and features a plethora of plants, including Acer negundo ‘Variegatum’, Cordyline fruticosa ‘Negra’ and ‘Rubra’, and Viburnum odoratissimum. Now, as guests enter the front door, they are drawn through to the rear of the house where large bifold doors open to the easy-flowing entertaining area and foliage-wrapped pool. T

ontemporary design is all about creating cohesive outdoor living areas and achieving an effortless flow from inside to out. Offering the ultimate lifestyle solution, this outdoor room is seamlessly integrated with the home and provides everything needed to entertain in style and comfort. The owners of this Melbourne property wanted to entertain year-round but they didn’t want to be at the mercy of the weather. A decision was made to add an extra room to the house, one with a large picture window and a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door that could be opened during the warmer months or shut on wet and windy days. They approached Custom Outdoor Living (formerly Pergolas R Us) to design and build an elegant outdoor room that would provide for relaxed entertaining as well as more formal social occasions. Of course, as the new room would be attached to the dwelling, the design had to complement the existing architecture and there had to be a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. Both inside and out, the walls of the outdoor room have been finished with a textured render colour-matched to the exterior walls of the existing residence. The colour palette within the room was chosen to harmonise with that used
“Key elements of the design are the large openings, which help bring the outside in” inside the house. This includes the shimmering full-height tiled splashback behind the barbecue and rangehood. The outdoor kitchen, which stretches along one wall, caters for every conceivable cooking and entertaining need. There is a barbecue, rangehood and cabinetry, all in stainless steel. Just a step or two away is a modern dining setting for eight. In summer, a ceiling fan keeps diners cool while in winter, a wall-mounted electric infrared halogen heater provides welcome warmth. Key elements of the design are the large openings, which help bring the outside in and blur the lines between indoors and out. In the wall that faces the house, there is a wide window that provides a view of the garden and allows sunlight to flood in. For those days when respite from the sun is desired, however, the retractable cafe blind mounted on the outside of the window can be pulled down. Then there is the stacking sliding door. When opened, the room feels fully connected to the garden and when closed, light still flows through. To further enhance the connection with the garden, the sandstone paving used in the outdoor room flows around the back of the house to form a patio. T

hile a swimming pool isn’t essential to creating an exciting outdoor entertaining experience, it certainly does helps, especially if you have children. Mind you, it’s not just youngsters who enjoy a refreshing dip. When you’re hosting a summer party, the adults will appreciate the chance to cool down or awaken their inner child with a pool game or two. The pool, which includes a roomy raised spa, was designed to be used in tandem with the home’s newly created outdoor living spaces. When friends come over, they can revel in the cool water of the pool, the warm bubbles of the spa or stretch out with a glass of something chilled on the poolside deck. When chatting with friends or enjoying an alfresco meal is on the agenda, there are three places guests can gather. One is an open-air seating area, the focal point of which is a large wood-burning firepit. This area features a long timber bench, built in an L shape. Large garden beds sit behind the bench and will, in time, provide a leafy backdrop.
The other gathering points are undercover and located adjacent to the house. These take the form of an inviting dining area and a spacious lounge. The latter is furnished with matching sofas, a coffee table and a floor rug. Built into the feature wall there is a fire place, above that a laser-cut screen and, to either side, wall niches with decorative lighting. A custom-built outdoor kitchen was also included in the undercover area. This incorporates a built-in barbecue and storage for barbecue tools and servingware along with matching under-bench fridges. To ensure a coordinated look throughout, bluestone was used for the pool coping and paving in the entertaining spaces. In the firepit area, the paving is interspersed with light-coloured pebbles to add visual interest. In contrast, the poolside deck was built out of merbau timber, its natural tones complementing the home’s brick exterior. Lighting is a key component of the new design and is included in and around the pool. At night, the glass mosaic tiles that clad the spa and pool glisten, while the uplit sheer-descent water feature and laser-cut light box draw focus to the pool’s shimmering water. In building this outdoor haven, Apex Pools & Spas has thought of all the most often overlooked details to create an amazing pool along with modern landscaping and welcoming spaces for entertaining. T

he owners of this recently renovated outdoor living area in Perth wanted to be sure they could entertain outside, even on a drizzly day. That’s why, when extended the existing patio, Ritz Exterior Design installed a flexible roof cover. Comprised of louvres that can be opened or shut by remote control, the roof has rain sensors that automatically close the louvres when rain is detected. A pizza oven was on the owners’ list of must-have inclusions, so the designer, Guy Ritz, gave it some thought
and came up with a design that incorporated a breakfastbar-style servery and space for wood storage. After discussion with the owners, granite was chosen for the benchtop. Now the owners, who already had a stainlesssteel barbecue, have an expanded menu of meals they can cook alfresco. To the right of the pizza oven, built-in bench seating was added. This can be used by guests when the owners entertain or by the owners themselves when they want to sit and watch their grandchildren play on the patch of newly installed artificial turf at the rear of the garden. To the left of the pizza oven is the barbecue and a timber dining table teamed with comfortable synthetic wicker dining chairs. Balau decking was chosen to create a feeling of warmth in the entertaining area and to complement the home’s extensive cedar bifold doors and timber floors, as well as the cedar lining on the existing fixed

“Balau decking was chosen to create a feeling of warmth within the entertaining area” patio roof. To create a seamless flow from inside to out, the hardwood decking boards were run in the same direction as the internal floorboards. To give the area some privacy, Ritz Exterior Design installed timber-slat screens to the top of the brick wall to match the existing side boundary wall screens. The team also installed new outdoor lighting. Good lighting is essential in an outdoor entertaining space, to create ambience and for functionality. In creating the extended entertaining space and installing the new turf area, a lot of hard graft was required. Before any elements of the new design could be implemented, Guy’s team had to first remove an existing water feature and fill in an existing swimming pool. Once filled, the pool had to be levelled and compacted, and only then could the new garden begin to take shape. Clearly, the effort was well worth it as the owners love their reinvigorated garden. T

ummer or winter, day or night, this newly built outdoor room has everything you could possibly want or need. There is a space for relaxation and a space for dining. A contemporary outdoor kitchen makes cooking for guests a pleasure, while a fireplace and ceiling heaters keep everyone nice and warm when the temperature drops. To cool guests on sultry days, there are ceiling fans and cafe blinds and, no matter what the season, family and guests can enjoy the pleasing outlook provided by the surrounding gardens. When the new area was being designed a decision was made to have a solid roof and solid walls so it was important nature could make its way into the interior rooms of the house, hence the inclusion of very large windows, a bi-fold door and skylights. The ceiling of the outdoor room features two recessed sections. These plaster insets contrast with the rich, warm tones of the timber lining boards used on the rest of the ceiling. A ceiling fan was installed in
the centre of each of the recessed panels along with a pair of streamlined, electric strip heaters. The space was divided into two living zones. The lounge area is set in front of bifold doors, which open up to reveal views of an elegant formal garden. The dining area, which is adjacent to the interior lounge room, has a dining setting that seats six and a stainless-steel outdoor kitchen with a double-fronted bar fridge and stainlesssteel rangehood. In the corner of the space is a gas fireplace mounted into a stacked-stone feature wall. This helps set the ambience and warm diners on chilly days. The design of the outdoor room is a mix of classic, contemporary and casual elements. The artworks, including an abstract sculpture and striking wall art, are of modern design. Adding a casual element is the timber lounge furniture and dining setting along with the stacked-stone feature wall. Contributing some classic touches are the feature urns, the potted ball-on-a-stick topiaries and the tiling on the floor. Designed and built by Custom Outdoor Living (formerly Pergolas R Us), the outdoor room is an adaptable space that can host intimate get-togethers or large gatherings, providing plenty of space for milling about. At night, the carefully considered lighting scheme creates a welcoming space that makes you want to linger. T

OUTDOOR BARS
Expert tip Some sort of roof or shade solution is recommended to protect the bar structure itself, as well as the contents of the bar (glassware, appliances etc). A covered bar also means you can comfortably use the area even when it’s raining.
Bar talk If you really want to be the host with the most, an outdoor bar will do the trick WORDS: Rachel Falzon hat better way to kick off the end of the working week than coming home to your own backyard bar? A bar can also be an asset if you want to create the ultimate chill-out zone or a place for partying. If designed well, it can cater for both. If you’re in the throes of designing an outdoor room or you’ve been thinking about adding a bar to the one you have, there are a few things you need to consider. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be sipping on cocktails in your enticing outdoor bar before you know it.

Custom or pre-built? While a pre-built bar can save time and energy, you could look at designing and building it yourself. “Custom designing your outdoor bar guarantees you will enjoy it for many years to come as it will be tailored to your own personal tastes,” says Bunnings Warehouse national leisure buyer, Cam Rist. “Also, remember that

pre-built bars may not always suit the style of your home or the outdoor space you have.” However, Adrian Swain from award-winning landscape design company ecodesign says a pre-built outdoor bar does have its advantages. “Choosing a proprietary product from a manufacturer will have the added benefit of a manufacturer’s warranty and service if there are ever any issues,” he says. Another advantage is that you can install it immediately. But, if you do still prefer something bespoke, a custom-made outdoor bar will allow you to create something that reflects your personality and your home’s design. Whether you decide to build it yourself or employ the services of a professional, there will be many decisions to make in terms of style and materials to ensure you enjoy your bar well into the future.
entertaining, particularly when enjoying a meal, it may be best to position the bar close to where your outdoor dining or entertainment area is so you won’t have to move far between zones. Most people opt to position their outdoor bar undercover, which provides extra protection and allows the bar to be used regardless of the weather. While positioning the bar undercover will ensure an extra level of protection, you will still need to consider the materials you choose so it stands the test of time. “Keep in mind that the bar will be outdoors, so you want to choose a countertop surface that will withstand a variety of elements,” says Cam. “The countertop will encounter a lot of wear and tear so make sure you choose a hard-wearing surface such as honed concrete, natural stone or tile. These surfaces are durable and long-lasting and will also add a stylish edge to your outdoor bar.”

Light touch Bar lighting, especially ambient lighting, can come in many forms. If you don’t have a power supply to the bar, then candles, oil lamps and tiki-style lamps (with a flaming torch sitting atop a stick or pole) will look fabulous. For more high-end bars, downlighting installed directly above the bar is ideal, and, for an intimate or ambient feel, add dimmer switches to control the light and place small lamps on either end of the bar. Neon or strip lighting behind the bar, where the bottles and glasses are kept, is a classic bar look. Think blue lighting against mirrored shelves.

choose will be determined by the style of your home and outdoor area. “Try to use at least one material that matches the materials used on your home,” he suggests. It’s also important to consider the size of your outdoor area. As with all furniture pieces, you need to ensure all elements are in proportion to the zone. “Make sure you think about the maximum space your new bar can take up as you don’t want to have the Taj Mahal of bars in your backyard if you are restricted by space,” advises Tom. For a very contemporary, streamlined look, there are modular-designer bars, such as Vondom’s Vela and Fiesta bars. These are made out of moulded polypropylene and can be illuminated internally. A more portable solution is the IceCube from Extremis. This is an illuminated ice box that comes with a seat lid so it can be used as a bench when not needed to chill drinks.
Adding accessories Of course, no outdoor bar is complete without a sink to wash out glasses and clean up spills, or a refrigerator to keep the beer and wine cool. Be sure to include these during the design phase or note them as necessary when looking at pre-built options. “Wet bars usually require a tap and sink, refrigeration and a dishwasher,” says Adrian. “When combined with an outdoor kitchen, these make a fully functional outdoor entertaining area.” In terms of trends, a lot of outdoor bars use natural stone, with the more stylish options of granite or quartz rising in popularity. Modular bars are also gaining favour. “Many outdoor

bars are adopting themes to liven up the outdoor area, which adds character to your outdoor space and can be personalised to suit your individual style,” says Cam. Fancy a G&T by the pool? A glass of pinot perhaps? Now all you need is to decide what to keep stocked in the fridge. T
Location, location The four main types of bars are by a pool (swim-up ones are fabulous!), attached to an outdoor kitchen, one set up in your outdoor area (either free-standing or set against an exterior wall) or a “feature” bar in a purposebuilt structure such as a cabana, gazebo or hut. All have their benefits and it’s essentially a matter of personal choice, budget and how much space you have. For example, if you have an outdoor kitchen and want to keep this area as the entertaining hub, place your bar alongside it. On the other hand, a resort-style “beach” bar hut in a corner of the yard spreads the fun around. Similarly, a swim-up poolside bar will give your home a holiday resort feel; however, there are some potential drawbacks to consider, such as excessive water being splashed in the bar area. To help you decide, think about how you like to entertain and who will be using the bar. Will it most likely be used by party-loving mates? Or will it be more family-friendly get-togethers? Or smaller, more intimate parties?

Electric heaters are available in a diverse range of colours, styles, temperature outputs and flexible fitting options. Recess your heater into a wall or go portable, so you can move it as needed. Strip and bar heaters are fabulous for smaller spaces as they don’t take up valuable floor space. They can be mounted flush with the ceiling or angled on a wall to create a warm, inviting space around a daybed or dining area. Some electric heaters are also waterproof, which is very handy on a rainy, windy evening.
Wood-burning fireplaces Wood fireplaces are a popular outdoor heating option because they create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Types of heat There are basically two types of heat: radiant and convection. Radiant heat is transferred from the heat source to other solid objects (such as people). Convection heat warms the air around objects. This type of heater is often fan-driven. Certain types of heat sources, for example gas fireplaces, can work using both convection and radiant heating. In open outdoor entertaining spaces, convection heating won’t be as effective as radiant heating — it’s better suited to smaller, enclosed spaces such as outdoor rooms or screened decks.

Many are on wheels so can be repositioned as needed. As an added safety feature, some models have a gas cut-off switch if the unit is knocked over. Other gas heaters can be wall-mounted and they’re available in an array of materials including marine-grade stainless steel, so will weather well in an outdoor environment.

Relaxing with a glass of wine and warming your toes by a chiminea is a great way to unwind after a busy week. Chimineas are usually forged from clay or cast iron and offer a simple charm to outdoor areas. Chimineas are extremely hot to touch so care must be taken when children are in close proximity. Contemporary firepits are a clever, modern twist to the traditional urn-shaped braziers. The modern firepit is made of steel and curved into a wide-mouthed bowl shape. On chilly winter nights, a firepit will become the hub of your entertaining space as friends gather around and relax by the fire. Firepits can be fuelled by wood, coal or gas and some have meshed covers, offering safety from floating embers, a good idea if you have young children. Some have fold-away legs for V easy storage during the warmer months.

easy storage during the warmer months. They are also portable so you can shift them around to suit the occasion — near the couch if you are planning an intimate dinner for two, or out in the open for a winter party.
Bioethanol burners These are a relatively new concept in outdoor living and are a beautiful and dramatic feature in any outdoor entertaining space. The flames spiral within the confinement of the container, creating a striking swirling effect. Burners are available in an assorted choice of vessels, from small tabletop models to stand-alone fireplaces. For the eco-savvy, ethanol is renewable energy and produces a clean-burning flame. Bioethanol fires don’t have flues or utility connections, which means they’re portable and can be used in a wide variety of outdoor and indoor environments. You can also get a little creative and have them custom-built into furniture — for example, the centre of an outdoor dining table to keep diners warm and add some ambience. Bioethanol burners are ideal for balconies, terraces, pool decks, patios, courtyards or outdoor rooms.

When using any heat source, always read and follow the attached safety instructions and if you’re unsure, check with the manufacturer. Always service your outdoor heating equipment before use in the cooler months. Safety is important, especially if you have small children, and you’ll need to consider this when
choosing an outdoor heating solution. With gas heaters, ensure there is adequate ventilation and the gas is stored appropriately. With wood fireplaces and firepits, never use petrol, kerosene or oil to start a fire. Also, always extinguish a fire, never leave it unattended, and have safety barriers in place. T
Size matters If you don’t like the mess of wood, then in-built gas fireplaces are the ultimate option. They are also a great way to save on floor space. They deliver a realistic-looking natural flame and you can choose from various fuel beds such as ceramic garden stones, rocks, coals, reflective crystals or logs. They’re usually made of stainless steel, don’t require venting, and most models can run on natural gas or propane. Electronic ignition is common and tempered-glass wind shields are an option. Column heaters are usually gaspowered and are appealing because they take up so little space. Standard models have adjustable heat outputs and a flame safeguard system for safety. Traditional patio heaters are another popular gasfuelled option. They need to be kept out of the wind to do their job well, but they have plenty of advantages: they are stable, easy to move and many come with optional extras such as lighting.

Taking it outside Large garden or small balcony, there is an array of outdoor furniture choices WORDS: Sunny de Bruyn or some time now, indoor-outdoor living has been a popular concept. And although the idea has been around for a while, in recent years, it has become about having more than just a table in the garden. It’s about creating a beautiful space outside that is just as attractive and well-coordinated as the inside of your home.
F
Under the sun Outdoor spaces are now seen as an extension of the home — hence the term “outdoor room”. This means decorating and design are just as important outdoors, and the current crop of available furniture reflects this. Even the smallest of spaces can be an outdoor oasis with some thoughtfully chosen pieces that match the size and style of the space available. Gone are the days of faded wooden settings and peeling cane chairs, products on the market now are sleek and sophisticated. They’re also up to the minute in their design and are technically superior. Made from durable, weather-resistant materials,

today’s outdoor furniture has been designed to last the test of time and resist rot, rust, fading or falling apart. Best of all, this season’s pieces are as beautiful as they are functional. The sector has truly come of age and is equally as stylish as pieces made for inside the home.
Dress me up One of the most exciting things about outdoor furniture is that the pieces themselves are just the backdrop; you can make your outdoor space as cosy, and decorated, as your interiors. Luxurious throw cushions, beautiful table runners and table cloths, and scatter cushions all add comfort and appeal. This summer, stripes are in, as are tropical and botanical prints and metallics. Changing your soft furnishings also enables you to rotate the look of your outdoor space. One day, you might go for bright, bold, summery colours (think zesty orange, hot pink and banana yellow), then for a sophisticated evening dinner party, you could swap to shades of charcoal and silver. This makes updating

“Even the smallest of spaces can be an outdoor oasis with some thoughtfully chosen pieces” your look easy and is a great way to theme your outdoor decor to your entertaining. Cushions, table cloths and napkins are the obvious staples, but you can also make an outdoor space dazzle with dining-chair covers, coloured paper lanterns, coloured string lights (such as novelty fairy lights) and even rugs.
Similarly, think about how you will use the outdoor furniture to determine what you need. Would an L-shaped lounge be better suited to an eight-seater dining setting? Or perhaps recliner lounges and a couch would be more ideal? It depends largely on how you entertain. Formal or casual? Large groups or intimate dining?
Before you buy
Material choices
Shop around to get a feel for the different types and sizes of settings, as well as the variety of materials available. You may be surprised at just how much choice there is out there. Garden centres, hardware megastores, outdoor furniture specialists, barbecue retailers and home display centres all have settings on display as they would appear in your yard. Apart from available space, one of the most important purchasing decisions is whether the material you like is suitable for both your climate and lifestyle. For example, some materials fare better in coastal conditions and the same applies for tropical or very humid areas.
Whether you want timber, stone, aluminium, steel, wrought iron or woven materials such as rattan or wicker, there’s a piece out there that suits your lifestyle. Choices include: Metal: Metal outdoor furniture is perhaps the easiest of all materials for outdoor settings. It is easy to care for, strong and highly durable. In addition, unlike timber, aluminium and other metal garden pieces of furniture don’t need to be treated or covered. They require very little maintenance and are simple to keep clean with a damp cloth. Electropolished stainless steel or aluminium look super sleek, especially when teamed with a

Word on wood When it comes to buying timber furniture, ask where it was made and where the wood was sourced from to ensure it is produced from a renewable and managed resource such as a sustainable plantation. In particular, some teak pieces come from rare or diminishing forests in places such as India and South America — so, if you’re not sure, try recycled teak. Look out for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo, which means the wood has come from certified forests that promote responsible forest management. When choosing a timber setting, ask whether the hardware fittings are made from brass or stainless steel so the joints stay rust-free. To keep wooden garden furniture looking its best, you’ll need to treat it regularly with a wood preserver. Staining or oiling it maintains the moisture in the timber and ensures it doesn’t crack or split. Storing it undercover so that it’s not permanently exposed to the elements will help lengthen its life.

Expert tip If you don’t have a permanent, weather-proof structure over your outdoor area (and erecting one isn’t an option), an easy solution is to have furniture covers fitted in the cooler months or when your outdoor settings are not in use.

On trend There are many fabulous cutting-edge designs on the market, both from local manufacturers and overseas suppliers, in exciting and innovative materials such as condensed plastics, concrete and powder-coated metals. Not surprisingly, wood is still a strong favourite, though it has a contemporary and high-tech twist these days with fantastic curves and beautiful architectural lines. Woven fibres (especially synthetic ones) are ever popular, particularly due to advances in technology that have made them super strong, incredibly durable and able to withstand harsh weather conditions such as salt, wind, sun and rain.

timber or glass tabletop. Take note if you live by the ocean, however, as salt can cause the metal to lose its lustre and even rust. Stone: Stone outdoor settings look fantastic, particularly once they start to age and discolour a little (though they can be easily cleaned with water and a pressure hose). Composite stone (such as fibreglass and crushed stone) is a great choice as it is extremely resistant to all weather conditions and is generally much lighter than natural stone. Popular natural stone choices include
granite and travertine, which are extremely durable and weather-resistant. Wood: There’s a lot more to timber outdoor furniture than just pine, though it is a tested favourite that appeals for its durability and versatility. Teak is also popular; however, you might like to opt for recycled teak as many teak pieces come from old-wood forests. Teak and kwila are two of the most suitable timbers for outdoor furniture. Teak is highly durable and weathers well. Many high-quality wooden pieces have a timber frame (such as teak) with

a subframe of EP stainless steel for extra strength and longevity. Kwila is one of the world’s most durable timbers and is termite resistant. Woven: Rattan furniture is the modern-day version of the cane furniture that was popular a few decades ago. Materials (synthetic rattan-look materials) are now more solid and hard-wearing, and the colours this season tend towards charcoals, deep chocolates and birch tones. Always ask your manufacturer if you can leave your woven furniture outside in the elements or if it needs to be under the protection of a balcony or pergola roof — some won’t survive excessive exposure to water or sun but they look beautiful and are worth the extra care. Wicker is built to last, is UV- and weather-resistant and capable of handling a wide array of temperature variations.

For a cheap way to rotate your outside decorating theme, go for cream or white cushions, tablecloths and napkins, and simply add colour for different events with candles and ribbons. For example, a fun birthday dinner party with a purple theme is easy and inexpensive to pull off with purple ribbons around napkins and tied to the backs of chairs, as well as purple candles (or good-old white candles with purple ribbons tied around them). If all of that sounds like too much work, consider just going for two different outdoor schemes: one for summer and one for winter. Summer is perfect for bold stripes and colourful florals, whereas winter is ideal for block colours such as chocolates or deep green.

Words Rachel Falzon he quintessential Australian barbecue has seen quite a transformation with the growing popularity of outdoor kitchens. These days, the barbecue includes everything — even the kitchen sink! If your barbie is in need of an update, you’re in for a treat. There’s a plethora of options on the market and plenty of accessories to boot. An outdoor kitchen is a great way to increase the living spaces of your home and is the ideal place to host a get-together. Having everything at the ready saves you plenty of time and energy running between the zones and means you’ll be able to enjoy spending time with your friends and family. “Outdoor rooms are becoming predominant in backyards all around Australia, with customers moving out of the kitchen and into their backyards to entertain friends and family,” says Ben Farley of Bar-Be School. “Increasingly, buyers are looking for built-in models with a wow factor and buyers who have done their research will go beyond the barbecue to add other convenient outdoor features.”

“Serve food on platters and wooden boards and arrange in the middle of the table. Encourage guests to help themselves,” advises Andrea Mead of Heatlie. “Not only does this look great, it saves work for the host. One of my favourite platter-style dishes is to lay lettuce leaves on the bottom and then layer with a few sun-dried tomatoes and fetta, followed by lamb cutlets straight from the barbecue. Top with a few more sun-dried tomatoes, a sprinkle of feta and a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil for a crowd-pleasing dish.”

The latest trends If you want to ensure you have the most up-todate barbecue area, you need to know what’s on trend. According to John McGran from Lifestyle BBQs, the popularity of the outdoor kitchen is going to continue through the coming summer. “It’s likely that most new homes or renovations will have a fully functional outdoor kitchen with a barbecue, sink, fridge, wok burner and even a dishwasher,” he says. John predicts that stainless-steel cabinetry and natural stone benchtops, such as granite, will continue to be in vogue this summer. “These materials represent quality and durability and they look great together,” he says. As with an indoor kitchen, you need plenty of room for food preparation, which means you need sufficient bench and storage space. This
way, you’ll be able to spend more time enjoying the company of your guests rather than being in your indoor kitchen, away from all the action.
Spoiled for choice Barbecues now come with many different options. You can, of course, buy stand-alone models but for the serious barbecue user, you may want to consider a more outdoor kitchen-style barbecue or build onto an existing barbecue with extra bench space, a sink or a fridge. You can opt to build the kitchen from scratch or there are many prebuilt versions on the market that allow you to get cooking immediately. Including an outdoor sink in your barbecue area allows you to clean up where you cook and saves you running in and out of the house to V

Position: When planning an outdoor kitchen, think about its proximity to other areas of the house, privacy and how to optimise any views. Choosing the right position will help ensure you can use your outdoor kitchen year-round. I Flexibility: Will you be entertaining large groups or using the outdoor kitchen for smaller family meals? Do you require a lounge area as well as a place to eat? A flexible layout that can adapt to both is ideal. I Budget: Set a realistic and well-researched budget. As well as building materials, appliances and a barbecue, consider floor coverings, shading and furniture. I Built-in or modular: There are many module-based systems on the market that are cost-efficient and look fabulous. However, if you’re aiming for a customised space, it can pay to engage a builder who will design and construct an appropriate outdoor kitchen for your home. Information supplied by Heatlie.

the inside kitchen. Many outdoor kitchen-style barbecues are also equipped with cabinetry, which means you can keep all the necessities and accessories close at hand. If you don’t have the room or the need for an entire outdoor kitchen, a stand-alone gas barbecue or a simple charcoal barbecue are still popular options. If you’re really tight on space, you can find tabletop grills and compact portable barbecues that can be packed away when not in use and can even be taken out for picnics.
Choosing add-ons To ensure you’re able to whip up something quickly, you may wish to consider a wok burner, or perhaps you’d like a side burner so you can use your pots outdoors. Ben Farley says that with the rise of television cooking shows, serious barbecue lovers will start turning to different cooking methods. From smokers to grills, there are many ways you can experiment with cooking in the great outdoors. “Smoking is a simple technique, which infuses meat with flavours,” explains Ben. “Most barbecue-accessory shops sell smoke boxes and aromatic wood chips. You simply select the flavour such as hickory or apple wood, which are very popular.” John McGran says if you really want to impress your friends this summer, you need to invest in a beer-can chicken roaster. This inexpensive barbecue accessory will give your chicken a whole new flavour and is sure to be a talking point. From roasting racks, rotisseries and egg cookers to cast-iron prawn cookers and sizzle
plates, there are plenty of barbecue accessories to choose from, with many readily available at your local barbecue or hardware store.
Crowd pleasers If you tend to barbecue for bigger crowds, a good-quality barbecue isn’t the only thing you need. With some careful preparation, being the family cook can be a pleasure, suggests Andrea Mead from Heatlie. Andrea’s first tip is to plan the menu in advance. “If you’re going to need large quantities of meat, poultry or seafood, it pays to order ahead with your butcher or fishmonger. Remember, a well-planned event reduces the risk of a badly executed day.” “Entertaining for a crowd isn’t the time to try out new recipes,” she adds. “Have a go-to collection of fail-safe dishes that are everyday favourites and then jazz them up with something a little different. Fold quinoa through a green leafy salad and sprinkle in a touch of the Moroccan spice blend Za’atar or add roasted butternut pumpkin to a Caesar salad. “Cater for all tastes,” continues Andrea. “Ask for any special dietary requirements or allergies when invitations go out or when you personally invite guests, and don’t forget those who are vegetarian or glutenintolerant. When it comes to young children, don’t overcomplicate things — you can’t go past sausages wrapped in bread and a simple dressing-free salad.” So what’s for dinner tonight at your place? Fancy a roast, grill, stir-fry or something smoked? You can do it all in comfort on your state-of-the-art barbecue. T

Fire it up! Impress dinner guests with the taste and aroma of home-cooked wood-fired fare WORDS: Kate McKee ost Australian households have a barbecue, but if you’re looking for something a bit different for your entertaining area, why not try a wood-fired oven? Wood-fired ovens are easy to use, look great and allow you to cook restaurant-quality fare in the comfort of your own backyard. Wood-fired ovens can be built-in, freestanding or portable and come in a range of sizes to suit all applications. If you’re after a modest addition for a moderately sized patio or verandah, a single-shelved pizza oven might be for you, or one fixed with wheels so you can store it away when not in use. If you’re looking to cook for large crowds, a traditional standalone or built-in option might be more suitable.
M
Variety of styles There are myriad styles of wood-fired ovens on the market today. These include the more traditional options sporting the rustic look, with clay, stone and brick-made varieties on offer. Or, for those who prefer a more modern look, there are models that feature sleek stainless

steel or contemporary powder-coated colours. Many manufacturers also offer the benefit of customisation if your heart is set on a particular style, shape or finish. If you’re handy, you might prefer to buy a DIY kit but if you opt to go down this route, first ensure everything is included and the instructions are clear. A wood-fired oven of any size or style can also act as a talking — and gathering — point when you have guests over. The glow of embers at night is always a drawcard, as is the mouthwatering aroma of wood-fired cooking. Then there is the bonus of having an additional open-flame heat source in the cooler months, completing the full sensory experience.
Enjoy the benefits One of the main benefits of incorporating a woodfired oven into your outdoor setting is the unique wood-fired flavour it gives to your cooking. When you hear the term wood-fired, the image of pizza usually comes to mind but there are many more culinary creations you can experience with a little imagination. Anything from a roast dinner to baked bread can have that unique wood-fired flavour, and you can even
wow your guests with some decadent desserts. Some more good news for those who loathe cleaning after a big cook up is that wood-fired ovens are easy to clean. Because the internal temperature of a wood-fired oven reaches such high points, it self-cleans by burning off excess food, grease and bugs. All you need to do is sweep out the cool ashes with a bristled brush and pan. So why not get your very own wood-fired oven and start cooking up a storm? T
Other options Although pizza ovens traditionally use wood as a fuel source, there are some other options you might like to consider, especially if it’s only pizzas you’re interested in cooking. Gas-fuelled pizza ovens do heat up faster than traditional wood-fired ovens so if you’re not one to wait or plan ahead, gas might be the way to go. You can also get special attachments that can be fitted to your barbecue, enabling you to cook pizzas for guests who want more than just barbecued prawns and snags. And if you’re really short on space, there are compact tabletop electric pizza ovens.

The Melbourne Fire Brick Company specialises in the supply and construction of wood-fired ovens, which range from beguiling, brick-built ovens to more modern, though no less charming, pre-cast ovens. The company’s pre-cast wood-fired oven has a dome that is made of one solid piece of refractory concrete rather than individual bricks.
“The pre-cast oven comes complete, which means the customer doesn’t have to lift a finger,” says company owner, Ben Guilford. “We deliver and install the oven, leaving it ready to be fired up straight away.” Another popular choice is The Melbourne Fire Brick Company’s Italian-style brick-oven DIY kit. “We have a lot of customers who want to build their own authentic brick oven but prefer to work to a tried-and-tested design and have the hard work of cutting the bricks done for them,” explains Ben. “For those customers, we have our pre-cut brick oven kits, which come with all of the bricks cut to size, as well as the formwork and special tools required to assemble the kit. put it together like a big jigsaw puzzle.” Ben, who completed a double degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Monash University, drew on his technical knowledge to create a superior brick-oven kit. During the design phase, the oven was fully 3D-CAD modelled to determine the optimal size and shape of each brick and to achieve the tightest-possible joints on the inside face of the oven. “The end result is an oven that is easy to assemble, looks great and, most importantly, works well,” says Ben. If you have your own design in mind, The Melbourne Fire Brick Company can also supply you with all the materials you need to build your dream oven. This includes fire
bricks, high-temperature insulation and refractory mortar. Whatever option you choose, there is no denying there is something about cooking with fire that draws people in, taking us back to simpler times. It also engages people; when you throw a wood-fired pizza party, it gives everyone an opportunity to participate, making their own pizzas just the way they like. T

It is all here in one unit.”
DESIGN SOURCE
Due to the ceramic construction and tight gasket seal, the Saffire will slow cook for up to 12 hours on one load of charcoal. With less airflow than an average barbecue, moisture is maintained in your food, with minimal shrinkage of meats. The ceramic glaze exterior is also much cooler than a steel grill and, therefore, much safer. The internal temperature can be controlled from 200-700°C, simply by adjusting the airflow from the stainless-steel top and bottom dampers. Once the charcoal has been preheated, close the lid and reach 700°C in just 20 seconds. The Saffire Grill comes with many features.
The high-quality stainless-steel grill has a hinged door built in, which allows access to the fire without removing the cooking grill. Plus, the cart, band and springs are all made from the highest-grade stainless steel. Unique to the Saffire Grill is the Smoking Chip Feeder. This allows you to add your favourite smoking wood chips to the charcoal fire without having to remove the cooking grill or open the lid. With the Saffire Grill, you get three cookers in one — a grill, a smoker and a pizza oven — at a fraction of the cost of buying three separate appliances. You also have a choice of two colours: Onyx Black and Jasper Red. T

The majority of Bamboo Habitat’s range is now smoked using traditional firing methods. This gives the bamboo screens a wonderful earthy scent and a scorched woody-brown tone — the perfect natural backdrop for art, water features or plants. The popular Moku screens are comprised of 35mm full bamboo poles and 35mm sculpted hardwood pieces for a decorative detail. This style is available in a height of 1.8m. All bamboo screens are strung internally with 3mm galvanised wire, which ensures

they stay structurally sound for around 15 years, even near saltwater or in sandy and windy environments. Both sturdy and stylish, the screens can be used in a wide range of applications and the expert staff at Bamboo Habitat will be happy to recommend the best screening solution for your needs. For customers in the Sydney metropolitan area and on the NSW South Coast, Bamboo Habitat offers an installation service. For those unable to collect their screens from the company’s Sydney warehouse, door-todoor delivery can be arranged. To complement your new bamboo screening, you will need the right decor, which is where Bamboo Habitat’s sister business, Tropical Habitat, steps in. It is

Spring has sprung Spring-i-fy your garden, adding colour and fragrance, by following these simple tips
L
ook around and you’ll quickly spot that spring has already sprung. Of course, every season is special from a gardener’s viewpoint but there’s something about spring’s rush of warmth, growth and fragrance that makes everyone feel wonderful. Unless, of course, your garden is sadly season-less. But that’s easily fixed and here’s how. The first thing to do is work out what it is about springtime plants that you love the most. Is it the colour of bulbs? The show of blossoms bursting from bare branches or the sharp hit of fragrance as you walk down the street? Or maybe it’s drifts of fallen magnolia petals on the ground? Our response to seasonal change is primitive and hooked into sensual triggers, and these triggers can be put to brilliant use.

Once you’ve sat down and worked out what they are, you’re well on the way to spring-ifying your garden. Perhaps the two most powerful springevoking plant groups are the bulbs and barebranched trees covered in blossom. Let’s start with the trees. Use this spring to do a stocktake of what’s on show either in your neighbourhood or online. Magnolia, apple, pear, plum, cherry, quince — there are many wonderful species to choose from, some ornamental and others with the added bonus of producing edible fruit in the months to come. Some, like the Jury magnolia, have been collected and expertly bred purely for their latewinter and early-spring beauty and fragrance. Others may not be as showy but they might
offer foliage colour later in the year. Once you’ve made your choice, the trick is to find a way to introduce these trees into the garden so that they’ll work year-round. Closer to the ground, spring bulbs are packages of colour, programmed to kick into action below ground and emerge with foliage then flowers and often fragrance when the days turn warm. Daffodils and jonquils are ambassadors of spring. So whether you plant a few with some primroses into a pot beside the front door, or cast hundreds across a lawn and spend the day digging them in, the result is the same — pure spring. And for the complete spring look, be sure to combine both. Bulbs planted beneath blossom trees are an unbeatable crowd pleaser. You can’t go wrong. T

paving has been replaced by timber decking. Jenny loves plants and wanted as much garden as possible. This can be hard to achieve when a pool takes up so much ground and access has to be maintained around it. To create further planting opportunities, I designed four square plinths for the corners of the pool. On each one stands an oversized fibreglass bowl. Uplights, both in and underneath, reveal the organic shape of the bowls and the softness of the contained planting. The two bowls placed at the front of the pool contain Cycas revoluta (sago palm) and Thymus serpyllum (carpet thyme). In the bowls on the rear plinths there are Dracaena marginata under-planted with Carex morrowii ‘Aurea Variegata’. Growing against the back wall behind these pots is Trachelospermum jasminoides (Chinese star jasmine). The colours of the hard surfaces are muted and calming — deep brownish grey for the rendered walls and warm grey, courtesy of the travertine pavers — which provide texture and richness. Entrance to the service area is via an archway, beyond which a pot holding a lime tree and herbs gives the illusion that the garden continues. For continuity, I extended the new paving into this area. The travertine water feature is another significant

occasion I chose a more symmetrical layout in keeping with the era of the home, a 1920s brick-and-weatherboard house. As it has two storeys, the house does have quite a strong visual presence above the back garden. Additionally, an existing wall concealing storage and services in the back quarter of the garden was going to be retained; it was symmetrical and would form the backdrop to the pool. A key feature of the design, one that is beautifully suited to the character of the home, is the new verandah. A flat-roofed pergola had previously spanned the back of the house, covering a large area of brick paving. The space under the pergola was confined by too many posts which were located too close to the house. Now the roomy verandah is sheltered by a pitched roof and the

The area needed to be weatherproofed and the style needed to marry well with the modest cottage. Many of my designs are asymmetrical, but on this
