Sure, it’s easy to say that we love ourselves We will spend hundreds of dollars buying things to feel good Yet, when it comes to action, we haven't really checked in with ourselves in meaningful ways that make us feel truly cared for and loved Some of us even struggle with making ourselves a priority at all Instead of trying to love ourselves with more of the same, here are some ways you can love yourself better

Understanding Wellness, Self-Care and Self-Soothing

Wellness is more than just the absence of illness Wellness is the overall state of thriving, not just surviving Self-care is the intentional, ongoing practice of activities that strengthen all domains of our lives including our mental, emotional, and physical health

When we are triggered by a threatening situation or just under long term stress, our hypervigilant survival mode turns on. At that point, we need self-soothing activities to turn off our anxiety and allow us to relax and be calm, even if it’s just temporarily.

Self-care activities include eating and sleeping well, exercising, regularly visiting the doctor, and attending therapy

Self-soothing activities are external and engage the senses like listening to music, bubble baths, getting a massage, or eating your favorite food or drink

Elevate Your Self-Care to Self-Love

Love is not selfish. It is an intentional practice of activities that remind us of a deep level of acceptance and joy of who we are, just as we are

Self-Love is the work we should do daily to keep this core fire protected and burning. The heat or energy given off, not only powers us, but those whose lives we touch as well

So, if you’re a person who can't seem to do this kind of work for yourself just yet but jump at the chance to give your best to family and friends, start by practicing baby steps of self-love. You will show up better for your yourself and for those you care about

Try These Nurturing and Protective Self-Love Actions

1.) Daily Check-Ins

Take your mental and emotional temperature. You can do this once or throughout the day. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being my best self ever, "How is my mental health today? How are my emotions today?" You can track your answers in a journal over time and monitor your progress

2.) Let Go of Old Negative Thinking, & Fall in Love with Who You Are and Who You Are Becoming

Challenge negative thinking by replacing it with a positive thought. You are a unique being, a masterpiece made beautiful each day by the intertwining of your strengths and imperfections. You are great in this day because it takes all you are going thorough to become your best self Practice loving ALL that makes you YOU

3.) Turn Your Morning Hygiene into Spa Time

The word 'Spa’ is a Latin acronym for the phrase ‘Salus per Aquam’, meaning ‘health from water’ Turn your morning shower routine into a healing time with water Start 15 - 20 minutes earlier than usual and take your time to engage your senses Notice the feel and temperature of the water, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and enjoy the scent of your soap Take the time to appreciate this space in your day for caring for your body

Spa Time for Your Mind Too

While you are cleansing your body, cleanse your mind as well Incorporate these two helpful mind exercises as you wash:

Reflect on 3 things you are grateful for

Gratitude is a grounding activity that centers us and helps remove things that are not important We can then focus on the things that truly bring us joy and other emotions that hold their value for a lifetime

Think of 3 things that you need/want for the day

Take notice throughout your day of things big and small that make you smile Over time you will learn how to hold space for the things you are waiting for while noticing and appreciating the things that bring you joy along the way.

5) Engage in What Makes You Happy on a Daily Basis

Make yourself Chief Officer of your own joy Don't put the responsibility of your happiness on anyone else Make a list of things that fill your heart with good emotions and be responsible for engaging in at least one thing on that list daily This is your consistent internal source of joy The happiness others bring may ebb and flow, but you can keep yourself stable

Don’t just talk about what you want, make a list and be about the business of doing something small each day towards your life goals

8) POWER UP YOUR LANGUAGE

Use your words like power tools - with precision Fewer words carry more weight Say what you mean and mean what you say This can decrease unproductive discussions and increase your peace of mind

9) DEFINE YOURSELF FOR WHO YOU ARE TODAY AND WHO YOU WANT TO BECOME IN THE FUTURE.

Who are you? Apart from being someone’s sister, mother, friend, co-worker, neighbor, etc. Are you pleased with your answer? If not, write down things you need to change to be better.

Who do you want to be? Write down the things you aspire to be and what you might need to achieve those goals Do some research if you are unsure

10) STOP CHASING SMOKE: LOVINGLY RELEASE YOURSELF FROM THE OPINION OF OTHERS

Seeking others' approval is so 2018. If you are determined to gain success, you can't worry about what others think.

Maybe you’ve heard people say, "Life begins at..." and often the age varies, 30, 40, 50 or 60 What does that really mean? Think about it You've been through so much, for so long with so many One day, you wake up and realize that you no longer need to care what other people think of you and your life decisions You finally let go of all the fears of not being accepted or approved by others and choose to approve yourself When you reach that point, Your Life Has Begun It's a moment of tremendous freedom in your thinking and a greater sense of control over your life So, what age will life begin for you?

You may need to shop around to find the best fit, but remember you are worth it

Don't let the melanin myth keep you from protecting your skin.

As the temperatures start to rise and the sun shines a little brighter, it's essential to make sunscreen a part of your daily skincare routine. While there is a popular misconception that people with darker skin tones don't need sunscreen, this could not be further from the truth. Black women, just like everyone else, need to protect their skin from the harmful effects of the sun In this article, we'll discuss the reasons why black women should incorporate sunscreen into their spring and summer skincare regimen and the many benefits that come with it

The Melanin Myth

One common myth about darker skin tones is that the presence of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, provides adequate protection against the sun's harmful UV rays While it's true that melanin does offer some protection, it's not enough to prevent the sun's damaging effects In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation states that melanin provides a sun protection factor (SPF) of only 4-15, depending on one's skin tone, which is far below the recommended SPF 30 or higher

Here are some tips for Black women to build confidence and overcome imposter syndrome in the workplace:

Recognize and Challenge Negative Thoughts: The first step in overcoming imposter syndrome is to recognize when negative thoughts are creeping in Pay attention to any thoughts or feelings that suggest you are not good enough or don’t belong in your current role Once you identify these thoughts, challenge them with evidence of your accomplishments and past successes

Dr April Bee is a certified Wellness Coach, author, and advocate for healing Dr Bee's empathetic, educational, and empowering approach helps her clients improve their mental and physical wellness, particularly after traumatic experiences.

Using transformational speaking techniques and her own experiences, Dr. Bee opens the minds and hearts of her patients to promote change and personal growth She believes in providing a platform and space for the community to express themselves individually and collectively, creating innovative approaches to address trauma and share joy

One of Dr Bee's wellness projects is the Breathe Project, which highlights the experiences of Black men in America and provides a platform for them to express themselves After just two months, Dr. Bee noticed significant personal growth and evolution among the men participating.

Dr Bee's genuine and authentic personality creates relatability and comfort for her patients, reminding them that their trauma does not define them and that they are enough In her book Mama, What's Cookin', Dr Bee shares her story about her relationship with her mother and its impact on her life

Through her writing and wellness events, from yoga to poetry, Dr Bee strives to create a community that reflects her goals of healing and connection She provides a space for individuals to freely express themselves and access the healing necessary to overcome traumatic experiences.

What are the particular areas in your area of expertise that you believe Black Women should prioritize to boost their mental health and well-being?

Healing True, intentional, authentic, and consistent healing through therapy We unfortunately can’t mask deep wounds It’s like putting tons of foundation over a pimple–it will still protrude through I believe in spiritual teachers, meaning, there are things that will happen in our lives over and over that may ease up once we fully address it and make adequate space for it to heal If not, it will stick out in everything It will show up in our health, our relationships, our friendships, our decisions, our profession, our parenting, and our life as a whole In some instances, we may become numb to it and see it as “just a part of who we are ” In reality, there’s a greater version of ourselves that is just waiting for the awareness and acknowledgment of our bruises and wounds and would like true triaging

Another priority is nutrition. We have to feed our body in the way we would like it to function We cannot put 87 gas in a diesel truck We are powerful with big ideas and greater productions Therefore, we must feed our body in a way that is plentiful, long-lasting and fruitful!

A third priority should be our circle Our social relationships are so essential as Black women, which is why we should not take them for granted in any way The truth is we shouldn’t be navigating life on our own, and we should navigate life with people who give you full, authentic companionship Learning how to be a great friend helped me to attract the friends I’ve always needed and desired My friends have helped me to develop into the woman I am–far beyond the person I’ve imagined to be. This is the greatest life hack or life hiccup for us as Black women We can often let past hurts keep us from other women who could bless us beyond measure, AND, we also hold on to “friends” who have been there since day one but haven’t helped us to grow By being present and clear on who we are, it will help us to be in the emotional capacity to align with the people who are most fruitful for each season of life

How important is venting and going to therapy? How much is too much?

Personally, I don’t think there is a capacity for venting I think in our community we have been conditioned to be uncomfortable with the raw experiences that one may express, and so a lot of us bottle in our pain and pretend as if it is not bothering us If you have the right person, and they are in the right headspace, they can probably listen to our boyfriend blues for a while The intentional adjustment comes into play when we determine where to vent, how to vent, and the next steps post-vent

Where we vent is essential to understand While I don’t mind seeing someone share their entire life story on Facebook, I do worry that Facebook is public and opens up to people saying hateful comments to a person in a vulnerable space Therefore, the issue is not sharing–it’s the discernment on how people may receive and possibly place more hurt upon one ’ s situation Additionally, we may vent to friends or family members who don’t have the capacity to give us what we are looking for We may be looking for advice, or conversational feedback, or just a space to blow steam If the recipient does not know how to give that to us appropriately, then they may not be a great person to vent to How we vent is essential to understand because we have to allow space in making sure that the person is ready to receive and in the capacity to take in such information Oftentimes it may seem like a lot if a person loads on us and has not considered where our mental space is

A great concern about venting is making sure that we implement next steps post-venting Sometimes, it may be difficult for someone to listen to an experience several times in a row and no action has been taken. I do admit, some traumas are a lot harder to get through than others Therefore, it may take several repeated conversations to even begin the process of taking steps towards anything Nonetheless, there comes a point where someone may hear the same story for about two years straight, three times a week, and start to become a little worried

This is the beauty of therapy–a professional who can listen to the same experiences several times and implement tools to move towards healing This is also not a personal relationship, so it doesn’t wear down the integrity of a friendship or relationship and can allow opportunities for other other dynamics in our social relationships A therapist also gives space for our social group to be there for us in a balanced manner instead of taking on the entire weight of our experience It’s not that they do not want to, but instead they may not have the tools to. Having a balance of great social groups and therapy can bring the personal support aspect of navigating hard times while receiving professional therapeutic tools that can lead us into our next steps I must share this important note: your friends are not your therapist Even your friends who are therapists cannot be your therapist Your therapist is not your friend They can share friendly attributes, but they cannot be your home girl Finding a balance of both will give the love and healthiness needed

What makes you most proud of Black Women?

I am mostly proud of our resilience There is nothing like being a Black woman While being the most highly-achieved population, our achievement comes with a lot of unfavorable sacrifices We have delayed experiences of a romantic relationship We navigate difficult friendships We run into severe health risks due to stress and disparities in healthcare

We carry the weight of being a caretaker in all aspects while still somehow expected to produce outstanding results professionally. We find ways to balance being a wife/mother while chasing our dreams We experience pointed scrutiny while exploring our identity or navigating grief of our trauma We are promoted in workplaces to only sacrifice our mental and social health, and sometimes our bodies, for greater praise We are forced to wear a mask in nearly all spaces of our lives–sometimes even around our family and friends I share these sentiments not as a pity party, but as recognition towards what we endure on a daily basis Nonetheless, we still get it done. Wellness is so important to share with Black women because I want us to understand that no one should determine our well-being for us We need to leave that job, even if it pays six figures We need to say, “ no, I can’t take on your issues today as I am not in the head space ”

Do you have any books, guides, classes, or courses to aid Black Women in accomplishing their objectives?

I started a workshop in 2020 called “#thisisMYbeauty” where I would photograph women accentuating an action or characteristic that makes them feel beautiful. The focus was to step outside of the masks of beauty that the world has placed on us, and step into the God-ordained beauty that is deep within From that place, we radiate brightly and boldly through all of the spaces of our lives This workshop focuses on college-aged young adults, as well as the “establishedworking” population

Additionally, I have also created the SASSE Workshop to talk about how to rely less on how “ sassy ” (outward appearance) we are, and focus on how “SASSE” (inward reflection) we can be I seek to launch this workshop again in the upcoming year, so if anyone is interested in having this at your next retreat, conference, or day events, please contact me at april@draprilbee com

Negotiation is a crucial skill for anyone looking to advance their career, but for Black women, it can be particularly challenging We face unique obstacles when it comes to negotiating salaries and promotions due to the intersection of race and gender Research shows that Black women are often paid less than their white male and female counterparts and are less likely to be promoted to senior leadership roles

So, how can Black women navigate these challenges and negotiate for the salaries and promotions they deserve? Here are a few tips:

1 Do Your Research: Before entering into any negotiation, it’s important to do your research and gather as much information as possible This includes researching industry standards for salaries and promotions and understanding the specific responsibilities and expectations of the role you are negotiating for

2 Build Your Confidence: Negotiating can be intimidating, but it’s important to remember that you bring value to the table Build your confidence by reflecting on your past accomplishments and successes, and by preparing talking points and practicing your negotiation skills

3 Be Assertive: Studies have shown that women are often penalized for being assertive in negotiations, but it’s important to stand firm and advocate for yourself Be clear about your goals and what you are seeking in the negotiation

4 Focus on the Benefits: When negotiating for a salary or promotion, it’s important to focus on the benefits that you bring to the company This includes highlighting your skills, experience, and accomplishments, and how they can contribute to the success of the organization.

5 Seek Support: Negotiating can be stressful, so it’s important to seek support from mentors, colleagues, or professional organizations They can provide advice, encouragement, and even help you practice your negotiation skills

It’s important for Black women to recognize that negotiating for salaries and promotions can be challenging, but it’s not impossible By doing your research, building your confidence, being assertive, focusing on the benefits, and seeking support, you can successfully navigate negotiations and achieve the salary and promotion you deserve

What Self-Love Looks Like for Black Women

What does self-love look like?

For me, self-love is about acknowledging the fact that I can’t do everything I’m not super powerful I do have some unique qualities, and some skills, but I also have weaknesses, and I’m learning to be okay with my weaknesses My imperfections mean that I’m human They mean that I’m real So, I’m learning to appreciate those things that are not perfect about myself Acknowledging that you can’t do everything is important You have to allow yourself that grace I think we’re now beginning to see how this "strong Black woman" facade is negatively affecting us We say yes far too often and take on way too much and it can impact the way we feel about ourselves

Self-love for me is mostly about finding time away from all my projects to focus on myself or spend time with my family.

It’s easy to forget to do the kind of things I enjoy doing for myself, like chilling out and watching a good movie or meditating Maybe I want to work on a puzzle tonight instead of taking care of someone else Maybe I want to take a bubble bath Those things are important too! Some of them might seem very luxurious, but you do so much daily, you must dedicate some time to yourself I make sure that every day I practice just being with myself, talking to myself, learning to know myself Because we spend 24/7 with ourselves, it’s easy to assume that we know who we are, but if you don’t stop the noise and have a frank conversation with yourself, you never get to know yourself

And I think that getting to know yourself is the biggest act of self-love.

I practice taking time out Practice makes perfect. In the same way that there are activities that you do every day to take care of your body, (for instance, showering, brushing your teeth) you have to dedicate daily time to taking care of your self-empowerment Even if you just read affirmations for five minutes every day, or spend some time in front of the mirror giving yourself a pep talk, focus on yourself daily If you do it here and there, it doesn’t really work Take a little time every day just to recap what you’ve done during the day Think about what brought you joy, because self-love is closely connected to Black joy. It’s important to develop the ability to recognize what makes us happy and to make sure that we include those moments of happiness in our daily lives.

If you had asked me in my twenties or thirties what I would have wanted to do with my free time, I would have answered, “I’d like to go out, enjoy myself, travel the world, live in Ibiza, go on holidays." In my forties, I just want to spend some time appreciating myself a bit more I want to be 100% comfortable with myself I may not have the right shoes, but hey, I’m still walking, and I’m still alive, and I’m still blessed I’ve still got friends and family

For me, a big part of self-love is about being kind to myself, and working exceptionally hard, but playing even harder.

I like to take my foot off the gas occasionally, get in my car and go for nice long drive on my own and with my music blaring Allowing my brain to not think for a moment is so important for me

There are times where you’ll go, “Oh my God, I’m so down today ” It’s important to recognize those moments where you need to be still. That, for me, is the greatest act of self-love

We are constantly on a balance beam, trying to balance work and social life and relationships. Often, the only time that you probably get on your own is when you’re commuting I can’t emphasize enough the importance of giving your head the space to be still, and being comfortable with that stillness Take time to actually think, “Do I like my life? Do I like what I’ve got? Do I like what’s in my own head, my own thoughts?”

I think, for me, that was the catalyst of my own self-love journey Just actually sitting back and listening to the thoughts that were going through my mind, listening to the way I was speaking to myself I mean, wow This newfound ability to sit still and listen to myself transformed the way I was thinking day to day, moment by moment

But as a Black woman, it’s pretty difficult to do that We can lie to each other, but I’d rather not It’s really difficult to do that. So a huge suggestion that I always say to people is, get a journal, or a book, and write down your thoughts. Do this on a daily basis. And in a year’s time, go back and read through your own thoughts Don’t read it the day after, read it in a month’s time and see what your thoughts are because that helped me That will really show you where your head’s actually at I’ve picked some things that are easy to do. Like meditation, that’s free I like a bit of a freebie Think about them as things that will help

How do you maintain self-love? Practice!

If you start to make it part of your daily routine, it’s hard to miss the cues reminding you to take a time out for yourself If, for example, you make daily affirmations part of your routine, you’ll find yourself saying them each time you look in the mirror

It only takes a short time to form a habit, and self-love can become one of your better habits if you start making it a ritual.

Black Mental Wellness Corp was established by four dedicated clinical psychologists with a shared passion for addressing mental health and wellness issues within the Black community It all began in 2016 when Nicole L Cammack recognized the glaring need for readily available information, particularly for the Black community while working with active-duty service members on a military base Cammack joined forces with Danielle R Busby, Dana L Cunningham, and Jessica S Henry, forming an executive team committed to breaking down the barriers and challenging the stigma surrounding mental health

Offering a wide range of services such as corporate webinars and training, culturally inclusive training, workshops, retreats, curriculum development, and consultation services, Black Mental Wellness Corp aims to make a real difference

Their mission is to provide culturally sensitive educational resources on mental and behavioral health topics, promote diversity among mental health professionals by facilitating training opportunities, and work tirelessly to decrease the mental health stigma within the Black community

Driven by these experiences the team at Black Mental Wellness Corp has developed a comprehensive list of "intentional" and accessible resources that are available free of charge Their website offers valuable resources such as mental health disorder fact sheets, wellness strategies, and a wealth of information on websites, apps, and podcasts dedicated to mental health and wellness

In addition to making resources accessible, the team of licensed clinical psychologists is committed to increasing the representation of Black professionals within the mental health field by creating training opportunities for those interested in pursuing careers in the industry

Each of these four women brings their unique perspectives, education, and specialized training to the table, forming a formidable force in addressing mental health and wellness issues specific to the Black community

We each have different journeys which led us on our journey to becoming psychologists I will speak to the origins of Black Mental Wellness specifically It was the experiences of women, specifically the experiences of Black women, which inspired the concept and development of Black Mental Wellness

As a practicing psychologist, I was working with Black Women on a military base, who were in therapy While the women sought therapy, they still had reservations about the process and were struggling to accept that what they were feeling and experiencing (e g

symptoms of depression, anxiety, or trauma) was related to a mental health concern or disorder This was particularly true as many of the clients compared what they were feeling (e g , overwhelmed, hopeless, tearful) with what they were still able to do and accomplish (e g , success in career, parenting responsibilities, spouse) I often heard, “I can ’ t be depressed if I am ” (fill in the blank; a leader, a mother, taking care of my family)

I attempted to describe the different ways that depression manifests in Black women specifically, and I wanted to provide handouts that further detailed depression in Black women At the time, it was nearly impossible to find handouts and/or resources that were available to the everyday person, around this topic I found 2 articles published by Ebony Magazine to help explain depression, the superwoman syndrome, and the impact of the Strong Black Woman phenomenon on Black women s mental health, I often used these articles to start conversations around mental health in Black women Using these articles served as a launching pad for many women to really understand what they were experiencing They started to buy into therapy as a space to help them navigate their challenges and to improve their mood I saw women feeling seen and heard in the therapy room, many for the first time It was during this period of my career, that I knew that my purpose was beyond therapy and I became passionate around creating a platform to provide culturally inclusive mental health resources to help Black people see themselves in mental health, to increase access to mental health resources, and to increase access to mental health services in the Black community Representation has always been integral in success of Black Mental Wellness I partnered with other Black women who shared my same passion to further develop Black Mental Wellness and to shift the field We are lucky to have each other on this team, as we work together to shift the narrative of mental health in the Black community

At what point did you initially realize that you had a passion for aiding others in achieving their wellness goals?

I've always known that if I had to work 40 hours a week, I wanted to spend it doing something that actually made a difference in this world I walked into college at 17 chose majors not based on how much money i would make but on whether or not I would like I wasted my time or not when I clocked out at the end of the workday After working for the State of California and various counties the last 16 years I realized I was not able to help people be well By the time they reached me in these systems it was too late I also came to realize that basically EVERYONE needs wellness I started thinking maybe if more people outside these systems got more wellness maybe eventually, we will have less people in these systems So, in June 2022 I left my government job and poured my time into my side hustle so to speak which I have had on the side since 2017 Now I spend 100% of my time trying to keep people well or spread wellness to prevent people from entering the more severe systems I previously directed

What distinguishes self-care from soul care?

Oh, I am so happy you asked this question! This is a great question. Soul care IS self-care. Let me tell you why. Soul care is thought of as tending to spiritual and emotional needs. This is accomplished through activities that allow you to feel connected to a God or a higher spirit or a greater since of one ' s own inner wisdom Most people associate self-care with tending to physical needs such as getting enough sleep, having a healthy diet, or the more luxurious side of things such as a spa day or a relaxing massage While this is correct, selfcare is actually much more! Self-care is taking care of all of YOU!

Self-care includes physical, spiritual, emotional, mental everything! Everything includes our soul but I would say ESPECIALLY our soul Our soul is the essence of who we are Thus, we would have to care for our souls in order to truly care for ourselves There is no way to separate these aspects out For example, if someone is not getting enough sleep it can make them forgetful (mental) and irritable (emotions/feelings) and decrease their engagement in usual activities (physical)

What makes you most proud of Black Women?

I'm proud of black women for being resilient and strong in the face of adversity They are trailblazers in every field, from business to the arts, and continue to break down barriers and inspire others with their courage and determination They have taken on difficult and uncomfortable conversations to ensure that their voices are heard, and their struggles are acknowledged They have shown that no matter the circumstance, they can persevere and remain focused on the task at hand In short, black women are a shining example of what it means to be strong and passionate leaders in our society

Entrepreneurship can be a lonely road, but having a support system of like-minded individuals can make all the difference in achieving success Seek out mentorship and guidance from those who have already traveled the path you're embarking on Attend networking events, join industry associations, and engage with your peers on social media

As a former business coach, I've witnessed numerous clients struggle with mental health while managing their businesses Many faced common challenges such as difficulties with their children, relationship drama, and financial stress Instead of addressing these issues openly, their anxiety manifested in other ways, such as missing payments, avoiding assignments, and skipping appointments This often led to clients leaving the program, feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope

Initially, I attributed this to poor money management and lack of work ethic

However, I realized that for many black women entrepreneurs, the mental strain of balancing life, relationships, finances, and their dreams was simply too much As personal issues arose, their businesses and creative pursuits suffered They were hiding, and not healing their businesses.

I observed a pattern of Black women in business discussing their experiences online, often abandoning their ventures for "mental health" reasons Some would return after a hiatus, attempting the same approach with no improvement Others embraced a religious mindset, relying on faith instead of understanding the practical aspects of running a business. Mental health, accepting guidance, and selfawareness often hindered their success

In recent years, I've seen a surge in women pursuing careers as holistic healers, life coaches, and advocates for those experiencing trauma and abuse When asked about their motivations, many cited their personal experiences with trauma. While they had a genuine desire to help others, they lacked the necessary education or resources to offer effective support. When confronted with the topic of accountability, these clients often left the program.

We as black women, we should be celebrating our existence and our achievements each and every day We are special, unique and powerful We need to remind ourselves of this on a daily basis The world sometimes does not see us as equals and women in general get the short end of the stick when it comes to equality issues It's time for us to start loving ourselves, like yesterday

Self love is a journey, not a destination

What have you done for YOU lately? Grab your inner Janet, and get in control Harness the drivers seat because self love is a journey, not a destination We will never be perfect, and we will always be growing We are not our pain, past and we are certainly not our mistakes or trauma Just as if we are comparing lifes journey to a cross country trip, we are prepared, we have a guide, we have an emergency plan And if things do not go as planned, we stop, rest and get back on the road

If we can learn to accept ourselves for who we are today--not who we were 5 years ago--or even better yet 30 years ago (because let's face it: most people change drastically during their lifetime), then maybe we won't spend so much time worrying about how others see us or what they think of our imperfections or failures because in reality those things don't matter at all!

Black women have to fight for their equality every day

Eveny day, we are fighting for our equality They work twice as hard for everything and are often overlooked in the workplace

In order to overcome this systematic oppression, we must first acknowledge it exists Black women are constantly being told that they're not good enough-that they need to look different or act differently in order to be seen as worthy of love and respect

This is why its so important that we love ourselves: so that we can recognize our beauty regardless of what anyone else thinks; so that when someone tells us were too loud or too aggressive or too abrasive (or any other untrue stereotype),

Self-love is a journey, not a destination You cant just wake up one day and arrive at our destination right? We must take the trip Traveling can be fun right, but we all know that sometimes it seems to take forever to get there We might be tired and frustrated along the way But when you decide to love yourself; it takes time and the biggest virtue, patience Ready become more confident and comfortable in your own skin, and wear that swimsuit when you arrive at your destination? That polka dot bikini is not awaiting on others' approval or validation for how gorgeous it looks

Your happiness and well-being come first before anything else

It's important to love yourself first, before anyone else You should be your priority and make sure you are happy and well-beings before anyone else No one is going to do this for themselves as much as we need to do it ourselves You are worth it You deserve it You are a winner, and you can do it! Youre a rockstar, a champion and a warrior--no matter what life throws at you! You are a queen, leader and legend in your own right; so never give up on yourself!

All in all, we know that black women are the backbone of our society. We deserve to love ourselves and be loved by others Matter of fact it is long overdue! But if we never get a "thank you" or an "amen", just remember to never give up on yourself, because you are worth it! You are worthy of being loved by yourself You will be all the better for it, and the memories (lessons) from your travel will last a long time

How do you personally comprehend the concept of selflove?

I define self-love as showing yourself unconditional positive regard More specifically giving yourself compassion, forgiving yourself and most importantly making a vow to yourself just like most are willing to make life-long vows to other people-- to show up for, trust and you believe in your ability to self-correct

In times when you experience emotional discomfort, what cognitive approaches do you employ to lift yourself out of a negative mindset?

No one is immune to experiencing a negative mindset even if it's in a moment. Even with all of my training and experience, I have moments of emotional discomfort I use the same thought work methods that I teach to others Cognitively, I start with calling myself out Self-awareness is extremely important in not staying stuck Be aware of what you ' re feeling so that you can regulate it properly Once I acknowledge the space I am in, I look to see what triggered me or if I was thinking my way into a space of discomfort (we do this by being hyper-focused on what went wrong), this allows me to determine if my discomfort is being fueled by negative thinking Then I challenge the negative thoughts with evidence (for example, If I start to feel guilty about having to take a short trip without the family, I challenge the guilt by acknowledging that this situation is not the norm for me and I am present with the family for a large portion of my time daily!) I know this probably seems like a lot, but it takes practice to where I am able to channel my moments of emotional discomfort instinctively See, it doesn't mean you can't have them or won't---this just means you have the skill to dismantle the discomfort

What are some methods that Black Women can implement to kickstart their everyday wellness pursuits?

The first thing I would advise is to be intentional Be intentional about the space you are in daily ( I call this a quick self checkin); be intentional about the energy you project! The second, have boundaries, its not a bad word, fall in love with knowing your limits Remember that boundaries are set by you, but are not meant to control others (even if you set 1 boundary and stick with it for a month until it's habitual); A boundary is the gatekeeper to your emotional peace

Do you have any books, guides, classes, or courses to aid Black Women in accomplishing their objectives?

In this archive for black women, I will delve into what self-care, self-love, and wellness mean for black women and why it's essential to prioritize these practices in our lives Black women are so much more than the perspective they create about us

Self-care is often considered a luxury, something to indulge in when we have time, but this is a dangerous myth Self-care is an essential practice that allows us to tend to our physical, emotional, and mental health. It involves taking time to rest, nourish our bodies, and engage in activities that bring us joy and reduce stress

Self-care isn't a one-size-fits-all approach; it looks different for each person For some, self-care might involve taking a bubble bath, practicing yoga, or getting a massage For others, it might mean taking a nap, going for a walk in nature, or spending time with loved ones

Self-love, on the other hand, involves cultivating a positive and compassionate relationship with oneself It's about treating ourselves with kindness, forgiveness, and acceptance

Wellness also involves paying attention to our relationships, careers, and community

As black women, we face unique challenges impacting our physical, emotional, and mental health. The stress of navigating systemic racism, microaggressions, and discrimination can take a toll on our bodies and minds. The pressure to be strong and resilient in adversity can lead to burnout and emotional exhaustion In addition, black women often carry the weight of their families and communities on their shoulders, leaving little time and energy for self-care and self-love.

It's important to prioritize self-care, selflove, and wellness because these practices can help us cope with our challenges and lead to a more fulfilling and joyful life. Self-care can reduce stress, improve sleep, and boost our mood Selflove can increase self-esteem, promote self-acceptance, and lead to healthier relationships. Wellness can improve physical health, increase energy, and enhance overall well-being

One of the biggest challenges that black women face is the burden of intersectionality Intersectionality refers to the idea that individuals can face multiple forms of oppression simultaneously and that these oppressions intersect and interact. For black women, this means that they face not only racism but also sexism and often experience these forms of discrimination in unique and complex ways.

Another important aspect of self-care for black women is setting boundaries in relationships Black women are often expected to be caregivers, both within their families and in their professional lives. While caregiving can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience, it can also be draining and lead to burnout Setting boundaries around time and energy can help to prevent this burnout and allow black women to focus on their own needs

Black women should stay away from people, places, and spaces that require us to micro-size ourselves to be in the room.

We should only operate in spaces allowing us to be the best and most authentic version of ourselves

Rewarding ourselves with self-care isn't just about money, vacations, and expensive clothing. Self-care is quality sleep, reading, peace, eating, showering, writing, and anything else you define as your own meaning of self-care.

Black women deserve to live a life rooted in self-care and should be designed to elevate us to higher levels in our lives. Cultivating that relationship with ourselves through self-love, self-care, self-wellness, self-empowerment, and wellness will set the standard for others to respect our boundaries. The greatest form of self-love is respecting our own boundaries.

Black women should prioritize rest and relaxation: Make time to rest and relax, even if it's just for a few minutes a day. This could mean taking a nap, practicing deep breathing, or listening to soothing music. It's important to have balance in all areas of your life. You don't have to do everything at once it's necessary to do things accordingly and plan to avoid the pressure of being overwhelmed and overworked.

Black women should Nourish their bodies: Eat a healthy, balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

Black women should Move their bodies: Engage in regular physical activity, whether that's going for a walk, dancing, or practicing yoga Exercise can reduce stress, improve sleep, and boost your mood.

Black women should connect with loved ones: Spend time with friends and family who uplift and support them. Social support is essential for our well-being.

Black women are rooted in the pain that the world has caused us. It's okay not to be the strongest black woman in the room, and it's okay to break because you're still whole at the end of the day. You deserve wellness that will soothe your soul and benefit you unimaginably

I am rooting for all my black sistas. This is the season of self-transformation and self-empowerment We got this; collectively, we will be the greatest version of ourselves. There's not another person I rather be than to be a black woman. The essence of us is something that makes us unstoppable in all aspects of our self-love journey.

How do you define self-love, and why do you believe it is essential for one’s overall well-being?

I define self-love as knowing your worth Knowing you’re worthy of love and not having to seek approval and validation from those around you It’s important because it exudes it’s hard to get the love you want if you can’t show that to yourself or believe in that for yourself Knowing your self-worth is healthy; it gives a foundation for well-being It’s a process and a journey.

Can you share a pivotal moment when you realized the importance of self-love and how it impacted you?

If I can try to think of the last time where I noticed a shift in me accepting myself more, loving myself more, or trusting myself and my intuition more, I would say it has been over the pandemic It was such a stressful time and a time that there was no audience for me Even when I was doing shows, it was in the privacy of my home to camera, you know? There wasn’t a time to get validation from the outer world in a way that I was used to throughout my career It was just so deafeningly quiet in the world I just felt like me and all my thoughts were right here (in my face), and I had to start practicing meditation and deeply thinking about selfacceptance, rethinking purpose, and reimagining what my vision was I feel like doing that made me a lot stronger and clearer

What role does self-compassion play in the practice of self-love? What does that look like to you?

I love the concept of self-compassion, and I feel like a lot of people have been talking about giving ourselves grace right now, and I think it’s really important because I believe we can be our own worst critics. It’s hard to be your best self all the time, you know, none of us can achieve that,

I can’t achieve that by I’m trying to be my best self, and I want people to be compassionate towards me It’s one of the most important virtues, so I know that I have to be compassionate with myself and give myself a break sometimes. I think it has to do with forgiveness too

Are there any wellness trends you’re into right now?

I like the idea of getting off social media a while before I go to sleep, like, that can’t be the last thing or even emails I like unplugging, making the lighting a little lower, and self-care stuff like candle-lit baths Getting in my space, and consciously unwinding before going to sleep is helpful When I wake up in the morning, I think of a least 3 things I’m grateful foe before I start doing other stuff. This helps me kind of get in my zone

The timeless nature of your music, particularly your song Closer, has touched so many listeners, and offered them a sense of healing. How does it feel when countless people express that your music has changed their lives?

I love the idea that I can impact and touch peoples lives through my music because part of what I’m doing with my music is like therapy for me, and just getting to express myself But I always wanted to have a positive impact on the world and help people transform, and get to what they want in their lives It’s just so affirming when I run into someone and they say things like you’ve helped me get through this or that or get to the next phase It gives me hope to keep putting out music and share things that are really close to me

The music industry has evolved significantly throughout the years, how have you adapted to these changes while staying true to your authentic sound and voice?

I started out as an independent artist with my family, label Skyblaze and every project I’ve done, our label has been able to partner up with another label It’s been empowering to me because I felt like I could always have my authentic voice Things are always changing, and it is hard to navigate, I think some of the change is good Some of the things on social media give independent artist like myself a platform where we can be heard I think navigating through the business part is always hard, but expressing myself, and doing the creative part, that pretty much stayed the same

WHAT MAKES YO DREAMSEEKER?

I’m always visioning the next thing, and whe to experience those b success I know there’s to I want and want to into fruition I feel li always dreaming, an always grateful, but I’m satisfied.

Are there any new collaborations our new music that we can be looking forward to this year or in the near future?

I’ve been working on a new album that’s going to come out at the beginning of the summer and I’m really excited to share what I’ve been going through the last couple years It’s been a minute since I had new music out, and this album is a multi -sensory experience. There’s even scents and colors that go with this songs. So I’m just excited for people to experience the whole vibe.

Do you have any encouraging words of wisdom for the black women in business or entertainment, or women in general who inspired to do what you do, or simply wake up and be great?

My advice to black women, all women, and entrepreneurs is just “it’s our time” Claim it, surround yourself with good people that believe in you and are going to push you to be your best Know that for a dream to manifest, sometimes, it takes a little longer than you think, but it’s our time, so let’s go
