“They said I was a musical genius. Only time will tell.”
But what is an urtext edition? At Bärenreiter the label “urtext” describes a scholarly-critical edition based on all known sources. In the past, it has often been difficult for musicians to really know if what they were performing was true to the composer’s intentions. Publications were heavily elaborated with editors’ own – often questionable – additions and interpretations. In order to adequately judge the quality of an edition, musicians would need to examine manuscripts and sources themselves.
What does the word urtext mean? The German prefix ur-literally means “original” or “earliest”. The earliest use of the term urtext goes back to the 19th century where it appeared in connection with literary texts. It referred to the original texts of writers such as Goethe or Shakespeare which scholars tried to restore and free from editorial additions. In music urtext now is a label used for scholarlycritical editions based on all known sources.
Bärenreiter takes on all this background work for you, our aim being to produce urtext editions reflecting the latest musicological research. Our editors, experts in their field, strive to set down a work as closely as possible to the composer’s intentions. This isn’t as easy as it sounds. Bärenreiter’s musicologists often have to travel around the world to track down sources for a composition. They work like detectives, deciphering manuscripts which are sometimes almost illegible and evaluating conflicting sources. 3
“After so many cantatas I only play for fun. My original work is for the fans.”
Isn’t urtext just a copy of the autograph? As a musician you certainly can appreciate how difficult it can be to grasp what the composer actually intended, especially when we have no recordings of the performances. Simply looking at the autograph – assuming it exists – is not enough. What if the composer made corrections in the first printed edition? Obviously in this case the autograph only provides part of the story of a composition. As many sources as possible need to be assessed in order to compile a Bärenreiter Urtext edition including sketches, letters, autographs, manuscript copies, proofs, first editions, first editions with autograph corrections, contemporary reviews and comments by contemporaries. No cost or effort is spared by Bärenreiter when it comes to amassing and piecing together all the available information. An indispensable part of every urtext edition is the critical commentary where all editorial decisions and discrepancies between the sources are meticulously recorded. Only in this way can the true genius of the composer and his work be revealed.
4
What else can I expect from a Bärenreiter Urtext edition? A trustworthy musical text alone does not yet justify the label Bärenreiter Urtext. Integral parts of Bärenreiter Urtext editions are: • Information on the genesis and history of the work • A description of the sources • Valuable notes on performance practice • A critical commentary explaining all source discrepancies and editorial decisions. But it’s not all about musicology. Bärenreiter also satisfies your practical needs as a performer. Bärenreiter Urtext editions offer: • Page turns and cues where you need them • In the case of vocal scores straight-forward idiomatic piano reductions • A well-presented layout and a user-friendly format • Excellent print quality • First-class paper and binding • Solid, “Made in Germany” quality
“I like the digital age, but nothing compares to the original.”

Also for the first time, annotations by J. S. Bach and C. P. E. Bach can be differentiated by using ink analysis (x-ray spectography of over 500 places in the score). This method also enables in-depth-analysis of areas which have been eroded to a large extent by iron ink gall erosion.

SACRED AND SECULAR WORKS
Ludwig van Beethoven New scholarly-critical edition The Mass in C major, completed and premiered in 1808, has been unjustly described as a preliminary step towards the great Missa solemnis. Yet it is a self-contained and, for its time, decidedly modern piece of church music.

Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827) Mass in C major op. 86 (Lat) Urtext / Ed. B. Cooper Score with full realization of the organ part Piano reduction by A. Campora BA 9039-90 ° V.s.
Drawing on the rich body of sources, Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper suggests practical solutions to the work’s musical and interpretative problems. His deep study of the sources convinced him to include a fully realized organ part in the score, just as Beethoven envisioned it for the first printed edition. As stated in the sources, the parts for the soloists and choir are notated on joint staves to demonstrate that the soloists are also to sing the choral passages. Rounding off this Urtext edition are a Foreword (Eng/Ger) and a Critical Commentary (Eng).

A Requiem masterpiece in German Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897)
NEW 2017
Ein deutsches Requiem op. 45 (Ger) Ed. P Schmitz Piano reduction based on Brahms' version for solo piano BA 7600-90 ° V.s. in preparation Among large-scale works, Brahms’s German Requiem is second to none in the importance it attaches to the choir. No wonder this magnum opus of the Romantic era belongs to the core repertoire of every ambitious choir. After a turbulent gestation, the Requiem was performed in Leipzig on 18 February 1869 with seven movements in the present order. Brahms took the words entirely from the Old and New Testaments, combining them into a unique “music of solace” unmatched to the present day. Our edition is based mainly on the original print of the score – a publication authorised by Brahms himself. The piano reduction reproduces Brahms’s own version for solo piano. The Stabat Mater is the bestknown of Caldara’s smaller vocal works. This publication is based on E. Mandyczewski’s edition which has, until now, been the definitive edition. Dvořák's Requiem is one of the highlights within the international choral repertoire. Now this work is presented in a chamber orchestra arrangement by Joachim Linckelmann based on the full score from the Complete Edition of the Works by Antonín Dvořák. The arrangement dispenses with all the brass instruments except for a single horn; all that remains of the percussion are the timpani; the organ has also been taken out. Fauré, Gabriel (1845-1924) Requiem (Lat) Urtext / Ed. C. M. Stahl, M. Stegemann Piano reduction by M. Focke BA 9461-90 ° V.s. The Messe de Requiem is probably the internationally best-known and most frequently performed work by Gabriel Fauré. The composer’s first version was limited to just five movements and smallscale forces with low strings, harp and organ. The work was then expanded several times culminating in the version for large orchestra of 1900. This orchestral version forms the basis of this edition. Despite its comparatively long period of gestation, the Requiem forms a stylistic unity. Unlike other requiem settings, the composer foregoes any theatrical gestures in this work. A restrained dynamic range together with graceful melodic writing for both
soloists and choir give the work a gentle and optimistic character. The vocal score is based on the volume of the Complete Works of Gabriel Fauré (BA 9461). It is important to note that this vocal score is also compatible with the first small-scale version as well as the second chamber orchestra version. High-quality Urtext based

Zadok the Priest and The King shall rejoice are the best-known of the four coronation anthems that Handel wrote for the crowning of George II in London (1727). HWV 258 accompanied the king’s anointment, HWV 260 his actual coronation. Thanks to their festive and majestic structure befitting the occasion as well as their spacious scoring for large choir and orchestra, it comes as no surprise that motifs from Zadok the Priest have found their way into the official hymn of the UEFA Champions League. The present editions by the authoritative Handel scholar Stephan Blaut are the first to offer these two anthems based on the Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition.

The “Dettingen Te Deum” was written to celebrate England’s victory over the French at the Battle of Dettingen. It is Handel’s last and most successful setting of the “Te Deum” and reveals a deep understanding of the English church music tradition. The sound impact of this broadly conceived work is governed by the choirs in an almost theatrical exegesis of the text. Particularly striking are several borrowings from the Messiah which Handel had just completed.

Psalm 98 Sing to the Lord a new made Song / Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied MWV A 23 / op. posth. 91 (Ger/Eng) for soloists (SATB) and two mixed choirs (SATB[2]) Urtext / Ed. J. M. Cooper Piano reduction based on first edition BA 9076-90 ° V.s. Mendelssohn’s setting of Psalm 98 was written in a few weeks to satisfy a commission in his new position as general music director of Prussia and was premiered by the Berlin Cathedral Choir on 1 January 1844. As he neither released the work for publication nor produced a vocal score, his psalm setting did not appear in print until after his death. For this edition the authoritative Mendelssohn specialist John Michael Cooper drew primarily on the autograph score with its many subsequent corrections and amendments. In this way it differs from many other editions, which tend to treat the autograph as a subordinate source. The piano reduction is based on the first printed edition, published by F. Kistner and Evers & Co. in 1851.

SACRED AND SECULAR WORKS
Bärenreiter Female Choir Series The choral scene is in a state of change! More and more choirs are lacking in male voices and at the same time, more and more female choirs are looking for high-quality literature beyond folksong arrangements. The Bärenreiter Female Choir series responds to these trends by presenting arrangements for female choir (mostly SMezA) of well-known, frequently-performed works. Haydn, Joseph (1732-1809) Missa brevis Sti Joannis de Deo “Little Organ Mass” (Hob. XXII:7) (Lat) Arranged for female choir SMezAA by H. Breuer BA 5694-90 ° V.s. Study score
Mozart’s final work, the Requiem K. 626, was left incomplete. The completion of the fragmentary score by his assistant Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who helped him with The Magic Flute, is a historical source in its own right with utmost proximity to Mozart’s thoughts. The Requiem score, published in the New Mozart Edition, served as the basis for this vocal score edition which now appears in a revised form and newly engraved. The musical text has been reviewed, the vocal parts made easier to read and the piano accompaniment easier to play. Christoph Wolff, an authoritative Requiem connoisseur, has supplied a Foreword with a clear and concise account of the work’s genesis and basic musical features.

This allows the work to be performed not only with two choirs but also in the delightful enlarged version for four choirs.

The Claude Palisca Prize 2010
This edition presents Rossini‘s original chamber music setting of the Petite Messe solennelle for two pianos and harmonium. This unusual instrumentation is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitean keyboard tradition of the 18 th century which was cultivated in France during Rossini‘s day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositions as written by, for example Liszt and Bruckner. Based on the Urtext of the

To appear in November 2016 This oratorio (c. 1760) is one of Telemann’s last large-scale vocal compositions. The libretto, by K. W. Ramler, recounts the Biblical events from the Resurrection to the Ascension in seven sections. Alternating between recitative, da capo arias and festive choruses, Telemann succeeds in producing a vivid and effective musical interpretation.

SACRED AND SECULAR WORKS
“… Obviously, this is the latest and most comprehensive edition and the one that should supplant all others on music library shelves.” (The American Organist) The genesis of some misunderstandings included in the 1913 and 1964 Ricordi editions is traced. The first version of the Liber scriptus for chorus is included in the appendix while the later version for mezzosoprano solo is to be found in the main part of the edition.

Verdi, Giuseppe (1813-1901) Messa da Requiem (Lat) Urtext / Ed. M. Uvietta Piano reduction by A. Campora BA 7590-90 ° V.s. For this scholarly-critical edition, the editor has consulted no less than 16 sources, many more than were ever used for any other edition of the Requiem; some of these sources were never evaluated before and one source, a hand-written vocal score, particularly relevant to the evaluation of the Liber scriptus, was newly discovered. As such, this edition offers new philological and editorial decisions regarding phrasing, articulation and dynamics and succeeds in presenting practical suggestions to solve musical problems and those concerning the interpretation of this famous work. This edition comprises a concise Critical Commentary in the score as well as a detailed one on the Bärenreiter website. The most important editions published in the 19th century are compared with regard to musicological questions in the work.
