Franz Schubert: Sonata in A major for Piano D 959
Schubert composed his great Piano Sonata in A major just a few months before his untimely death in 1828. The balance this work strikes between lyrical melody, emotional intimacy and pianistic brilliance makes it a highlight among his sonatas, not least because of its poetic Andantino. This scholarly-critical edition by Walburga Litschauer is based on the Urtext of the New Schubert Edition and uses the autograph manuscript as the prime source. The edition is rounded off by a new foreword, valuable notes on performance practice as well as a Critical Commentary with information on performance-relevant alternative readings and Schubert’s notation of accents. Schubert’s drafts of the A major Sonata can be accessed on Bärenreiter’s website.
Edited by Walburga Litschauer With performance suggestions by Mario Aschauer BA 10861 ¡ approx. ₏ 11.95 To appear in November 2014 This new edition replaces the existing edition BA 5633.

The autograph to Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 is lost. For every new edition which has appeared during the course of time there have been only two authentic sources to draw upon; the copyist’s manuscript of the score with Beethoven’s own corrections and the first edition in parts from 1808 which was published in Vienna and which contains a few revisions dated after the aforementioned manuscript. Though no new sources have been available for this new edition, numerous editorial emendations which have prevailed in all previous editions (even Urtext editions) have now been corrected. Thus, this new Bärenreiter Urtext edition presents Beethoven’s famous work in the clarity which it deserves. • With numerous corrections • Piano reduction with a separate solo piano part ISMN 979-0-006-55831-5

First ever Urtext edition
Erwin Schulhoff: Sonatas Nos. 1–3 for Piano BÄRENREITER URTEXT Edited by Michael Kube BA 9560 · approx. € 36.95 With his works of the 1920s – an original blend of traditional genres, rhythms inspired by jazz and dance music and judiciously expanded tonality – the German-Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff captured the tenor of the times. This edition presents the piano sonatas that originated between 1924 and 1927.
To appear in October 2014
Michael Kube has edited this first ever scholarly-critical edition on the basis of the prints published in Schulhoff’s lifetime and compared these with the surviving handwritten sources. Not only have errors been corrected but peculiarities of Schulhoff’s notation have also been reconstructed. The principal source for Sonata No. 3 was the composer’s autograph fair copy. • First Urtext edition ISMN 979-0-2601-0589-8

Suk’s magnum opus for piano
Josef Suk: Životem a snem/ Things Lived and Dreamt Ten Pieces for piano op. 30 BÄRENREITER URTEXT Edited by Jarmila Gabrielová BA 9561 · approx. € 17.95 To appear in September 2014
The cycle Životem a snem (Things Lived and Dreamt) by Josef Suk (1874–1935) is his magnum opus for the piano and has been called the “diary of an artist”. Although Suk’s musical language never exceeds the bounds of tonality, his wealth of resources, the flexible harmony, chords of stacked thirds and meticulous performance instructions were new to the Bohemia of his day. The autograph contains many cuts, overwritings and barely decipherable passages, yet it is carefully prepared and largely identical to the first edition of 1909. This first scholarly-critical edition takes all source variants into account for the first time. • Magnum opus of Suk’s piano music • First ever scholarly-critical edition

Skrjabin in a new light
Alexander Skrjabin: Complete Piano Sonatas IV
Volume IV of Skrjabin’s Complete Piano Sonatas unites Sonata No. 9 op. 68 (nicknamed “Black Mass” – but not by Skrjabin) and Sonata No. 10 op. 70. These two works originated virtually at the same time, in 1911-13 and 1912-13, respectively.
BÄRENREITER URTEXT Edited by Christoph Flamm With a foreword by Marc-André Hamelin BA 9619 · approx. € 22.95 To appear in November 2014
ISMN 979-0-006-53693-1
Christoph Flamm has given both sonatas a fundamentally fresh look in this new Urtext edition. Exploiting all the autograph sources, including Skrjabin’s sketches and drafts, he has arrived at surprising new readings. His foreword sheds informative light on the genesis and significance of these pieces; the many variants are documented in detail in the Critical Commentary. The high editorial standards are complemented by spacious engraving and practical page-turns.

Bach composed his oratorio for the Feast of the Ascension in Leipzig in 1735. Though this work has the duration of a cantata, the choice of text places it among the oratorios. It combines the biblical account of the Ascension with chorales and free madrigal poems. As in other works which were composed during this same year (e.g. the Christmas Oratorio), Bach reveals a special fondness for colourful orchestration, with two flutes, two oboes, three trumpets, timpani and strings, creating a splendid Baroque sound with a strikingly festive character. This edition is based on the thoroughly researched musical text from the New Bach Edition. • Lavishly scored oratorio of a festive nature • Based on the New Bach Edition • Bilingual foreword by Andreas Glöckner (Ger/Eng)

Bach’s famous work in two versions by Mendelssohn
Johann Sebastian Bach: St Matthew Passion BWV 244 Arranged by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Berlin 1829 and Leipzig 1841 Felix Mendelssohn can claim the credit of having ushered in the Bach-Renaissance with his arrangement and performance of the St Matthew Passion. It was revived for the first time in the Berlin Singakademie on 11 March 1829, one hundred years after its premiere in Leipzig’s Thomaskirche. A second arrangement was performed in Leipzig in 1841. Originally only available on hire as part of the edition published by Bärenreiter in 2009, this vocal score is now available on sale. It enables both the Berlin and the later Leipzig versions to be performed. A concordance provides information on the respective sequence of movements and their relation to the Bach Works Catalogue (BWV) and the New Bach Edition.

Composed in 1748, Handel’s oratorio on the wise and righteous King Solomon is one of the most lavish works he created in this genre. He attached special importance to the choir: rarely does Handel’s music have such extended choral numbers, ranging from homophonic settings to choruses of jubilation in eight contrapuntal parts. Core work with chamber orchestra instrumentation
Antonín Dvořák: Requiem op. 89 (B 165) for Soloists, Choir and Chamber Orchestra Arranged by Joachim Linckelmann Score BA 9582 · approx. € 85.00 Dvořák’s Requiem, for soloists, choir and orchestra, is one of the highlights within the international choral repertoire. Now Bärenreiter is presenting this work in an arrangement by Joachim Linckelmann with chamber orchestra based on the full score from the Complete Edition of the Works by Antonín Dvořák. The arrangement dispenses with all the brass instruments except for a single horn; all that remains of the percussion are the timpani; the organ has also been taken out. The cor anglais and bass clarinet parts can be replaced by an oboe and clarinet (ossia staves in score and parts).

The only complete edition Antonio Vivaldi’s twelve concertos op. 4, known as La Stravaganza, were written around 1714. They were first published by Roger & La Cene in 1723 and appeared in two books, each with six concertos. Another edition of just six of the twelve concertos followed in 1728, issued by the English publishing house Walsh. Walsh’s edition included concertos nos. 1, 2, and 4 from book one, nos. 9 and 11 from book two and a concerto not found in the Roger & La Cene first edition, namely a variant of the fourth concerto, RV 291. This new scholarly-critical edition of La Stravaganza, edited by the acclaimed conductor and musicologist Christopher Hogwood, is the only complete edition presently available. In addition to the twelve concertos that have come down to us in the Roger & La Cene edition, Bärenreiter’s edition includes both the alternate version of the fourth concerto (book one) as found in the 1728 Walsh edition as well as an alternate version of the sixth concerto (book one) that survives in a set of manuscript parts. This is a must for violinists, orchestras and libraries. • The only complete edition of La Stravaganza available today • Large format orchestral parts (25.5 x 32.5 cm) with impeccable layout

A standard work for violinists The School of Bowing Technique op. 2 is the second important violin tutor by Otakar Ševčík (1852–1934) and deals with the elementary technical demands of the right hand. Divided into three sections, the tutor contains more than 4,000 systematically arranged bowing exercises in increasing order of difficulty. This new edition of the School of Bowing Technique combines the original six volumes in groups of two. It is largely based on the first edition, published in the early 20th century, and on other sources from Ševčík’s estate. The editor, Jaroslav Foltýn, is a professor of violin at the Prague Conservatory, as was Ševčík himself. • New edition of a tutor that generations of violinists have grown up with • Fundamental work by a leading violin educator • Three volumes in increasing order of difficulty: easy – moderate – difficult • Methodological notes by the editor (Cz/Eng/Ger)

A work of Dvořák’s youth
Antonín Dvořák: String Quartet No. 2 in B-flat major (B 17) Edited by Antonín Pokorný and Karel Šolc Parts BA 9540 · approx. € 24.95 (replaces H 3439) Study score TP 540 · approx. € 18.95 (replaces H 3440) To appear in October 2014
Like Dvořák’s third and fourth quartets (in D major and E minor respectively), String Quartet No. 2 in B-flat major was probably composed between 1868 and 1870, when the young and still inexperienced composer was openly responding to stimuli from his musical surroundings and excitedly adopting new compositional techniques. All three quartets were long considered lost; it was even said that Dvořák destroyed them. But copies of the parts resurfaced in the archive of the Prague Conservatory and have served as the principal source for this new publication. This edition presents the musical text from the Antonín Dvořák Complete Edition, together with a new foreword by Hartmut Schick.

Johannes Brahms: Trio for Violin, Violoncello and Piano after the Sextet in B-flat major op. 18 Arranged by Theodor Kirchner
© 2014 by Bärenreiter-Verlag, Kassel
BÄRENREITER URTEXT In addition to Bärenreiter’s scholarly-critical editions of Brahms’ trios, an arrangement of Brahms’ String Sextet op. 18 for piano trio by his contemporary and friend Theodor Kirchner is now being published. Simrock, Brahms’ publisher, issued it in 1883. Brahms responded to the arrangement of his sextet with total enthusiasm and praise for the skills of his friend Kirchner. Christopher Hogwood’s scholarly-critical edition includes an introduction which sheds light not just on the history of the arrangement and its validity in its own right, but also on Kirchner and his relationship to Brahms. • A much welcomed edition to the piano trio literature • Includes an informative introduction (Eng/Ger) and a Critical Commentary (Eng)

Study score to Debussy’s masterpiece
Claude Debussy: La Mer Trois esquisses symphoniques BÄRENREITER URTEXT
Following the recent publication of the full score and performance material to Debussy’s La Mer (BA 7880), Bärenreiter now presents the study score edition of this “impressionistic” masterpiece. The new scholarly-critical edition draws on several important sources previously unavailable to musicologists, resulting in an array of new readings and corrections. In addition, there are many changes, a.o. in terms of articulation and dynamics. This new edition includes the famous “fanfare” in Movement III, clearly marked in small print and brackets. This fanfare was excised in the 1910 reissue of the work, but was reinstated by a number of great conductors who knew Debussy, i.e. Monteux, Münch, Mitropoulos and Ansermet. They felt that the excision was a misunderstanding and that the fanfare was necessary for the structure of the movement. And so, the Bärenreiter edition presents the revival of a performing tradition which is committed to the fanfare. • New Urtext edition with numerous corrections in comparison to other editions • Important sources which were previously inaccessible have been taken into account

Bärenreiter’s new scholarly-critical edition of Gabriel Fauré’s evergreen, the Pavane op. 50, has been edited by Robin Tait as part of the Complete Works of Gabriel Fauré. The popularity of the work is mostly attributed to its many arrangements but the original version for orchestra is being published here for the first time. Shortly after completing the orchestral work, Fauré began work on a version for choir, which was actually premiered before the orchestral version. This new Bärenreiter edition offers conductors and orchestras a reliable Urtext edition of the Pavane’s original orchestral version which will surely enhance symphonic concert programmes everywhere. • First edition of the original version for orchestra • Urtext based on the Complete Works of Gabriel Fauré

A new addition to the clarinetists’ repertoire
Leoš Janáček: Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (after the Sonata for Violin and Piano)
This arrangement of the well-known violin sonata is based on the volume of the Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Leoš Janáček (Series E/1–2). The Israeli clarinetist Shirley Brill, who teaches at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, has arranged the work for her instrument with a sensitive ear for the sound quality of the original composition. Her version displays the specific potential of the clarinet to good advantage; in a few passages it proved necessary to adapt the piano accompaniment. The arrangement was commissioned for the International Janáček Competition 2014 in Brno (Czech republic).

Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben, on poems by Adelbert von Chamisso, deals with the trauma of a woman who loses the man who was her first love and the guiding light of her life. Schumann himself completed what is perhaps his most unified song cycle in blissful anticipation of his union with Clara Wieck. This new edition presents the work on the basis of the first print, using Schumann’s autograph for purposes of consultation. The alternative readings in the autograph vocal part also give singers valuable tips for a nuanced delivery of the words. • Original edition for medium voice • Comprehensive bilingual foreword (Ger/Eng) and Critical Commentary (Ger) • The song texts are printed separately and include English translations taken from Richard Stokes’ publication

Schubert’s knightly drama
Franz Schubert: Fierabras (D 796) Heroic-romantic opera in three acts Libretto by Josef Kupelwieser BÄRENREITER URTEXT
Composed in 1823, Franz Schubert’s Fierabras is a “number opera” with spoken dialogue in the manner of opéra comique. It is based on the medieval legends associated with Charlemagne, including that of Eginhard and Emma, and draws on the old French heroic epic (chanson de geste). Schubert’s masterpiece will receive its premiere at the 2014 Salzburg Festival in a Peter Stein staging with Ingo Metzmacher conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The production will use the new Bärenreiter performance material.

Gluck’s “German Iphigenia”
Christoph Willibald Gluck: Iphigenie auf Tauris (Vienna version 1781)
Following the rousing success of Iphigénie en Tauride, Gluck arranged this popular drama of human passions, guilt and unconditional friendship for the Vienna Burgtheater anew, premiered in 1781. Especially remarkable is his masterly orchestration, which turns natural events into agents in the plot and projects a striking contrast between civilization and the savagery of nature. As in ancient Greek tragedy, Gluck attached great importance to the unity of the whole and the interplay of all elements including costumes and stage sets. He was also especially concerned with integrating the choir into the action on stage. • Urtext edition based on the Gluck Complete Edition • Detailed foreword (Ger/Eng) by the editorial board of the Gluck Complete Edition • Idiomatic well presented piano reduction

Organ
Edition based on ... Louis Vierne (1870–1937) raised the organ symphony to its stylistic zenith. One of his pupils, Marcel Dupré, was the teacher of Thierry Escaich, who assisted in the editing of this volume. Symphony No. 5, the largest of Vierne’s six organ symphonies, was full of misprints in its first edition. Our edition takes the composer’s autograph as its fehlt principal source. Unlike previous editions, Helga NB Schauerte-Maubouet has also drawn on a fragmentary handwritten errata list as a secondary source, allowing her to verify Vierne’s late alterations to details in the autograph.

Book on Music
Contemporary performance techniques for the guitar This book, co-written by guitarist Seth F. Josel and composer Ming Tsao, provides a comprehensive survey of contemporary performance techniques on the classical guitar. It was inspired by a new generation of solo guitarists whose extraordinary technical and virtuosic skills have paved the way for a new understanding of instrumental performance practice. Detailed explanations are given for the instrument’s technical potential within the historical context of traditional guitar technique. Composers will be interested in the in-depth analyses of contemporary guitar literature, featuring many examples of chamber and ensemble music. Four main chapters describe: • Techniques of the right and left hands • Special harmonies and percussive techniques • The main instruments of the guitar family and their potential • Possible ways of notating contemporary guitar literature The examples discussed in the book are complemented by an enclosed CD and detailed charts on multiphonics, bitones, and percussion techniques. Seth F. Josel is among the leading figures of his generation in modern guitar performance and has taken part in the premieres of more than 100 works as a soloist and ensemble member. A regular guest at Europe’s major contemporary music festivals, he has worked with composers of the stature of Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Tristan Murail and James Tenney and has played with such leading orchestras and ensembles as the New York Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Staatskapelle. From 1991 to 2000 he was a permanent member of the Ensemble musikFabrik. Today he lives in Berlin. Ming Tsao (b. Berkeley, CA, 1966) is professor of composition at Gothenburg University. His compositions have been performed amongst others by the Arditti Quartet, ensemble recherche and the Stuttgart Opera (premiere of Die Geisterinsel in 2011). He is regularly involved in the Donaueschingen Festival, the Witten Days of New Chamber Music, the Darmstadt Contemporary Music Holiday Courses and Wien Modern. His works are published by C.F. Peters (Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig). He, too, lives in Berlin.
