Franz Schubert: Sonata in A major for Piano D 959

Schubert composed his great Piano Sonata in A major just a few months before his untimely death in 1828. The balance this work strikes between lyrical melody, emotional intimacy and pianistic brilliance makes it a highlight among his sonatas, not least because of its poetic Andantino. This scholarly-critical edition by Walburga Litschauer is based on the Urtext of the New Schubert Edition and uses the autograph manuscript as the prime source. The edition is rounded off by a new foreword, valuable notes on performance practice as well as a Critical Commentary with information on performance-relevant alternative readings and Schubertâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s notation of accents. The autograph to Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 is lost. For every new edition which has appeared during the course of time there have been only two authentic sources to draw upon; the copyist’s manuscript of the score with Beethoven’s own corrections and the first edition in parts from 1808 which was published in Vienna and which contains a few revisions dated after the aforementioned manuscript. Though no new sources have been available for this new edition, numerous editorial emendations which have prevailed in all previous editions (even Urtext editions) have now been corrected. Bach composed his oratorio for the Feast of the Ascension in Leipzig in 1735. Though this work has the duration of a cantata, the choice of text places it among the oratorios. It combines the biblical account of the Ascension with chorales and free madrigal poems. As in other works which were composed during this same year (e.g. the Christmas Oratorio), Bach reveals a special fondness for colourful orchestration, with two flutes, two oboes, three trumpets, timpani and strings, creating a splendid Baroque sound with a strikingly festive character. Bach’s famous work in two versions by Mendelssohn

Johann Sebastian Bach: St Matthew Passion BWV 244 Arranged by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Berlin 1829 and Leipzig 1841 Felix Mendelssohn can claim the credit of having ushered in the Bach-Renaissance with his arrangement and performance of the St Matthew Passion. It was revived for the first time in the Berlin Singakademie on 11 March 1829, one hundred years after its premiere in Leipzig’s Thomaskirche. A second arrangement was performed in Leipzig in 1841. Originally only available on hire as part of the edition published by Bärenreiter in 2009, this vocal score is now available on sale. It enables both the Berlin and the later Leipzig versions to be performed. A concordance provides information on the respective sequence of movements and their relation to the Bach Works Catalogue (BWV) and the New Bach Edition.

Now Bärenreiter is presenting this work in an arrangement by Joachim Linckelmann with chamber orchestra based on the full score from the Complete Edition of the Works by Antonín Dvořák. The arrangement dispenses with all the brass instruments except for a single horn; all that remains of the percussion are the timpani; the organ has also been taken out. The cor anglais and bass clarinet parts can be replaced by an oboe and clarinet (ossia staves in score and parts).

New ensembles are being created every day, and school and church choirs have learned to attract young singers by focusing on this repertoire. This edition offers exciting original arrangements that have never before appeared in print, written in an authentic idiom for two women’s or girls’ voices with piano accompaniment. The spirituals can also be performed without piano, with the lead melody always in the upper voice. The only complete edition Antonio Vivaldi’s twelve concertos op. 4, known as La Stravaganza, were written around 1714. They were first published by Roger & La Cene in 1723 and appeared in two books, each with six concertos. Another edition of just six of the twelve concertos followed in 1728, issued by the English publishing house Walsh. Walsh’s edition included concertos nos. 1, 2, and 4 from book one, nos. 9 and 11 from book two and a concerto not found in the Roger & La Cene first edition, namely a variant of the fourth concerto, RV 291. This new scholarly-critical edition of La Stravaganza, edited by the acclaimed conductor and musicologist Christopher Hogwood, is the only complete edition presently available. In addition to the twelve concertos that have come down to us in the Roger & La Cene edition, Bärenreiter’s edition includes both the alternate version of the fourth concerto (book one) as found in the 1728 Walsh edition as well as an alternate version of the sixth concerto (book one) that survives in a set of manuscript parts. A standard work for violinists The School of Bowing Technique op. 2 is the second important violin tutor by Otakar Ševčík (1852–1934) and deals with the elementary technical demands of the right hand. Divided into three sections, the tutor contains more than 4,000 systematically arranged bowing exercises in increasing order of difficulty. This new edition of the School of Bowing Technique combines the original six volumes in groups of two. It is largely based on the first edition, published in the early 20th century, and on other sources from Ševčík’s estate. Like Dvořák’s third and fourth quartets (in D major and E minor respectively), String Quartet No. 2 in B-flat major was probably composed between 1868 and 1870, when the young and still inexperienced composer was openly responding to stimuli from his musical surroundings and excitedly adopting new compositional techniques. All three quartets were long considered lost; it was even said that Dvořák destroyed them. But copies of the parts resurfaced in the archive of the Prague Conservatory and have served as the principal source for this new publication. Following the recent publication of the full score and performance material to Debussy’s La Mer (BA 7880), Bärenreiter now presents the study score edition of this “impressionistic” masterpiece. The new scholarly-critical edition draws on several important sources previously unavailable to musicologists, resulting in an array of new readings and corrections. In addition, there are many changes, a.o. in terms of articulation and dynamics. This new edition includes the famous “fanfare” in Movement III, clearly marked in small print and brackets. This fanfare was excised in the 1910 reissue of the work, but was reinstated by a number of great conductors who knew Debussy, i.e. Monteux, Münch, Mitropoulos and Ansermet. They felt that the excision was a misunderstanding and that the fanfare was necessary for the structure of the movement. And so, the Bärenreiter edition presents the revival of a performing tradition which is committed to the fanfare. • New Urtext edition with numerous corrections in comparison to other editions • Important sources which were previously inaccessible have been taken into account

Bärenreiter’s new scholarly-critical edition of Gabriel Fauré’s evergreen, the Pavane op. 50, has been edited by Robin Tait as part of the Complete Works of Gabriel Fauré. The popularity of the work is mostly attributed to its many arrangements but the original version for orchestra is being published here for the first time. Leoš Janáček: Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (after the Sonata for Violin and Piano)

This arrangement of the well-known violin sonata is based on the volume of the Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Leoš Janáček (Series E/1–2). The Israeli clarinetist Shirley Brill, who teaches at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin, has arranged the work for her instrument with a sensitive ear for the sound quality of the original composition. Her version displays the specific potential of the clarinet to good advantage; in a few passages it proved necessary to adapt the piano accompaniment. The arrangement was commissioned for the International Janáček Competition 2014 in Brno (Czech republic).

Composed in 1823, Franz Schubert’s Fierabras is a “number opera” with spoken dialogue in the manner of opéra comique. It is based on the medieval legends associated with Charlemagne, including that of Eginhard and Emma, and draws on the old French heroic epic (chanson de geste). Schubert’s masterpiece will receive its premiere at the 2014 Salzburg Festival in a Peter Stein staging with Ingo Metzmacher conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Following an official period of mourning for the Archduchess Maria Josepha, the Burgtheater reopened in 1767 with the premiere of Gluck’s Alceste. Edition based on ... Louis Vierne (1870–1937) raised the organ symphony to its stylistic zenith. One of his pupils, Marcel Dupré, was the teacher of Thierry Escaich, who assisted in the editing of this volume. Symphony No. 5, the largest of Vierne’s six organ symphonies, was full of misprints in its first edition. Our edition takes the composer’s autograph as its fehlt principal source. Unlike previous editions, Helga NB Schauerte-Maubouet has also drawn on a fragmentary handwritten errata list as a secondary source, allowing her to verify Vierne’s late alterations to details in the autograph.

Contemporary performance techniques for the guitar This book, co-written by guitarist Seth F. Josel and composer Ming Tsao, provides a comprehensive survey of contemporary performance techniques on the classical guitar. It was inspired by a new generation of solo guitarists whose extraordinary technical and virtuosic skills have paved the way for a new understanding of instrumental performance practice. Detailed explanations are given for the instrument’s technical potential within the historical context of traditional guitar technique. Composers will be interested in the in-depth analyses of contemporary guitar literature, featuring many examples of chamber and ensemble music. Four main chapters describe: • Techniques of the right and left hands • Special harmonies and percussive techniques • The main instruments of the guitar family and their potential • Possible ways of notating contemporary guitar literature The examples discussed in the book are complemented by an enclosed CD and detailed charts on multiphonics, bitones, and percussion techniques. Seth F. Josel is among the leading figures of his generation in modern guitar performance and has taken part in the premieres of more than 100 works as a soloist and ensemble member. A regular guest at Europe’s major contemporary music festivals, he has worked with composers of the stature of Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Tristan Murail and James Tenney and has played with such leading orchestras and ensembles as the New York Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Staatskapelle. From 1991 to 2000 he was a permanent member of the Ensemble musikFabrik. Today he lives in Berlin. Ming Tsao (b. Berkeley, CA, 1966) is professor of composition at Gothenburg University. His compositions have been performed amongst others by the Arditti Quartet, ensemble recherche and the Stuttgart Opera (premiere of Die Geisterinsel in 2011). He is regularly involved in the Donaueschingen Festival, the Witten Days of New Chamber Music, the Darmstadt Contemporary Music Holiday Courses and Wien Modern. His works are published by C.F. Peters (Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig). He, too, lives in Berlin.
