Louis Vierne: The New Bärenreiter Urtext Edition

Notre Dame, Paris

Louis Vierne (1870–1937) studied privately with César Franck. He deputised for Charles-Marie Widor at St. Sulpice (Paris) from 1892 onwards, before being appointed titulaire organist at Notre Dame (Paris) in 1900. He held this position until his death. Numerous concert tours throughout Europe and the USA made him well-known outside France. His famous students included Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Duruflé. In turn, Duruflé’s student Thierry Escaich is the co-editor of this Vierne Urtext Edition. Vierne’s organ works are undisputed masterpieces of organ music and form an integral part of the virtuoso organ repertoire.

In particular, Vierne raised the form of the organ symphony to new heights and influenced the development of organ technique worldwide. The collections Pièces de Fantaisie and Pièces en style libre also received wide acclaim. The compositional level of Vierne’s piano works equals that of the organ works. For the fi rst time they will appear in a complete critical edition which will include previously unpublished works as well as works attributed to him. His musical language was influenced to a large extent by his teacher César Franck; there are also compositional elements of Claude Debussy. Due to the varying degree of difficulty the organ and piano works will appeal to both the professional musician as well as the advanced student.

The Editor: Helga Schauerte-Maubouet is an internationally known music scholar and interpreter of French organ music. She has written several articles for the MGG and is currently editing Urtext editions of the organ works of Léon Boëllmann and Théodore Dubois as well as choral works by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. She teaches at the Paris Conservatoire Nadia Boulanger and is organist at the German Protestant Church in Paris. Described as “une excellente musicienne doublée d‘une organiste remarquable“ (Jean Langlais, 1987), Helga Schauerte-Maubouet has made over 20 CD recordings, including the complete organ works of Jehan Alain and composer portraits of Boëllmann, Dubois and Langlais, as well as recordings for radio and television. The Co-editors • Thierry Escaich (professor at the Paris Conservatoire) • Rollin Smith (organist and musicologist) • Olivier Gardon (pianist and professor at the Paris Conservatoire) • Brigitte de Leersnyder (pianist and musicologist) • Jean-Pierre Mazeirat (musicologist)
