Natural Veneer Veneer & Engineered Veneer
Is this furniture solid wood?
It’s one of the most common questions asked of furniture makers because somewhere along the line, veneers got a bad reputation. The popular perception is that furniture that incorporates veneers is lower quality than solid wood pieces. In reality, most fine furniture is made of a combination of veneers and solid wood. If you study the elegant antique furniture showcased in museums, you will see expertly crafted veneered furniture that has withstood the test of time. Solid woods and veneers are both excellent materials when used in the proper place and well-constructed.
What is veneer? Wood veneer is a thin slice of wood cut or peeled from a log. The slice can be as thin as a piece of paper or thick enough to accommodate sanding and refinishing down the road. The veneer is adhered to another wood surface. Typically, the outer layer is made from the most beautiful or exotic woods, while the substrate is made from utilitarian woods or particle board. Veneers are not a new invention. Elaborate veneers were discovered in King Tut’s tomb in Egypt and were used extensively during the Renaissance. By the 18th century, veneers had become an art form. Master cabinetmakers such as Chippendale and Hepplewhite inlaid exotic woods in intricate patterns to create visual interest in their delicately crafted furniture.
Why not use solid wood? Solid wood is essential for posts or legs that support furniture, for framing, or whenever carving is involved. Because of this, every piece of fine furniture is comprised of at least some solid wood. But consider these issues:
Proper Usage is Key Solid woods and veneers are both quality materials for fine furniture, but they must be used correctly. A craftsman will choose the best material to use depending upon the application. When you are purchasing fine furniture, look for solid woods and veneers used in the following ways: Solid Wood
• Solid wood bows and warps over time. • Heat and humidity changes can make solid wood contract, leading to splits along the grain known as “season cracks”. • Woods with the most beautiful natural patterns are often saved to make veneers as a way to stretch the value of the lumber. • Solid wood is heavy. • Solid wood does not bend easily.

With natural veneers we achieve a perfect balance between beauty and technical performance.

Slicing and Jointing Techniques The appearance of the veneer sheet is determined by the way we slice the wood and join the pieces together. The various ways that veneer can be cut are shown below. The following page explains how the various strips of veneer can then be jointed to produce the final sheet. The drawings give you a good idea of the end result.
This lets you decide properly what your panel will finally look like and what the best choice is for your application. Whatever you choose: real wood is always unique and gives your project just that little bit extra.
Slicing Techniques Crown Cut The flat sliced or crown cut, through the heart of the log.
Quarter Normal Cut Straight-grained, cut at right angles to growth rings.
Jointing Techniques Book Matched This is the standard method. The various veneer strips are joined together in mirrorimage pairs. This means that each strip is the reflection of the previous one. This technique lets you see perfectly how the log was handled.
Reversed Matched This has all the advantages of a slipmatched sheet of veneer. In addition, the boards do not all have to be the same way up. This makes it unbelievably easy for the customer to work with a veneered panel.
Slip Matched This technique is often chosen if the veneer needs to be stained. Staining means that no colour differences can be seen between the different veneer strips on a panel.
Mix Matched BAFCO has developed its own method for the mix matched or planked technique, in which the veneers are jointed together randomly to give the final sheet the appearance of solid wood without disadvantages such as warping as the humidity varies. BAFCO can process veneers of various thicknesses in this way (0.6 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm and 2 mm). The thicker veneers are used when additional structuring needs to be applied.
