paige franklin Inspired by the natural landscape, I notice and observe nature from a perspective not often seen. My current work focuses on undergrowth and the woodland floor which often tells the story of the ecosystem within that wooded area, I use this perspective to provoke the feeling of immersion and curiosity of the natural world. My current work consists of 2D paintings and drawings using the materials in an expressive loose way, showing the wilder side to nature rather than the tamed. I find this untamed side of nature by going off the footpath, looking at my subject from a low angle much like the view of the local wildlife that inhabit the space. The earthy tones, sometimes dark with a muddy feel to my work, represents the British weather and the feeling of being in the countryside. The seasonal changes are a reoccurring theme to my work, often representing how the look of the natural landscape alters through the project with more growth and greenery being seen in the transition to Spring. Influences in my work include artists John Virtue and Michael Porter who both use nature as the main focus, often taking an abstract approach to the work. Michael Porter uses close ups of undergrowth and plants such as in his 2018 series “Dirt” he looks at the intricacies of plant roots making something quite ordinary into the main focus of the piece.

The signs around me, in my environment, have inspired me. My fascination stems from the realisation that, on a daily basis in the UK, we are constantly being dictated to whenever we go anywhere. During the global Coronavirus pandemic, we were all asked to stay at home with national lockdowns in place. The restricted movement of this period is the running theme through this body of work. During the lockdown periods life slowed down and I started to take notice of the signs in my local area. I became more observant of my surroundings on my daily walks at this time; I started my researching by taking photos of the signs in my local area and from the photos I progressed to manipulating the road signs that I came across. The manipulated signs have a running theme of incorporating COVID related quotes/ imagery. My practice is a mixture of sculptural work, paintings and found objects (specifically signs). The inspiration for my art has come from my parttime job working at a COVID Vaccination Site and a GP Practice, where I hear first-hand the conspiracies, doubts, fears and feelings of others about the pandemic.

The artwork selected for my degree show has been created using MDF board, canvas and signs that I have purchased and found. The objective for my practice is to create work that makes the viewer take a second look and question if what they are looking at are real signs or my own readymade signs. An artist that has had an influence on my practice is Bob and Roberta Smith; in his work he focuses on bold and eye catching paintings with his lettering which, I have recently started to introduce lettering/ phrases into my own paintings and signs.

My works are created in a wide range of mediums including installation, video and textiles. Although the concepts behind my individual projects are often different, my artwork is all linked by the process of creation and more often than not follow the subject of mortality. For me personally there is a great fascination between the links that art and science share, and exploring the fine line between artistic beauty and scientific education, with inspiration being taken from artists such as Katherine Dowson, Annie Cattrell and Damien Hirst. My current work is a continuing exploration of the world of pharmaceuticals, hospitals and more specially in recent times to the radiology department, this due to the personal links I have there through family members. The colour of hospital waiting rooms, the sight of medical equipment and textures of the hospital are something I try to replicate in my work to create an immersive experience for the viewer.

My practice is very process based, with the journey of producing the final work being as important as the final work itself. The making process of my pieces is often labour intensive - with repetitive, tedious and sometimes painful methods required to create them. These time consuming processes are a means of catharsis for myself, allowing me to use my art to channel complexities in my life. CONTACT W : www.niamhmccarthyfineart.com I : @niamherinart

I started out by looking at the Christian art movement over the centuries, studying the decryptions and coding that have been placed in the altarpieces and paintings. Symbolism and colours have always been used to help tell stories. I am having a time of discovery and experimenting putting them together to create coded abstract work.

This I believe is true of my organic process of layering and gestural work. Each and every canvas conceals a unique hidden narrative.

I have now added alongside these a Neuroscience and Biblical theory, that is, that we as humans thrive and feel secure with Boundaries and with Limitations.

My Art feeds my Soul.

My art is an expression of my inner emotions and faith. One might call me a Process Painter using colour and multi disciplines of processing to convey an inner conversation with the painting and myself.

Oscar Murillo Turner Prize winning Artist describes some of his work as “ a manifestation of an attitude, which is larger than one’s self”.

I am an artist who finds the most mundane aspects of modern life beautiful. My current art and poetry explores my hometown of Littlehampton; from architectural history, to local narratives and first hand experiences. In an urban environment I think it is important to process change and to remember, or even mourn, buildings or spaces that resonate with people’s collective memories.

This project has been greatly influenced by the practice of psychogeography, chiefly the writings of Iain Sinclair and the films of Patrick Keiller. Due to the circumstances of the pandemic, I have researched using the online sources of the town’s museum and newspaper, and filled in the gaps of information with my own personal experiences.

The character of a town can change with the loss of architecture and I find this is particularly true with Littlehampton. Over the last 20 years Albert Road and Terminus Road have lost a historic theatre, two pubs and an indoor market. Through cardboard maquettes and a short film I have recreated some of the buildings I remember from my growing up in the town.

Albert and Terminus is an exploration into urban history and the memory of place.

Over the past 3 years I have experimented with different concepts of digital collage, resulting in finding the most pleasure in designing and editing photographs of myself to mimic fashion advertisements. My work is inspired by brands such as Moschino, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada, as well as magazines such as Vogue and I.D. My Current work focuses on digitally edited photos of myself modelling with photoshopped text and images over the top to imitate promotional images of brands. I am also exploring creating images which blend 2 or more fashion brands together, as well as incorporating neon colours and signs into my work. I like to express my own personality and feelings through my work by using aspects like animal print, neon, colours and patterns. My installations are where I feel I can really bring my work to life, creating different backgrounds for it to be displayed on as well as presenting it along side colourful lights and interesting objects which have relation to my practice and help me tell the story I am trying to tell.

charley stevens I would categorize myself as an interdisciplinary artist; this means I use a variety of skills to create different pieces of work using different materials/skills such as painting, drawing and photography. Currently a lot of my work focuses on the people who are closest to me such as family and friends. I find painting them not only gives them a sense of pride in knowing that they are the subject of someone’s work, it also brings me a lot of pride to know they trust in me to recreate their likeness both flatteringly and with great quality. In turn, this would allow me to proudly display this in a gallery for others to see but also them in their home. I also paint the people that I love in hopes that this will help others and themselves to see them how I do and to hopefully also see the light that I hold them in.

The mask for me is the symbol of the Pandemic and is a very divisive subject. In a hospital environment it is seen as pure and clean and a safety net to protect you from the virus, but juxtaposed with a discarded mask on a pathway or in a car park and it is immediately seen as a disgusting and dirty throwaway object. I love collections of items, pattern and repetition, and like to use collected groupings of the items I am researching in my work. I am a multi-disciplinary artist and through my photography, collage, cyanotype and sculpture I have been formulating my ideas and feelings about masks through my work, manipulating them in different ways, sometimes identifiable, sometimes unrecognisable, or in its natural form which is very sculptural.

rachel worsley It also made me realise how under-valued they are, having saved many lives - we’ll never truly know how many. By changing their appearance I hope that you can see them as the valuable objects that they are. The mask is a phenomenon that isn’t going away anytime soon, an item that we cannot be without, but is so easily used and thrown away.
