PROUDLY PRESENTING AT THE BAFTA SCOTLAND 2014 AWARDS Bodegas Campillo Barrel Fermented Rioja Blanco, Rioja, Spain
Widely regarded as one of the very finest barrel-fermented white Riojas produced, many white Burgundy addicts have been won over by this wine. It has rich and complex aromas of sweet spice and white peach, with a multi-layered palate given weight by extended lees ageing. This is framed by a backbone of fresh acidity which balances well with the other flavours.
Sios Cau del Gat 2010, D.O. Costers del Segre, Spain
From a little-known part of Catalonia just starting to become big news in the wine world, this blend of Garnacha and Syrah from the Cau del Gat single vineyard is aged for nine months in new French Oak and is a wine lovingly handcrafted by their young female winemaker. She is making a name for herself and the wines of Sios, which have received a whole host of medals this year in international competitions.

AS THE NEW CHAIR OF BAFTA SCOTLAND IT’S AN HONOUR TO WELCOME YOU TO THE BRITISH ACADEMY SCOTLAND AWARDS 2014.
It’s really exciting to be part of this inspirational, internationally recognised organisation, especially on a night like tonight when we are celebrating and rewarding the best of our film, television and games talent in Scotland. Scotland has been front and centre of the World agenda this year. The Referendum, the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup have filled our screens and fuelled our imaginations so it is fitting that Hazel Irvine, one of our greatest sports presenters, who worked across both the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup has agreed to host our awards. It has been a momentous year for Scotland’s screen industries. The calibre of nominations across the categories is testament to this. We have internationally acclaimed box office hits; A-list Hollywood stars and games that have taken not just the UK, but the world by storm. If we want the Scottish industry to continue to flourish we need it to be diverse in every sense, from our talent on and off screen to our output. A lack of entries in scripted television drama meant we were not able to run this important category this year. I believe to create a really vibrant Scottish
industry, there needs to be a focus on reviving scripted content in Scotland. As co-owner of a Scottish independent production company I am passionate about the industry in Scotland and acutely aware of how important it is to nurture and encourage talent and excellence here. As Chair I hope to work with BAFTA Scotland in their efforts to encourage talent from all backgrounds, from all over Scotland. Following Lenny Henry’s powerful BAFTA lecture and a BAFTA-wide initiative to act on it, the BAFTA Scotland committee have set up a working group to look at what we can do to encourage diversity on and off screen in Scotland. We are already making a difference. We have staged key events including a BAFTA Scotland Panel on diversity; Vocation, Vocation, Vocation, where 10 industry experts introduced 16-25 year olds to television and film; Y not Jam, a women-only game jam, plus we are doing more and more outreach work in colleges and universities across the nation. The New Talent Awards go from strength to strength,
attracting hundreds of entries from a real cross-section of society. In addition we’ve run numerous master-classes, panel sessions and Q&As. Highlights include a masterclass on Gogglebox, Stuart Aitken on Animation and Hamish Hamilton on multi-camera directing, not to mention preview screenings of Outlander and Doctor Who. As BAFTA we are privileged to have a voice that can provide a platform to promote change and encourage excellence. My ambition as Chair is to help take the organisation from strength to strength. I would encourage media professionals to join BAFTA, get involved in our events and help us make a difference. A big thank you to everyone at BAFTA Scotland, our colleagues at BAFTA in London, all our partners, suppliers and volunteers for working tirelessly to give us an awards ceremony to be proud of. I would like to congratulate all our nominees and wish them the best of luck. I hope you all have a fantastic evening. Sarah Walmsley Chair BAFTA Scotland
A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE BRITISH ACADEMY SCOTLAND AWARDS 2014.
The Awards celebrate and reward excellence for Scottish practitioners working in British productions and British practitioners in Scottish productions; they recognise, honour and reward individuals and productions for their outstanding achievement across the country’s thriving screen industries.
Gordon Napier is among our Prince William Scholars this year – and Breakthrough Brits, which includes Katie Leung, the talented Scottish actress who deserves wider recognition. We actively campaign to support young creative people, with Give Something Back; visit bafta.org to find out how you can help.
BAFTA’s charitable work isn’t solely about rewarding the best, and inspiring others to achieve. It’s about broadening the horizons of young people. Our year-round learning and events activity ensures that the most talented aren’t dissuaded from considering careers in film, television or games, whatever their background. With more than 250 events a year, our learning activity sits at the very heart of BAFTA’s mission. This year’s initiatives include our scholarships – Scotland’s
We are indebted to our many partners and volunteers, as well as the hard work of our staff, who help deliver this event. I am also grateful to the BAFTA Scotland Committee, led by Chair Sarah Walmsley, and to all the jurors who have the difficult task of deciding who will take home the Scotland awards tonight. Congratulations to all the nominees for their outstanding achievements: you uphold the gold standard that is the British
Academy Scotland Awards. Your commitment to excellence continues to raise the bar for our screen industries in Scotland. Have a wonderful evening. Anne Morrison Chair British Academy of Film and Television Arts

INDUSTRY COMMENT
If you were an alien trying to get an insight into Scotland – possibly the latest incarnation of Doctor Who tempted to trace the heritage of his accent – what sort of conclusions could you draw from our current roster of film, television and game nominees? It would be hard to miss our love of dipping into the past (From Scotland With Love, I Belong to Glasgow, Dream Me Up Scotty), or our close family ties (Katie Morag). Even an alien who fails to notice that alien invasions target London and Cardiff but never Glasgow, Edinburgh or Inverness, would grasp our nuanced fascination with violence (Starred Up), along with an equally ferocious passion for joyous celebrations (Sunshine On Leith). Our dark, surreal vein of humour (Limmy’s Show, Filth, Miller’s Mountain) is unmistakable, perhaps rooted in an awareness of how quickly
life can unravel (David Tennant in The Escape Artist, James McAvoy in Filth, Mark Bonnar in Line of Duty). We’re a nation at ease with our contradictions: drawn to images of seamy glamour (Grand Theft Auto V), yet with a sense that justice should be pursued, no matter how many ferries it takes (Shetland). Alien eyes might not take in the full picture however. One of this year’s factual series nominees, The Story of Women and Art, asked thoughtful questions about the relative invisibility of women when it comes to creating art, suggesting that the problems included lack of confidence, role models and a critical mass. We have powerhouses like Slate’s Andrea Calderwood, Sigma’s Gillian Berrie, Black Camel’s Arabella Page-Croft, and Jacqueline Sinclair, responsible for excellent work on Limmy’s shows, yet there remains a noticeable lack of
women writing and directing. Lynne Ramsay, Morag MacKinnon, Sue Bourne and May Miles Thomas are gifted auteurs, Andrea Gibb is one of our most fluent screenwriters, but you can’t help hoping that they will be joined by others, or an alien might consider them something of an endangered species. Worse still: the non-white Scottish experience barely registers at all, and if Scotland doesn’t respond to changing audience demographics and the growing demand for multicultural content in our culture, it’s not just obdurate, it’s a wasted opportunity. However 2014 was also the year that Calderwood’s Slate Films produced Half a Yellow Sun, an ambitious epic which took in both an intimate rivalry between two sisters, and the Nigerian civil war. It’s a hopeful film, imaginatively blending a diversity of talent from Scotland, Britain and Nigeria.
Post-Referendum seems an ideal time to both reflect and interrogate changes in Scotland. There is much to discuss, and I admit I’m looking forward to a slew of indyref dramas. It also chimes with a new industry trend indicating that international audiences are turning away from Hollywood products, and seeking more local cinema: many of the highest-grossing films in European territories last year were domestic products rather than US franchise titles. Could this also be a time for Scotland to draw on its vast literary resources? We already have an adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Doric classic Sunset Song in the works - and the success of Starz’ drama series Outlander, which has occupied many Scots both in front and behind the camera, suggests that an American audience also welcomes Scots stories, dressed to kilt. On Skye, Young Films hope to
adapt Neil Gunn’s The Silver Darlings, undeterred by its “unfilmable” reputation; so surely it’s time for someone to rise to the challenge of Alistair Gray’s mighty Lanark, or attempt to lasso an established appetite for period thrillers by making Confessions of a Justified Sinner. 2014 has been a time of great change for the country, with unmistakable challenges for our creative community, but the quality of tonight’s nominees reassures us that, like the Tardis, Scotland’s talent exceeds its dimensions.
