CROESO

Mae’n bleser gennym eich croesawu i Wobrau BAFTA Cymru, sy’n dathlu storïwyr eithriadol ein hoes yn ogystal â’r crefftau creadigol sydd wedi cynhyrchu’r ffilmiau a’r rhaglenni teledu a gyfoethogodd ein diwylliant yn ystod y flwyddyn ddiwethaf.

Mae’r rhestr drawiadol – sy’n cynnwys llawer o bobl a enwebwyd am y tro cyntaf – yn crisialu dawn gynhenid Cymru am adrodd storïau gwreiddiol a hudolus. Llongyfarchiadau i bawb.

Mae derbynyddion ein dwy Wobr Arbennig yn enghreifftiau rhagorol o hyn: mae gyrfa ryfeddol yr actor Mark Lewis Jones yn llawn perfformiadau cyfareddol gartref ac yn rhyngwladol; tra bod y cynhyrchydd Julie Gardner MBE wedi bod yn ffigur allweddol yn natblygiad diwydiant sgrin Cymru ers dau ddegawd ac yn chwifio baner Cymru â balchder yn yr

Unol Daleithiau, o’i chartref bellach yn LA, fel cydsylfaenydd Bad Wolf.

Mae BAFTA Cymru yn credu’n gryf mewn rôl Cymru fel canolfan greadigol ddynamig. Mae popeth a wnawn – o’n rhaglen brysur o ddigwyddiadau i’n cynulliadau rhwydweithio newydd yn Cardiff Townhouse Coppa Club (a gynhelir ar ddydd Llun cyntaf bob mis) – yn ceisio meithrin y creadigrwydd hwnnw, rhannu arfer gorau, sicrhau chwarae teg, ffurfio cymuned fywiog a llawer mwy. Helpwch ni i wneud gwahaniaeth trwy ymuno â ni ar y daith hollbwysig hon.

Diolch i bawb sy’n gwneud y Gwobrau hyn yn bosibl.

ANGHARAD

WELCOME

We’re delighted to welcome you to the BAFTA Cymru Awards, celebrating the outstanding storytellers of our time as well as the creative crafts that have produced the films and TV that enriched our culture this past year. The impressive line-up – which includes many first-time nominees – encapsulates Wales’ inherent talent for original and captivating storytelling. Congratulations to all!

Our two Special Award recipients are fine exemplars of this: actor Mark Lewis Jones’ extraordinary career is brimming with mesmerising performances both at home and internationally; while producer Julie Gardner MBE has been a key player in Wales’ screen industry development for two decades and, now based in LA, proudly flies the Welsh flag in the US as co-founder of Bad Wolf.

At BAFTA Cymru, we firmly believe in Wales’ role as a dynamic creative hub. Everything we do – from our packed programme of events to our new networking get-togethers at Cardiff Townhouse Coppa Club (held the first Monday of every month) – is geared towards fostering that creativity, sharing best practice, levelling the playing field, cultivating a vibrant community and much more. Help us to make a difference by joining us on this vital journey.

Thank you to everyone who makes these Awards possible.

MARK LEWIS JONES

GWOBR SIÂN PHILLIPS

Nid yw’n syndod bod gan rywun sy’n cael ei anrhydeddu gan wobr arbennig restr ryfeddol o gydnabyddiaethau sgrin, ac mae hynny’n sicr yn wir am dderbynnydd

Gwobr Siân Phillips eleni, Mark Lewis Jones. Mae cipolwg cyflym trwy restr yr actor a anwyd yn Sir Ddinbych o 140 o ffilmiau, gemau a chyfresi teledu uchel eu clod yn dangos pa mor ddisglair a dylanwadol y bu ei yrfa.

Mae’n ymestyn ymhell y tu hwnt i gyfresi poblogaidd o Gymru fel Stella (2012-2017), Keeping Faith/Un Bore Mercher (2017-2021) ac Y Sw  n (2023), i’r fath bethau â Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), Robin Hood (2010) a Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017). Ychwanegwch at y rheiny gyfresi teledu enfawr fel 55 Degrees North (2005), The Crown, Chernobyl (y ddwy yn 2019), Outlander (2022-2023) ac un o bynciau trafod mwyaf llosg eleni, Baby Reindeer (2024), a’r gemau Dragon Age II (2011) a The Witcher 2 a 3 (2011, 2015) a ganmolwyd gan feirniaid.

O’r beiddgar a’r heriol i’r poblogaidd a’r brif ffrwd, mae talent eithriadol Jones yn serennu bob amser. Fe’i cydnabuwyd gan BAFTA Cymru o’r blaen: enillodd ar gyfer The Passing/ Yr Ymadawiad (2015) a chafodd ei enwebu ar gyfer The Bench (2001-2002), Baker Boys (2011), Stella, The Lighthouse (2016), Keeping Faith/Un Bore Mercher a Gangs of London (2020).

Ddim yn ffôl i rywun nad oedd ganddo awydd i actio pan oedd yn ifanc yn Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, ac a ddarbwyllwyd yn y pen draw gan ei athro drama i gymryd rhan mewn drama ysgol pan oedd yn 16 oed. Ac yntau wedi dal y byg, ymunodd â Theatr Ieuenctid Clwyd yn yr Wyddgrug cyn hyfforddi’n ffurfiol yng Ngholeg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru yng Nghaerdydd.

Portread | Portrait: Cat Arwel

Delweddau | Images: Courtesy of BBC Cymru Wales; Severn Screen/Warren Orchard

Dilynwyd hynny gan gyfnodau gyda Chwmni Brenhinol Shakespeare ac yn theatr The Globe cyn i’r sgrin alw.

Dywed Jones:

“Mae’n fraint fawr i mi dderbyn y wobr hon yn enw rhywun sydd wedi dangos cymaint o ddewrder a dycnwch drwy gydol ei gyrfa ryfeddol. Rwy’n mawr

obeithio y galla’ i ddefnyddio’r llwyfan hwn i helpu ac ysbrydoli pobl eraill i wireddu eu breuddwydion.”

SIÂN PHILLIPS AWARD

It’s hardly surprising that a special award honouree has an incredible roster of screen credits, and this is no less true of this year’s Siân Phillips Award recipient, Mark Lewis Jones. A quick glance through the Denbighshire-born actor’s 140-strong roll call of acclaimed films, games and TV series illustrates just how outstanding and impactful his career has been.

It stretches far beyond such homegrown hits as Stella (2012-2017), Keeping Faith/Un Bore Mercher (2017-2021) and Y Sw  n (2023), with the likes of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), Robin Hood (2010) and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017). Add to this such TV juggernauts as 55 Degrees North (2005), The Crown, Chernobyl (both 2019), Outlander (2022-2023) and, one of this year’s hottest watercooler series, Baby Reindeer (2024), and critically acclaimed games Dragon Age II (2011) and The Witcher 2 and 3 (2011, 2015).

From the bold and the challenging to the popular and mainstream, Jones’ exceptional talent always shines through. He’s been recognised by BAFTA Cymru previously: winning for The Passing/Yr Ymadawiad (2015) and earning nods for The Bench (2001-2002), Baker Boys (2011), Stella, The Lighthouse (2016), Keeping Faith/Un Bore Mercher and Gangs of London (2020).

Not bad for someone who expressed no desire to act as a youth at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, whose drama teacher eventually convinced the 16-year-old Jones to take part in a school play. The bug caught, he joined the Clywd Youth Theatre in Mold before training formally at Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Stints with the Royal Shakespeare Company and at The Globe followed before the screen beckoned.

Jones says:

“I feel very honoured to receive this award in the name of someone who has shown such courage and tenacity throughout her extraordinary career. I hope dearly that I will be able to use this platform to help and inspire others to realise their dreams.”

JULIE GARDNER MBE

CYFRANIAD ARBENNIG

I’R BYD TELEDU

Er y byddai’n annheg honni bod unrhyw berson unigol yn gyfrifol am ddadeni Cymru fel canolfan ddynamig ar gyfer cynhyrchu ffilmiau a rhaglenni teledu rhyngwladol, ’does dim dadlau y bu Julie Gardner yn rhan allweddol o’r stori lwyddiant fodern hon. Roedd y cynhyrchydd a’r comisiynydd a anwyd yng Nglyn-nedd yn allweddol i ail-lansio Doctor Who yng Nghaerdydd, gyda’r awdur Russell T Davies wrth y llyw, a sbardunodd uchelgeisiau sgrin Cymru yn uniongyrchol o ganol y blynyddoedd 2000 ymlaen. Enillodd rôl arweiniol Gardner MBE haeddiannol iddi yn 2014.

Dechreuodd gyrfa Gardner yn y BBC, ond ei chyfnod o dair blynedd fel cynhyrchydd datblygu yn LWT o 2000 a fu’n arbennig o fuddiol. Yno, cysylltodd â Davies i ddatblygu drama wedi’i seilio ar fywyd Giacomo Casanova. Pan ddenwyd Gardner yn ôl i’r BBC fel pennaeth drama ar gyfer BBC Wales yn 2003, daeth â Davies a Casanova (2005) gyda hi. Y tu hwnt i lwyddiant Doctor Who, roedd Gardner hefyd yn comisiynu rhaglenni arobryn fel The Girl in the Café (2005) a Life on Mars (2006-2007). Daeth llwyddiant pellach yn sgil symud i’r Unol Daleithiau a BBC Worldwide Productions yn 2009, gyda thri thymor o Da Vinci’s Demons (2013-2015) yn cael eu cynhyrchu yng Nghymru.

Mae’n amlwg nad yw Gardner yn ofni gwneud penderfyniadau beiddgar, uchelgeisiol a gweddnewidiol. Yn 2015, ffurfiodd bartneriaeth â’i chyn-bennaeth yn y BBC a BBC Worldwide Productions, sef Jane Tranter, i lansio cwmni cynhyrchu Bad Wolf. Yno, cynhyrchodd I Hate Suzie (2020-2022) a enillodd lawer o wobrau, Red Eye (2024) sy’n boblogaidd ymhlith cynulleidfaoedd ar hyn o bryd ar ITV, The Winter King (2023) ac, yn briodol, Doctor Who (2023-). Mae Gardner wrthi’n

Delweddau | Images: Ray Burmiston/BBC Studios

cynhyrchu The War Between the Land and the Sea. Ers 2018, mae Gardner wedi bod yn rhedeg Bad Wolf America, a lansiodd ei gynhyrchiad cyntaf ar gyfer Apple+, sef Lady in the Lake, yn gynharach yn 2024.

Dywed Gardner:

“Roedd fy magwraeth yng Nglyn-nedd wedi dangos gwerth gwaith caled, hiwmor mewn adegau anodd a chred mewn cymuned i mi. Mae gweithio yng Nghaerdydd fel pennaeth drama yn BBC Wales ac fel cydsylfaenydd Bad Wolf wedi dangos i mi, flwyddyn ar ôl blwyddyn, fod gan Gymru y gweithlu mwyaf dawnus, dyfeisgar ac ymroddedig o unrhyw wlad.

Mae’n fraint derbyn y wobr hon, sy’n eiddo i’r cast a’r criwiau sydd wedi gwneud Cymru yn bwerdy creadigol ers tro.”

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO TELEVISION

While it would be unjust to claim that any one person was responsible for Wales’ renaissance as a dynamic centre for international film and television production, there’s no arguing that Julie Gardner was a principal part of this modern success story. The Glynneath-born producer and commissioner was central to bringing the relaunch of Doctor Who to Cardiff, with writer Russell T Davies at the helm, which directly kickstarted Wales’ screen ambitions from the mid-2000s onwards. Gardner’s leading role deservedly earned her an MBE in 2014.

Gardner’s career began at the BBC, but it was her three-year stint as development producer at LWT from 2000 that proved providential. Here, she sought out Davies to develop a drama based on the life of Giacomo Casanova. When Gardner was tempted back to the BBC as head of drama for BBC Wales in

2003, she brought Davies and Casanova (2005) with her. Beyond Doctor Who’s success, Gardner was also commissioning such award winners as The Girl in the Café (2005) and Life on Mars (20062007). A move to the US and BBC Worldwide Productions in 2009 saw further success, with three seasons of Da Vinci’s Demons (2013-2015) produced in Wales.

Gardner clearly has no problem making bold, ambitious and life-changing decisions. In 2015, she teamed up with her former BBC and BBC Worldwide Productions boss, Jane Tranter, to launch production company Bad Wolf. Here, she has produced the multi award-winning I Hate Suzie (2020-2022), current ITV audience-winner Red Eye (2024), The Winter King (2023) and, fittingly, Doctor Who (2023-). Gardner is currently in production on The War Between the Land and the Sea. Since 2018, Gardner has run Bad Wolf America, which earlier in 2024 launched its first production for Apple+, Lady in the Lake Gardner says:

“Growing up in Glynneath showed me the value of hard work, humour in tough times and belief in community. Working in Cardiff as head of drama at BBC Wales and co-founding Bad Wolf has shown me, year after year, that Wales has the most talented, inventive, committed workforce of any nation. It is a privilege to receive this award, which belongs to the cast and crews who have long made Wales a creative powerhouse.”
