WELCOME 2021 Welcome to the BAFTA Scotland Awards 2021 – Scotland’s Screen Industries night of the year. At the time of last year’s Awards there was a hint of optimism that 2021 would deliver an early move towards a form of normality. As things turned out it’s been a year where such progress has been slow. However, the sector has proved remarkably resilient and creative in its response to the continuing pandemic. Within the constraints imposed by Covid protocols, production activity has steadily increased across the country in the course of the year. In particular, 2021 saw the first production making use of the long anticipated new film and TV studio complex in Leith and the announcement of further infrastructure investments. Along with additional commitments from broadcasters to source content from out of London, the future looks bright for the film, television and games industry in Scotland. The BAFTA Scotland team has continued to offer great support during 2021 for the film, games and television industries. Members, our new talent cohorts and the general public have been able to enjoy our online screenings and events programme and Guru Live Glasgow was delivered digitally alongside our fellow Celts BAFTA Cymru in the Spring. Thank you for your continued support during these difficult times we really appreciate every one of you.
Special thanks to BAFTA Scotland Director, Jude MacLaverty and the brilliant BAFTA Scotland team: Jenna Cunningham, Laura Kelly, Arlen Barke, Becca McDonagh, Karen Rosie and farewell to Beverley McMillan who left BAFTA Scotland after 8 years. Our thanks also go to BBC Scotland, STV, Channel 4 and Screen Scotland we are extremely grateful for their continuing core support. We also want to thank Krishnendu Majumdar; Chair of BAFTA, Amanda Berry; CEO, Kevin Price; COO and all of our BAFTA colleagues for their ongoing advice and help. Despite all the issues of the last 18 months I hope you’ll agree that this year’s list of nominees is impressive in its range and strength and I would urge you to raise a toast to their achievements as we already look forward to getting together in person in 2022. On behalf of BAFTA Scotland, congratulations to you all, enjoy tonight’s ceremony.

A W A R M WELCOME It’s with great pleasure that I welcome you to this year’s BAFTA Scotland Awards, celebrating the very best talent and productions in Scotland from July 2020 to July 2021. Your exceptional work can be the catalyst to inspire the next generation. Supporting new and emerging talent – helping them find their way and express themselves creatively – whatever their background, is central to BAFTA’s guiding ethos. It is vital that we take a leading role in helping build an inclusive and diverse industry of talented people. Informed by the crucial findings of our 2020 BAFTA Review, we have developed ambitious plans for the future of our learning and talent development programme. We aim to engage more than 10m people online and equip 80,000 with the tools to develop a career in the screen arts. The redevelopment of our headquarters will play a key part in this enhanced programme, allowing us to host a greater variety of events that can be streamed live for everyone to access and enjoy. BAFTA 195, which officially reopens in early 2022, will be the central hub for our global activities, providing us with the facilities to help impact the lives of more potential talent and engage the public, wherever they may live.
I would like to thank tonight’s host Edith Bowman, our guest presenters and category jurors. I would also like to extend my gratitude to BAFTA Scotland Chair Ewan Angus and the Committee. Finally, thanks to all partners who have supported the Awards this year. There’s nothing quite like our industries. When at their best, they are a powerful and positive force. These Awards celebrate that and I congratulate all of this year’s nominees.
