Over the past 12 months, the quality of children’s productions – now delivered in a myriad of ways, from very warm welcome the living room television to the handheld in our pocket – has been to this year’s British Academy a testament to the tenacity of this Children’s Awards, BAFTA’s industry; its commitment to lofty standards despite the enduring annual celebration of the best challenges of the business. In this in children’s film, television, respect, the achievements honoured tonight are all the more impressive. games and digital media, and the Children love being entertained. extraordinary talent behind them. They don’t mind being educated either, with great stories and largerthan-life characters. But the dynamics of social media and mobile devices are shifting audience expectations, and entertainment is being consumed in ways unlike ever before. The children’s industry has proven its resilience with the changing sands of viewing habits; it has always been among the first to adapt, and stay on the front foot. Creativity shines through each and every one of tonight’s categories, whose nominees have taken the risks and aspired to excellence. They inspire others – peers, the industry at large, and the thousands of talented young people out there considering careers in film, television or games. Congratulations on your incredible achievement, and thank you for continuing to create and excite. A perfect example of this is this year’s Special Award recipient. Throughout his career, Peter Firmin
has brought the most marvellous creations into our homes and straight into the national consciousness. These wonderful characters include my personal favourite, The Clangers, which is surely among the strangest and most loveable of children’s creations – all without saying a word. In 2014, our BAFTA Kids activity has gone from strength to strength. Engaging young audiences with our year-round programme of events up and down the country, BAFTA Kids has educated and inspired children with special showcases featuring their favourite presenters and series. Earlier today, we hosted a masterclass and red carpet event for children here at the Roundhouse, bringing the two worlds together – the industry and the audience it serves. Engaging with diverse audiences is an essential part of BAFTA’s charitable remit, and we couldn’t do it without the generous support of our partners. My thanks to Harvey Elliott, chairman of the Children’s Committee, the expert juries who selected the nominations and chose our winners, and the BAFTA staff, including Siobhan Pridgeon and Clare Brown. Also many thanks to Doc Brown – tonight’s host, a multitalented British entertainer and the creator of the BAFTA-nominated 4 O’Clock Club. In the coming year, please consider how you might contribute to our learning activity, through mentoring, scholarships, masterclasses, debates and lectures. Learn more about our Give Something Back campaign at bafta.org. Have a wonderful evening. ANNE MORRISON Chair of the Academy

SPECIAL AWARD
PETER FIRMIN “

W
e were never trendy,” asserts this year’s Special Award winner, Peter Firmin. “We did what we thought was right. If you’re never trendy, you never go out of fashion.” He’s right – Peter Firmin’s work was never trendy. It was exceptional. His children’s television programmes for Smallfilms with Oliver Postgate – active from 1959 into the mid-1980s – are also timeless: The Clangers, Bagpuss, Noggin the Nog and, of course, Ivor the Engine. Any child of that era remembers at least one, and most likely all, of those names. “We were earning a living,” says Firmin of Smallfilms’ prolific output. “Oliver and I were working on our own with a few helpers and we just had to keep going. There wasn’t an enormous fortune to be made because the budgets were pretty small in those days. We just had to keep coming up with ideas. We never thought that we were producing things for generations to come.”
Idris. Professor Yaffle. Thor Nogson. The Soup Dragon. If those names evoke a warm sense of nostalgia then you are most definitely a fan of tonight’s Special Award recipient, Peter Firmin. His 30-year creative partnership with Oliver Postgate produced some of the UK’s most original, beloved and timeless children’s television ever produced, as Rich Matthews discovers… But that is exactly what they did – almost from the moment that Postgate recruited hard-up art teacher Firmin to “illustrate a television story”, the pair began to make history. “I was only ever Oliver’s ‘maker’, I made things for him,” says Firmin. “I like making things and drawing. Smallfilms gave me the opportunity to do it for 30 years.” What they did for those 30 years, the guiding principle that made their work so enduring, was make programmes the way they thought they should be made. “We were both fathers, so we knew what we thought children wanted and what entertained them,” explains Firmin. “Oliver never deliberately tried to please them. He just did what he thought was good for them. His work was so inspiring – it made me want to draw and make the puppets and do all the things that I did. “Oliver came up with the first stories – Alexander the Mouse and Ivor, things like that – and, later on, Noggin

was my idea, and Bagpuss. Just the characters, mind you; he wrote the stories. Because we worked together so well, they just seemed to work. And we weren’t working for a committee. Nowadays, they have to have things very carefully vetted with lots of input from other people; whereas we were allowed to do what we thought was best. Considering how primitive our methods were and how homemade everything was, it’s amazing that they’ve lasted so long and people still remember them.” With The Clangers currently being remade for yet another generation by Smallfilms, now under the auspices of Oliver Postgate’s son, Daniel, does receiving an accolade like the Special Award make Firmin yearn to make more programmes? “I am involved with the new Clangers; they occasionally ask me for sketches, ideas and the like, but now I’m quite happy to let them get on with it,”
"Considering how homemade everything was É it's amazing that they've lasted so long and people still remember them."

he chuckles. “At 85, you don’t really have ambitions. You just hope to enjoy what you’re doing. I still do occasional prints and things – which was my first love. I’m a bit nervous about getting the award, because I’m basically happiest in the shed making things and I’m not used to going to these big events. I’m very honoured, but the idea that what we did entered people’s consciousness and has lasted so long is quite amazing to me.” As Bagpuss’ narrator might say: And so their work was done…

KIDS To help children and young people understand exactly what it takes to earn a Children’s Award nomination, BAFTA has taken to the road to educate and entertain families all over the UK…
C
an you guess how much a BAFTA award weighs in jelly beans? No? Then you need to pay more attention to our dedicated BAFTA Kids strand, because the answer (given at the end of this article, by the way) was just one of the fun competitions that we ran as part of our year-round learning programme aimed at children. This dedicated strand of events showcases Children’s Award winners and nominees, helping young people understand the skills, dedication and knowledge that go into creating their favourite films, television shows and games. It’s also a lot of fun. Launched last November, our BAFTA Kids: Behind The Scenes showcase, supported by The

Hobson Charity, hit the road in 2014, making appearances at such festivals as Cinemagic, the Bradford Animation Festival, Framed, Leeds Young Film Festival and Soho Create. For its young audiences, these roadshows can be an eye-opening and inspirational experience, hopefully stimulating interest in exploring their own creativity. Among the guest speakers have been such talented practitioners as Sam Watts (composer for Wizards Vs Aliens); Chris Tichborne and Tim Jones (animation director and lead puppeteer of Strange Hill High respectively); the creators of The Amazing World of Gumball; and Annika Bluhm (showrunner on Postman Pat). Hosts of the 90-minute events have included
Ben Shires, Katie Thistleton, Bobby Lockwood and Naomi Wilkinson, among others. So far, so good. Children are the harshest critics, so we know we must be doing something right when young people like London showcase attendee Hafizah, aged 11, says his biggest criticism was, “Nothing! Everything was brilliant,” or 10-year-old Aideen from Belfast, who cheerfully exclaimed: “I loved it all!” The future of our industries relies upon nurturing and developing new talent, and there’s no better way to start this than at the grassroots level. Another initiative introduced in 2014 was a children’s strand of the BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum,
Clockwise from opposite: Ben Shires and Katie Thistleton hosted our Belfast event; puppeteer Tim Jones demonstrates operating Strange Hill High’s Mitchell at the Cinemagic London Barbican event; young attendees let their imaginations run wild; host Naomi Wilkinson with Postman Pat’s Annika Bluhm and Glynn Hayward, from design agency Complete Control; our children’s hospice screening of Muppets Most Wanted in Glasgow
supported by the London Book Fair, which seeks to find new and original voices in children’s writing for film and television. We also have a range of inspirational and informative videos hosted on our dedicated BAFTA Kids YouTube channel. BAFTA runs other children’s activities too, such as our special hospice screenings at Christmas and Easter. Made possible by the fundraising efforts of BAFTA members who run the Virgin London Marathon each year, these exclusive screenings are for children with life-limiting conditions and their families. This December, screenings are planned for Birmingham, Cardiff and Glasgow. Looking further ahead, we are already busy planning our children’s activities for 2015, with the BAFTA Kids: Behind The Scenes showcase visiting events across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Keep an eye on our website, particularly our BAFTA Kids’ Vote site (see over), for more details. Answer: A BAFTA mask is the same weight as 2,800 jelly beans, or 3.7kg.

BAFTA KIDS' VOTE The BAFTA Kids’ Vote was designed to give a voice to the moving image’s most honest and vocal critics: children. The Kids’ Vote format and voting system has changed over the years since its introduction in 1998, but its aim has always been the same: to allow young people to vote for their favourite films, television series, games and websites. All children in the UK aged between 7 and 14 years are eligible to take part, with almost 400,000 votes polled in 2013 and a similar figure expected this year (voting was still open as this brochure went to print). The BAFTA Kids’ Vote website has been revamped over the past year, with the aim of expanding its remit beyond the voting mechanic, with fun games, quizzes, videos and photo galleries adding to its colourful, energetic and welcoming design. A recent competition to design a new member of the BAFTA Kids’ Vote posse – the cute characters that adorn the site (and pictured here) – has drawn hundreds of very creative entries. Visit the site and see for yourself: www.baftakidsvote.org
