Welcome to the British Academy Children's Awards
A
very warm welcome to this year’s British Academy Children’s Awards, our annual celebration of excellence in children’s media. Congratulations to all those nominated this evening – your incredible work continues to inform, entertain and inspire. The myriad forms of children’s media influenced the design of our cover artwork this year, a kaleidoscopic representation of this evolving artform. This ever-changing landscape of shapes and images stimulates the imagination, just as the best children’s media does. As children’s entertainment continues to push the boundaries of film, games and television, so must BAFTA evolve. To that end, we have updated the Awards’ categories this year to best reflect the industry. Children’s media nurtures creativity, as well as highlights more serious social issues facing the young. Few people better represent both of these aspects than the recipient of our Special Award, Nikki Lilly. Despite extraordinary personal challenges, Nikki’s outstanding bravery, compassion and understanding serve as an example to both young and old alike. She is a shining example of how to use media to light the way for others and, as the youngest ever recipient of this award, she is a true trailblazer. This year’s ceremony is divided into three parts, each one hosted by well-known faces from children’s media. They will be highlighting the wealth of activities of BAFTA Kids, our year-round programme of learning events and initiatives. We’d like to offer our thanks to those of you who have generously given your time and support to help children and young people discover amazing new content, be inspired and maybe even follow a possible future career path. If you can assist us with this vital work in any way, please do get in touch. Have a wonderful evening. ¥

THE SPECIAL AWARD
Nikki Lilly In a time where social issues affecting future generations have dominated the news and the current zeitgeist, BAFTA’s Special Award recipient this year is prominent British vlogger, YouTuber and television presenter Nikki Lilly – the first time the award has been given to a teenager. Her pioneering work raising awareness about such issues as disability, cyber bullying, mental health and a lot more serves as an inspiration to children, young people and adults alike. words by rich matthews

ife isn’t always unicorns and rainbows. To get to the rainbow, you have to go through the rain.” Nikki Lilly has lived through enough challenges in her 15 years to say this with conviction, and yet, in a daily display of resilience, empathy and strength, she is out in the world sharing her feelings to hopefully help others. “I’m just doing all that I can to help people feel a little less alone,” she says. “There’s a lot of negative comparisons on social media, so it’s important to have my corner of the internet to say that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes.” Lilly was born with an arteriovenous malformation, a rare condition that causes her veins to expand and rupture, triggering severe nose bleeds, migraines and face swelling. She’s had 70 major operations since first showing symptoms at the age of six. At eight, she started uploading videos tackling such issues as disability, mental health, online safety and lifestyle activities. “I always want to be doing something,” she says. “A lot of people think I’m 100 per cent positive all of the time, but some days I do have to just stay in bed. But, when I can, I’ll turn to baking or makeup or singing to take my mind off the reality of having a chronic illness. It’s really important to strike a balance of not pushing yourself too hard, and, if you can, keep moving forward.” Active she most definitely is. In 2016, Lilly won CBBC’s Junior Bake Off and was presented with the Child of Courage award

at Pride of Britain. She’s been the subject of two BAFTA-nominated documentaries in the My Life series; ‘Born to Vlog’ went on to win an Emmy earlier this year, while ‘I Will Survive’ is nominated in the Factual category this evening. She has also fronted her own CBBC Show, Nikki Lilly Meets…, since 2018, in which she’s interviewed everyone from politicians Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn to sports stars Andy Murray and Raheem Sterling. With the aid of her parents, George and Tanya, she’s also found the time to help establish a charity to raise awareness and funds for vital research into her condition, The Butterfly AVM Charity. She embodies the media savvy and activism of her generation.

“If you put your mind to something, believe in yourself and are determined, then you can achieve anything.”
“I want to spread positive messages as widely as possible,” she says. “Although my generation spends a lot of time on social media, there’s much more to us than people think. We truly care about one another and about making the world a better place. I want to do more documentaries. Cyber bullying, social media versus reality and what that does to your mental health, body image and global warming… for younger people who these things will affect most.” And there is a consistent message running through her work: “There will always be someone smarter and prettier but know your worth. You’re unique. If you put your mind to something, believe in yourself and are determined, then you can achieve anything.” Through her BBC series, Lilly has been able to meet people who have inspired her, such as presenter Katie Piper, who paved the way for those who might otherwise feel they look different. About her meeting with Piper, Lilly says: “Both of our appearances changed and we had to come to terms with that. She said something to me that really stuck: ‘The more people see difference the less different it is and the more normal it will become.’” Her true inspiration, however, is much closer to home. “It sounds corny but my parents are my best friends,” she smiles. “They’ve just kept overcoming the obstacles, kept fighting and kept a hopeful mindset. They’re a big reason I am who I am today.” So, how does it feel to receive this BAFTA Special Award, surely one of life’s rainbows? “It’s absolutely insane,” she grins. “There are so many other amazing people out there that deserve it more. But I’m utterly, utterly grateful and I feel very lucky.” ¥

A Year in BAFTA Kids BAFTA Kids is our year-round programme of events and initiatives for children and young people, allowing us to educate and enthuse the UK’s youth about children’s media. Here are some of the highlights from the past 12 months of our activities... SCHOOL’S OUT! For the third consecutive year, BAFTA Kids took over London’s Alexandra Palace for the Big Schools Day in June, inviting more than 800 children into the grand old building for a full day of themed activities. Hosts were presenters Arielle Free, Nigel Clarke and Katie Thistleton, with various special guests on hand to entertain and inform the young crowd on topics such as foley, sound and music, games creation, screen adaptations and more. Pictured are, from left to right, Thistleton, Hetty Feather’s choreographer Christina Andrea and lead actor Isabel Clifton. (Photo credit: Lloyd Winters © 2019)
A KIND OF MAGIC BAFTA workshop host Nigel Clarke was joined by guest speaker Mic Graves, series director of The Amazing World of Gumball, at the Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People, held in Belfast in October. The exciting world of animation and presenting was packed into the day, with a roster of fun activities highlighting the crossover skills of confidence, communication and resilience. (Credit: Cinemagic)
TAKING THE MIC Before the Children’s Awards, BAFTA Kids is working its magic behind the scenes with its Red Carpet Experience. In 2018, presenters Lauren Layfield and Ben Shires hosted a Presenting Masterclass with children from schools in Islington and Ealing, supported by Place2Be. The young guests were given the opportunity to interview Layfield and Shires, as well as special guests Katie Thistleton, song and dance troupe KIDZ BOP Kids and actor Dasharn Anderson (Hetty Feather). THE FUTURE OF GAMING Our ninth annual Young Games Designer (YGD) Awards were held in June, hosted by Aoife Wilson and Alysia Judge. They are pictured here with the winners, namely Jesse Waymont (Game Concept Award 10-14 years); Elizabeth Orji-Smith (Game Concept Award 15-18 years); Maximillian Robinson (Game Making Award 10-14 years); Adam Pace (Game Making Award 15-18 years); and Matthew Applegate, founder of the Creative Computing Club, who was awarded the YGD Mentor Award. The competition proved as popular as ever, with approximately 2,600 young people directly engaged by YGD. (Credit: BAFTA/ Gabi Torres)

REPRESENTING PRESENTING The Young Presenter competition has become a firm fixture on BAFTA Kids’ calendar these past four years. Finalists of the competition, Ellis, Gracie, Khalen, Malik, Maryam and Ruby were invited to a special Presenting Masterclass in October, hosted by Lindsey Russell and featuring a guest appearance from this year’s Special Award recipient, Nikki Lilly. You may have met this year’s winner, Gracie Gosling, on the red carpet, and she will also be presenting an award this evening. As part of the prize, they will also present a feature on the popular Sky News TV show, FYI. (Credit: BAFTA/Thomas Alexander)
IT’S IN THE GAME Past and present YGD winners and finalists were out in force at EGX this year, held at ExCel in October, where we showcased four of the winning games. Pictured are 2010 winner Dan Pearce with finalist Harry Petch, and Elizabeth Orij-Smith, winner of this year’s Game Concept (15-18 Years) award. (Credit: BAFTA/Melissa Phillips)
ON THE ROAD AGAIN The BAFTA Kids Roadshow was out and about throughout the year, visiting numerous schools across the UK supported by children’s charity Place2Be. Popular children’s presenters and special guests from the worlds of film, games and television were on hand to stimulate creativity, as well as promote mental health and emotional wellbeing. Here, Arielle Free and Ben Shires take a quick photo op time out from their visit to Edinburgh’s Forthview Primary School in September. (Credit: BAFTA/Lisa Prime)
LOOK ZOO’S TALKING Throughout the year, BAFTA Kids hosts several Previews of exciting new shows. Pictured here is the preview of Sky Kids’ The Night Zookeeper, with host Lindsey Russell, creators Joshua Davidson and Paul Hutson, head writer Dave Ingham, animation producer Gillian Iversen and voice talents Al, Kahmal, Peter and Twinkle. Other Previews in 2019 included Bryncoed Productions’ The Athena, Tiger Aspect’s Mr Bean: The Animated Series, Disney’s 101 Dalmatian Street, CiTV’s Robozuna, Nickelodeon’s Slimefest and Boomerang’s Scooby Doo and Guess Who?.
