Mae heno, unwaith eto, yn ddathliad haeddiannol o ddoniau arbennig gwneuthurwyr rhaglenni, actorion, awduron, cerddorion, cyfranwyr a phersonél cynhyrchu sydd wedi cyfrannu tuag at ddifyrru cynulleidfaoedd yng Nghymru a thu hwnt.
Mae’n amhosibl cynnal amrywiaeth o ddigwyddiadau a gweithgareddau heb gefnogaeth barhaus noddwyr. Hoffwn ddiolch iddynt oll am eu cymorth amhrisiadwy. Diolch hefyd i BBC Cymru Wales, S4C, Llywodraeth Cymru ac ITV Cymru Wales am eu cefnogaeth barhaus drwy gydol y flwyddyn.
Cyflwynwyd y noson Wobrau gyntaf honno 25 mlynedd yn ôl gan Sian Phillips, y mae ei henw bellach yn gyfystyr ag un o’n prif wobrau blynyddol a enillwyd gan sêr byd-eang fel Ioan Gruffudd, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Rhys a Michael Sheen. Cyflwynodd yr enillydd Oscar, Catherine Zeta Jones, un o’r gwobrau cyntaf oll, ac un o’r enillwyr cyntaf hynny oedd yr animeiddiwr Joanna Quinn a aeth ymlaen i gael ei henwebu ar gyfer Gwobr Academi.
Hoffwn ddiolch i Jane Lush, Cadeirydd BAFTA UK, Amanda Berry, Prif Weithredwr yr Academi, a Kevin Price, y Prif Swyddog Gweithredu, am eu cefnogaeth barhaus yn ystod y flwyddyn.
Mae’r diwydiant ffilm a theledu yng Nghymru wedi tyfu’n sylweddol ers hynny, ac felly hefyd y Gwobrau.Ychwanegwyd Gwobr Ieuenctid arbennig ym 1994 a chyflwynwyd y Wobr Torri Trwodd gyntaf yn 2011. Cyfrannodd ddatblygiadau technolegol hefyd yn sgil cyflwyno’r wobr Cyfrwng Newydd Gorau yn 2001, ac erbyn hyn, mae’r twf a’r doniau aruthrol ym maes Gemau yng Nghymru wedi arwain at seremoni Gwobrau Gemau gwbl ar wahân. Efallai mai’r Gwobrau yw’r uchafbwynt, ond mae’r tîm yn BAFTA Cymru, a arweinir gan Hannah Raybould, wedi trefnu dangosiadau, paneli, cyfweliadau, dosbarthiadau meistr, seminarau a darlithiau drwy gydol y flwyddyn. Hoffwn achub ar y cyfle hwn i ddiolch i Hannah a’i thîm am eu holl waith caled yn ystod blwyddyn arall gyffrous.
Yn olaf, diolch hefyd i’n cyflwynydd, sef Huw Stephens, ac, fel bob amser, mae ein rhestr enwebeion yn cynrychioli’r gorau oll yng Nghymru ym mhob un o’n categorïau arbennig. Yn bersonol, ac ar ran BAFTA Cymru, hoffwn eu llongyfarch i gyd yn wresog a dymuno pob llwyddiant iddynt. Angharad Mair Cadeirydd BAFTA Cymru

BAFTA CYMRU CHAIR S MESSAGE
Welcome to the St Davids Hall as we celebrate a significant milestone tonight, the silver anniversary of the British Academy Cymru Awards - Awards that are now a prominent event in the Welsh media calendar. Tonight once again is a well deserved celebration of the glittering talents of programme makers, actors, writers, musicians, contributors and production personnel that have contributed towards entertaining audiences in Wales and beyond.
I would like to thank Jane Lush, Chair of BAFTA UK, Amanda Berry, Chief Executive of the Academy, and Kevin Price, the Chief Operating Officer, for their continuing support during the year.
That first Awards evening 25 years ago was hosted by Sian Phillips, whose name is now synonymous with one of our main annual awards won by global stars such as Ioan Gruffudd, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Rhys and Michael Sheen. Oscar winner Catherine Zeta Jones presented one of the very first awards, and one of those first winners was Animator Joanna Quinn who then went on to receive an Academy Award nomination.
Finally, thanks also to our host Huw Stephens, and as ever, our list of nominees is the cream of Wales’ crop in each and every one of our distinguished categories. Personally, and on behalf of BAFTA Cymru, I offer heartfelt congratulations to them all and wish them every success.
The film and television industry in Wales since then has grown significantly, and so have the Awards. A special Youth Award was added in 1994 and the Breakthrough Award was first presented in 2011. Developing technology played its part too with Best New Media introduced in 2001, and by now, the immense growth and talents in Gaming in Wales has led to a totally separate Games Awards ceremony.
Angharad Mair Chair BAFTA Cymru
The Awards ceremony may be the pinnacle but throughout the year the team at BAFTA Cymru, led by Hannah Raybould, have organised screenings, panels, interviews, masterclasses, seminars and lectures. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hannah and her team for all their hard work during another exciting year. Maintaining a range of events and activities is impossible without the continued support of sponsors. I would like to thank them all for their invaluable support. Thanks also to BBC Cymru Wales, S4C,Welsh Government and ITV Wales for their continuing support throughout the year.

NEGES GAN CADE IRYDD YR ACADEMI
Mae’n bleser mawr gennyf eich croesawu i 25ain Gwobrau’r Academi Brydeinig yng Nghymru. Seremoni heno yw’r 25ain mlynedd i BAFTA Cymru gydnabod a gwobrwyo rhagoriaeth yn y sectorau cynhyrchu ffilm a theledu yng Nghymru. Mae BAFTA Cymru wedi cael blwyddyn wych arall o ddigwyddiadau a gweithgareddau, gyda phwyslais penodol ar ddathlu’r pen-blwydd chwarter canrif. Rydym wedi achub ar y cyfle i bori trwy’r archifau i atgoffa’r cyhoedd o enillwyr blaenorol, dathlu rhai o’r ffilmiau a’r rhaglenni teledu a wobrwywyd trwy’r bartneriaeth newydd yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, sef Sinemaes, a chynnal digwyddiadau yn Llundain ym mis Ionawr a mis Mehefin i dynnu sylw cynulleidfa ehangach at waith y gangen. Dwysaodd ein gwaith yng ngogledd Cymru eleni, gyda digwyddiadau misol rheolaidd ym Mangor a Chaernarfon a phartneriaethau newydd gwerthfawr â Phrifysgol Glyndw ˆ r Wrecsam a Phrifysgol Aberystwyth. Trwy’r rhain, gwnaethom gynnal dangosiadau rhagolwg a digwyddiadau Gyrfa Glyfar i fyfyrwyr a’r cyhoedd ehangach. Mae ein tîm yn swyddfa BAFTA Cymru yn parhau i weithio’n ddiwyd i gyrraedd partneriaid newydd a chynyddu aelodaeth y gangen, ac rydym ni wedi gweld cynnydd gwych mewn aelodau Llawn a Changen yn ystod y 12 mis diwethaf.
Diolch yn fawr i staff BAFTA yma yng Nghymru: y Cyfarwyddwr, Hannah Raybould, a’i thîm ymroddedig, sef Rebecca Hardy, Llio Wyn, Emma Price, Maxine Dedominicis, Laura Perrin a Robert Lewis, sydd oll wedi gweithio gyda chymaint o ymroddiad ar ran yr Academi drwy gydol y flwyddyn. Diolch hefyd i’r Pwyllgor, a arweinir yn alluog gan Gadeirydd newydd, sef Angharad Mair; i Huw Stephens, sy’n cyflwyno’r seremoni eto; ac i BBC Cymru Wales, S4C, Llywodraeth Cymru ac ITV Cymru Wales am gefnogi ein cenhadaeth yn barhaus. Yn olaf, llongyfarchiadau i’r holl enwebeion, y mae eu gwaith gwych yn dystiolaeth o’r rhagoriaeth barhaus yn y diwydiannau delweddau symudol yng Nghymru. Mae’n flin gennyf na allaf fod gyda chi heno gan ei bod yn Flwyddyn Newydd Iddewig, ond gobeithiaf y cewch chi i gyd noson bleserus a llwyddiannus iawn. Dyma obeithio am 25 mlynedd arall lwyddiannus. Jane Lush Cadeirydd yr Academi
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE ACADEMY
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 25th British Academy Cymru Awards. Tonight’s ceremony marks the 25th year that BAFTA Cymru has acknowledged and rewarded excellence in the Welsh film and television production sectors. Congratulations in particular to our Special Award winners: the Welsh Python, Terry Jones, and acclaimed make-up artist Sian Grigg. BAFTA Cymru has had another great year of events and activity with a particular focus on celebrating the quarter-century anniversary. We have taken the opportunity to look back through the archives to remind the public of our past winners, to celebrate some of the films and television programmes that were awarded through the new partnership at the National Eisteddfod, Sinemaes, and to hold events in January and June in London to promote the work of the branch to a broader audience. Our work in North Wales went up a gear this year, with regular monthly events in Bangor and Caernarfon and valuable new partnerships with Wrexham Glyndw ˆr University and Aberystwyth University. These saw us host preview screenings and Career Clever events for students and the wider public. Our team in the BAFTA Cymru office continues to work diligently to reach out to new partners and increase membership of the branch, and we have seen a fantastic growth in both Full and Branch members over the past 12 months.
A big thank you to the BAFTA staff here in Wales: Director Hannah Raybould and her dedicated team of Rebecca Hardy, Llio Wyn, Emma Price, Maxine Dedominicis, Laura Perrin and Robert Lewis, who have all worked with such commitment on behalf of the Academy throughout the year. Thanks also to the Committee, ably led by new Chair, Angharad Mair; to our returning ceremony host, Huw Stephens; and to BBC Cymru Wales, S4C, Welsh Government and ITV Wales for their continued support of our mission. Finally, congratulations to all the nominees, whose fine work is testimony to the ongoing excellence in the moving image industries of Wales. I’m sorry I can’t be with you tonight as it’s Jewish New Year but I wish you all the best for a very enjoyable and successful evening. Here’s to another 25 years. Jane Lush Chair of the Academy

NODDWR ALLWEDDOL Y DIGWYDDIAD / KEY EVENT SPONSOR: GORILLA Mae Cymru’n genedl sy’n fwrlwm o dalent a phrofiad creadigol sy’n haeddu cael ei arddangos ar lefel uchaf llwyfan rhyngwladol.
Wales is a nation brimming with creative talent and expertise which deserves to be showcased at the highest level on a global stage.
Fel cenedl rydym yn adnabyddus am ein croeso cynnes, rhywbeth sydd wedi rhoi mantais i ni wrth ddenu nifer o gynyrchiadau allanol gwerthfawr o’r raddfa uchaf yma.
As a nation we are known for our warm welcome, something which had stood us in good stead in terms of inwardly attracting a number of large-scale, high-value external productions.
Mae'r rhain yn hollbwysig ac yn codi proffil Cymru yn y farchnad gynhyrchu ryngwladol. Ond mae nawr yn bwysicach nag erioed ein bod yn parhau i gefnogi’r cynyrchiadau brodorol sydd wrth galon y diwydiant yma yng Nghymru.
These are integral, raising Wales’ profile in the international production marketplace, but it is now more important than ever that we continue supporting the indigenous productions at the heart of our industry.
Felly hefyd dylem barhau i feithrin a dal ein gafael ar ein talentau creadigol o Gymru. Mae cyd-weithio a chyd-gynhyrchu yn allweddol er mwyn cyflawni hyn - dim ond drwy weithio gyda’n gilydd fel diwydiant y gallwn ddarparu’r cyfleoedd hyfforddiant a datblygu parhaol a’r cyfleoedd swyddi cynaliadwy sydd eu hangen er mwyn sicrhau ein bod yn cadw’n talent yma yng Nghymru.
Similarly, we must continue to nurture and retain our home-grown creative talent. Collaboration and co-production are the key to achieving this - only by working together as an industry can we deliver the ongoing training and development opportunities and sustainable job prospects required to ensure we are able to retain our talent in Wales.
Rydym yn wynebu amseroedd ansicr ond mae gennym ffrwd gyfoethog o dalent a phrofiad yn niwydiannau creadigol Cymru. Nawr yw’r amser i fanteisio ar hyn drwy weithio gyda’n gilydd gallwn fod yn gryfach, yn fwy cadarn ac mewn sefyllfa i gynnig rhywbeth hollol unigryw i’r diwydiant rhyngwladol. Hoffwn i Gymru gael ei hadnabod fel cenedl sydd nid yn unig yn croesawu ond hefyd yn darparu digonedd o dalent, creadigrwydd a chynyrchiadau o’r safon uchaf.
We face uncertain times but we have a rich seam of talent and experience within the Welsh creative industries. Now is the time to capitalise on this and, by working together, we can be stronger, more resilient and able to offer something unique to the global industry. We want Wales to be known as a nation that not only welcomes but also delivers talent, creativity and top quality productions in abundance.
Unwaith eto mae Gorilla yn falch iawn o fod yn noddi Gwobrau yr Academi Brydeinig yng Nghymru a hoffwn ddymuno noson arbennig iawn i’r holl enwebwyr, enillwyr, aelodau a chefnogwyr y diwydiant. Richard Moss Rheolwr Gyfarwyddwr, Gorilla

ˆ TLWS SIAN PHILL IPS / ˆ SIAN PHILLIPS AWARD 2O16: ˆ SIAN GRIGG
Aeth Siân Grigg i Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf yng Nghaerdydd cyn cofrestru yng Ngholeg Celf Caerdydd, ac yna yng Ngholeg Ffasiwn Llundain gan astudio colur a gwallt ar gyfer ffilm a’r teledu. Roedd eisoes wedi cael ei chyflwyno i fyd colur ffilm a theledu gan fod ei mam yn Bennaeth yr Adran Golur yn y BBC yng Nghaerdydd ac yn ddylanwad mawr ar ei phenderfyniad i ddilyn gyrfa fel colurwraig a dylunydd. Bwriad Siân oedd ymuno ag Adran Golur y BBC yn Llundain, ond caeodd yr ysgol y flwyddyn cyn iddi raddio o’r Coleg, a chredodd fod hynny’n drychineb enfawr ar y pryd. Fodd bynnag, wrth edrych yn ôl, roedd yn gyfle gwych oherwydd cafodd ei swydd ddi-dâl gyntaf, yn syth o’r coleg, fel colurwraig dan hyfforddiant ar Howard’s End gydag Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson a Helena Bonham Carter. Howard’s End oedd y cam cyntaf yn yr hyn sydd wedi bod yn yrfa hynod ffodus. Mae hi wedi bod yn lwcus iawn i weithio gyda rhai dylunwyr colur rhyfeddol, sydd oll wedi helpu i’w haddysgu a mireinio ei chrefft, ar ffilmiau fel Orlando, Saving Private Ryan a Titanic. Yn y blynyddoedd diweddar, mae Siân wedi gweithio fel colurwraig bersonol i Tobey Maguire, Kate Hudson a Leonardo Di Caprio, ac wedi dylunio colur ar gyfer ffilmiau fel Ex Machina, Suffragette a Far From The Madding Crowd. Yn ystod ei gyrfa, mae Siân wedi ennill BAFTA am ei gwaith ar The Aviator, wedi cael ei henwebu am ddwy Wobr Guild am ei gwaith ar Ex Machina, ac wedi cael ei henwebu am Oscar a BAFTA ar gyfer The Revenant.
Siân Grigg attended Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf comprehensive school in Cardiff before enrolling at Cardiff Art College, followed by The London College of Fashion studying make up and hair for film and television. She had already been introduced to the world of film and television make up as her mother was Head of the Make Up Department at the BBC in Cardiff and a huge influence on her decision to pursue a career as a make up artist and designer. Siân’s plan had been to join the BBC Make Up Department in London, unfortunately the school shut the year before she graduated from College, at the time she thought this was a disaster of massive proportions. However, with hindsight this turned out to be an amazing opportunity as her first unpaid job, straight out of college, was as trainee make up artist on Howard’s End staring Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham Carter. Howard’s End became the first step in what has proven to be a very fortunate career. She has been incredibly lucky working with some amazing make up designers, all of whom have helped teach and enhance her craft, on films such as Orlando, Saving Private Ryan and Titanic. In recent years Siân has worked as personal make up artist for the likes of Tobey Maguire, Kate Hudson and Leonardo Di Caprio and has also designed make up for films such as Ex Machina, Suffragette and Far From The Madding Crowd. During her career Siân has won a BAFTA for her work on The Aviator, was nominated for two Guilds Awards for work on Ex Machina, as well as receiving nominations for an Oscar and BAFTA for The Revenant.

GWOBR GWYN ALF WILLIAMS / THE GWYN ALF WILLIAMS AWARD I’r llu o bobl a’i clywodd yn siarad neu a welodd ei raglenni teledu, roedd Gwyn Alf Williams yn ysbrydoliaeth. “Grenâd llaw o ddyn” ydoedd yn ôl Hywel Teifi Edwards, ac roedd ei raglenni ffrwydrol wedi helpu i danseilio’r ymagwedd ofalus a chydymffurfiol at hanes ar y teledu a oedd yn gyffredin cyn iddo ef ymddangos yn y cyfrwng. “Mae unrhyw fudiad sy’n anwybodus ynglyˆn â’i hanes ei hun yn gaeth i hanes pobl eraill” ysgrifennodd. “Nid oes unrhyw fodd i ni ennill y dyfodol oni bai ein bod ni’n dal gafael yn ein gorffennol ein hunain.”Yr ymdeimlad clir hwnnw o ddiben yw’r hyn y mae Gwobr Gwyn Alf Williams BAFTA Cymru wedi’i bwriadu i’w gadw’n fyw.
42
To many who heard him speak or saw his television programmes, Gwyn Alf Williams was an inspiration. “A hand grenade of a man” was how Hywel Teifi Edwards described him and his explosive programmes helped to undermine the all-too-often cautious and conformist approach to history on television that preceded his appearance in the medium. “Any movement which is ignorant of its own history is a prisoner of other people’s history” he wrote. “We can’t possibly win the future unless we keep our hands on our own past.” It is that clear sense of purpose that BAFTA Cymru’s Gwyn Alf Williams award is intended to keep alive.
Roedd ‘Cofiadwr y Bobl’ yn gallu cyfuno deallusrwydd dwfn, defnydd cymhellol o iaith, y gallu i gyfleu cyffro hanes a chraffter ynglyˆn â’r rhyngweithio rhwng hanes a myth. Heb sôn am ffraethineb – mae gennyf gof byw ohono’n camu i bulpud capel gwag a rhoi pregeth gellweirus a berodd i’r criw ffilmio chwerthin hyd at ddagrau.
‘The People’s Remembrancer’ was able to combine an intellectual sweep, a vigorous use of language, an ability to convey the excitement of history and a perceptiveness about the interaction of history and myth. And wit too – I have a vivid memory of him stepping into the pulpit of an abandoned chapel and making a spoof sermon that had the film crew weeping with laughter.
Talcen caled yw gofyn i wneuthurwyr ffilmiau gyflawni’r cyfuniad hwnnw o nodweddion erbyn hyn, ond mae parhad y wobr yn helpu i gynnal y dyhead hwnnw – i’n hatgoffa bod y gorffennol yn gallu bod yn ysbrydoliaeth i ni yn y presennol.
It is a tall order to ask film makers to achieve that combination of qualities now but the continuance of the award helps to maintain that aspiration – to remind us that the past can be an inspiration to us in the present.
