Croeso cynnes iawn i chi i Ganolfan Mileniwm Cymru, cartref Gwobrau Cymru’r Academi Brydeinig heno am y chweched flwyddyn yn olynol.
A very warm welcome to the Wales Millennium Centre, home for the sixth consecutive year of tonight’s British Academy Cymru Awards.
Y Gwobrau hyn yw safon aur ein diwydiant a, heno, byddwn yn canu clodydd y bobl hynny sydd wedi diddanu, addysgu a thanio brwdfrydedd cynulleidfaoedd ledled Cymru a thu hwnt trwy roi llwyfan i’r goreuon o blith ein doniau creadigol ym myd ffilm a theledu. Mae ateb heriau newidiadau diwylliannol, cymdeithasol a thechnolegol yn golygu bod ein diwydiannau creadigol yn esblygu’n gyson ond er gwaetha pwysau a chyflymder y newid, nid oes pall ar ein doniau creadigol eithriadol ac maent wrth galon ein busnes. Heno, caiff hyn oll ei adlewyrchu yn yr amrywiaeth arbennig o enwebiadau ac yn y cyfoeth o berfformiadau unigol a gallu technegol. Yn ogystal â dathlu rhagoriaeth, un o brif amcanion yr Academi yng Nghymru yw codi lefel y gwerthfawrogiad a’r ddealltwriaeth o gelfyddyd y ddelwedd symudol, a thrwy gefnogaeth ein haelodau, noddwyr a chefnogwyr, gwnawn hyn drwy ystod lawn o ddigwyddiadau gan gynnwys dosbarthiadau meistr, darlithoedd, paneli’r diwydiant a chyfleoedd rhagwylio. Felly, diolchaf i’n darlledwyr – BBC Cymru Wales, S4C ac ITV Cymru Wales
am eu cefnogaeth barhaus, ac i’n noddwyr a’r sefydliadau niferus sy’n chwarae rhan mor hanfodol i’n helpu ni i gyflwyno’n gweithgareddau drwy gydol y flwyddyn. Dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf, mae NEP Cymru wedi bod yn gefnogwr pybyr a ffyddlon i Wobrau BAFTA Cymru a hoffwn ddiolch yn arbennig i Tony “TC” Cahalane, Rheolwr Gyfarwyddwr NEP Cymru, a’i dîm am eu sgiliau technegol amhrisiadwy, ac i Richard Moss, Rheolwr Gyfarwyddwr Gorilla, am ddarparu’r holl gyfleusterau cynhyrchu unwaith eto ar gyfer ein Gwobrau heno. Hoffwn ddiolch yn arbennig i John Willis, Cadeirydd BAFTA, Amanda Berry, Prif Weithredwr yr Academi a Kevin Price, y Prif Swyddog Gweithredol a’u timau am eu cefnogaeth ddi-ffael. Hoffwn ddiolch hefyd i Allison Dowzell, Cyfarwyddwr BAFTA Cymru, ynghyd â’i thîm, aelodau Pwyllgor BAFTA Cymru a rheithgorau BAFTA. Yn olaf, diolch i bob un ohonoch sydd wedi gweithio mor ddiflino i gyflwyno Gwobrau BAFTA Cymru 2013 ac, yn benodol, i Jonathan Davies, Cynhyrchydd y Gwobrau, a’n cyflwynwyr heno, Sian Lloyd a Matt Johnson. Llongyfarchiadau i bob un ohonoch sydd wedi cael eich enwebu heno! Dewi Vaughan Owen Cadeirydd BAFTA Cymru
These Awards represent the gold standard of our industry and tonight we will shine a spotlight on those who have entertained, informed and enthused audiences throughout Wales and beyond by showcasing the very best of our creative talents in film and television. Meeting the challenges of cultural, social and technological change means that our creative industries are in a constant state of evolution but regardless of the pressures and pace of change our exceptional creative talent remains undiminished and lies at the very heart of our business. Tonight we will see this reflected in the fantastic range of nominations and a wealth of individual performances and technical ability. In addition to celebrating excellence one of the principal objectives of the Academy in Wales is to raise the level of appreciation and understanding of the art forms of the moving image and, with the support of our members, sponsors and supporters, we do this through a full range of events including masterclasses, lectures, industry panels and preview screenings. I therefore thank our broadcasters, BBC Cymru Wales, S4C
and ITV Wales for their continuing support together with our sponsors and the many organisations that play such a vital role in helping us deliver our activities throughout the year. Over recent years NEP Cymru have been a steadfast and loyal supporter of our BAFTA Cymru Awards and my particular thanks goes to Tony “TC” Cahalane, MD of NEP Cymru and his team for their invaluable technical skill and to Richard Moss, MD of Gorilla, for again providing a full range of production facilities for our Awards this evening. My particular thanks to John Willis, Chairman of BAFTA, to Amanda Berry, Chief Executive of the Academy and to Kevin Price, Chief Operating Officer and their teams for their unstinting support. My thanks also to Allison Dowzell, Director of BAFTA Cymru, together with her team, members of the BAFTA Cymru Committee and our BAFTA juries. Finally, a thank you to all who have worked so tirelessly to deliver our BAFTA Cymru Awards 2013 and in particular Jonathan Davies, our Awards Producer, and our hosts this evening Sian Lloyd and Matt Johnson. Congratulations to every individual nominated this evening! Dewi Vaughan Owen Chairman BAFTA Wales

NEGES CADEIRYDD BAFTA (DU) BAFTA (UK) CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
NEGES CADEIRYDD BAFTA (DU) BAFTA (UK) CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
Pleser o’r mwyaf yw cael dweud ychydig eiriau i’ch croesawu i Wobrau Academi Brydeinig Cymru sy’n ddwy ar hugain eleni.
It gives me great pleasure to say a few words to welcome you to the 22nd British Academy Cymru Awards.
Mae digwyddiad heno’n dynodi pen-blwydd BAFTA yng Nghymru, a thros yr ddwy flynedd ar hugain ddiwethaf, rydym wedi cydnabod a gwobrwyo rhagoriaeth yn sectorau ffilm, teledu a chynnyrch y cyfryngau newydd yng Nghymru. A minnau’n gweithio i Tinopolis, sef cwmni o Gymru sydd bellach yn ymestyn o Lanelli i Los Angeles, rwy’n gwbl ymwybodol o’r creadigrwydd a’r uchelgais sydd i’w canfod yma. Sefydlwyd BAFTA yng Nghymru ym 1987 a chynhaliwyd ei seremoni wobrwyo gyntaf ym 1991. Ers hynny, mae’r Gwobrau wedi tyfu i fod yn ddigwyddiad blynyddol o bwys i ddiwydiant cyfryngau’r wlad. Ar wahân i’r Gwobrau, mae BAFTA yng Nghymru hefyd yn cynnal rhaglen egnïol ac amrywiol o ddigwyddiadau drwy gydol y flwyddyn ac yn cydweithio’n agos â darlledwyr teledu a’r diwydiant ffilm i hyrwyddo materion o bwys yn ein diwydiannau gyda llais annibynnol. Mae BAFTA yn deulu o ganghennau cenedlaethol a rhanbarthol sy’n cynnwys Cymru, yr Alban, Efrog Newydd a Los Angeles. Rydym yn gweithio’n ddiflino i gyflawni ein haddewid elusennol,
sef ysbrydoli’r cyhoedd. Ddiwedd 2011, lansiwyd gwefan newydd gennym, sef BAFTA Guru (www.bafta.org/guru), ar gyfer pobl ar ddechrau eu gyrfaoedd. Mae’r wefan yn cynnig cryn ysbrydoliaeth ac arni gellir gwylio llawer o’n digwyddiadau gyda hoelion wyth y diwydiant a chael eu hysbrydoli ganddynt. Gobeithiwn hefyd feithrin cysylltiadau cynyddol gryfach a byd eang gyda’n tri sector diwydiant - sef ffilm, teledu a gemau. Un o fy mhrif amcanion fel Cadeirydd yw cryfhau’r cysylltiadau gyda phrif ddarlledwyr y DU, felly hoffwn ddiolch hefyd i BBC Cymru, S4C ac ITV Wales am eu cefnogaeth barhaus. Hoffwn dalu teyrnged i’n staff yma yng Nghymru, yn enwedig Allison Dowzell, Fiona Lynch, Claire Heat, Ceri Nia Lewis ac Emily Angell sydd wedi gweithio gydag ymroddiad ar ran yr Academi drwy gydol y flwyddyn, yn ogystal ag i’r Pwyllgor o dan arweiniad deheuig Dewi Vaughan Owen. Diolch hefyd i’n cyflwynwyr heno, Sian Lloyd a Matt Johnson. Yn olaf, llongyfarchiadau i bawb sydd wedi’u henwebu. Mae eu gwaith ardderchog yn brawf o’r rhagoriaeth barhaus yn niwydiannau’r ddelwedd symudol yng Nghymru. John Willis Cadeirydd BAFTA
Tonight’s event marks the 22nd year of BAFTA Wales’ work acknowledging and rewarding excellence in the Welsh film, television and new media production sectors. Working for Tinopolis, a Welsh company that now stretches from Llanelli to Los Angeles, I am fully aware of the creativity and ambition to be found here. BAFTA Wales was established in 1987, with its first dedicated Awards ceremony taking place in 1991 that has since grown to become a major annual event for the country’s media industry. Beyond the Awards, BAFTA Wales also hosts a dynamic and varied programme of events all year round, working closely with television broadcasters and the film industry to champion key issues in our industries with an independent voice. BAFTA is a family of national and regional branches including Wales, Scotland, New York and Los Angeles, working tirelessly to deliver on its charitable promise to inspire the public. In late 2011, we launched our new website aimed at career starters, BAFTA Guru (www.bafta.org/guru), a huge source of inspiration where
our many events with established industry practitioners are available to watch and be inspired by. We also hope to develop ever stronger, global relations with our three sector industries of film, television and games. One of the main objectives of my Chairmanship is to strengthen our relationships with the major UK broadcasters, and I would therefore like to extend my gratitude to BBC Cymru Wales, S4C and ITV Wales for their continued support. I would like to pay tribute to our staff here in Wales, in particular Allison Dowzell, Claire Heat, Fiona Lynch, Ceri Nia Lewis and Emily Angell, who have all worked with such dedication on behalf of the Academy throughout the year, and also to the Committee, led ably by Dewi Vaughan Owen. I’d also like to thank our hosts for the evening, Sian Lloyd and Matt Johnson. Finally, congratulations to all the nominees, whose fine work is testimony to the on-going excellence in the moving image industries of Wales. I hope you all enjoy your evening.

NODDWR SWYDDOGOL Y DIGWYDDIAD: OFFICIAL EVENT SPONSOR: NEP CYMRU
NODDWR ALLWEDDOL Y DIGWYDDIAD: KEY EVENT SPONSOR: GORILLA
Mae ansawdd ceisiadau eleni ar gyfer gwobrau Academi Brydeinig Cymru yn dyst i lwyddiannau diweddar ein diwydiant teledu a ffilm.
The quality of this year’s entries for the British Academy Cymru awards is testament to the recent successes of our television and film industry.
Bob blwyddyn, mae Gwobrau Academi Brydeinig Cymru yn cynnig cyfle i ni ddod at ein gilydd i ddathlu a myfyrio ar gyfoeth ein talent darlledu.
Every year the British Academy Cymru Awards offers us a chance to get together to celebrate and reflect on the wealth of our broadcast talent.
Rydym yn falch o weld ein cynyrchiadau cartref ar sgriniau ledled y Deyrnas Unedig , yn ogystal ag yng Nghymru. Mae pob rhan o’r diwydiant yn haeddu cymaint o gydnabyddiaeth â phosibl ar gyfer eu creadigrwydd a sgiliau. Mae’n codi proffil talent Cymru ond hefyd yn cynnig diben ymarferol iawn drwy gefnogi cwmnïau Cymreig yn ariannol, eu cynnal a’u helpu i dyfu drwy ddod ag incwm ychwanegol i’r diwydiant. Mae hyn yn creu mwy o waith a swyddi, gan gynnal rhaglenni cartref o ansawdd.
We are proud to see our homegrown productions on UK screens as well as in Wales. All parts of our industry deserve as wide a recognition for their creativity and skills as possible. It raises the profile of Welsh talent but also serves a very practical purpose - financially supporting many Welsh companies, sustaining and helping them grow and bringing additional income to our industry. This generates more work and jobs - supporting the quality domestic programming.
Wrth i ni addasu i dirwedd newidiol y cyfryngau, mae’n hanfodol bod yr amryw rannau, sy’n aml ar wasgar, yn gallu gweithio ochr wyn ochr â’i gilydd. Mae clystyru creadigrwydd yn dod â phobl, cwmnïau a sefydliadau o’r un anian at ei gilydd gan wella cynhyrchiant. Ond mae angen gofodau addas, fforddiadwy a chreadigol i ni allu gwneud hynny.
As we adapt to a changing media lansdcape, it’s imperative that the often fragmented parts of this industry can work alongside each other. Clustered creativity brings like-minded people, companies and organisations together, improving productivity. But we need suitable, affordable and creative spaces for us to do so.
Yn bendant, mae rhai heriau yn ein hwynebu, gan gynnwys adleoli ar raddfa fawr i rai cwmnïau, ond mae’r dyfodol yn ymddangos yn fwy gobeithiol.Yr allwedd i sicrhau diwydiant llwyddiannus yng Nghymru yw mwy o ymddiriedaeth a pharodrwydd i gydweithio gyda phartneriaethau rhwng darlledwyr a chyflenwyr, cwmnïau cyfryngau, ac yn hollbwysig, gyda llywodraeth ar bob lefel.
We are certainly facing challenges including a forced large scale relocation for some media companies, however the future seems rosier. The key to stable and successful Welsh industry is increasing trust and a willingness to work together with partnerships between broadcasters and suppliers, media companies and, crucially, with government at all levels.
Mae gennym y dalent, y sgiliau a’r uchelgais i dyfu ein diwydiant yn bwerdy cyfryngau i’w chwennych. Rydym yn gobeithio y bydd y gefnogaeth gan Lywodraeth Cymru ac eraill yn parhau wrth i ni adeiladu ar y llwyddiant a welir yma heno gan unigolion a chwmnïau sy’n hyrwyddo ac yn arwain ein diwydiant.
We have the talent, the skill and the ambition to grow our industry into an enviable media powerhouse. We hope the support by the Welsh Government and others continues as we build on the success showcased here tonight by individuals and companies that promote and lead our industry.
Hoffai Gorilla Group longyfarch yn fawr holl enwebeion ac enillwyr heno.
The Gorilla Group warmly congratulates all of tonight’s nominees and winners.

CYFLWYNIR Y SEREMONI GAN: THE CEREMONY WILL BE HOSTED BY: MATT JOHNSON Mae Matt Johnson yn gyflwynydd ar raglen This Morning ar ITV1 ac mae’n cyflwyno The Hub bob dydd Gwener ynghyd ag eitemau amrywiol eraill, gan gynnwys digwyddiadau ar y carped coch, ar gyfer y sioe deledu hynod boblogaidd hon. Hefyd, mae’n cyflwyno The National Lottery ar BBC1 yn rheolaidd.
30
Daeth i sylw’n wreiddiol pan oedd yn cyflwyno cyfres gerddoriaeth ac adloniant ranbarthol The Wales Show ar gyfer ITV1 Wales. Mae Matt wedi cyflwyno sioe newyddion adloniant ddyddiol OK!TV ar Five, ac mae’n gydgyflwynydd y cyfresi llwyddiannus Hwb a Cariad@iaith-love4language ar S4C. Mae Matt hefyd yn dwli ar chwaraeon – unrhyw chwaraeon. Fel rhywun a fyddai wrth ei fodd yn fabolgampwr, enillodd Matt ei gap cyntaf yn chwarae Pêl-droed Awstralaidd dros Gymru yn erbyn Lloegr pan oedd yn ohebydd ar raglen BBC Cymru, Sport Wales. Mae’n focsiwr amatur brwd, wrth ei fodd gyda phêl-droed Americanaidd ac Awstralaidd, ac wedi cymryd rhan ym Marathon Llundain Virgin. Wrth reswm, fel Cymro, mae’n gefnogwr rygbi brwd hefyd. Cafodd Matt ei enwi’n ‘Ddyn Mwyaf Rhywiol Cymru’ mewn pleidlais gan bapurau newydd y Western Mail a’r Wales on Sunday ac, yn ddiweddar, fe wnaeth fwynhau cymryd rhan yn rhaglenni ITV1,Your Face Sounds Familiar a Celebrity Take Me Out.
Matt Johnson is a presenter on ITV1’s This Morning, presenting The Hub every Friday as well as various other items including red carpet events for the hugely popular daytime show. He also regularly presents The National Lottery on BBC1. Originally spotted while presenting the regional music and entertainment series The Wales Show for ITV1 Wales, Matt has also presented Five’s daily entertainment news show OK!TV and co-hosts S4C’s successful series Hwb and Cariad@iaith-love4language.
31
Matt is also mad about sport – any sport. As a ‘wannabe’ sportsman, Matt won his first international cap, playing Australian Rules Football for Wales against England while reporting for BBC Wales’ Sport Wales programme. He is a keen amateur boxer, loves American and Australian football and has taken part in the Virgin London Marathon. Matt was voted ‘The Sexiest Man in Wales’ by the Western Mail and the Wales on Sunday newspapers and recently enjoyed taking part in ITV1’s Your Face Sounds Familiar and Celebrity Take Me Out.
MATT JOHNSON
CYFLWYNIR Y SEREMONI GAN: THE CEREMONY WILL BE HOSTED BY: SIAN LLOYD Magwyd Sian Lloyd yn Wrecsam ac mae’n newyddiadurwr a darlledwr profiadol ac yn wyneb cyfarwydd ar ein sgriniau teledu, yng Nghymru a thu hwnt. Cyn dod yn newyddiadurwr, hyfforddodd Sian yn gyfreithiwr, gan weithio yn Llundain ac yn Hong Kong, ond gadawodd y gyfraith i ddilyn ei breuddwyd o fod yn newyddiadurwr. Cychwynnodd Sian ei gyrfa ar y teledu a’r radio yng Nghymru fel gohebydd a chyflwynydd ar BBC Wales Today a newyddion Radio Wales. Ar hyn o bryd, mae Sian yn ohebydd ar gyfer newyddion y BBC, ond mae i’w gweld hefyd ar y soffa goch yn cyflwyno BBC Breakfast (ar BBC One), gan fynd i’r afael â phopeth o gyfweliad gwleidyddol mawr i flasu pryd bwyd a wnaed o bryfed!
32
Yn gynharach eleni, bu’n gydgyflwynydd Crimewatch Roadshow (BBC One) a threuliodd y mis yn darlledu’n fyw o naw heddlu, gan amlygu achosion a oedd yn amrywio o ladrata treisgar i anifeiliaid anwes coll. Roedd ei rôl yn amrywiol iawn, gan gynnwys cael ei thorri allan o gar gan swyddogion tân a helpu i feirniadu sêr “pup idols” Heddlu Gorllewin Canolbarth Lloegr!
SIAN LLOYD
Yn ogystal, mae Sian wedi cyflwyno nifer o raglenni yn y Gymraeg, gan gynnwys yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yn 2011 a Hwb gyda Matt Johnson, sef ei chydgyflwynydd ar gyfer Gwobrau Cymru’r Academi Brydeinig.
Sian Lloyd grew up in Wrexham and is an experienced journalist, broadcaster and familiar face on our television screens both in Wales and further afield. Before becoming a journalist, Sian trained as a solicitor working in London and Hong Kong but left the law to follow her dream of becoming a journalist. Sian began her TV and Radio career in Wales as a reporter and presenter on BBC Wales Today and Radio Wales news. Currently, Sian is a correspondent for BBC news, but she can also be spotted on the red sofa presenting BBC Breakfast (BBC One) tackling everything from the big political interview to sampling a meal made from insects! Earlier this year, she co-presented Crimewatch Roadshow (BBC One) and spent the month broadcasting live from nine police forces highlighting cases from brutal robberies to missing pets. Her role was extremely varied, and included being cut free from a car by fire officers and helping to judge the stars of West Midlands Police pup idols! Sian has also presented a number of programmes in Welsh including the coverage of the 2011 National Eisteddfod and HWB with her British Academy Cymru Awards co-presenter, Matt Johnson.

Wel, nid yw’n gyfrinach mwyach Peter Capaldi fydd y 12fed Doctor, a bydd yn camu i esgidiau nodedig Matt Smith yn ystod rhaglen arbennig y Nadolig eleni.
MLYNEDD O DOCTOR WHO TRWY RHODRI TALFAN DAVIES
52
Roedd yn gyffrous gweld y croeso a gafodd Peter: mae’r ffaith bod Doctor Who yn dal i allu creu’r fath gynnwrf hanner canrif yn ddiweddarach yn rhyfeddol. Wrth gwrs, bydd y gyfres yn dathlu hanner canmlwyddiant mewn steil ar y 23ain o Dachwedd. Mae’r pen-blwydd arbennig sydd ar y gorwel hefyd yn gyfle i ni ystyried effaith y gyfres fytholwyrdd hon yma yng Nghymru. Roedd ail-eni Doctor Who yng Nghymru, bron i ddeng mlynedd yn ôl, yn drobwynt. Rwy’n credu bod uchelgais a safon y gyfres wedi newid pethau’n llwyr – ac wedi creu gwir ymdeimlad o bosibilrwydd ynglyn â Chymru a’n dylanwad creadigol. Bron i ddegawd ar ôl ymddangosiad cyntaf Christopher Ecclestone – o dan arweiniad Russell T Davies a Julie Gardner – oes ‘na unrhyw un yn cwestiynu gallu cynhyrchu Cymru mewn gwirionedd? Mae llwyddiannau’r dramâu rhwydwaith yng Nghymru ers 2005 yn aruthrol, gan gynnwys Doctor Who, Casualty, The Indian Doctor (Rondo), Wizards vs Aliens, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Being Human (Touchpaper), Sherlock (Hartswood), Merlin (Shine), Torchwood, Da Vinci’s Demons (Starz/BBC Worldwide) ac Upstairs Downstairs. Mae llawer mwy i ddod hefyd. Mae cyfres newydd gan BBC ONE, Atlantis (Little Monster), yn cael ei ffilmio yng
Nghas-gwent ar hyn o bryd, ac mae S4C a’r BBC yn cefnogi cynhyrchiad drama fawr newydd gan Fiction Factory, Hinterland a Y Gwyll. Mae Modern TV yng Nghaerdydd yn gweithio gyda’r awdur, Andrew Davies, ar ddrama arbennig, A Poet in New York, ar gyfer BBC TWO a BBC Cymru, i nodi canmlwyddiant Dylan Thomas yn 2014. Ac mae ein tîm mewnol wrthi’n cynllunio dwy gyfres ddrama fawr newydd ar gyfer BBC ONE: cyfres am y byd ysbïo, The Game, ac addasiad epig o nofel Tolstoy, War and Peace. Mae’n bosib mai stiwdios drama’r BBC ym Mhorth y Rhath yma ym Mae Caerdydd sy’n ymgorffori’r degawd hwn o gynnydd orau – gyda 50 milltir o geblau, 38 ystafell newid, 30 o welyau ysbyty, 23 ystafell olygu, 23 babi prosthetig, 16 Dalek, 2 flwch ffôn TARDIS, dwy dafarn ac un capel. Ond ry’n ni gyd yn gwybod bod llwyddiant yn golygu llawer mwy na brics a mortar. Mae wedi bod yn ymdrech tîm, sy’n cynnwys partneriaid ar draws y sector annibynnol, S4C, Llywodraeth Cymru a’r asiantaeth hyfforddi ar gyfer y sector, Skillset. Ac yn y diwedd wrth gwrs, talentau’r unigolion sy’n gwneud y gwahaniaeth creadigol pwysig – yr awduron, y cynhyrchwyr, y dylunwyr a’r artistiaid sydd wedi achub ar y cyfleoedd yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf, ac sydd wedi dangos i’r byd y gall Cymru fod yn wirioneddol flaenllaw. Dyma un o’r rhesymau pam y mae nosweithiau gwobrau BAFTA Cymru mor bwysig – mae’n gyfle i ddiolch i bawb sydd wedi chwarae eu rhan wrth gyflwyno Cymru i’r byd.

YEARS OF DOCTOR WHO BY RHODRI TALFAN DAVIES
54
Well, the secret is well and truly out now - Peter Capaldi will be 12th Doctor, and he’ll step in to Matt Smith’s distinguished shoes during this year’s Christmas special. It was thrilling to see the fanfare that welcomed Peter: the excitement that Doctor Who can generate half a century on never fails to astonish. The series, of course, will celebrate its 50th year in style on November 23rd. The impending anniversary is also a moment to ponder the impact of this evergreen series here in Wales. Doctor Who’s rebirth in Wales, almost ten years ago, was a watershed moment. To mix my metaphors, I think its sheer ambition and quality changed the game entirely – and created a real sense of possibility about Wales and our creative clout. Nearly a decade after Christopher Eccleston’s debut – under the guiding hand of Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner – does anyone seriously question Wales’ production credentials? The roll-call of network drama success from Wales since 2005 is prodigious, including Doctor Who, Casualty, The Indian Doctor (Rondo), Wizards vs Aliens, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Being Human (Touchpaper), Sherlock (Hartswood), Merlin (Shine), Torchwood, Da Vinci’s Demons (Starz/BBC Worldwide) and Upstairs Downstairs. There is plenty more to come too. A new
BBC ONE series, Atlantis (Little Monster), is currently shooting in Chepstow, while S4C and BBC are both supporting a major new drama production by Fiction Factory, Hinterland/Y Gwyll. Modern TV in Cardiff is working with writer Andrew Davies on a special drama, A Poet in New York, for BBC TWO and BBC Wales, to mark Dylan Thomas’ centenary year in 2014. And our in-house team are planning two major new drama series for BBC ONE: a spy thriller The Game and an epic adaptation of Tolstoy’s War and Peace. The BBC’s Roath Lock drama studios here in Cardiff Bay are perhaps the most physical embodiment of this decade of progress - with their 50 miles of cabling, 38 changing rooms, 30 hospital beds, 23 edit suites, 23 prosthetic babies, 16 Daleks, 2 TARDIS phone boxes, two pubs and one chapel. But we all know that success is about so much more than bricks and mortar. It’s taken a team effort including partners across the indie sector, S4C, the Welsh Government and the sectorial training agency, Skillset. And in the end, of course, it’s the individual talents that really make the vital creative difference - the writers, producers, designers and artists who’ve grasped the opportunities of recent years and demonstrated to the world that Wales can be truly world class. It’s one of the reasons why these BAFTA Cymru awards nights are so important – a chance to thank everybody who has played their part in taking Wales to the world.

GWOBR ARBENNIG BAFTA AM GYFRANIAD ARBENNIG I DELEDU: BAFTA SPECIAL AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO TELEVISION: 58
DEWI LLWYD
Ers i Dewi ymuno ag adran newyddion BBC Cymru ym 1980 mae wedi cyflwyno amrywiaeth eang o raglenni ar S4C ac ar Radio Cymru. Daeth yn ohebydd seneddol cyntaf y sianel, cyn iddo ddechrau cyflwyno ‘Newyddion’ ym 1986.
Since Dewi joined BBC Cymru Wales’s news department in 1980, he has presented a wide variety of programmes on S4C and Radio Cymru. He became the channel’s first parliamentary correspondent before starting to present ‘Newyddion’ in 1986.
Fel y prif gyflwynydd am dros chwarter canrif, bu Dewi’n gohebu ar rai o straeon mwyaf Cymru, Prydain a’r byd, o’r newyn yn Affrica yn yr wythdegau, yr uwch-gynadleddau rhwng yr arlywyddion Reagan a Gorbachev, hyd at ethol Nelson Mandela’n arlywydd du cyntaf De Affrica. Treuliodd Dewi gyfnod yn astudio newyddiaduraeth mewn prifysgol yn Washington D.C. ac mae wedi teithio’n ôl i ohebu’n gyson o’r Unol Daleithiau. Cafodd bleser aruthrol yn cyflwyno saith o raglenni etholiad cyffredinol, pedair rhaglen etholiad y Cynulliad heb anghofio dau refferendwm tyngedfennol. Cyflwynodd lawer o raglenni’r gyfres materion cyfoes, Taro 9, ac am ddeng mlynedd Dewi oedd cyflwynydd y rhaglen wleidyddol wythnosol, Maniffesto. Ers pymtheng mlynedd Dewi hefyd yw cadeirydd rhaglen drafod boblogaidd S4C, Pawb a’i Farn, ac mae’r fraint o gyfarfod â chynulleidfaoedd led led Cymru a thros Glawdd Offa yn rhoi boddhâd arbennig iddo. Cyflwynodd raglenni S4C o’r Eisteddfod Genedlaethol am flynyddoedd lawer, gan ail-ddechrau gwneud hynny eleni yn Ninbych. Enillodd wobr BAFTA Cymru i’r cyflwynydd gorau yn 1998, ac ers hynny mae tair rhaglen a gyflwynwyd ganddo wedi ennill gwobrau sef ‘Gwynfor’, ‘Dewi Llwyd ar Daith’, a ‘Newyddion 9/11’. Erbyn hyn Dewi yw cyflwynydd y ‘Post Prynhawn’ yn ddyddiol ar BBC Radio Cymru, yn ogystal â ‘Dewi Llwyd ar Fore Sul’, gan wneud hynny ddau ganllath o’i gartref ym Mangor.
As the main presenter for over a quarter of a century, Dewi reported on some of the biggest stories in Wales, Britain and the world, from the famine in Africa in the 1980s, and the summits between presidents Reagan and Gorbachev, to the election of Nelson Mandela as South Africa’s first black president. Dewi spent a period studying journalism at a university in Washington DC, and he has reported regularly from the United States. He took immense pleasure from presenting the coverage of seven general elections, four Assembly elections, as well as two crucial referendums. He presented many programmes in the current affairs series, ‘Taro 9’, and for ten years Dewi was the main presenter of the weekly political programme, ‘Maniffesto’. For the past fifteen years, Dewi has also chaired the popular S4C discussion programme, ‘Pawb a’i Farn’, and the privilege of meeting audiences from all parts of Wales and beyond Offa’s Dyke gives him particular satisfaction. He presented S4C’s coverage of the National Eisteddfod for many years, and returned this year at the Denbigh Eisteddfod. He won a BAFTA Cymru Wales award for Best Presenter in 1998, and three programmes that he has presented since then have also won prizes, namely ‘Gwynfor’, ‘Dewi Llwyd ar Daith’ and ‘Newyddion 9/11’. Dewi currently presents ‘Post Prynhawn’ every weekday on BBC Radio Cymru, as well as ‘Dewi Llwyd ar Fore Sul’, which are broadcast a mere two hundred yards from his home in Bangor.
