WELCOME

W Amanda Berry OBE Chief Executive of the Academy

elcome to this year’s British Academy Games Awards, BAFTA’s annual celebration of excellence in games. This evening, we reward the incredible talents behind the very best and most immersive games of the past year. The Awards may be held in the UK and produced by a British academy, but the industry is very much a universal business and this evening’s outstanding list of nominees reflects that. They hail from all corners of the globe and their backgrounds are as diverse as the games they have created. I’m delighted that the recipient of the Academy’s highest honour, the Fellowship, is David Braben OBE. David has been a leading light in the games industry for decades, helping to push the boundaries of the art form through technical innovation while, at the same time, creating games that are simply great fun to play. He joins an impressive list of games industry Fellows that includes Will Wright, Shigeru Miyamoto, Gabe Newell and Rockstar Games. My sincere thanks to the Games Committee, expertly chaired by Harvey Elliott; our juries; the BAFTA team, in particular Kelly Smith and Clare Brown; our fabulous new host, Rufus Hound; and all our partners who support us and believe in what we do. Have a wonderful evening.

his evening we celebrate the very finest practitioners the games industry has to offer today, but we also hope that these Awards will serve as an inspiration to the talents of tomorrow. By highlighting the fantastic achievements of our nominees, we aim to light the way for aspiring and emerging games-makers everywhere. This is a vital element of BAFTA’s charitable charter, with our yearround activities including specifically designed schemes to support, nurture and develop new talent. We run a wide-ranging, inclusive programme to help individuals with potential, regardless of their background, find the games career that suits them, and to help emerging stars take their next important steps within the industry. Thanks to your support, this includes developer talks, games showcases, debates, scholarships and networking, as well as our flagship Games Lecture series by inspirational practitioners such as Hideo Kojima and David Cage. Our BAFTA Young Game Designers activities give young people unique insights into the industry. Earlier today, we ran several events here at the Tobacco Dock, London, featuring a number of career surgeries and showcasing some terrific new independent games. BAFTA enables the industry to give something back, all year round. Apply for a BAFTA membership, or simply visit www.bafta.org to learn how you can support us in nurturing and developing the next generation of talent, giving them every chance to follow in your footsteps and helping safeguard the future of the industry.

THE COVERS GALLERY A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF THE SIX VARIANT COVERS FOR THIS BROCHUREÉ

F

or the past few years, the Games Awards brochures have featured the nominees for Best Game on its covers, using key art supplied by the developers. But in a year where the gaming landscape has changed so dramatically Ð with the consolidation of the next generation consoles, the ever-burgeoning mobile game market and the ubiquity of casual gaming – we decided to also switch things up for the covers.

THE NOMINATIONS

This year, in-house designer Joe Lawrence has created bespoke pieces of art that not only represent the six Best Game nominees, but also realise the dynamism, interactivity and multi-layered experience of modern gaming. Each cover features one central hero image, surrounded by another ‘multiple’ element from each game.

A LIEN: ISOL ATION “Following the iconic art style of the Alien universe, we chose to show Ripley alone in a field of alien eggs, representing the game’s intense claustrophobia and sense of danger.” Joe Lawrence

M A RIO K A RT 8 “The colourful and charming characters in the Super Mario universe left us spoilt for choice, but this cover would be incomplete without the moustachioed star and a few karting hazards.” JL

DESTINY “Bungie’s open world sci-fi adventure fully embraces the shared experience of next gen gaming. The cover features a range of characters to capture the game’s frantic energy.” JL

MIDDLE- E A RTH: SHA DOW OF MORDOR “The enemies in this game are full of character, so pitting ranger Talion against an army of orcs and goblins seemed like the perfect choice.” JL

DR AGON AGE: INQUISITION “Customisation is a vital part of this game, making it tricky to capture visually. The game’s titular dragons, however, felt like a natural adversary for the heroic Inquisitor.” JL

MONUMENT VA LLEY “The wonderfully minimal and distinctive design of Ida and her crow nemeses in the game lends itself beautifully to the art style of this year’s cover designs.” JL

A T FE C A H E LL DE OW M SH Y IP The recipient of this year’s Fellowship, David Braben OBE, helped change the face of gaming forever the day of open world space sim Elite’s launch in September 1984, influencing a generation of games creators (and players). He has gone on to become one of the UK’s leading trailblazers for innovation and continues to push the technical boundaries of gaming. Words by Chris Schilling

ong before his seminal space trading simulation Elite enraptured a generation of players, David Braben was already looking to the stars. In 1977, the worlds he had envisaged as an avid reader of science fiction novels had finally, thrillingly been brought to life by George Lucas. “At that age, I wanted to make films,” he admits, “but when I first got a computer, the idea that you could create things to interact with fascinated me.” Hollywood’s loss has been the games industry’s substantial gain. The pivotal moment for Braben came shortly before he attended university, when he received an Acorn Atom computer. An early experiment in BASIC saw him program a three-dimensional expanding starfield, but disappointed by the limited results, Braben decided to learn the assembler language and began to produce his own games. In his first year at Cambridge, he met Ian Bell, who was already writing a game called Freefall – and who also owned a more advanced BBC Micro(!). The pair shared ideas and code, and began to collaborate on the game that would become Elite. It was, in part, a reaction to the arcade-focused experiences of the era. “It sounds strange, but we were both quite jaded about games at the time,” Braben admits. “So many games [gave you] three lives, a few minutes of gameplay and 10,000 points would earn you an extra life. We felt that it didn’t need to be like that.” NEW FRONTIERS So began a trailblazing career. Elite was a game ahead of its time, from its open-ended structure to its use of procedural generation to fit eight galaxies’ worth of planets inside the tiny memory of the BBC Micro. And in flouting established design ideas, it encouraged publishers to take more risks. “It [sold] very well and shook things up a lot,” says Braben. “Between six and 12 months after Elite came

I wanted to make films, but when I first got a computer, the idea that you could create things to interact with fascinated me. out, we started to see a whole set of new games on the shelves that didn’t obey the rules.” Braben’s next game enhanced his reputation as an innovator. The groundbreaking solid 3D graphics of Lander helped sell the technical prowess of the Acorn Archimedes, and the bundled demo became a full game: the critically-acclaimed Zarch. Six years later, Frontier: Elite II achieved lift-off, a labour of love that nevertheless took its toll. Vowing never again to work alone on such a large project, Braben formed Frontier Developments, which under his stewardship has since produced a varied portfolio of games, from the enormously successful Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 to family favourite Kinectimals and the widely-lauded LostWinds.

LIFE OF PI During his time at Frontier, Braben became acutely aware that graduate applications had plummeted. The loss of Computer Science classes from the national curriculum inspired him to hold discussions with the government until, in 2009, he helped found the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a six-strong group which released an eponymous single-board computer. Cheap and accessible, it was designed to promote wider interest in computer sciences for a new generation. “We wanted to offer to the kids of our mindset today the same opportunities we had had,” he explains. Braben’s name ensured the project got the publicity it warranted, and the Pi is now the bestselling British computer ever. “We overtook the Spectrum a few weeks ago,” he adds proudly. The recent crowd-funded triumph of Elite: Dangerous shows Braben hasn’t lost any of his appetite for doing things differently, while his influence has

22

rarely been more apparent: Hello Games’ forthcoming No Man’s Sky brings the space exploration genre full circle by taking place, as Elite did, in a procedurally generated universe. Braben would simply like to be remembered for “making great games and helping people enjoy technology”. Beyond that, he should also be celebrated for empowering generations of players and game-makers alike to plot a course to the stars.

BAFTA ONES TO WATCH AWARD

IN ASSOCIATION WITH DARE TO BE DIGITAL

This award was launched in 2007 to encourage and reward innovation from emerging games designers. This year, 15 teams, consisting of university students, competed for the award, with their prototypes first showcased at Dare To Be Digital’s Dare ProtoPlay event, held in Dundee last August. Three of those games were shortlisted by a panel of industry experts to contest the BAFTA Ones to Watch award, based on their innovation, creativity, market potential and best use of technology. The teams were then given a short time to finesse their game before the final jury panel (right) selected the winner.

NEXT GEN

BAFTA does more than champion excellence in games: we actively seek the next generation of creative minds…

B

AFTA’s work with the games industry spans far beyond the red carpet. Through our expansive year-round programme of events and initiatives – including the crown jewel of our annual Games Lecture series, delivered by such inspirational practitioners as Hideo Kojima and Will Wright – BAFTA is committed to helping both established and emerging talent learn from award winners and nominees. We all know starting out in this highly competitive industry can be difficult, so our work begins at the grassroots level with initiatives such as the BAFTA Young Game Designers (YGD) competition. YGD provides young people and educators unique insights into the games industry, as well as access to the creative minds behind some of their favourite games through special workshops (below) and our dedicated website (ygd.bafta.org). For the competition itself, the young winners of the two annual awards (Game Making and Game Concept) are given the opportunity to develop their designs into fully fledged games with experts in their field. We’ve also introduced a new award in 2015, the YGD Mentor Award, to reward an individual who has inspired young people to consider a career in games. For those who have already taken their first steps into the industry, we also run numerous initiatives to help consolidate their careers and seek further

40

creative opportunities, including developer talks and games showcases. For instance, BAFTA Crew Games is a skills development network which aims to help support the careers of the brightest talents in the UK games industry and includes special masterclasses and networking days, among other events. Our flagship initiative for emerging stars is Breakthrough Brits, which offers a select few, highly talented individuals support, mentorship and exclusive networking opportunities for a year. Previous recipients have included Rex Crowle (above), who went on to win three BAFTAs, and Dan Pearce, who was nominated for Debut Game at last year’s Awards. If you know someone making a name for themselves in games, we’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s an outstanding member of your team, or an indie developer you just keep hearing about, please email breakthrough@bafta.org and tell us about them. Applications for 2015 open on 1 April. Please also consider offering your help and support for all our activities. You can find out more at bafta.org. By supporting BAFTA, you’re supporting the industry.
