WELCOME 2019 Welcome to the British Academy Scotland Awards 2019 – Scotland’s Screen Industries night of the year and what a year it has been. Tonight is a great opportunity to take the time to be proud of our achievements and to recognise the breadth of talent our country has produced – a great reminder as to why BAFTA Scotland is so important and this evening is so incredibly special. Those of you who have attended the Awards previously may have noticed our new, larger venue. We are delighted that this has enabled the new BBC Scotland channel to broadcast highlights of this evening’s celebrations at 10pm. Excited as I am to be welcoming you to this, the main event in BAFTA Scotland’s calendar, there’s so much more to the work done, year round. The weekly screenings programme, TV previews, events and masterclasses and of course our annual day for new and emerging talent: Guru Live Glasgow, which saw 600 individuals attend in Glasgow in March. We were very proud to offer bursaries for young people to attend this inspirational day from all over Scotland, underlining our work as a charity.
as new Full Members of the Academy based in Scotland. If you’re not a member, please think about becoming one, it not only benefits you but also the industry in Scotland. I’d like to thank the BAFTA Scotland Committee for giving their time and input throughout the year. Thanks also to Jude and her brilliant team for putting together this magnificent evening with limited resources. To all the industry professionals who participated on juries – no mean feat, given the increase in entry numbers! Huge thanks, also to our annual core supporters: BBC Scotland, STV, Screen Scotland and Channel 4. Our list of nominees tonight represents the best in Scotland, on behalf of BAFTA Scotland, congratulations to you all. Finally, have a wonderful evening and enjoy the celebrations. M A R G A R E T S C O T T Chair, BAFTA Scotland
BAFTA Scotland relies on Scottish membership income, sponsorship and ticket sales to run Scotland’s branch office in Glasgow, our annual Awards and our Learning and New Talent programmes. In 2019 we were delighted to announce an increase in new members across all tiers including actors, Sam Heughan, Chris Riley and writer Grant Morrison accepted

BAFTA UK CHAIR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the British Academy Scotland Awards and huge congratulations to all this year’s nominees. It has been a truly memorable year, and one in which we have received a record number of entries, an increase of 50% – proof indeed that the industry in Scotland is thriving! Congratulations in particular to this year’s two Special Award recipients, Script Supervisor, Pat Rambaut and the creative team behind Scotland’s favourite sitcom, Still Game (Director Michael Hines and performer/writers Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan) for their outstanding contribution to our industry. Each of those nominated tonight is inspirational for the next generation of talent. Celebrating outstanding individuals and creating opportunities for all, regardless of background, is at the heart of what BAFTA does. In particular, we are committed to addressing the issue of diversity and improving inclusion within Film and TV. Diversity standards are now an entry requirement for the British categories of our Film Awards, and this year we’re piloting the same standards in the Television Awards. In tandem with BAFTA’s many talent initiatives, we are bringing the industry together to safeguard the future of our industries by empowering diverse voices and allowing everyone to reach their full potential.
Since last year’s Scotland Awards took place, we have also begun the major redevelopment of our headquarters in London at 195 Piccadilly, into an international centre of excellence. This will allow us to double our charitable activity and reach thousands more career starters and those from underrepresented groups through scholarships, masterclasses and mentoring programmes. Thank you to Margaret Scott who continues to lead such a dedicated and enthusiastic committee here in Scotland and to Jude MacLaverty and the BAFTA Scotland team for their work on events, outreach activities and partnerships to support the growth of the industry. Together, let’s ensure our industries enjoy a robust, diverse and exciting future. I wish you all a fantastic evening.

BAFTA SCOTLAND IN 2019 BAFTA Scotland continues to run and develop a programme of events aimed at inspiring and nurturing emerging talent while also celebrating the art forms of film, television and games within Scotland. In March 2019, we produced the third edition of Guru Live Glasgow – the Scottish arm of BAFTA’s nationwide festival aimed at inspiring those early in their screen careers with panels and masterclasses. It was the second year we ran our Access Pass initiative where we offered 25 up-and-coming screen talent personalised 1-2-1 meetings and round tables with industry experts.
“Gaining an access pass has been an unforgettable experience, being a part of it has opened so many doors for me and really helped to launch my career in the AD department. I kept in close contact with both my mentors (Tommy Gormley & Douglas Mackinnon) and have had the best of years so far! Much of what I have gained has been thanks to Guru Live and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity!”
- Danielle Scott, Access Pass Holder 2018
We also successfully launched a travel bursary scheme to help individuals who would have struggled to afford travel/ticket costs for Guru Live Glasgow. This year we also rolled out our new Industry Insights initiative which brought together emerging practitioners and key talent from this year’s most exciting releases (The Bay, The Victim, Wild Rose…) for intimate roundtable discussions.

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION
PA T RAMBAUT Outstanding Contribution to Craft 2019 (In Memory of Robert McCann) Pat Rambaut has worked as a script supervisor (Continuity) on over 50 films spanning 30 years. Her first job was on The New Avengers with Joanna Lumley, where she was lucky to fall under the wing of the legendary Renée Glynne. Early on in her career, Pat moved to Scotland and a year later she worked with Bill Forsyth on his classic film, Local Hero. This was then followed by films such as John Boorman’s The Emerald Forest filmed in the depths of the Amazon and The Mission, where she worked with Roland Joffé and David Puttnam in Columbia. Pat continued to work both abroad and at home in Scotland. Some of the films she is known for are Housekeeping, Elizabeth, Bridget Jones’s Diary, City of Joy, Michael

Collins, Comfort & Joy, Silent Scream, The Big Man, House of Mirth, Strictly Sinatra and Peter Mullan’s The Magdalene Sisters. She has also written and directed a documentary on the architecture of Alexander Greek Thompson and in 2000 was shortlisted for the Creative Scotland Awards for her documentary about the regeneration of a derelict site into an awarding-winning Community Garden, combining her passions of film, photography and plants. Pat has trained several top script supervisors who work in the industry today, and was always keen to have a trainee working with her throughout her career. Pat is a retired member of The Guild of British Camera Technicians. Last year, Pat donated all her film scripts to the BFI archives to help future film makers.
OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION
Outstanding Contribution to Television 2019 First appearing on television in their iconic sketch show Chewin’ the Fat, Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill’s riotous characters Jack and Victor have been delighting audiences for over twenty-two years, with the delinquent pensioners receiving their own show in 2002. Jack and Victor first appeared in Kiernan and Hemphill’s sketch show Chewin’ the Fat as recurring characters, with minor differences from their counterparts in the series. As the show evolved, supporting characters assumed greater prominence within the ensemble cast of Winston (Paul Riley), Boabby (Gavin Mitchell), Isa (Jane McCarry), Tam (Mark Cox) and Navid (Sanjeev Kohli) becoming firm favourites.

STILL GAME
62 episodes, Scotland’s best loved sitcom (one episode was the most watched television show in Scotland in 2018) captured the hearts of the nation, with its hilarious blend of bunnets and Glasgow banter. The final show of the comedy was aired earlier this year. Jack, Victor, Winston, Boabby, Tam, Isa and Navid have become cultural icons: from children dressing up as the much loved characters at Hallowe’en to the show’s famous catchphrases entering the Scottish lexicon. The award will be presented to the key creative team behind Still Game. Writer/performers Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan who have created and written the show from the very beginning. Alongside them will be their longstanding creative collaborator, Michael Hines, who has directed every series.
Still Game became its own TV show in 2002 and ran until 2019. Over nine seasons and
