WELCOME 2015 My first year as Chair has seen BAFTA Scotland go from strength to strength We’ve hosted more events than ever. Masterclasses from the likes of the Executive Producer of True Detective, Richard Brown; brilliant young actor, Kevin Guthrie; special correspondent, Allan Little; make-up artist Morag Ross and author and comedian, Charlie Higson. And we have curated sessions on sound design for games; composing for film and tv and digital storytelling and we’ve hosted the first BAFTA Children’s Question Time outside of London. As a charity BAFTA Scotland, relies entirely on Scottish membership money, sponsorship and ticket sales to run the Glasgow office, the awards and the learning and events programmes. So I’m really pleased to say that after a concerted push, our membership rose by 20% last year. I’m keen to keep the momentum and increase the membership year on year. If you’re not a member, please think about becoming one, it not only benefits you but also the industry in Scotland. Join BAFTA! Many of our new members are students and career starters. We are doing a lot of work to help young people break into the industry. We are also looking at ways we can work with young people who might otherwise not think of the screen industries as a career path. Each year, our brilliant British Academy Scotland New Talent Awards are testament to that.
I’d like to thank the BAFTA Scotland committee for giving their time and wisdom across the year. Something we’re all very excited about is our new trophy which is unveiled for the first time tonight. I hope you all love it as much as we do. A huge thank you to everyone in the BAFTA Scotland office who have once again pulled out all the stops to give us a night to remember. Also to our colleagues at BAFTA in London and the branches, all our partners, suppliers and volunteers for working so hard towards tonight’s ceremony. Congratulations to all the nominees, I wish you all the very best of luck and I hope you have a wonderful evening. SARAH WALMSLEY Chair, BAFTA Scotland

BAFTA UK CHAIR’S MESSAGE It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s British Academy Scotland Awards. Every year the British Academy Scotland Awards play a vital role in recognising and rewarding the very best of the country’s moving image industries, which have a long history of producing exceptional work. Congratulations in particular to our Special Award honorees, the brilliant property master David Balfour, the highly influential Channel 4 broadcaster Dorothy Byrne and the much-loved actor Bill Paterson, now in his 70th year. Beyond tonight’s awards for film, television and games, BAFTA Scotland hosts a dynamic and varied programme of events here in Scotland. Our activity has expanded across the country and runs all year round as a result of our commitment to developing new and emerging talent and the growing appetite among BAFTA members – the leading network of film, television and games professionals – for events and initiatives that benefit their careers. At the time of writing we have produced 32 events since January 2015 alongside our weekly members’ screenings in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. We are about to launch a new initiative focusing on various crafts and skills, which will give an insight into the different jobs within the industry to our career starter and student members.
Thank you to the BAFTA staff here in Scotland, Jude MacLaverty and her dedicated team of Jenna Cunningham, Karen Rosie, Beverley McMillan, Emma Nicholson and Danielle Shields, who have all worked with such commitment on behalf of the Academy throughout the year; to the Committee, led ably by Sarah Walmsley; to our host Edith Bowman; and to BBC Scotland, STV and Creative Scotland for their continued support of our mission. Finally, I would like to congratulate the nominees for their outstanding achievements and for upholding the gold standard that is the British Academy Scotland Awards. Your talent and vision continue to raise the bar for the industry in Scotland. Have a lovely evening. ANNE MORRISON Chair of the Academy

INDUSTRY COMMENT 2015 It will come as no surprise that my perspective of Scotland and cinema comes very much from the point as one who views films rather than one who makes them. But then, as this is very much how the world views Scottish moving image culture this is not necessarily a bad thing… and as one who travels around the world the film festivals, usually singing the praises of local cinema and talent I’m increasingly convinced that Scottish films, voices, stories, creative talent and locations are in great demand. Of course, no one ever claimed working in the world of moving image would be an easy one. It is a fickle and often frustrating business given to fads and fashions, but at the same time when things do all fall into place and that all important little bit of luck comes into play it can be rewarding, exciting, challenging and maybe even enjoyable. It has only been my first year as Artistic Director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (in fact I don’t event celebrate one year in the post until March next year), but I think we were blessed with a little bit of Scottish luck for this year’s memorable edition. Not only did we open with the world premiere of Robert Carlyle’s Glasgow-set The Legend of Barney Thomson and close with the world premiere of Scott Graham’s Iona, but the whole festival was punctuated with projects showcasing the works of numerous Scottish filmmakers and talent.
These included Peter Mullan’s striking performance in Hector; Karen Gillan (also a juror at the festival) making her directorial debit with her short film Coward; James Cosmo’s moving performance in Pyramid Texts; the world premiere of Colin Kennedy’s Swung: the European premiere of Karen Guthrie’s powerful documentary The Closer We Get; the world premiere of documentaries such as Andrew Carnegie: Rags to Riches, Power to Peace, Battle Mountain and Big Gold Dream, plus short films including Greg Hemphill’s Gasping and Owen Rixon’s animation Toonocalypse. In addition, Ewan McGregor popped by to take part in a delightful talk about his career with Edith Bowman and also attended the European premiere of his new film Last Days in the Desert. In fact at Cannes, Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Europe and External Affairs, was prompted to say: “This year the Edinburgh International Film Festival is bursting with Scottish talent.” And while I can only hope that we have such great options for our 70th edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2016, the most satisfying thing about this year’s festival to a great extent was seeing so many film folk – from established performers and technicians through to up-and-coming talent – spend time celebrating the work; making new contacts; coming up with ideas and spending
11
quality time together in the Filmhouse bar well into the early hours. This in an industry that does not exist in splendid isolation and creative comings-together are always the best thing to help drive new projects. Of course, there have been a couple of films we sadly just couldn’t get into the festival this year despite best efforts from all around – the new version of Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender and Terrence Davies’ lovely Sunset Song – but (fingers crossed) there could well be great things to come. The culture secretary announced film and TV producers on location in Scotland last year spent some £445.2 million and Scotland’s video games industry has seen jobs and investment surge. It is perhaps simplistic to stress how important synergy and support is between the moving image industries, but a successful infrastructure can only benefit everyone in the same way that success breeds success. The more the cultural spotlight is shone on all the various strands of our shared industry then the more attention, development and trust will come our way. In the same way that we form part of an international industry that is brimming with creative ideas and projects so it is vital to embrace and celebrate new possibilities and relationships. From Danny Boyle talking of Trainspotting 2 and a remake of Whisky Galore in post-production through to Karen Gillan and Ewan McGregor making their debuts as directors, things do not rest in the world
of moving image culture. It is important we celebrate the big and the small…. the short films and the big budget features, the long-running TV series and the daring new documentaries, because the more great material that is made and shown and strikes a chord around the world the better – hopefully – it will be for all strands of our wild, weird and wonderful media. MARK ADAMS Artistic Director, Edinburgh International Film Festival

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION AWARDS
DAVID BALFOUR Outstanding Contribution to Craft (in Memory of Robert McCann) 2015 The extremely successful property master David Balfour has worked on a wide array of films that are highly admired for their artistic approach, including Hugo (2011), The Da Vinci Code (2006) and
The Mummy (1999). Born in Glasgow ‘when you could still get into the pictures for the Saturday Morning Matinee’, Balfour went on to travel the world ‘creating and manufacturing props and objects from different centuries’. His brother, Ross Balfour, worked as a master carpenter at Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre and secured David a job working on the fly floor and in the workshop of the famous venue. The artist credits his brother for being the greatest influence in his life who helped to shape his career: ‘He led me to the door, opened it and took me with him to discover the magical world of film’. When Ross embarked on a career in the film industry, David likewise followed where he had the opportunity to meet the late Scottish film director Charlie Gormley whose ‘passion, knowledge and enthusiasm for cinema and film-making’ motivated Balfour. Balfour has worked closely with specific directors who are recognised for their distinctive artistic creations such as Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese and Danny Boyle. One of his principal partnerships has been with Tim Burton, where he has worked as the property master for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Dark Shadows (2012) and the upcoming Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016). Balfour is currently working on the new Andy Serkis live-action film Jungle Book: Origins (2017).

BILL PATERSON Outstanding Contribution to Film & Television 2015 Bill Paterson has dedicated more than 45 years to acting for the stage, screen and radio. This well respected Scottish talent has worked on a myriad of both national and international film and television programmes, including The Killing Fields (1984), Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1986) and
Outlander (2014-15). Born in Dennistoun, Paterson made his professional acting debut in 1967 appearing alongside Leonard Rossiter in Bertolt Brecht’s The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui at Glasgow’s Citizens’ Theatre. After two years as an actor and assistant director of the Citizens’ Theatre for Youth, he joined Billy Connolly in The Great Northern Welly Boot Show at the 1972 Edinburgh Festival and became a founder member of John McGrath’s 7:84 theatre company, touring the UK and Europe with plays such as
The Cheviot, the Stag, and the Black Black Oil.
Paterson made the switch to the moving image in the late 70s when he starred in the BAFTA award-winning television play Licking Hitler (1978). Paterson will next be seen portraying Private Frazer in the highly anticipated Dad’s Army film (2016).
