elcome to this year’s British Academy Television Craft Awards. Tonight’s event offers a fabulous showcase for some of our very best behind-the-scenes talent, reinforcing a hard-earned reputation for excellence. We are delighted that the Awards will be streamed live on Twitter and YouTube for the first time, so that even more people can celebrate the skill and ingenuity of our UK practitioners and ensure that their work receives the recognition it deserves. We have seen some of the finest moments and achievements in both factual and fictional programming this year. The cream of the crop is celebrated here this evening and we congratulate all of the nominees, whose skills are admired around the globe and without whom our television industry would not be the dynamic, acclaimed and envied enterprise it is today. HBO’s hugely popular series Game of Thrones has benefited from the UK’s creativity since 2010 – consistently pushing boundaries and garnering an ardent fan base in the process. Filmed in locations all over Europe, the production’s home base since the very beginning has been in Northern Ireland, with many of the iconic sets housed in Belfast’s Titanic Studios. Much of the 700-plus behind-the-scenes talent involved is British and the show’s impact is undeniable. In recognition, we present Game of Thrones with one of the Academy’s highest honours, the Special Award, and congratulate all those who have made it such a global television phenomenon. Inspiring, developing and supporting the next generation of talent, whatever their background or circumstances, is central to much of what we do at BAFTA. It’s vital that we nurture a diverse workforce, with the skills and passion to prosper in our ever-evolving industries. We must provide a safe, professional working environment so that everyone is given the opportunity to develop to their full potential. Following the revelations of sexual assault and workplace harassment at the end of last year, we have worked closely with the BFI, Equity, Ukie and around 40 other organisations to develop principles and guidance that can be adopted by all of the screen industries, so that there is a shared understanding of respectful, inclusive working practices. Tonight we celebrate your incredible talent and we wish you all a very enjoyable evening. ¥

The success of the British television industry is illustrated on the cover of this brochure, showing that the contribution of co-productions and inward investment projects in the UK has nearly doubled in three years, from £252m in 2013 to a record of £477.8m in 2016 (represented by the silver and gold lines of the artwork, respectively). Indeed, 65 per cent of all investment in high-end production in the UK over that period came mainly from US companies, a just reflection of the high demand for British expertise and this country’s valuable resources. ormally, one makes hay while the sun shines, so who knew that winter was going to yield a bumper crop for the UK television business? But then again, that particular season has been coming for some time, as House Stark has been telling anyone who would listen for the past eight years. For such an epic saga as HBO’s Game of Thrones, it’s fitting that the series as a whole, across all its seasons, is receiving special recognition from BAFTA with the presentation of a Special Award, one of the Academy’s highest honours. “This award makes us extremely happy on behalf of the people who actually earned it – all our brilliant, talented, hard-working “This award makes us department heads and crew,” say extremely happy on executive producers behalf of the people who David Benioff and DB Weiss. “From the beginning, actually earned it – everyone involved all our brilliant, talented, understood that the show was meant hard-working department to exist as a 70plus hour whole, a single coherent heads and crew.” story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Costumes, sets, props, weapons, hair and make up... all were designed and built with both the past and future of the story in mind.” The pair note that like most multi-faceted film or television productions, all of these components go into making Game of Thrones the internationally successful genre television

phenomenon it’s become, with many, many unsung heroes working very hard to create its thrilling story. “They’re all creators, every bit as much as the actors, writers, producers or directors, and deserve to be recognised as such,” they add. For the uninitiated, the 2008 announcement of an HBO adaptation of George RR Martin’s fantasy epic, A Song of Ice and Fire, felt like an attempt to tap into the deepening hunger of fans of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, deprived of Tolkien product until the beginning of the Hobbit trilogy in 2012 (Game of Thrones would debut in April 2011). Fast forward to 2016 and news that 2019 would see the transmission of the eighth and final season was greeted by anguished cries from its millions upon millions of fans around the globe. Game of Thrones has become the embodiment of 21st century television success: just shy of 40 Emmys, ever-growing viewing figures and a direct pipeline into modern pop culture, with the likes of Hodor, Dothraki, Khaleesi and “You know nothing, Jon Snow” all entering common parlance. But all of that is just the gravy, because from a television production standpoint, the meat of the

The series has used many locations to bring its fantasy world to life, but most of the scenes in ‘the North’ are filmed in Northern Ireland. The country also serves as the production’s home base, with most interior scenes filmed in Belfast’s Titanic Studios. “We can’t say with certainty whether the combination of rigour, artistic daring and intellectual and historical curiosity our team exhibits is peculiarly British, but it feels that way to us,” Benioff and Weiss say about their UK crew.

foot in Westeros and Essos at the Mourne Mountains (doubling as Vaes Dothrak), Castle Ward (Winterfell), Magheramorne (Castle Black), and many more. Sadly, that final season is coming. UK fans and the industry alike no doubt wish it would last as long as a Westoros winter – and Benioff and Weiss say the feeling is mutual. “Northern Ireland has been so good to us for the past 10 years, as have its people,” they say, summing up their feelings. “If Game of Thrones helps to shine a spotlight on what Belfast and the country around it offer in terms of human and natural resources, and that draws more people here, be it in production, other industries, or purely leisure and enjoyment... that makes us very happy.” ¥

“We can only hope that the show has given back some fraction of what the country has given us.” The answer to that particular question must be a resounding yes. Beyond the 700-strong crew, 250-plus cast and gainful employment for Titanic Studios and UK effects houses, including BlueBolt, Screen Scene and Peanut FX, it’s estimated that Game of Thrones has benefitted the Northern Irish economy by more than £65 million, including a boost to tourism akin to ‘Middle-earth’ in New Zealand. Visiting fans and general holiday-makers have both been eager to set
