hank you for joining us for our celebration of the best television programmes of 2019 and the talented individuals who created them. Given the challenges of the past few months, we are pleased to be able to recognise their accomplishments, albeit in a uniquely different way. We’d like to thank all those who have made these Awards possible. Their willingness and enthusiasm to support these Awards, despite the difficulties caused by these unprecedented times, is a testament to how important television is to us all. The UK is a world leader in creating unforgettable and meaningful television, which has given us so much to talk about and share with friends, family and colleagues during lockdown. The office water cooler may have transformed into online chatrooms, but it’s clear our passion for excellent television has never been stronger. Celebrating these achievements is what BAFTA’s Awards are all about. We are very pleased to see so many first-time nominees this year, including several from BAFTA’s own new and emerging talent initiatives. However, we are also aware of the industry-wide imbalances reflected within some of the categories. Creating a more inclusive landscape has long been a key part of BAFTA’s charitable mission, which is why we run a number of initiatives to identify talent, regardless of background, at all stages of their careers and support them to achieve their potential. After the success of the introduction of the BFI Diversity Standards at the Film Awards in 2019, we are also looking into how we can adopt similar standards for the Television and Games Awards going forwards. We know there is still much work to be done and we will embrace all steps that lead us towards a more inclusive industry. With productions starting up again, now is a good time to re-examine the rulebook, not just on diversity but also sustainability, mental wellbeing and other pressing issues. BAFTA is working with partners to adapt our support to the changing needs of the industry. We believe talent is everywhere. We believe we must bring the industry together to tackle its environmental impact and inspire audiences to act for a sustainable future. We believe sharing best practice and encouraging collaboration on these issues will effect real change. Congratulations to all of this evening’s nominees. We wish you the best of luck.

British post-production powerhouse The Farm is one of the UK’s great film and television success stories. Not only is it a globally recognised, multi awardwinning company but it’s also a hotbed for some of the nation’s brightest upcoming craft practitioners. This is all down to the two guiding principles instilled by cofounders (and joint recipients of this year’s Special Award) Nicky Sargent and Vikki Dunn: nurture talent and keep promises. hen asking Nicky Sargent and Vikki Dunn, joint founders of UK post-production powerhouse The Farm Group, how they feel about winning a BAFTA Special Award, Sargent’s eyes widen with incredulity: “We literally can’t actually do anything – ask anyone!” Dunn laughs before getting back on script: “We feel really humbled and touched by it.” This initial exchange sets the tone for a lively conversation with the entrepreneurial pair that’s as candid, charming and no-nonsense as their approach to business. “We see this as an award to the sector,” says Sargent. “We hope we’re proof that you can run a good, professional company, treat people well and be loyal.” Sargent studied English at university before segueing from a publishing career into television. Dunn, meanwhile, started out in the business at satellite service BSB’s music channel The Power Station. They were thrown together at Soho post-production stalwart Molinare in the mid-90s. “When I first met Nicky I had long white hair extensions, ripped jeans and a liberal amount of false tan,” grins Dunn. “We were chalk and cheese. When was that?” “A hundred years ago,” deadpans Sargent, triggering another bout of shared laughter. The duo famously broke the ice over a bottle of wine – “Wine isn’t a lifestyle; it’s for life” says Sargent sagely – and their bond became so strong that when years of working for others finally took its toll and they left Molinare to set up their own venture, The Farm, in 1998, investors and colleagues went with them. “We’ll never forget the people who put their houses and futures on the line to join us,” says Sargent. “Aidan Farrell, Nigel Edwards and Tim Ellison – they’re still

the top guys at what they do. Great friends who showed tremendous bravery and loyalty. And we were doubly lucky to have such clients as Shameless and Skins producer Helen Flint, a role model in how to gets things done.” Over the span of 20-plus years, The Farm went from 12 people to 350-plus. BAFTAs, Emmys and Royal Television Society awards followed, not to mention offices in Soho, Bristol and Manchester, as well as running the BBC’s post-production in Media City. This success is down to their two guiding principles: nurturing talent and keeping promises.
“You can’t go wrong if you strive to deliver what you promise,” says Sargent, “whether that’s a long-term career employee or the best job for a producer. If you find young and talented people, trust, nurture and encourage them... That’s where really good businesses are made.”

“If you’re talented you will progress,” adds Dunn. “There’s no hierarchy; we’ve always had an open door policy. We see The Farm as a platform for our team. They can see all sides of production and post-production, which helps them realise what they want to do.” As prolific sponsors of industry initiatives and events that promote equality and inclusion, the duo are typically matter-of-fact about their championing of diversity. “We have always chosen the right person for the job,” shrugs Dunn. “We’ve never thought about whether we need to have more women or more diversity.” “We have always seen past that,” adds Sargent. “It should be normal. We think it is normal.” Having sold The Farm last year to LA-based Picture Shop, Sargent and Dunn are still heavily involved in the company but have begun to look towards the future with fresh eyes, albeit tight lips. “It’s an exciting time for us personally,” Sargent smiles. “Watch this space!” • 25

ScreenSkills is the industry-led skills body for the UK’s screen industries. We help grow and sustain the skilled and inclusive workforce which is the foundation stone of the UK’s global screen success. The High-end TV Skills Fund, managed by ScreenSkills, supports career development opportunities for crew and talent working in high-end television, from new entrants to executives. Since the fund was established in 2013 at the same time as the tax credit, more than £16m has been invested in identifying skills gaps and funding practical training programmes to support people from all backgrounds and the whole of the UK to enter and progress in the industry – supporting the production of the outstanding content being celebrated by BAFTA. We congratulate all the Photography & Lighting: Fiction nominees and thank all the nominated productions across all categories who contribute to the High-end TV Skills Fund. The Covid-19 crisis has thrown up new challenges – but the old ones have not gone away. We have responded to the immediate demands by developing coronavirus basic awareness on production training that is available free online. We are also delivering mental health training to help heads of departments and managers support their crews to return to production. However, pre-Covid concerns, including creating a more inclusive workforce and supporting talent in the nations and regions, remain a priority. We plan new iterations of successful programmes, such as First Break for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Unconscious bias remains an important area where we are seeking to give the industry a better understanding of how they can effect real change. During the pandemic, we moved much of our training online and the development of effective online learning will make it easier for people to access quality training, wherever they are based in the UK, such as our conhensive leadership and management programme. Current support also includes expert-led learning sessions, with insights from productions from Doctor Who to Peaky Blinders. Our established programmes, such as Trainee Finder, with paid placements for new entrants, and Make a Move, to help people step up into a more senior role will continue to help build capacity. This will be important in ensuring the industry bounces back.
