WELCOME In what has been such a difficult year for so many – across our industries, at home in the UK and in the wider world – it’s such a joy to be able to play host to a celebration of the remarkable. To win a BAFTA is always a mark of excellence, but to be nominated in a year like no other, where uncertainty has reigned, is a testament to the talent, creativity and perseverance of our industry. We congratulate all of this evening’s nominees: they are the very best at what they do. Our Awards remain a unique celebration of all that’s good, moving, provocative and powerful about television, championing talent both in front of and behind the camera. Covid-19 has created many challenges for the television industry. Productions have undergone multiple stop-starts; cast and crew have had to find new ways of working together, with pre-production often including periods of self-isolation; technology has been both a saviour and a hindrance, when it breaks down; and travel, at home and overseas, has been halted, all impacting on the creative process. Much of our industry is made up of freelancers, too, and job security, as well as finances, have been a huge cause for concern. And yet, as the nominations highlight, the industry has shown incredible resilience and resistance, pulling together like

never before, to produce stunning works. As we move towards a more open world, we are optimistic about the future. BAFTA has faced its own challenges during this time. In taking a remote working stance, our staff have reduced travel and emissions, which not only contribute to a cleaner environment but benefit productivity and well-being, too. We have identified that flexibility and staying connected both support wider well-being for not just our staff but also our artists and our clients. This is something we are passionate about projecting, in our organisation and throughout the industry. As agents representing freelance technicians and production personnel, the last year has been the most challenging we have ever known. Over a 10-day period in March 2020, more than 90 percent of our clients lost their jobs and more than 75 percent of them were not covered financially by either of the government support schemes. The industry shut down for several months, and with it the jobs we do as agents. It was a very frightening time. However, we are incredibly proud of our team and our clients, and how everyone dealt with this unique and hugely difficult set of circumstances. This truly is an industry of resilient and indomitable individuals. The thing we are most proud of at Sara Putt Associates is being a community, a family; and we have never felt that more strongly than in the last year. We had tea parties on Zoom, a quiz night and we ran a virtual short film competition for our trainees, with a gala
screening evening including a virtual red carpet. We shared recommendations for box sets, sourdough bread and knitting patterns. We are also very proud of BAFTA’s response to the pandemic. The way it moved events for the freelance community online, the financial support it offered freelancers via the Film and TV Charity and the work that so many BAFTA members, and indeed our own clients, did around the Production Protocols, which allowed the industry to get back to work by the summer – a huge achievement in itself. Good things have come out of this time. That enhanced sense of community, a little more time to build relationships online, a little more kindness perhaps. Also, many have found incredibly creative solutions to filming during a global pandemic, some of which we see rewarded here this evening. Looking forward, the television industry is buoyant, busy and employing more freelancers than ever before, and hence it is vital for us to work even harder to nurture new talent and new voices. Other concerns we were already working to address came to the fore during lockdown, such as the treatment of freelancers. Training, such as our leadership and management programme, is designed to give freelancers tools to be better managers, while everyone can learn from the Tackling Bullying And Harassment At Work e-learning module. Longstanding pre-Covid-19 concerns haven’t gone away. Creating a more inclusive workforce and developing talent UK-wide is critical. We are running new iterations of successful programmes, such as First Break for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and our role in building capacity will continue with programmes such as Trainee Finder, with paid placements for new entrants, and Make a Move, to help people step up into a more senior role. The priority remains on investing in addressing grade shortages in areas including production accounts, line producers and locations as HETV production continues to grow exponentially. You can’t make great television without investing in the people.
