very warm welcome to the Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards. Last month, we honoured the very best behind-the-scenes talent at our Television Craft Awards, and tonight we celebrate the programmes themselves and the extraordinary performances within them. The images we see on our screens are the culmination of hundreds of ideas, thousands of hard choices and countless hours of craft, as depicted on the front cover of this brochure. Tonight’s Awards are a celebration of outstanding achievement in television, and this year our revised entry criteria ensured that we are recognising excellence on a wider scale. As a result, tonight’s nominations celebrate work that has been undertaken in the UK and created by home-grown talent, regardless of where its funding has come from, reflecting how British television is operating on a truly global stage. Enlightening the public about the range of careers available, inspiring the next generation to enter the industry and giving talented individuals the support they need to succeed are a huge part of what we do. We do this because we are committed to ensuring the future of our industry, and we are aware that this future depends on diverse voices and talents from every background coming through. How and where audiences are watching may be changing, but the work we honour tonight shows

how television is still firmly cemented in the fabric of our society, both reflecting and shaping our cultural landscape. Great television has the power to connect people and introduce audiences to new worlds, by virtue of the creativity of the many talented people in the industry. Tonight’s hugely talented Special Award recipient is one such individual. As former commissioning editor of the BBC’s Storyville strand and one of the world’s key players in the field of documentarymaking, Nick Fraser’s career has been dedicated to educating audiences by exploring unknown realities and telling stories that aren’t often heard. Tonight, we also bestow the Academy’s highest honour on the wonderful Joanna Lumley. As one half of the infamous Absolutely Fabulous duo, and with a body of work that includes The New Avengers, A Rather English Marriage, Sensitive Skin, as well as her more recent travelogue programmes, Joanna’s name has a central place at the heart of British television. We are delighted to be celebrating her creative achievements with the Fellowship this evening. A huge thank you to the Television Committee and its chair and deputy chair, Krishnendu Majumdar and Emma Morgan; to all our juries; to the BAFTA team; to our fantastic host, Sue Perkins, and to all of our brilliant partners. ational treasure’ is an overused term but not when it applies to the recipient of this year’s BAFTA Fellowship, Joanna Lumley. Creating Patsy and Purdey – two of the most iconic female characters on British television – would surely be enough on its own to merit the award, but they are only a part of Lumley’s almost 50-year career in the moving image arts. “It’s extraordinary – completely unexpected and therefore even more thrilling,” she says. “The Fellowship is an honour that you think of going to other people.” Lumley was smitten by acting as a young girl after appearing in a play at her Army school in 1950s’ Malaya. “Although it was terrifying being on stage, I had an instinct that this was where I would be, like it or not, in the future,” she recalls. “I was always a great show-off and, as I grew up, it seemed a better job than working.” Following boarding school in England, Lumley found work as a model in the giddy swirl of swinging London. “I just fell into it,” she says, adding, in typically selfdeprecating fashion: “It was London in the 60s and, quite honestly, everybody was a model. I was quite good at it, but I didn’t want to do it at all.” A chance meeting at a party with the Royal Shakespeare Company and film actor, Richard Johnson, led to a small role in 1969 spy spoof, Some Girls Do. Lumley recalls she had just three words in the film – “Yes, Mr Robinson” – but they were enough to earn her an Equity card. In the same year she made her first small screen performance in The Mark II Wife for BBC One’s longrunning The Wednesday Play, shot in extraordinarily long takes. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared in my life – it was done like a filmed play. That was a baptism of fire,” she notes.

The early 1970s were tough, partly, Lumley feels, because she was saddled with a past as a model. For television producers, she says, “that meant you couldn’t speak, it meant you had no brain. “I was very skint at the time; I couldn’t get arrested as far as work was going. I was playing a tiny part in Steptoe and Son or The Cuckoo Waltz; just one episode here and there at £60 a go.” Coronation Street offered some respite: “I was in eight episodes and I hoped they would keep me on for longer. But the [producers] told me I was a ‘device – Ken Barlow asks you to marry him, you say no and then you’re gone.’ I loved doing Coronation Street. I was as proud as punch.” Less redoubtable characters would have had enough by now, but Lumley stuck with it and was rewarded when ITV revived The Avengers in 1976. “The idea was that there would be a young manwoman team who would assist Patrick Macnee’s John Steed. Gareth Hunt and I auditioned together and they thought the chemistry was good. It was a heck of a thing to get into – the queue for wanting

Following in the footsteps of Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg and Linda Thorson must have been intimidating, but Lumley made the role her own, sporting a muchimitated chic pudding-bowl haircut and stylishly dispatching villains. The haircut was Lumley’s idea: “I thought Purdey was a tough cookie: I wanted to be a tomboy and cut my hair.” But the producers hated it: “They said, ‘We don’t have heroines with short hair. If it goes wrong, you’ve got to pay for a wig.’”

Moving deeper into the realms of fantasy, Lumley’s next big role saw her paired with David McCallum, playing an alien in ITV’s sci-fi series Sapphire & Steel (1979-1982): “David, the great Ilya Kuryakin from The Man from U.N.C.L.E., was a joy to work with. It was a very spooky and imaginative show – people loved it.” Then, in the early 90s, came perhaps the role Lumley was born to play. Patsy Stone was simply a gift for an actress of Lumley’s comic talents. “I was sent the script for the pilot episode of Absolutely Fabulous, written by Jennifer Saunders, and I’d never read anything so funny,” she recalls. The Bolly-swigging, drug-snorting comic grotesque that appeared on the
screen, however, had yet to take shape. “I got the part and I thought the thing to do was to try to make Jennifer laugh – she did and it caught fire,” Lumley notes. “Jennifer is so perceptive and generous that she sees what you’re doing and writes for it.” Lumley is a past recipient of BAFTA honours, winning two awards for her performances in Absolutely Fabulous and a Special Award in 2000 – along with Blackman, Rigg and Thorson – for The Avengers. She was also nominated for a BAFTA in the Actress category for her performance, alongside Tom Courtenay and Albert Finney, in 1998’s A Rather English Marriage. This is one of Lumley’s favourites and she is also fond of her work in the comedy-drama Class Act

uge piles of VCRs and DVDs sit precariously around the house as Nick Fraser ploughs through them, trying to find the best, most gripping and thought-provoking documentaries he can. “I can no longer recall how many thousands of films I have seen,” he says. “The irony is that for a long time I didn’t really like them.” His epiphany came when he watched the landmark documentary Hoop Dreams in 1994, about two black innercity Chicago teenagers, both very gifted at basketball, who are recruited into a predominantly white school with mixed fortunes. “I found many docs to be staid and predictable… I became interested in them out of a hunch: that they [were] about to become important, and that I should try and stake some sort of claim in a new field.” It was at this point he became editor of Storyville (circa 1997), a BBC strand of documentaries, and started to make his mark commissioning and executive producing films from all over the world. “I realised I’d embarked on a new quest – for the perfect non-fiction story,” he recalled in The Guardian in 2016. Since that initial revelation in the 1990s, he has commissioned and funded films that have, between them, gone on to win five BAFTAs, four Oscars, 15 Griersons, three Peabodys, and three International Emmys. His films get to heart of the story, reflecting the day’s social and political landscape. This was instilled in him in his earlier career as a news reporter, writing up stories on the United Nations for The Times. He went on to write five non-fiction books, including one about Eva Peron in Argentina, after getting bundled into a car at knifepoint in Buenos Aires, and another about far right extremism, for which he followed around Holocaust deniers David Irving and Jean-Marie Le Pen.

While his early career was based around writing, the thread of journalistic storytelling is consistent throughout his work, it now just resides in a different medium. Like so many of those working behind the scenes in television, he beavers away in the background, spending interminable days listening to pitches, uncovering stories and nurturing talented young filmmakers, helping to hone their narratives, identify gems and bring them to a wider audience. “Within the dullest doc, I usually find something interesting,” he told The Guardian in 2011. “In an age when television drama is predictable, docs offer us real, often alien voices. They also fill some of the void left by the emptiness of much television reporting.”
Before joining the BBC more than 20 years ago, Fraser ran an independent documentary company and when Channel 4 started, he was put in charge of its religious programming, producing shows that were low on theology and high on mischief. A great devourer of books and articles, Fraser has found inspiration for his films in the most unlikely of spots. Among his most left-field commissions have been a love letter to pigs, called Oink!; a look inside the world’s biggest Chinese restaurant; and The Show of Shows (2015), a film about circuses using only BFI archive footage and soundtracked by the band Sigur Rós. His films comfortably mix high and lowbrow concepts, but all of them explain something compelling about the world. “Documentaries

are a public good, comparable to serious reporting,” he says. “They have become one of the means by which we connect to the contemporary world, making sense of it.” Many of the docs that Fraser is most proud to have worked on are those that have had the toughest messages, such as Taxi to the Dark Side (2007), about the US military’s use of torture in Afghanistan; Project Nim (2011), about a chimp who was treated as a human; and The House I Live In (2012), about mass incarceration in the United States. In 2007, he helped launch a global project called Why Democracy, broadcasting 12 films from around the world. One of them, Please Vote for Me, introduced the concept of elections to a classroom full of Chinese primary school children, and it is now used as an educational tool. It’s this wide focus on stories from across the world that propels him. One such film is India’s Daughter (2015), about the gang rape and murder of 23-year-old Jyoti Singh in Delhi in 2012. Banned by India’s Supreme Court, the film went viral there after its broadcast was brought forward by the BBC and it was uploaded

“I realised I’d embarked on a new quest – for the perfect non-fiction story.” to YouTube. It is a hugely important film, a tough and honest piece of journalism that was later given a Peabody award. Encountering filmmakers at film festivals across the world, from Incheon to Johannesburg to Guangzhou, and finding these obscure tales is hugely rewarding. But this evening, Fraser’s contribution to factual filmmaking is being recognised with the Special Award. “I’m really grateful to BAFTA for this award, and hopefully it will make people look again at docs,” says Fraser. “BAFTA does a lot to encourage young people to get into making television, and that’s really important. Without these new voices, we would not be able to find these stories.”

Much of Fraser’s role as commissioning editor and executive producer has been to fund documentaries, using money from the BBC and clubbing together with other broadcasters to raise the necessary finances. And it’s been a real struggle at times, with budgets slashed and the form often derided as a niche pursuit; documentaries have been criticised from various quarters as pretentious, manipulative with the truth and simply full of lies. One of Fraser’s main contributions has been to champion the genre and he is currently writing a book about why documentaries matter. “A cultural snobbery still surrounds docs,” he noted in 2012, in an essay for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, entitled ‘Why Documentaries Matter’. “They’ve been regarded as filler primarily, though less so recently… but they’re among the least valued, and most interesting, cultural forms of our time. Nowadays, it’s common to hear documentary film described as the new rock’n’roll.” At his perch at the BBC, Fraser has witnessed that transformation first-hand over the past 20-odd years, taking part in the sea change and also seeing viewers’ hunger for such films boom. Fraser is proud that, despite their original broadcast slot on less populated channels, such as BBC Four
for Storyville, his films have regularly picked up some of the highest ratings on iPlayer. “Documentaries are an inexpensive, vital part of public television. Television channels should get to love them more, instead of consigning them to poor slots, as an afterthought.” This prompted Fraser to eventually leave his post at the BBC and start on a new project called Yaddo, an online platform created specifically to stream documentaries. It’s a form of storytelling he continues to love and support. “My life has been spoiled by docs,” he says. “I cannot deal with most fictional representations anymore – because reality seems too interesting.” Isabelle Fraser is a business reporter at The Telegraph. THE SPECIAL AWARD BOBBY WARANS
Bobby Warans has dressed the sets of television’s biggest hits for more than four decades. His props adorn a huge variety of shows, from The Young Ones to Strictly Come Dancing. He studied at art college before joining the BBC as a clerk in 1968, which led to an attachment to the props department. A career working in drama beckoned, until The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show offered a glimpse of a different future. “I did the Christmas special and thought, ‘I’m getting paid to do something I really enjoy – it was all glitter, glitter, glitter, and lots of Hollywood,’” he says. Warans left the BBC in the late 1990s, setting up his own business, Bobby’s Props, and remains a busy man today. He has worked on every series of Strictly Come Dancing and recently provided props for The Royal Variety Performance on ITV and two BBC shows, the sitcom Episodes and the revived Tracey Ullman’s Show.

Powerful storytelling stays with us throughout our life, entertaining, educating and sometimes provoking through satire and tragedy, drama and comedy, the truth and pure fiction. The modern narrators of such tales are the practitioners of our era’s most popular artforms – films, television and games – creating stories from in front of the cameras and behind the scenes. They are the raconteurs, the biographers, the poets, the historians and the entertainers. But an empty room tells few tales: enter the storytellers...

A D EEL A K H TA R Already with one BAFTA nomination to his name (in the Supporting Actor category for Utopia in 2015), Akhtar has this year been nominated again, for Leading Actor for his gripping performance in Murdered by My Father. Elsewhere in 2016, he also featured in The Night Manager and earlier this year he starred in crime drama Unforgotten. NIKKI A MUK A-BIRD Amuka-Bird has a Leading Actress BAFTA nomination for her outstanding performance in NW, the drama based on Zadie Smith’s 2012 novel of the same name. In the last year, she also featured in brooding 70s-set crime drama Quarry, based on the novels of Max Allan Collins, which The Guardian described as “the perfect antidote to Christmas TV”. M O RV EN CH R IST I E Scottish actress Christie has been captivating viewers with fine performances in crime drama Grantchester for the past three years (season three has just started airing on ITV), based on the short stories of James Runcie. She also stars as Alison Hughes, a mother struggling to come to terms with the revelation that her child has been diagnosed as autistic in drama series The A Word. M I CH A EL A CO EL Actress and writer Michaela Cole has won two BAFTAs, for Female Performance in A Comedy Programme and Breakthrough Talent at the Television and Television Craft Awards respectively in 2016. Both were for Chewing Gum, the E4 comedy she wrote six episodes for, as well as starred in as the Beyonce-obsessed Tracey. J O D I E CO M ER Another nominee in the Leading Actress category this year, Comer has been rewarded for her moving performance in Thirteen, the BBC Three drama about a woman who escapes her kidnapper after being held captive for 13 years. Comer also starred as the ill-fated Beryl Evans in the mini-series Rillington Place, based on the true story of serial killer John Christie (played by Tim Roth).
K AYO D E E W U M I Named as a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit in 2016, Ewumi burst onto our television screens last year in comedy #HoodDocumentary, which he co-created and starred in as wannabe grime artist Roll Safe (RS). He is soon to appear in the return of one of the nation’s most popular 70s’ BBC sitcoms, Are You Being Served?. DA N I EL M AYS In 2016, actor Mays was a new addition to the third series of crime drama Line of Duty, and he made an immediate impact, receiving a BAFTA nomination in the Supporting Actor category for his troubles. He also featured in two big screen outings last year, the remake of Dad’s Army (as the fast-talking spiv Walker) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. D I A N E M O RGA N Morgan is perhaps best known to viewers as the well-meaning but ill-informed Philomena Cunk in Charlie Brooker’s Screen Wipes and spin-off faux docs, Cunk on Christmas and Cunk on Shakespeare (for which she’s been BAFTA nominated). She continued to demonstrate her comedic chops as Mandy in Rovers, created by her former sketch duo partner, Joe Wilkinson. PH O EB E WA L L ER- B R I D G E It’s been quite a year for writer and actress Waller-Bridge, with two Television Craft BAFTA nominations (for Breakthrough Talent and Writer: Comedy) and a Television Award nomination for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme. The latter two were for her BBC Three comedy, Fleabag, with Breakthrough Talent also including her six-part series for Channel 4, Crashing. R EG G I E YAT ES Yates has been a familiar face on UK television screens since an early age (appearing in Desmond’s at aged eight). In 2016, he presented Black is the New Black, a series examining black British culture and featuring interviews with prominent figures from politics, business, sport, religion and science. Younger viewers may also know him as the titular voice of Rastamouse. He was BAFTA nominated for Smile in 2003.
