Among all the crafts involved in the creation of a television show, props is perhaps the most varied and, often, most bizarre. From gleaming glitter ball trophies to giant chocolate eclairs, prop master Bobby Warans has seen and done it all over an illustrious career. In appreciation for his unwavering dedication and exceptional talent for his craft, Warans is the recipient of BAFTA’s Special Award…

B

obby Warans, who is being honoured with the Special Award this evening, has dressed the sets of television’s biggest hits for more than five decades. Today’s viewing audience can see his props adorn Strictly Come Dancing; older viewers will recall his sterling work on The Two Ronnies and The Young Ones. Warans has no regrets from a lifetime working with props… well, perhaps just one. “If I had a pound for every time I’ve been asked to find that moose’s head from Fawlty Towers, I’d be a very rich man,” he says, recalling the episode where the head fell on hapless waiter Manuel. “We never used to keep props in those days. I wish I’d kept everything – now I would be flogging it all on eBay,” he adds, laughing. Having studied at art college in Kingston, Warans joined the BBC as a clerk in 1968, “to get a foot in the door”, which led to an attachment to the props department. “I took to it like a duck to water – I loved it,” he recalls. Warans’ first jobs were as an assistant on long-running cop series Z-Cars and Dixon of Dock Green – “I sound 110, don’t I?” he says – before he took charge of props on The Carnforth Practice, a short-lived BBC Two drama about a solicitor. A career in serious drama beckoned, until The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show offered a glimpse of a different future: “The other prop buyers looked down on light entertainment – all they wanted to do was drama. But I did the Christmas special and thought, ‘I’m getting paid to do something I really enjoy – it’s all glitter, glitter, glitter and lots of Hollywood.’” In the 1970s, money was no object. “We didn’t have a budget – shows just cost what they cost. It was a golden time at the BBC,” he notes. One of the prop master’s duties was to choose prizes from John Lewis for The Generation Game, Bob’s Full House and Blankety Blank, then hosted by the “lovely Les Dawson… The Generation Game had a budget of, I think, £2,000, which was a lot of money in those days, to buy 20 prizes a week, including the cuddly toy, of course,” Warans recalls.

5

He added sitcoms to his roster of shows, including the anarchic The Young Ones and Bottom, in which Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson frequently destroyed his props. Mr Blobby, the bulbous pink figure from Noel’s House Party, proved even more destructive: “He was a thing possessed – we had lovely antique tables smashed to smithereens.” Warans left the BBC in the late 1990s, setting up his own business, Bobby’s Props, and remains a busy man in the industry. He has worked on every series of Strictly Come Dancing, one of his favourite shows, and recently provided props for The Royal Variety Performance on ITV and two BBC shows, the sitcom Episodes and the revived Tracey Ullman’s Show (Warans also worked on Three of a Kind in the early 1980s, the series that helped launch Ullman’s television career). It is the lot of the prop master to deal with odd requests, and the shows he has worked on have frequently asked for some strange objects. But some of the weirdest requests didn’t even feature in the shows. For instance,

SEL EC T CR ED I TS Among his impressive credits in the industry, Bobby Warans has worked on the following shows. This is just a small selection: A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Absolutely Fabulous, Alexei Sayle’s Stuff, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, The Armstrong and Miller Show, Before They Were Famous, Blankety Blank, Bob Monkhouse: A BAFTA Tribute, Bob’s Full House, Bottom, The Carnforth Practice, Episodes, French and Saunders, The Full Wax, The Generation Game, Goodness Gracious Me, Horrible Histories, Judi Dench: A BAFTA Tribute, The Kenny Everett Television Show, The Man from Auntie, The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show, Mum, Noel’s House Party, Open All Hours, Pop Idol, The Richard Blackwood Show, Roland Rat: The Series, Room 101, The Royal Variety Performance, Siblings, Strictly Come Dancing, Three of a Kind, Tracey Ullman’s Show, The Two Ronnies, Victoria Wood: Live in Your Own Home, The Young Ones

Warans recalls being asked to refit US comedian Joan Rivers’ dressing room entirely in pink when she filmed her 1986 BBC show, Joan Rivers: Can on light entertainment… But We Talk? “We gutted this room, wallpapered and carpeted it, and brought in furniture all in pink. thought, ‘I’m getting paid to do She spent the whole time in a crappy dressing room next door… it was bizarre.” something I really enjoy.’” Strange indeed but nothing compared to the curious incident Warans experienced working with Dame Shirley Bassey. It happened during a visit to a Bond Street jewellers with the songstress to borrow some real gems for a performance of ‘Diamonds are Forever’. Accompanied by the Old English Sheepdog that was a feature of her 1970s shows, “Shirley was playing with the diamonds and the bloody dog swallowed them – they wouldn’t let us out of the shop until he’d done his ‘whatnots’.” A diamond in the ‘ruff!’, so to speak. Most television practitioners have experienced their fair share of ‘whatnot’ shows – among the great and the good – but a quick glance at Warans’ credits reveals just how many genuine classics he’s worked on over the decades. It’s really quite an extraordinary list (see box out), each show made all the better by Warans’ talent for his craft, and why he’s a worthy recipient of one of the Academy’s highest honours. He also knows how to tell a good tale or two…

The HotCam team have pioneered multi-camera de-rig systems, allowing our clients the freedom to work anywhere they choose, from fixed rigs on a coach touring the continent or a desert island, to a large multi-camera studio setup at the London Palladium. At the heart of any successful production is the creativity, talent and teamwork of those behind the scenes. A cross-section of these individuals are recognised in this year’s Entertainment Craft Team award, and it is their commitment and dedication to their craft that make us proud to sponsor this category for the 11th year running. The British Academy Television Craft Awards is a highprofile accolade honouring and acknowledging the vital contribution made by those working behind the camera. These Awards raise awareness of the number of vital cogs involved in making a production come to fruition. It is a privilege for M·A·C and Make-Up Artist magazine to be involved with the incredible work that these people do every day. The Make Up & Hair Design category reinforces M·A·C and Make-Up Artist magazine’s ongoing support to the industry and honours the creativity of the make up and hair designers who bring characters and plots to life. Founded in 1998, The Farm Group is an award-winning post-production company working on a huge range of high-end television and drama, across a multitude of genres. The Farm is proud to have been part of some of the most notable scripted and unscripted series over the years, including the technically and creatively groundbreaking Wallander, trans-Atlantic hit Downton Abbey, award-winning Utopia and the new 10-part series, Riviera, alongside such hit shows as Britain’s Got Talent, 24 Hours in A&E and The Grand Tour. Nurturing and developing talent from within lies at the heart of The Farm’s ethos, which can be clearly seen in the talented creative pool that includes numerous editors, colourists and dubbing mixers, as well as post producers, who all began life at The Farm as runners. Working closely in association with bodies such as Sara Putt Associates and MAMA Youth Project, The Farm pledges to continue to support the development of industry talent. The Farm shares this mantra with BAFTA, which, as an organisation, galvanises the best creative and entrepreneurial talent and encourages investment of time and resources in the young. The Farm is proud to be the Official Post Production Partner to BAFTA and wishes to congratulate all the winners and nominees at the Television Craft Awards in 2017.

Microsoft is honoured to support the British Academy Television Craft Awards for the second year running and celebrate the unsung creative heroes behind the screen, within the Production Design category. These Awards celebrate the plethora of talent behind the scenes of our most beloved television programmes and raise awareness for the sheer amount of hard work and dedication it takes to bring them to fruition. In what has been another fantastic year for British television, the nominated designers in this category have amazed us by masterminding the most awe-inspiring worlds, allowing us to truly lose ourselves in a character’s journey. Without them, the story would not be told; they inspire us with their creativity and innovation. Over the past year, and many years before that, Microsoft has been hard at work supporting production designers with prop provisions from our range of devices, along with software and gaming clearances to enable them to tell a realistic and compelling visual story.

Autodesk makes software for people who make things. High-performance cars, towering skyscrapers, smartphones, films and television, Autodesk has an array of customers who use our software. With Autodesk, there’s the power to make anything. We support and honour all film, television and VFX artists. We humbly respect and are inspired by the nominees for these awards that represent the culmination of many years of an artist’s commitment to their craft – including working late nights and time away from family. Bravo!
