WELCOME 2020 Welcome to the British Academy Scotland Awards 2020 – Scotland’s Screen Industries night of the year – and what a difficult and challenging year it has been. We are so very proud to be able to deliver, albeit a very different but no less important, ceremony tonight celebrating Scotland’s on screen achievements and our world class talent.
underline the important work we do as a charity. We never take our members for granted and we are delighted that our membership has continued to grow. As always we are committed to doubling our efforts to promote and celebrate Scotland’s talent. Thank you for staying with us in this difficult time we really appreciate every one of you.
When the bells rang in 2020 on Hogmanay, we had no idea what was ahead for us all. The pandemic and subsequent lockdown caused so much uncertainty across the country and our film, games, television businesses and freelance talent were severely affected. True to form we have adapted using our creativity and inventiveness to overcome the limitations of the pandemic creating a safe environment for everyone to do what they do best, create wonderful films, games, and television productions. We look forward to the time when we can all get together again in person to celebrate and reflect on our achievements during this incredibly difficult year for everyone. However, we are delighted to be able to celebrate with you all virtually this evening and raise a glass to all our winners and nominees for what we hope you will agree has been a phenomenal year for Scottish creativity.
Special thanks to BAFTA Scotland Director, Jude MacLaverty and the brilliant BAFTA Scotland team: Jenna Cunningham, Laura Kelly, Beverley McMillan, Becca McDonagh and Karen Rosie for their fantastic commitment especially given the challenging circumstances.
The BAFTA Scotland team has continued to offer great support during this difficult year for the film, games and television industries. They created many collaborations between newcomers and the industry’s biggest names as well as offering various masterclasses and online discussions and events that
M A R G A R E T S C O T T Chair, BAFTA Scotland

We also want to thank Krishnendu Majumdar; Chair of BAFTA, Amanda Berry; CEO and Kevin Price; COO for their ongoing advice and help. Most importantly of all, our list of nominees tonight represents the best in Scotland. On behalf of BAFTA Scotland, congratulations to you all, enjoy tonight’s ceremony.

BAFTA UK CHAIR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the British Academy Scotland Awards, BAFTA’s celebration of the outstanding film, games and TV made in Scotland and by the Scots from July 2019 to July 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on all our lives; it’s been a crisis unlike any we’ve faced in recent times and caused untold damage to our workforce and way of life. During these times, BAFTA has helped bring the industry together, keeping people connected and creatively inspired; because now, more than ever, we need film and television in our lives, to uplift us, to entertain, to inform us, to keep the national conversation alive.
As the industry starts to take our first steps to recovery, we will continue to offer support and help creative talent get back to what they do best: making great film, games and TV. We know there is still work to be done and we will embrace all steps that lead us towards a more inclusive industry. Now is a good time to re-examine the rulebook, not just on diversity but also sustainability and mental wellbeing. So thank you and best of luck to all our nominees.
KRISHNENDU MAJUMDAR Chair, BAFTA
We hope you’ve had the chance to dip into our programme of public events that moved entirely online, making insights and skills freely available and accessible. I would like to thank tonight’s host, Edith Bowman, our guest presenters and category jurors. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the outgoing BAFTA Scotland Chair, Margaret Scott, whose tenure ends in December. Finally, thanks to all of the partners who have supported the Awards this year.

BAFTA SCOTLAND IN 2020 Our priority since the beginning of lockdown has been to do all we can to support our creative community and have continued to work with both new and existing talent to ensure an accessible and connected industry. Film, games and television have kept us informed and entertained during these unsettling times.
We are immensely grateful for the encouragement from our members, our partners and supporters during this time. This support has helped us underline the work we do as a charity providing focus and guidance for new entrants, new talent and the wider industry. Thank you!
Although our flagship event Guru Live Glasgow was cancelled back in March, we produced a smaller virtual edition for our new entrants, bringing inspiration and some much needed motivation during this period of uncertainty. In May, we launched BAFTA Share a new initiative for our Scotland members. As an industry that is so reliant on networks, relationships and peer to peer learning, BAFTA Share offered online skill sharing. We continue to develop our Learning and New Talent programme online with the aim of producing more inclusive events, breaking down geographical barriers and allowing access for everyone regardless of background. Our Career Close-Up virtual round tables and online BAFTA Scotland Sessions completed our unusual, yet very creative year.

BAFTA SCOTLAND AUDIENCE AWARD 2020 All television programmes entered into this year’s British Academy Scotland Awards 2020 were eligible for this brand new Audience Award in partnership with Screen Scotland. A specialist jury created the shortlist of 6 shows for the public to vote on. We asked the jury to consider what television show from the past year got Scotland talking? What programme shone a spotlight on Scotland, not only at home, but also across the UK network and beyond? What show did you see being talked about on social media? The public were asked to vote for their favourite via the BAFTA Scotland website with the winner being announced at the ceremony.

PHYLLIS IRONSIDE Outstanding Contribution to Craft 2020 (In Memory of Robert McCann) Editor Phyllis Ironside is a highly respected member of the industry in Scotland, renowned for her editing skills as well as her integrity. She has been involved in making award-winning programmes across all genres for over 40 years and her CV reflects the best of programming generated in Scotland. Born in Maryhill, Glasgow she joined the film cutting rooms at the BBC in Queen Margaret Drive in 1977. There as a trainee assistant editor, she had the opportunity to work across the whole spectrum of TV programmes for Scotland and the UK Network from Reporting Scotland to major network drama. Her work includes the groundbreaking observational documentary series The Marriage with Desmond Wilcox, Michael Palin’s arts documentaries including The Ladies who Loved Matisse and BAFTA nominated feature film Wasted. Her first major drama commission was 1983 thriller series The Odd Job Man. Other credits include Gaelic drama series Gruth is Uachdar (Crowdie and Cream), Taggart and drama series Cracked. Documentary is the core of Phyllis’s work and she has edited programmes 26
across the range, from BBC Scotland’s ex-s to Omnibus and Imagine, exploring fine art, literature, ballet and theatre. An office bearer on the Union Branch Committee, negotiating with management in Scotland and London, she dealt with cases of sexual discrimination and worked to raise awareness of casual sexism. She also completed a short stint in BBC management and was instrumental in their adoption of AVID. Freelance for the last 22 years, Phyllis continues to edit programmes and films for the BBC, other broadcasters and cinema often working in her own edit suite at her home. Collaborating with many directors/producers throughout their careers, she has always encouraged and guided new practitioners, helping them to fully understand the craft of film making. She believes passionately in the importance of editing as a tool of the film maker and the responsibility that it bears.
