t’s the content that counts, and tonight’s ceremony highlights an irresistible combination of talent, craftsmanship and teamwork that has delivered the most watchable television in years. Celebrating the very best programmes and performances of the past year, the nominations cover the full spectrum that British television delivers – a truly diverse range of programming that has been made available to us in so many ways. These achievements inspire the next generation of talented young people to consider a career in television and with BAFTA’s year-round support, we can keep our industry ‘best in class’. Visit bafta.org to fi nd out how we’re identifying and supporting the potential stars of tomorrow and what you can do to ‘Give Something Back’. Among the awards presented this evening we will recognise two of the biggest names in British television. The Special Award will be presented to one of our national treasures: Cilla Black OBE has been entertaining millions for more than 50 years with her unmistakable charm, personable warmth and genuine talent for her craft; she is an icon and an inspiration. The Fellowship is the highest honour the Academy bestows, and the worthy recipient this year is one of our brightest stars of the small screen (and big), Julie Walters CBE . Endlessly captivating and a master of so many genres and forms, which have already won her seven BAFTA awards, Julie is one the most talented actors in the world and nobody is more deserving of this honour. Thank you to the BAFTA juries, the Television Committee and its Chairman, Andrew Newman, and to the BAFTA staff , led by Amanda Berry and Kevin Price. We welcome the return of Arqiva, our title sponsor, and the Radio Times, sponsor of the Audience Award. For the fi rst time ever, perhaps, we’re actually encouraging you to keep your mobile device on during the ceremony. Rather than using it to watch the latest episode of your favourite series, support your colleagues’ work by tweeting @BAFTA and #BAFTATV and help us celebrate another amazing year in television. Have a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

e are delighted that Arqiva is partnering with BAFTA for the third year to sponsor the Arqiva British Academy Television Awards in 2014. This event celebrates all that is great about British television and our industry. We can also celebrate that television remains at the heart of our society, which is why Arqiva is proud to be central to delivering it to people when and where they choose to watch it. While new technology is revolutionising how we watch and interact with all types of content, television remains at its core an emotional and social experience, which is why it is enjoyed in approximately 26 million homes across the UK. Arqiva continues to innovate and invest, allowing us to stay increasingly connected to content. From television and radio transmissions, satellite communication and mobile phone networks, to WiFi internet access in hotels, across city centres and at international transport hubs such as Heathrow. We keep you connected. Always! Congratulations to all the nominees and have a wonderful evening.

script, but the whole package was wonderful to do. That sticks out.” She takes a brief pause, followed again by that infectious laugh that’s never far away. “And then Mrs Overall, of course.” Her tone turns a bit more wistful. “Can I also say theatre? Then I’d say All My Sons and A Fool For Love at the National Theatre. A Fool For Love was back in the 1980s… Those are things that really stand out in my head. I liked working at the National – I’d like to work there again at some point if something came along.” Beyond treading the boards back on the NT stage, is there anything else on her career wish list she’d like to fulfil?

“I’ve never been very career-minded. I was hugely ambitious when I first got into the business. But ambitious to act, not to be famous.”

F E L L O W S H I P

ven the merest suggestion of being a lofty pillar of the show business establishment makes Julie Walters burst out laughing. “I don’t think I’ll ever be that!” But surely that’s what being made a BAFTA Fellow means? This time, a warm smile: “I don’t think of it like that. It’s to do with my work and that’s just so rewarding. It means a huge amount. BAFTA has been very good to me over the years. In terms of awards, it’s really the most important, isn’t it? It’s fantastic.” Trying to summarise Walters’ career is a difficult task purely because her CV is so extensive and varied. Taking in everything from her iconic Mrs Overall to portrayals of real-life heroes, such as Mo Mowlam, her career highlights reel on Awards night is going to be a mighty impressive one. Or cringe-inducing if you’re the subject. “I don’t particularly like seeing that sort of thing. I don’t know why,” Walters laughs. “I’m always like, ‘Oh gawd, no, don’t pick that clip!’ I’ve had a couple of those lifetime ones and you see it all and you’re all, ‘Oh, noooooo!’ It is fascinating as well, of course, to see what’s chosen.” When asked what moments she would select if she was doing the retrospective showreel for herself, Walters immediately thinks of one project in particular. “Mo is one of the things recently that stands out as a career highlight,” she says. “It was a challenge and she was an amazing woman. It was a fantastic

“No, not really,” she says. “I’ve never been like that, never been very career-minded. I’m not ambitious in that sense. I mean, I was hugely ambitious when I first got into the business. Hugely. But I was ambitious to act, not to be famous, which seems to be much more of a thing these days.” This grounded outlook is something that seems endemic in Walters’ make-up. Her outlook is very pragmatic – even to the point of acknowledging that an actor’s life tends to be at the mercy of the industry. “Oh, there isn’t a lot of choice, no matter what people say,” she explains. “What is out there is out there. Unless you write your own script, direct it and are in it, then you’re at the whim of the business. And from that point of view, I’ve had a lot of nice choices to make over the years. I’ve been very fortunate, I would say. You just do the work – acting a part is acting a part, whether it’s in a pub, at the National Theatre, in a film or in front of a television camera. It’s about the truth of it and that’s that. You do the work.” This theme comes up again when asked about playing a string of real-life figures in high-profile television dramas in recent years, including Mary Whitehouse in Filth: The Mary Whitehouse Story (2008), Dr Anne Turner in A Short Stay In Switzerland (2009) and, of course, Mo Mowlam in Mo (2010).

38

It’s hard to imagine she ever got a bad review. “It’s best not to read good or bad ones,” she continues. “If it’s in theatre and a run goes on, I might read a really good one. I’ll save it for later. But you just have to do the work and ignore all the other stuff. Everybody’s always got opinions.” At least at these Awards, she knows she will hear one heck of a good review, whether she likes it or not. And it’s a safe bet, you will hear her laughing when she does…

Oliver Twist (1999)

A C A D E M Y

“There was a spate of real-life people to play,” she says, shaking her head at the suggestion that it could have been a conscious career choice. “I did three films on television – Mary Whitehouse, Anne Turner and then Mo. That was more about a fashion in television than any conscious choice on my part. I mean, they came along and I did choose to do them because they were very good scripts. But they were what was out there. People love to see real-life people being portrayed and as long as the script is good…” And if that’s not to their tastes, they can always track down Mamma Mia! for a sing-along, which has become a perennial television favourite since its release in 2008. “Well, that’s true!” she laughs. “Those popular musicals do crop up [on television], don’t they? They always roll them out at Christmas. It’s great that people want to see it.” So, is she looking forward to her big night at the British Academy Television Awards? This time, she gives a wry chuckle. “Yes and no,” she says. “Yes, because obviously it’s fantastic and they’re always exciting. It’s always lovely to get an award. And I know I’m going to get it! [Laughs] I haven’t got to sit there with everybody else, wondering whether I’m going up or not. Also, though, it’s daunting, because there’s a big spotlight on it and you’re commented on. You’re this and you’re that. You’re wearing this… There’s a nervousness about it as well.” It’s clear that Walters loves to act but is somewhat wary of the spotlight that comes with success. When prompted about what aspiring actors could learn from her career, she immediately singles out that aspect of show business. “Stay on the ground,” she states emphatically. “I’ll sound like a cliché, but don’t believe the hype. Stay true and see things for what they really are. And don’t read reviews! I learnt that the hard way.”

44 o describe Priscilla Maria Veronica White, aka Cilla Black, as a national television treasure is something of an understatement. Although taking a well-earned rest from our screens for the past few years – she last fronted her own series, The Moment Of Truth, in 2001 – her legacy remains omnipresent. Guest host appearances on Loose Women, The Paul O’Grady Show and Never Mind The Buzzcocks, as well as numerous chat shows, are just the most recent additions to a career that now spans more than 50 years – no mean feat in the world of television – culminating in last year’s golden anniversary celebrations. Black’s 50 years in show business were deservedly marked in 2013 with her own one-off special, The One And Only

Cilla Black, co-hosted by long-time friend Paul O’Grady, which saw her fulfil a lifelong dream – to make a cameo in Coronation Street. In 2014, BAFTA winner Sheridan Smith will star as the singer-turned-television legend in an ITV drama called Cilla. Written by Mrs Biggs’ Jeff Pope, this three-parter depicts Black’s breakthrough years in the 1960s. The decade saw her signed by the legendary Brian Epstein and she notched up 17 consecutive Top 40 singles chart hits, including two number ones, ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’ and ‘You’re My World’. “I started out as a singer,” says Black, speaking with that oh-so familiar Liverpudlian twang. “I’m really thrilled that Sheridan Smith is going to be playing me in a drama about my early life, because there’s a whole generation that doesn’t know that I sang.”

Blind Date (1985-2003)

Shortly after her second number one, Black was given her own variety show, simply titled Cilla, which ran until 1976. “I have always said television found me, I didn’t find television. As far back as Juke Box Jury, I was invited time and time again to be on the panel. Not only did they find my accent intriguing, but I was articulate enough to talk about the records. So it all stemmed from there. My first series was in black and white for the BBC and I was the youngest TV presenter-singer to present her own show at the time. The great Paul McCartney wrote ‘Step Inside Love’ especially for me [and the show], which was incredible.” But it was perhaps in the 1980s and 90s that Black became the household name she is today with the launch of two shows that are now firmly ingrained into our television lexicon. Surprise Surprise (1983-1997), a wish fulfillment programme presented by Black and starring members of the public, ran for an impressive 14 series, while the often hilarious dating show, Blind Date (1985-2003), ran for a stunning 18 series (and 380 shows), earning “Our Graham” and co a BAFTA along the way in 1995. “My television career really took off during my attempts to promote one of my ‘Best Of…’ albums [in the early 1980s],” she explains. “I was going up and down the country to promote it, and I did the Wogan show. I stormed them apparently, and the late David Bell of LWT said, ‘Don’t do anything, even if you’re offered the world I’ll match it.’ Surprise Surprise was created specially for me. So I owe it all to Terry Wogan.” Sir Terry may have provided the launch pad, but it was Black’s own natural affability, thoroughly disarming charm and sharp wits that secured her position as one of Britain’s best-loved presenters. Her innate ability to put members of the general public at ease despite the glare of the camera allowed both shows to blossom and attract seven-figure viewing figures – although she has many great anecdotes where things didn’t go quite to plan, too. Her verbal dexterity and friendly rapport all stem from her Merseyside roots, she says.

Cilla Live (2004)

“That’s a Liverpudlian thing, I think,” she remarks. “We are very quick-witted. I love ordinary people actually. I’m not very good with stars. I can do all that kissing on both cheeks and all the rest of it, but I’m not very luvvie at all. So Blind Date and Surprise Surprise were tailor-made for me… In the early days, I would get some incredible responses. They often didn’t know who I was and I’d have to go through the embarrassment of telling them. Sometimes they didn’t even know they were being filmed. Maybe it was down to me; maybe I just made them feel like they were at home. Of course, it made for great television.” She continues: “I think I take after my mother. My mother was more well-known in Liverpool than I was. She was very outgoing. She was a market lady and had a second-hand stall. The first time I went back home, when ‘You’re My World’ was number one, this person shouted out from the other side of the street, ‘You can sing, but you’re not a patch on your mother.’ I think she thought she was insulting me, but in a way it was great. It actually made me very proud.” If they weren’t already, Black’s family has good reason to be proud of her now, as she collects one of BAFTA’s highest honours. “It’s wonderful,” she says. “I’ve got one BAFTA before, but I really didn’t appreciate it then. It was for Blind Date and I was winning awards for everything. But with

this award, I’m really honoured that BAFTA has recognised my contribution to television. I’m really very flattered.” Black remains perhaps everyone’s favourite onscreen ‘auntie’, and shines whenever the television cameras are pointed at her. Yet, it is also a surprise to learn that a shyness lies beneath that consummate professional exterior. Asked what advice she would give to her teenage self, Black thinks for a moment before answering. “I don’t know. I’ve lived a very charmed life, both in my personal life and in show business. Everything I touched seemed to turn to gold. Maybe to be more confident. I was confident, but even now I’m better with an audience than with a group of friends. I still have trepidation when I walk into a crowded room. I’ve got so much confidence on the telly, live television as well, but it’s my one bugbear: to get over my shyness when I walk into a room.” The room in question this time, of course, is the Theatre Royal, where more than 1,600 guests and millions of viewers at home will watch her collect the Special Award and Black will naturally be the centre of attention once more. But she will take it all in her stride, as she has so many times before – as her star turn alongside Lily Savage (O’Grady) and Barbara Windsor at the 2001 Royal Variety Performance wonderfully illustrates. Fate, destiny, luck, whatever you want to call it, has led her to this moment. It’s all a long way from working as a coat-check girl at the famous Cavern club in Liverpool, a favoured venue of the Beatles, in the 1950s. “I was just in the right place at the right time,” she concludes, “and I had a certain amount of luck. Of course, I had the Beatles, and I was happy to ride on their coat tails. Brian Epstein, the Beatles and me. I was quite happy with that. But you have to get up there and do it to sustain it.” There’s no arguing she’s done just that.
