very warm welcome to this year’s British Academy Children’s Awards, our annual celebration of excellence in the worlds of children’s film, television and games. This evening we are thrilled to be recognising and rewarding the incredible creative talents behind the best children’s productions of the past year. A prominent feature of this year’s Awards is how our industries are evolving. For some time now, it’s been apparent that the rise of digital is producing seismic changes in the industry. From the sheer quantity of content that is now readily available to the transformation of how this is consumed, those working in children’s media have needed to carefully navigate this ever-changing landscape, while continuing to produce diverse, cutting-edge content for young, discerning audiences. This year’s Special Award goes to Peter Western, the prolific animator and storyboard artist whose professional career spans more than 40 years. His designs have brought some of our best-loved animated characters to life on the big and small screen – from Roger Rabbit and Horrid Henry to Angelina Ballerina and the Snowman. His work is a testament to the power of creativity and imagination, and we’re delighted to be honouring him this evening.
BAFTA wants to continue to encourage children to engage with the films, television programmes and games they love, to help them understand the range of creative roles available in children’s media, and to give them the tools to explore their own creativity. From our annual Young Game Designers competition to our year-round programme of BAFTA Kids events, our aim is to inspire the next generation of talent. Perhaps one day we will see these young people walking the red carpet at a BAFTA Awards ceremony themselves. A huge thank you to Helen Blakeman, Chair of the Children’s Committee; the expert juries who decided the nominations and carefully chose the winners; the BAFTA staff, including Siobhan Pridgeon, Kelly Smith and Clare Brown; all our generous partners; and our host, the multi-talented Doc Brown, whom we simply had to welcome back for a third year. Our outstanding nominees are shining examples of creative excellence at the heart of this vital industry – congratulations to you all, and thank you for continuing to excite and inspire young people through your work. Peter Western Thanks to animated rodents, rabbits, naughty boys and anthropomorphic frozen people, animator and storyboard artist Peter Western has enjoyed a career spanning more than 40 years, which has taken him from Soho to Hollywood and back again...

his year’s Special Award recipient, Peter Western, considers himself a man of action. “Directors cast animators for their strengths. If you need mice running across a station concourse, like in An American Tale: Fievel Goes West, with all these huge feet treading down, that’s something I can do,” Western says, before pondering: “That took three months and I’m still proud of it.” Ironically, Western got his chance to show off his gift for rodent adventures thanks to a rabbit. “I was lucky enough to get onto Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” he says, “which opened doors. When [Steven] Spielberg wanted to get into animation more, they asked me to come onboard Amblimation. It was great.” As a boy weaned on the Beano and The Dandy, Western’s also a man with a wicked sense of humour – a trait that helped him segue into children’s television at the turn of the millennium, when demand for traditional hand-drawn 2D animation was drying up. “Things like Horrid Henry suited my sense of humour, with kids being rude and a bit vulgar,” he laughs. “The director, Hilary Audus, liked the kind of humour I throw into my drawings, and brought me onto The Snowman and the Snowdog, which was a real highlight late in my career. I was working on Tree Fu Tom, and the world had changed… The younger artists working digitally were just flying through the storyboards at a rate I couldn’t keep up with. Then I got the The Snowman. “Initially, it was just to storyboard a gag-driven sequence where all the snowmen were in a race, bringing levity to an otherwise gentle film. I did the storyboards then cheekily asked if I could do the animation… and they said yes. I got to take it from storyboard to layout to animation, which was wonderful.” Other notable mentions among his impressive roster of animation, storyboarding, layout art and animatics work include Space Jam, The Magic Sword: Quest for Camelot, Angelina Ballerina, Fungus the Bogeyman, Jungle Junction, Chop Socky Chooks and Kerwhizz. He also worked on the BAFTA-nominated animated shorts The Village (1994) and Jolly Roger (2000).

A talented artist from a young age, Western graduated from St Martin’s School of Art (now Central Saint Martins) in 1974 into the world of commercial animation, but it was when he went freelance in the early 1980s that he discovered what he believes is the key to success in the business. “I met much better animators than myself, who brought me up to a standard that I might not have got to on my own,” he says. “Anyone going into the business should be prepared to learn from their betters – including their contemporaries. Animation is no longer a cottage industry in a few Soho studios where everyone knows each other.
It’s truly international now, so the chance to learn is even greater.” Finally, Western is a people person and loves the collaborative process of his field. When asked about being honoured by BAFTA, he can’t help but think about everybody else. “I’m absolutely thrilled, but I can think of probably a hundred people more deserving,” he laughs. “They said not to say things like that, but it’s a collaborative medium, so I’ll accept on behalf of all my friends and colleagues. The business has given me a fantastic and unforeseen life. It’s taken me into a bigger world than I could have ever imagined. I’ve met some amazing people, and that overrides anything I’ve achieved. It always comes down to the people.” ¥

Through the website, we launched our first ever Young Presenter Competition, aiming to discover an exciting new talent to front BAFTA Kids video content. An independent jury, including some of the best-known presenters in British children’s television, selected the finalists. One lucky winner, Tianna (aged 11), was selected to host a backstage report at this year’s Awards, but the jury was so impressed with the quality of the entries that BAFTA is finding further opportunities to work with all four finalists. The BAFTA Young Game Designers (YGD) competition, in association with Nominet Trust, is now in its sixth year and provides young people and educators a unique insight into the games industry. Our dedicated website (bafta.org/ygd) offers advice and wisdom from a whole host of BAFTA winners, nominees and members, as well as a range of teaching resources that link the competition to the national curriculum. The competition itself has its own prestigious awards ceremony, held at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly,

t BAFTA, we want 7 to 14-year-olds across the UK, whatever their background, to discover, explore and find out more about the art forms of the moving image; to engage them on a practical and motivational level about the creative processes; and to give access to talent who provide positive and diverse role models. We do this through BAFTA Kids, which provides an entertaining introduction to the world of children’s film, television and games, showcasing the winners and nominees from our Children’s Awards. We offer the kind of content, information and experiences that only BAFTA can deliver, across various platforms. The BAFTA Kids website and the BAFTA Kids & Teens YouTube channel are at the heart of all our activities – providing destination points for top tips videos, behind-the-scenes films and talent interviews with questions supplied by our young audience. The website additionally provides information on upcoming events, creative challenges and competitions and is home to our popular BAFTA Kids’ Vote, the only category at the Children’s Awards

rewarding four aspiring game creators aged between 10 and 18, as well as an inspirational teacher and a YGD Hero award. The creativity exhibited each year always impresses our juries and demonstrates the wealth of young British talent available to the industry. BAFTA also produces live events for schools and family audiences, which include workshops, roadshows, masterclasses and screenings. We go where the kids are, working with partners across the country, including Glasgow Schools Film Week, Zoom International Youth Film Festival, Leeds Young Film Festival, Brighton Festival, Cinemagic in Belfast and a special event at London’s Alexandra Palace to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first television broadcast. We also visited a number of schools in Greater London, working with Place2Be (a children’s charity providing access to mental health services in schools) to pilot specific events that teach important life skills such as confidence, self-esteem and resilience through film, television and games. BAFTA was delighted to welcome children from Place2Be to the BAFTA Kids Red Carpet Experience held ahead of this evening’s Awards. Event hosts have included Nigel Clarke, London Hughes, Lindsey Russell, Ben Shires, Katie Thistleton and Anna Williamson. With inspirational guest speakers including actors Connor Byrne (The Dumping Ground) and Leona Vaughan (Wolfblood ); directors Jermain Julien and Delyth Thomas; special effects expert Kate Walshe, from MillenniumFX; and BBC news presenter John Young. At BAFTA 195, our BAFTA Kids TV Previews have proven to be exceedingly popular with both our members and the public. Children ask the questions during the Q&A panels and are rewarded with a chance to meet their heroes (and pose for selfies!). This year’s previews included Wolfblood, Stakes, Horrible Histories: Staggering Storytellers, The Lodge, Thunderbirds Are Go, Operation Ouch! and Hank Zipzer’s Christmas Catastrophe. And in December, we will be partnering with the Barbican once again on their Framed Film Club Christmas Party, with an exclusive preview of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. Finally, at Easter and Christmas, we host special Children’s Hospice Screenings at several cities across the UK. These wonderful screenings are for children with life-limiting conditions and their families, providing them with an unforgettable day out and the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic film together as a family. At Easter, we screened Zootropolis, and this Christmas we will be screening Moana, both courtesy of Disney. This is just a snapshot of our dedicated BAFTA Kids activities. BAFTA KidsÕ Vote There is no greater fan (or harsher critic) of childrenÕs programming than those who spend hours consuming it. BAFTA KidsÕ Vote gives voice to the UKÕs children about their favourite films, television shows and gamesÉ

AFTA hosts numerous events and activities across the UK through its BAFTA Kids strand (see previous page), with our dedicated BAFTA Kids website providing a key focal point. The site offers unrivalled content, fun information and unique experiences to engage children and young people. Over the past 12 months, the site has run competitions with such high-profile media partners as Disney and Cartoon Network, and showcased some incredible children’s media talent through our BAFTA Kids & Teens YouTube channel. We have seen a significant growth in views for our content over the past year, with support from the industry allowing us to go behind the scenes on some of the most exciting children’s media productions and projects. We also had an incredible competition recently, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a young talent to be the face of a backstage report at this year’s Children’s Awards. We received more than 100 entries from children from all across the UK, all of an incredibly high standard. The finished report will be published on our YouTube channel soon.

In September, Andy Gilchrist, Ben Weiner and Stephen Sunderland had their scripts performed and received onstage feedback from BAFTA-winning writer Ben Ward (Danger Mouse, Horrible Histories) and executive producer Sarah Muller. In addition, three entrants’ details were published in the BAFTA Rocliffe Forum List, namely Diane Taylor-Karrer, Katie Lee and Alex Milway, and Robert Frimston. Earlier in the year, BAFTA was delighted to support the Changemakers’ strand at the Children’s Media Conference, highlighting its commitment to new and innovative content producers. One Changemaker who spoke at the conference was Leo Waddell, who shared his journey as a transgender boy in I Am Leo, the BAFTA-winning factual programme in the My Life series. Elsewhere, BAFTA hosts events for members and the public, including breakfast briefings, masterclasses and panels to highlight important issues affecting children’s media. Over the past year, subjects have included content trends for the under-12s; opportunities for storytelling in the digital and VR worlds; cross-sector approaches to mobile content; and an exploration of the regulations, ethics and creative opportunities of young contributors in factual programming. Finally, Spotlight On… is BAFTA’s monthly sector newsletter, which gives readers a regular insight into the crafts in film, television and games, highlighting industry issues, the ways in which BAFTA helps support careers and key dates for the diary. ilms, television and games are so well loved because of the incredible, innovative productions originated every year, each one of them lovingly crafted by the kind of amazing talents celebrated at BAFTA’s Awards. But the heart of these industries has only remained as strong as it has because of the introduction of fresh blood. BAFTA is committed to supporting the next generation of creative practitioners. As part of a wider programme to discover and nurture new and emerging talent, BAFTA runs several initiatives and events aimed at supporting the children’s media industries. The most prominent of these is the BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Competition for Children’s Media, supported by The London Book Fair (LBF). A platform for aspiring screenwriters to have their work showcased in front of an audience of influential industry professionals, this initiative provides a fantastic opportunity for them to take a big step up in their careers. An initial blind judging process aims to keep the playing field level, making sure the chosen writers are selected on pure talent alone. Then, extracts from three selected scripts are performed by a professional cast to an industry audience, with one writer selected to receive an expensespaid trip and full delegate pass to the MIP Junior international children’s programming market in Cannes, where they receive extensive networking opportunities organised by LBF.
