— BAFTA Chairman’s Message
A warm welcome to the Arqiva British Academy Television Awards in 2013, a celebration of the best TV programmes and performances of the past year. Across the nominations, the breadth of programming and the level of individual performances are as great as they have ever been. From drama to comedy, sport to documentary, excellence shines throughout, and what is clear is that audiences care about quality, and have come to demand it. This is shown by the sheer popularity of the critically acclaimed work we recognise here tonight. The Academy’s mission is simple: to identify and reward excellence, inspire practitioners and benefit the public. But we can’t achieve success without you, the industry’s support – so please take a moment to visit BAFTA Guru (www.bafta.org/guru) and find out how together we can inform and inspire the talent of the future, who will preserve our place at the forefront of international creative endeavour. As part of tonight’s ceremony, we honour two of the most loved, talented personalities of the small screen with BAFTA’s two most important honours: the Fellowship and the Special Award. Michael Palin, the ex-Python, writer, presenter and BAFTAwinning actor whose amiable onscreen manner belies the seriousness of his craft, will receive the highest honour the Academy can bestow – the Fellowship. With an incredible contribution to the medium over five decades, there are few individuals more worthy of this accolade than Michael. The Special Award, given in honour of Richard Dimbleby, will be presented to Clare Balding, one of the most respected television presenters and broadcasters working in the business today. Clare came to notice long before her outstanding contribution to last year’s coverage of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which is still strong in our minds; we are delighted for this opportunity to recognise her achievement with the Special Award. Thank you to the BAFTA juries, the Television Committee and its Chairman Andrew Newman and to all BAFTA staff, led by Amanda Berry and Kevin Price. Particular thanks to our title sponsor Arqiva, and to the Radio Times, sponsors of the Audience Award. Tonight’s results will be published live on Twitter (@BAFTA and #BAFTATV ), and red carpet highlights and backstage interviews with the winners will be published on our website, www.bafta.org, throughout the night. I wish you all a wonderful evening. John Willis Chairman of the Academy

WELCOME — Sponsor’s Message
We are proud this is our second year in partnership with BAFTA sponsoring the Arqiva British Academy Television Awards. Britain's love affair with TV remains as strong as ever; recent figures show TV viewing is increasing and the last year has certainly produced some memorable TV moments, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, as well as record-breaking audiences for the Olympics and Paralympics coverage. The programmes we are celebrating here tonight are increasingly consumed at different times and on a growing range of devices. TV remains a regular conversation focus at work, socially and online. Personalising relationships with TV gives everyone the option not only to watch but to communicate about it at the same time. And however you choose to watch these great programmes, you can be certain that Arqiva is working hard behind the scenes to ensure you are connected to the very best in UK television. Good luck to all the nominees tonight and I hope you have a memorable evening. John Cresswell CEO of Arqiva

Academy Fellowship
Michael Palin —Words by Anwar Brett
— “I wasn’t expecting a Fellowship. It’s very, very nice that people should think that your work has a certain consistency over the years.” —
From the experiences he has enjoyed during his globetrotting television career one might assume Michael Palin is an unflappable sort of chap. After all, his output has spanned everything from the hilarious indignities of the fish-slapping dance in his Monty Python days to the rigours of travelling through some of the world’s poorest countries in a succession of acclaimed travelogues, all in the name of entertainment, delivered with his customary grace and good humour. But Palin confesses that the news about receiving the BAFTA Fellowship, in recognition of the eclectic mix of his achievements in the public eye, took him aback. The award sees him line up next to some of film, television and games’ greats, including Morecambe and Wise (1999), David Jason (2003), French and Saunders (2009) and fellow (or should that be ‘Fellow’? ) Python, Terry Gilliam. “I wasn’t expecting it,” Palin says, amiably. “There’s not that many people who get Fellowships, so I thought this was serious stuff. It’s very, very nice that people should think that your work has a certain consistency over the years. You can look back on it and not be too embarrassed by it all, which is great.” Although he has found success with his novels and writing for and acting in movies, much of Palin’s long career has found expression through television, and he admits that the Academy’s longstanding support of the medium makes this new recognition especially pleasing. And timely too, as it comes a year before Palin celebrates half a century as a performer, in a career that began during his undergraduate days in 1964, aged 21, as part of an Oxford University revue at the Edinburgh Festival. “Four of us wrote and performed the revue, and it did very well,” he notes. “I had a feeling then that if you get to entertain an international 36

audience in a fringe festival for three weeks, and get packed houses every night, that possibly there’s a way of making a living out of this. 2012 Brazil My parents – certainly my father – tried guiding me away from the 2007 New Europe theatre and the stage, but it was what I did best really. 2004 Himalaya “And in the end I think I took the right course, thanks to David 2002 Sahara Frost (a BAFTA Fellow himself, 2005) enlisting me and Terry Jones for 1999 Hemingway Adventure The Frost Report; and Humphrey Barclay choosing me for the Do Not 1997 Full Circle Adjust Your Set series in 1967, with Terry, David Jason, Denise Coffey 1992 Pole To Pole 1991 G.B.H. and Eric Idle. And then Monty Python, the six of us getting together, 1989 Around The World In 80 Days comedy anarchists as we were then.” 1976 -79 Ripping Yarns To think of Michael Palin, the most avuncular of men, as an 1975 Three Men In A Boat anarchist of any sort seems odd now. But we must remember that 1969 -74 Monty Python’s Flying Circus the targets of his comedy represented the pillars of the British 1967 -69 Do Not Adjust Your Set establishment; whether it's religion, as portrayed in Life Of Brian (1979), 1966 -67 The Late Show or class, schooling and other aspects of English character seen through 1966 67 The Frost Report his cult comedy series Ripping Yarns (1976 -1979). Not that he sees himself as the angry young outsider who has now been embraced by the establishment he once pilloried. “That’s an illusion,” he explains, “I was never an outsider. I was from a middle class family, went to a public school and a top university. I was, sort of, part of the establishment. In a way, Python was us insiders poking fun at our little world.” It was the way in which fun was poked that made Monty Python so special, with due respect and acknowledgement to Palin’s comic icons, Goon Show stalwarts Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers. Over time, Palin has developed other avenues of interest, in dramas such as Alan Bleasdale’s acclaimed series G.B.H. (1991) – for which he was BAFTA nominated – and a feature film he wrote and starred in, inspired by his great-grandfather, American Friends (1991). He also collected a BAFTA award for his performance as stammering dog killer Ken Pile in A Fish Called Wanda (1988). And then there are the documentaries. He is currently working on a film about American artist Andrew Wyeth, which follows the whole other career he fashioned out of travelling the globe in a succession of hit travel programmes that rely upon his boundless curiosity and easygoing manner. Around The World In 80 Days (1989), Pole To Pole (1991), Full Circle (1997) and the rest have delighted many millions of viewers in just as many countries as he visited in the last quarter century. “I would have thought nothing could be more dull than Michael Palin going round the world,” he concludes, with characteristic humility. “I’m not a specialist, but maybe I’m a bit like an ‘everyman’ figure. We’re all curious about things, and it’s probably better just to admit that you’re learning as you go along, which is what my travel programmes are all about, I think.” Select teleography

Clare Balding — Words by Matthew Bell
— “The Olympics and Paralympics had a huge effect on us as a nation – they brought out the best in us.” —
London 2012 still emits a warm glow. The BBC and Channel 4 brought a summer of sport to life with their superlative coverage and Clare Balding – who receives BAFTA’s Special Award tonight – starred for both channels. “It will be, for the rest of my life, the highlight of my career. I hope that doesn’t mean everything is downhill from here,” says Balding, who presented the Olympic swimming events for the BBC and co-hosted (with Ade Adepitan) C4’s Paralympics coverage. “The Olympics and Paralympics had a huge effect on us as a nation – they brought out the best in us,” she believes. “The Paralympics changed the world for the better, changing our perception of what human beings are capable of and allowing us to see ability above all else.” Balding is both “stunned” and “very honoured” to receive the Special Award, but emphasises that bringing the thrills of London 2012 to the TV nation was a “huge group effort”. In particular, she highlights the role played by women sports broadcasters in what had long been a male bastion. “I’m proud of being part of an incredibly strong line up of female presenters,” she says, mentioning Hazel Irvine, Mishal Husain, Sue Barker, Jill Douglas and Gabby Logan. “That is a really strong group of women, all of whom have got to the point where no one ever comments on their gender.” Like Jessica Ennis, Bradley Wiggins and Jonnie Peacock, Balding was at the top of her game. And, as with these gold medalists, many years of training had brought her to peak performance. “It was perfect timing for me,” she says. “I was covering my fifth Olympics and fourth Paralympics, and I knew how they worked and how to pace myself to get through the long days.” 44

Discussing her own broadcasting style, Balding says she had “fun with the Olympics and Paralympics”, but her boundless enthusiasm was supported by hard graft. “I tried to take a leaf from the athletes’ book and in the year before do my training every day, with every programme I covered, every story I read and every interview I did,” she recalls. “Games time, in many ways, was the easy bit. Then I could relax and enjoy it,” she adds. “For athletes, that’s when they perform their best and I think the same is true of presenters and commentators. Nothing excites me more than covering live sport.” Balding, of course, had already tasted success as a sportswoman: she was a leading amateur flat jockey and champion lady rider in 1990 as a teenager. A career as a jockey, though, “wasn’t an option – I was an amateur rider so I couldn’t make a living from it.” Instead, after leaving Cambridge, where she studied English, Balding became a trainee with BBC Radio and was soon presenting sports bulletins. Her TV debut followed a year later in 1995 at Royal Ascot. Horse racing is in Balding’s blood. Her father, Ian, is a racehorse trainer, most notably training 1971 Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner, Mill Reef; brother Andrew trained the 2003 Oaks winner, Casual Look. It would have been an easy option for Balding to build a broadcasting career in racing, but she resisted. “I was conscious of not wanting to stick to my own territory,” she recalls. “I was trying to forge a career that was mine, that wasn’t dependent on family connections.” Balding branched out into a bewildering array of other sports. “My motivation was to see whether I was any good or not,” she says. “Everybody expected me to be able to do racing, but they didn’t expect me to do swimming or rugby league or darts.” On BBC Radio 4, she has a long-running walking series, Ramblings, and hosts BBC Radio 2 faith show Good Morning Sunday. On TV, she presents live events such as The Lord Mayor’s Show and, earlier this year, BBC One’s Saturday night brainpower contest, Britain’s Brightest. Somehow she found the time to write a well-reviewed autobiography, 2012’s My Animals And Other Family. “I enjoy variety and thrive on it, which is probably the sign of a peripatetic brain – I need to keep moving. I’m never bored,” she says. In the nicest possible way, it’s hard to avoid Balding on the TV – and there’s more to come. This summer she has her own weekly magazine show on BT’s new sports channel, featuring interviews with big sporting names. She also starts filming a wildlife series for the BBC, taking her to far-flung destinations including South Africa and Borneo. Balding is at pains to point out that she is, however, not the new David Attenborough, although TV’s woman for every occasion could surely carry that role off with style.

CREDITS Lara Pulver Having bewitched viewers with her performance as Irene Adler in Sherlock’s ‘A Scandal In Belgravia’, Pulver will soon appear in Da Vinci’s Demons and mini series Fleming. — Andrew Lincoln Bursting onto our screens as the lovable Egg in This Life, Lincoln is now lead of the most popular cable TV drama in the US, The Walking Dead. — Professor Brian Cox The particle physicist hosts numerous illuminating science shows, including Stargazing Live and the BAFTA-nominated Wonders Of The Universe. New show Science Britannica launches in May. — Claudia Winkleman Presenter of two flagship arts series – The Film Programme (since 2010) and The Arts Show (BBC Radio 2) – Winkleman came to prominence on Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two. — Martin Freeman Since 2010, Freeman’s role as John Watson in the BAFTA-winning Sherlock has ensured his position as a British TV icon, earning him a BAFTA nomination (2012) and a win (2011) for Supporting Actor. — Jon Snow Best known as anchor on Channel 4 News, Snow’s work has seen him BAFTA nominated six times alongside the Channel 4 news team.
Keeley Hawes In 2013, Hawes will have starring roles in both a new Mitchell and Webb comedy series and crime drama The Tunnel. This comes hot on the heels of single drama The Lady Vanishes and 2012’s Upstairs Downstairs. — Olivia Colman Colman has been nominated for two BAFTA TV Awards in 2013: Female Performance In A Comedy Programme for Twenty Twelve, and Supporting Actress in Jimmy McGovern’s Accused. She also impressed as Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller in hit crime drama Broadchurch. — Jeff Stelling As the long-standing host of Gillette Soccer Saturday, Stelling is both a hero to every football fan who can’t get to see their favourite team in the flesh, and an everyman who understands their pain when the results come in (he’s a Hartlepool United fan). — Paul Whitehouse With five BAFTA wins (including Light Entertainment Performance for The Fast Show [1998]), Whitehouse remains one of Britain’s best-loved comic performers. — Phillip Schofield The Oldham-born Schofield is the public face of four of ITV’s flagship shows, including This Morning, Dancing On Ice, The Cube and All Star Mr & Mrs.
Ashley Walters With appearances in Bedlam, Outcasts, Sinbad and, most recently, Doctor Who, it seems the rapper-actor has a fondness for science fiction and fantasy programming. — Vicky McClure Another star of Broadchurch, McClure first entered the spotlight as Lol in Shane Meadows' This Is England. Her reprise of the role in TV’s This Is England ’86 and ’88, earned her a Leading Actress BAFTA win and nomination. — Charlie Brooks As well as her residency on EastEnders as Janine Butcher, Brooks has also shined in Bleak House and Wired. Perhaps her most memorable recent role was as the winner of 2012’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!. — Dermot O’Leary One of the most affable ‘chaps’ on television, O’Leary shot to prominence on T4, before moving on to host Big Brother’s Littler Brother and The X Factor.
