Foreword by Tom Herbert, Hobbs House Bakery. Put your money where your house is. I love serving. I love it when there’s the buzz of a queue, the knocking and banging of the coffee machine, the banter with regulars, and to see my individually hand crafted loaves, one by one, finding an appreciating home and table. I love taking time with a customer to find them exactly what they need, and I love introducing a customer to something brand new. Especially, I love the slowly won prize of building a rapport, and winning another valuable person over to the light side of shopping locally with the indies. To work in the market place, where your name is your reputation and trust is gained, is innovative, lean and alive. I know my customers have built shopping locally into how they live, and they form the strong backbone that will allow this nation of shopkeepers to once again stand tall. There is a renaissance in how we eat and shop going on, and I’m saying, don’t miss out. When we choose the convenience and cheapness of the weekly supermarket drudge, we lose the choice to shop in our high streets, where quality and customer service can be found. You can make a huge contribution to the future vitality of our high street by simply asking yourself, “can I get what I need from a local independent”, and giving them your custom first. It’s a rewarding adventure to reconnect with the people locally who have already invested in making where you live, your town, a great place to visit. Use your pound and your feedback to lend momentum to this upward spiral. Keep this book with you as you explore the beautiful Cotswolds, and you’ll soon discover behind the chocolate box doors and windows is a thriving independent scene. peace and loaf,

Jonathan Smith What a pleasure it has been to travel the length and breadth of the Cotswolds and meeting all the amazing people and businesses that I discovered there. In all areas there are thriving communities where businesses work together for the common good to make their areas a pleasure to visit.
From Chipping Norton to Broadway, from Stowon-the-Wold to Tetbury and Stroud, local people supporting their communities and preserving their local heritage.
The current economic climate is making life difficult for many businesses and I can but wish all those I met all the very best in developing and growing their dreams.
In my travels it has been an eye-opener to appreciate the depth and diversity of skills and talent the Cotswolds offer. I have discovered the most beautiful towns and villages which are full of charm and character. These are true ‘jewels’ in England’s crown and treasures worthy of preserving and supporting.
So please, enjoy this book. Share it with your friends and help us all to help local business thrive.
I would like to thank all these businesses for their support and trust that they too will appreciate the book that has been created for them.

Christian Bilbow for being so creative and designing everything so well! Anne-Marie Cockburn - thank you. Thanks also to: Simon Scowen at Lloyds TSB, Cat Salter for additional images, Phil and Gaye. Cathy and Maya. Karen, Zahid, Millie and Ann-Marie. Candy, Tasha and all the lovely girls at Prama House. Nick White - cheers! Tom and Vale Press for printing it. And finally a BIG THANKS to all of our Cotswolds Indies for believing in us.

the spirit of independents... The Cotswolds is a very special place. I’m pretty sure that most people who’ve been there wouldn’t argue with me on that point. However, the reason we are now presenting you with our second edition is not simply because the Cotswolds is so beautiful and so inspiring, it’s because it has hundreds and hundreds of incredible indies and we wanted to celebrate that fact... again. What you will find on your journeys around the Cotswolds is that so many of the people who live and work there have this incredible spark of individuality; an actual belief and spirit of local community, they really care about what they do and that is why this book has been such a pleasure to work on.
The business owners are true believers in what they do. The passion you find in so many of them is palpable. For proof of what I mean all you have to do is read Tom Herbert’s words at the beginning of this book and you can understand why Hobbs House Bakery is such an indie success story! And Tom is not alone: there are so many wonderful stories, businesses and people who inspire from all over the Cotswolds. Many of them you will find in the pages of this book. As our high streets are becoming ever-more cloned by the big retail giants, it’s so important that we support our local indies they keep the places we live in unique and can help to bring our communities together. We hope you’ll enjoy reading and re-reading this book - show it to your friends and use it whenever you are travelling the Cotswolds. Go and see our friends - and tell them Think Locally sent you. See you next time!

Think locally... once upon a... Ok, we’re not a company full of goody-twoshoes (far from it) but like lots of other people we were getting fed up with the proliferation of retail giants popping up in our local communities and the number of independents closing down. It was getting to the point where every High Street was turning into a clone of another and we wanted to do something that might make a difference; something that stood up for our indies...
support your indies...
champion of independents
We’re not saying all indies are perfect - they’re not - and for us that’s part of their appeal; it’s the reason why we urge people to support and use them because being unique should be celebrated.
Getting people to use independent businesses more regularly is not an easy task, because we all live such busy lives, and the message of convenience can be compelling. But we have to ask ourselves - what is the real cost of convenience? If we lose our independent businesses, we lose a big part of who we are as a nation. The landscape of the places we live and love will be lost forever and we don’t want that to happen.
this is our independents day... We created our books as a celebration of local indies - we want to show them off so people get to see what they can really offer.
So we want to encourage people to champion the cause of their own indies - to spread the word about how good they are, to talk about their experiences, as this will definitely help to get more people through local doors.
We always use talented local photographers and our designers work really hard to make sure each page is distinctive. We are trying to unite our independent business communities, bring them together under one roof; encourage them to actively support each other - to take a stand against corporate giants.
8
an independent story mission
our indie manifesto
We want to make it easier for people to find great local indies. We want to inspire people who don’t use them, to start, so we will keep spreading the word and continue to produce think locally books in as many areas as we can.
We are starting an Indie Revolution and want everyone to get involved so we created a very simple 5 point manifesto... 1 Support your local independents. Think before you go into a big chain and ask yourself is there an indie alternative nearby?
We get so many messages of support from people who have seen our books, which tells us we’re doing something right – this definitely keeps us going on those long evenings stuck in the office!
2 Seek out and try to visit a new indie at least once a week. 3 Tell your independent business owners when they are doing a good job... and when they are not! 4 Go to markets, farm shops and cooperatives. 5 Tell your friends about your favourite indies and get them to visit!

Re-Imagine Your High Street is a new national town centre programme run by nef (the new economics foundation) and its purpose is to build on and create new activity on your high street. The programme focuses on town and city centres, the people that run them, the businesses that operate there, residents, employees and visitors. Re-Imagine Your High Street is an antidote to Clone Town Britain, an opportunity for people who have a stake in a particular place to do something different, to plan and take to action ideas, projects and enterprises that will help grow the local economy and enhance local well-being. The Five Ways to Well-being nef believes that our town and city centres should be more than just places to shop. They can be places to:
Connect …to people, ideas and landscapes. Be active …by walking, cycling, playing and gardening. Take notice …of the seasons, of the unusual, of the new. Keep learning …something new, rediscover something old. Give …your time, your skills, your knowledge. These are just some of the ways we think towns and city centres can be different and distinctive. Through the programmes we offer, participants get to plan and take to action their own vision of what the place where they live and work will be like in the future. A place where high well-being of residents and visitors is the goal. www.reimagineyourhighstreet.org

Tetbury attracts people from far and wide and, famously, from all walks of life but it is not surprising because there is simply so much on offer... It’s almost hard to describe how wonderfully captivating and diverse the range of local independents are in this charming and historically fascinating Cotswolds town but we can say with certainty that once you have been you will want to come back again and again and again.

I thinks it’s reasonable to say that I have a busy life, we have four children aged 9,7,4 and 1 and a dog called toast. I am married to Tom Herbert, ‘the bodacious baker’ at Hobbs House Bakery and kept pretty busy with the ins and outs of running a family business. I also have a hobby vintage children’s clothes company under the guise of Cynthia and Betty at the Little People Company in Nailsworth. Our house is always full of home baked goods and often people with empty tummies. Sometimes I have days where I think enough is enough, something has got to give; these are always followed by the days I conjure up a mad new idea that involves making life more hectic. Back in early November I had a dream, that I would do all my christmas shopping in Nailsworth. Of course I do a lot anyway, but I feel that’s just not enough. It’s a tiny gesture really, given the challenges faced by our local town, but if I share my experiences virally it might encourage more people to shop locally and help us keep our High Street alive. I have been buying everything in Nailsworth and the Horsley Community shop, with the occasional foray into the independent shops and markets of Tetbury and
Stroud. I have not been using any chains or supermarkets. I already do try to shop this way, but there are some things I always bought from the supermarket: butter, loo roll, cooking chocolate and tooth paste. There are also things I never bought, meat, fish, vegetables and bread. What I need to offer our fantastic local towns now is my exclusivity, anything less is not enough. So now we are not just surviving completely locally, but thriving. I started out by cancelling the Riverford vegetable box, it felt like dumping a long term boyfriend after 7 years, but he supports my plight and I think we can still be friends. I was particularly nervous about having to cook outside the box, but inspiration has come from looking around me and talking to shop keepers who
49
are so willing to help. They are always ready with an alternative, a recipe solution, or to order in or put things by. One surprising feature of local shopping is it has proved to me that internet shopping isn’t all that. I have done a lot of unsubscribing so I no longer feel bombarded and tempted by the latest offer, I waste no time looking at beau dresses I can’t afford, and don’t have to chase up missed parcels. I ordered some things from the local bookshop on a Saturday and they were ready on the Monday: you don’t get that on the internet. I even broke away from my hairdresser of 13 years, and had a fantastic local cut. As a consequence, my life feels no more hectic but less distracted and enriched with experience and conversation. So I encourage you to join me on this quest, use these independents, we are so privileged to be surrounded by them, they make our towns amazing and vibrant, places worth visiting. They’ll prosper if we use them. It’s a lifestyle choice that I won’t be turning back on. Jump in!

Moreton-in-Marsh Moreton-in-Marsh was built and sits proudly on the Fosse Way, it is one of the principal market towns in the north of the Cotswolds... Its history as a travellers’ town dates back over 1700 years and the importance of this is still felt today because of the local railway station. The famous Tuesday market at Moreton-in-Marsh is one of the oldest street markets in the country and its 200 plus stalls attracts visitors from far and wide. There are indies aplenty in this thriving town and you will find a warm welcome in all of them. The very famous Moreton-in-Marsh Show has to be mentioned here too - it is a traditional one day Agricultural and Horse Show which is held on the first Saturday in September each year. It is one of the largest one-day agricultural shows in the UK and attracts around 18,000 visitors each year.

German born and bred, I always loved baking with my mum. Completing a three year apprenticeship as a pastry chef in Bremen / Germany, I then moved on to Berlin, Munich and finally to the UK to better my English. and real hot chocolate, all our cakes, cookies, biscuits & gateaux are made fresh on the premises using only the finest ingredients.
Once on English soil I worked for a time at the Dorchester Hotel, some smaller restaurants, a chocolaterie and for the last nine years at the über chic boutique Hotel St Martins Lane in London.
Our approach is “nothing we can’t do”, so our celebration cakes can range from a gorgeous authentic Black Forest Gateau to a fantasy seven tier Wedding cake, anything and everything in between.
After 20 years of city life I decided to make a huge change and moved to the beautiful Cotswolds where I opened my own Konditorei (pastry shop) in Moreton-in-Marsh in November 2008.
Chocolates and truffles are our passion! We make all our own truffles, which have heavenly soft centres, and as we use no preservatives, it means that we make frequent small batches, this way you are assured that they are always fresh and divine.

For six days in June, Cheltenham Town Hall comes alive with the sound of explosive experiments, mind-expanding debate and interactive hands-on fun as the Science Festival well and truly takes over the town. The festival is a unique celebration

of science and engineering – offering an opportunity to come face-to-face with the world’s leading scientists and thinkers. Budding young geniuses can get hands-on in the completely free Discover Zone. With star names and cutting edge debate, the festival truly puts Cheltenham at the forefront of scientific discovery. The founding father of Cheltenham Festivals, Cheltenham Music Festival is a true cultural institution. With show-stopping concerts in Cheltenham Town Hall, intimate musical adventures in the Pittville Pump Room, and a feast for the senses in cathedrals, abbeys and churches across the county – the programme of classical and

contemporary music annually brings together the world’s leading performers, composers and repertoires to the most stunning of regency backdrops. In 2011, Festival Director Meurig Bowen leads a programme which celebrates the old and new; introduces established artists and fresh new talent; takes both international and local inspiration; and explores the links between maths and music in ten days of breathtaking concerts. The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival is an evergrowing cultural phenomenon and is the longest-running Literature Festival in the world. The festival now achieves astonishing ticket sales – 120,000 in just 10 days,
and showcases the talents of the world’s leading novelists, poets, humorists, historians, philosophers, actors and politicians as they bring the written word dynamically to life. 2011 promises the biggest and best festival yet - as for the first time, it expands into Montpellier Gardens.
Cheltenham Jazz Festival
The full line-up will be available in the summer but with its signature blend of star names and award-winning writers the festival will continue to attract the world’s finest literary talent. Add to this the children’s festival Book it!, the festival fringe with a maverick style of its own voices off and unique projects with The Times and Cheltenham continues to offer a festival experience like no other.

Foundation has occupied a prime position in Stow’s Square since 2003. The quirky, fun but elegant shop has become a ‘cult’ favourite, and all sorts of famous, not-so-famous, and above-all wonderful customers have became regulars. From the very start, owners James & Gemma Wiseman (former designers for the likes of Mulberry & Nokia), put their obsessive approach to sourcing great product and their belief in friendly and knowledgeable service, to the fore. After just two years this led to Foundation being shortlisted for ‘Best New Business’ (at the prestigious Drapers Awards The UK fashion industry Oscars). More recently, the company won ‘UK Womenswear Retailer of The Year’ at the 2010 Drapers Awards. Brands include womenswear by Marilyn Moore, Farhi, Tara Jarmon, Libelula, Rützou, Hoss Intropia, Hartford, CashCa, Olive and Orange,
Goat, S Sung, American Vintage, Laark and Paige Denim. Bags by cult British design hero Ally Capellino, and shoes by Ash, Lola Cruz and Bloch can tempt even the most hardened shopper! Jewellery comes from the likes of Alex Monroe, Bjorg & Lola Rose. Homewares include one-off vintage pieces plus fragrances by Miller Harris and NEOM, and homewares including Branksome China and Bold & Noble prints. Foundation also offers a loyalty card to their customers, ‘Foundation Friends’, offering a great range of benefits and events. A second Foundation branch opened in 2005 in Cheltenham.

Great hair is about you as an individual, your lifestyle, and your personality. So before we start your treatment, we ask you to do some talking. Then we can come up with ideas and styles that will work for you and for your hair. Our colour palette is virtually limitless, and we only use products whose performance we know to be exemplary. You will find the Old Parsonage in between the Woodstock and Banbury roads, next to St Giles church. A country house in the city, with a lively bar for a cocktail, a walled garden for an al fresco lunch or tea in front of the fireside. The restaurant with its Russian red walls covered with original cartoons and interesting portraits is open from breakfast until late using the very best of British produce to create superb traditional dishes. Pork, lamb and Aberdeen Angus come from the owner’s Oxfordshire farm and fish is flown in twice weekly from the Channel Islands. The Parsonage tea is legendary and reputed to be the most delicious in Oxford.
Dating back to 1660, the Old Parsonage has been thoughtfully restored by its owner Jeremy Mogford, the thirty air conditioned bedrooms have real character and all the up to date facilities expected of a small luxury hotel. Expect Vi-Spring mattresses, flat-screen TVs, crisp white linen, spotless bathrooms. Take a picnic and enjoy the real Oxford with our own bicycles or go on a complimentary walking tour with art historian and resident guide Isabella Underhill.

TL: What did you want to be when you were growing up in Jersey? EW: A horse vet. Horses were my life before I discovered flowers! TL: So how did you come to be a successful florist? EW: I used to work in events, but it was always the flowers that inspired me. I decided to follow my passion, did my training in London with Jane Packer, and then five years ago I started up my own business here in Oxford. TL: What do you enjoy most about what you do? EW: Getting to know my clients: finding out what they love and then producing something beyond their expectations - I love to create beautiful things. It’s the process of transforming a blank canvas into something
breathtaking that gives me absolute pleasure – whether it’s a wedding venue or an elegant bouquet of flowers. It’s the same for the rest of my staff too; we all take absolute pride in what we do. There’s a reason I put my name above the door and that is because I believe that it all comes down to personal service. My clients get to know my staff as well as me, so there’s always trust, and that is what we strive towards every time. TL: Where do you get your inspiration? EW: My Mother is an Interior Designer and she has definitely influenced the way I approach and look at things, but I always take inspiration from my clients. TL: Does Emma Walker Flowers have a typical client? EW: No. We offer bespoke event styling: from intimate dinner parties for four to
183
marquee weddings in the Cotswolds right through to corporate events for 1000’s. I think you can best sum it up by saying – “from simple and classic to opulent and lavish, we always provide absolute elegance”. TL: If there is one thing that you would like people to know about EWF what would it be? EW: That we offer all of the style, creativity and personal service that you might come to expect from a top London florist without the scary price tags! It’s the beauty of being a local florist. TL: Finally Emma, do you have a favourite indie? EW: There are so many! I guess I would have to say that here on South Parade there are loads of great independents that tempt you with dangerously good shopping or wine! TL: Thanks Emma.

Creative landscape and garden design for any setting
Inspirational and dramatic planting for maximum impact
Imaginative responses to your requirements and your site
I am a garden designer offering exciting contemporary garden and landscape design from my base in Oxford, developing sustainable, site-appropriate solutions suited to the space and the needs of the client. The history of the site, the people who use and have used it, the tension between formality and romanticism and the juxtaposition of modern and antique all inform my approach to design - the garden is a living, changing response to all of these contrasts, evolving its own story as it grows. In its many varied forms the garden has been a place of physical and spiritual refreshment, solace and recreation for thousands of years – perhaps the need for these has never been greater than in the lives we lead today.

Oxford was my first love, close to Le Manoir in a town that I now call home. Two houses in the Jericho area of the city formed the base for the building of what was then called Petit Blanc. Not a classical Brasserie in the true sense of the word, it is split into two main rooms and a small private dining room. This gives it an intimate and bubbly atmosphere. The first room has light from three sides, bathing diners throughout the day whilst the
back room has a view on my little garden. This Garden Room is available for private hire and can accommodate up to 110 guests. The small Salon Prive holds about 12 people and it pleases me to see it often used for family celebrations, and hearing the noise spilling out into the main restaurant. Most Sunday I have lunch here, chez moi.

Do you agree with us and think that we all need to do more to support our local indies? If your answer is yes, then you are already part of our indie revolution.
We are always looking for like-minded and creative people to contribute and join our team, so if you are interested we are always happy to have a chat.
Is there an independent business you really think should be in our next Cotswolds book? Perhaps there’s an indie quietly going about their business who is doing something you think everyone should know about?
