2 In the world of music it’s the second album that’s generally regarded as the tricky one. can the magic that made the debut a success be repeated, was it a fluke, are we looking at one-hit wonders?

I can honestly say that those thoughts crossed my mind as we started our second book... for about a minute. you see, the reaction to the first ‘independent’s day’ was so positive that we were determined to make the next one even better.

with this volume we’ve explored more of oxfordshire, and in doing so, discovered loads of exciting, and interesting ‘indies’ for you to visit - check out our glimpses into woodstock, witney, bicester and thame - we know you’ll like what we’ve found.

new features include: some fascinating portraits on a number of independent business owners, thanks to a collaborative effort with the always-innovative oxford muse. there’s also some great interviews and articles; plus showcase work by very talented local artists. you’ll recognise the right honourable author of the witney foreword - a special thanks to him, and to theodore zeldin for the foreword to this book. finally, I’d like to pay tribute to some very gifted, and very local, photographers who gave up their time to help make this book look so amazing: nick, seb, susie and harley - thank you!! our purpose remains the same....

Preface By Dr.Theodore Zeldin CBE President of the Oxford Muse Foundation If you want to discover what makes Oxford unique, apart from its university and other large institutions, then this is the book for you. If you want to enjoy the special flavour that many original personalities give the city, then this is an invitation to join in an adventure only a few minutes from your doorstep. This book is a new kind of guide to the services or entertainments Oxford has to offer.You will find here a companion to help you discover surprises in your everyday comings and goings.

We are introducing you to the independent traders and professionals of Oxford, who pride themselves on treating every customer as an individual, because they themselves wish to be recognised for their own individuality. We want this book to become a kind of passport that will open up new opportunities, enhancing social relationships in city life and giving you a richer human experience.

This volume was born from a series of accidental meetings of people who are interested in people. When Paul Madison, a musician-song writer met Andrew Topping, a graphic designer, they discovered how they could earn their living in a more satisfying way, free from the pressures of over-demanding employers. They became independent creators in the service of what they valued most, which was a sociable local life, and they have made this book to celebrate the contribution of independents of every occupation.

Their first book was made up entirely of pictures. In this second version, the story of how they

overcame the hurdles in their way has been added, and the stories of others too, whose businesses are featured here. That is the result of another accidental meeting, with two members of the Oxford Muse Foundation, Kim Hammond and Kate Stewart, It is a charity dedicated to improving personal, professional and intercultural relationships, which has developed an original method to help individuals say what they would like the world to know about them. Who are your neighbours?

Who are the anonymous strangers who fill Oxford’s shops?

How can you choose from among them those whom you can trust, who could be useful to you, and 4

who are interesting as individuals also? Cities do not have to be collections of shadows who pass each other by in silence. The silence is of course a boon if you want to be left alone, or if you are in a hurry. But it is less so when you have needs that can only be satisfied by sympathy and understanding rather than mere technical skill.

Whether you are or are not one of the 48% of Britons who dream of becoming self-employed and having their own business, you cannot be indifferent to those who succeed in setting up on their own and who have extraordinary stories to tell. Two thirds of

But to Buy Locally does not necessarily mean to confine oneself to local produce, though it does that. A small independent is sometimes an adventurer into distant markets, picking up rare objects from independent craftsmen all over the world. Buying locally can mean choosing differently and having more influence on what is sold.

And it is of course a contribution to minimising waste and pollution.

Independents do not just give a city or a street much of its unique character and distinctiveness.

They are also able to listen to their customers and fulfil their peculiar desires much more readily than supermarkets and international firms which depend on bulk buying and a predictable uniformity. Independents work hard to appeal to those who want to be different, who like unusual products, or products in less standardised quantities, who enjoy making a visit to a shop into a social occasion, who want to develop friendships and not just to buy things. So independents are part of the local community in a way that big business cannot be. Their managers do not get transferred to larger stores in bigger cities; they have come to

There was a time when tradesmen lived above their shops, and you got to know their family and were even invited to supper with them.

Tradesmen knew who you were, and almost every purchase was on credit, but without formality, because giving and accepting credit was a way of showing mutual trust and of perpetuating a relationship. Debts were often deliberately allowed to remain unpaid for years. When in the 18th century a wealthy customer of an Oxford tailor suddenly paid off the whole of his debt to him, the tailor was terrified. What had

That may be because when scraping an income from insecure odd jobs is the only option for many, a regular monthly salary seems an ideal solution. But when having always to do what one is told, and to lick a superior’s boots to get promotion, then the urge to try one’s luck on one’s own becomes a search for salvation of one’s integrity, even if the risk of failure is huge. This book is about people who have become independent. We want to get them to explain what that means, what they have to offer others, what their rewards have been and what sacrifices and difficulties they have been through. Sharing their experience is a valuable service they can provide, apart from the one that earns them a living. Here you will find a huge variety of individuals who have escaped from being wage earners and who have become adventurers, willing to take the risk of doing what they are most passionately interested in.

That is what commerce tried to be in the past, a long-term relationship of mutual benefit. Big corporations would like long-term loyalty also, but they have adopted mathematical codes of efficiency that reduce human contact to carefully calculated minutes.

How can you choose a craftsman or a professional who does not just know his job but is personally congenial to you, and whom you are glad to know as an individual?

The Yellow Pages and their imitators give only promises of good service, but reveal virtually nothing about character or personality, let alone about how the people offering their services acquired their passion for their job and what misadventures they endured on the way. Our aim is to let each individual speak at length about him or herself, so that you can judge whether using their services would add to your enjoyment and understanding of life.

In 1991, in the depths of the recession Cowley Road was in a sad decline. The city end was particularly gloomy with a succession of failed businesses and empty shops. A derelict old shop that had been empty for 2 years was the site that Clinton Pugh had the vision and courage to develop sympathetically into the now widely acclaimed Café Coco.

Within a year the success of Café Coco was evident and new shops and businesses were attracted back to the area. Pure morning. Quenched of dreams, scenes of the piano played beautifully by a cat wearing orange shantung, to a Bengali poet lounging on a raffia bed. She thinks it was Zanzibar.

The amulet is engraved with the figure of a centaur.

He unties the leather thong from her throat, picks the fig seeds stuck in the casing.

She removes her gloves, finger by finger.

The crashing of an ocean and broken sculpture. She lifts herself from the embroidered bed, the afternoon saffron, kneels to inspect the cracked tiles for scraps of poems as the lantern candles are lit late into the evening, as though stars hung by only strings.

She searches the beach wrapped in black silk, wary of tiny sea-creatures and wrecked ships.

Milk and Bread Come Hell or High Water When I think about why shops like ours are important, I immediately think of those times, of the snow and the floods.

Disasters bring people together.

We got so much praise from people just because we opened the doors of the shop, but for me, that’s a duty. I’ll do anything to open my door. To keep things moving along, having bread, milk, it’s a duty to your community.

Some people are cynical, think you just do it for the money – and, yes, you have to, to a degree: everyone has to earn money...

My mother opened this small shop in 1974, in what was originally a sweet shop. My grandmother had a poultry farm in Crewkerne, Somerset and used to wholesale eggs all over the South of England. So the egg side of the business is third generation now, my grandmother used to deliver eggs up to my mother who lived in Oxford, and my

mother would deliver these door to door. Then they decided to open a shop with help from my mother’s brother Mr Jones, my uncle, who had connections with the River Hotel on Botley Road.

So they bought the property 67 Botley Road for £15,000 and opened up a shop selling farm produce – my grandmothers eggs, and then cheese, cream, honey which she used find locally and then bring up from Crewkerne.

When I left school at 16 I went into farming, working with animals and arable, but when my mother bought the lease on the Westgate Hotel, she left Eggs Eggsetera in management, but it didn’t go particularly well, and she decided she’d either have to sell it or offer it to me, her eldest son, to take over. So in January 1986, I took it over, on a three-month trial to begin with. It was very different from farming but I enjoyed it—it was stimulating, different. I bought 66

the business from my mother for £15,000, and in 1993 I bought the shop property from my uncle for £115,000. We’ve always let the rooms above the shop.

So that’s how it all started, that’s Eggs Eggsetera. It was just a very small shop in the early days, like a farm shop, really, but it’s expanded a lot since then. My wife, Linda, and I now run the shop and the wholesale eggs – supplying cafes, restaurants, bakeries and other shops - which is a side of the business you don’t really see. And we do small buffet lunches locally for businesses on the estate here, not on a big scale, maybe half a dozen a week.

Our shop eggs are organic and local, from just outside Kidlington; and then our wholesale ones are battery eggs. I don’t sort the eggs here - that’s done at a different property. And we supply cafes, restaurants, although that’s got a bit harder since the price of eggs and delivery has gone up.

My eggs are different, say to supermarkets eggs which are bulk bought and could be from anywhere – you know, Spain maybe, Poland - my eggs are all from the UK. I think being more than just the shop has helped us to succeed – or at least it helps, for us that’s having the wholesale side of the business, and adding where we can, to keep it afloat – for example we started to sell newspapers when the newsagent below us closed.

Diversification is important for

Linda I met Joe on a school skiing trip, and then I never saw him again until the following trip, 12 months later. It took him a year to decide he wanted to go out with me. I thought I was the bees knees because my boyfriend had a car: he used to pick me up from school in his white marina. When we first lived together, it was in a house full of blokes! I didn’t like it...can you imagine!

I’ve been working at the shop since 1992, the year our son Thomas was born. I left my job in banking – I worked for NatWest for 11 years – and didn’t really want to go back.

Then I decided it was pointless paying someone to work here when I could do it myself, which is what I wanted to do. I had a little part-time job in Debenhams making curtains at first because we were fully staffed here and I wasn’t really needed—and what with looking after the children. .. But then I joined the business.

It’s difficult sometimes - one boss, one deputy!

I like it - I get a buzz when the shop’s really busy and there’s a queue: its exciting doing it well.

You want to keep that going.

My background’s been helpful – I’ve always had a job dealing with people, in the bank and at Debenhams, so I like dealing with customers.

small businesses I think. I look over the years at the different things we’ve done. Running the shop isn’t easy: it’s actually hard work, but this keeps me motivated, to do better. I want to be successful and therefore have to be always motivated.

I’m also motivated by my interests outside work – I like skiing and golf. And I love gardening. I relax through my skiing and golf. I’m very competitive. I want to excel, to do well. I’ve always played golf, but it’s only in the last seven to 10 years that I’ve been playing seriously.

Joe saved up to buy his mum’s house in Littlemore—the house he’d grown up in. We were married in Sandford church and moved into the house straight after the honeymoon. Joe’s uncle was still doing last-minute light fittings and stuff while we were away. We’ve been happy with our family life. We have two have lovely kids. Emma can’t wait to start working and earning in the shop. And Thomas works here occasionally. He’s getting well known in fact. He’s helpful. But he’s off to university this year to study business.

We’re both proud of how our children have turned out: they’re both well-mannered and disciplined. Emma’s only 14 but she was in the shop earlier having a conversation with a customer.

She’s adventurous and wants to do more things than her brother did at her age. Thomas is off to university to read Business Studies. We’d definitely encourage him if he decided he wanted to be his own boss, set up his own business.

Alexandra Lister in conversation with James B. Salter

He has had tea with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, toured with Oasis and Damien Rice. He is a photographer, musician, hairdresser and, most recently, a husband and father. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, you may have seen that man walking down Walton Street in full cowboy regalia or wandered passed the window at No. 33 and wondered how it seems to rotate seamlessly from salon to gallery to recording studio to general emporium of quirkiness…and at some point you probably wondered why.

Alexandra Lister meets a local mystery.

It is Saturday afternoon. James is cutting the hair of a client to the dulcet tones of his new album.

‘It was thirteen years ago that I first came to see this shop, and she came with me’, he says, nodding to his client in the mirror and slicing into her edgy bob with alarming nonchalance.

The ‘shop’, arranged over three floors, is crammed with surprising objects; cowboy hats

and boots, framed photographs, guitars, superhero figures, a batman lighter, photos of his wedding day and his newborn baby boy, vintage sunglasses.

Downstairs I find poetry, sculpture, ethnic jewellery, leather cuffs and Gladstone bags. I check out James’ literary persuasions, books on Mario Testino and the Beatles - and nestled between them - Daniel Defoe’s ‘A General History of the Pyrates’.

A.L: So I’ve heard that you are a lottery winner indulging yourself and that you once had a one hit wonder! Are these rumours true?

J.B.S: No. I did run music nights at the Jericho Tavern though!

A.L: Why ‘Cowboymod’?

J.B.S: As a kid I always wore jeans and cowboy boots to school, before the eighties, before the cowboy thing became fashion.

Cowboymod was originally just a password for something. When I first opened the shop, my image was all about black, very Italian and sleek. Being a mod back then 86

I should have got a scooter but I got a Harley instead. A cowboy is someone who’s really bad at something, so it’s self-deprecating rather than an arrogance thing.

I’m a bad mod. In 97’ I ditched the black and put my cowboy boots and my jeans back on.

A.L: When and why did you develop your fascination with superheroes?

J.B.S: I wish I could have been superman, so that I could have saved my sister. She died we were kids in a terrorist bomb in Singapore. I should have died too, but I didn’t. I’ve always been into Pop Art imagery. I used to watch Batman on TV when I was a kid.

I used to live above the shop, and when Toy Story came out, I put a figure of Buzz Lightyear in the window. Kids would look in and I’d move the figure around the shop. I loved children’s joy looking in and watching how the adults would respond too. Some people wanted to buy them, so I started procuring more.

A.L:Where does the music come in?

oxford J.B.S: I was first into Californian music- the Mamas and the Papas and late Beatles stuff. I suppose my musical identity would have been punk. I got into The Jam, and then Paul Weller became an icon.

I’ve always written poetry and lyrics to songs.

J.B.S: No. I’ve always been into horse riding, but not English style horse riding.

A.L: And your photography?

What’s the story behind that?

J.B.S: I just want to show you what I am seeing and trying to capture a moment.

A.L: When was the happiest day of your life?

J.B.S: My wedding day was the happiest. The most amazing day of my life was when my son was born.

A.L: Tell us about Noel Gallagher.

J.B.S: I met Noel in a pub. He showed me his guitars and took me to their studio. I ended up photographing them and going with them to America on tour.

Then I toured with Damien Rice.

A.L: How did it feel to meet your icon Paul Weller?

J.B.S: I met Paul Weller many times as a fan. This particular day I’d been in London all day. I remember I had my cowboy hat on, this enormous white hat, and really bad hat hair! I ended up going to the BBC studios with Noel Gallagher to see Paul recording on Later with Jools Holland. I was backstage and I didn’t dare take my hat off!

Sometimes heroes should stay people you never meet, there’s not enough time to ask them everything you want to!

A.L: If you could be a superhero, who would you be?

J.B.S: (Long silence) Batman.

Spiderman. Superman in that order.

A.L: What did you want to be when you were little?

J.B.S: Someone who could make people get on. I went through a period of wanting to be a priest.

At school it was the usual: policeman, footballer, pop star.

A.L: Can you lasso cattle?

A.L: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

J.B.S: California. It’s my spiritual home.

A.L: Whose hair would you like to cut?

J.B.S: For a challenge I’d say Simon Cowell. Oh, and I’d like to thin Noel’s out!

A.L: Tell me about the road-trip you most enjoyed.

J.B.S: The most memorable trip would have to be the journey I did recently, driving from Arizona to California with my wife and baby. It’s a journey I have done many times before, but driving through the desert and mountains was special this time because I was with Becky and Alfie.

A.L: Why do you live in Oxford?

J.B.S: I can’t get away from Oxford! Something always happens to make me stay. Oxford is a great centre; it’s compact, beautiful. I really like Jericho, there’s such an eclectic group of people here.You can always be surprised by Oxford. For whatever reason, I’m glad I’m here.

A.L: What do you think about the Jericho boatyard development: J.B.S: I think way more care should be taken.You can’t destroy history all the time.

A.L: The modern term ‘cowboy’ has intrinsically negative connotations. Would you regard yourself as a reckless person?

A.L: What is your favourite western movie?

J.B.S: Tombstone.

A.L: What are your weaknesses?

J.B.S: Being moody, cantankerous and over-zealous.

A.L:You are many things rolled into one, and in addition to all this, you still manage to be a devoted husband and father. How do you do it?

J.B.S: I am very stressed! There is so much I want to do; I want to do everything.

A.L: Where are you off to on your next trip?

J.B.S: The journey of life with Becky and Alfie.

A.L: Tell me about your latest project: J.B.S: It’s called The Walls Of Jericho Mural. On the exterior of the shop on the corner of Walton Street and Little Clarendon Street (which has been derelict for 12 years), I got the owners permission to create a massive ‘Welcome to Jericho’ mural, featuring all the shops, cafes, restaurants and synagogues. It will be a gateway into all that Jericho has to offer as a community. Each window will have a different fitted panel to represent an area of Jericho.

The Mayor is going to open it and there’ll be a street party. I’ve asked all the shops to contribute £100. If everyone can get involved and feel part of the community it will be a real achievement.

A.L: What is your life mantra / motto?

lisa bw by cowboymod i love this shot because of the situation when i took it. it was my first damien rice gig, in 2004 lisa who sings with him, (most famously on “the blower’s daughter”) was sitting at the back of the stage, before joining him for a song. she was in almost total darkness, the grain & slight blur only add to the feel. i had to work the camera as much as i could to get the picture, i only got this one frame. i like the fact that the watcher does not know the story, & i hear very many different ideas as to it’s content, from a peasant girl to an old master. anyway, there was no flash used, i never use flash, why ruin a shot? just my nikon F5 (just stolen from my store), a 2.8 lens & ilford 3200 film the wine bottle is a prop for one of his songs.

Beyond the garden gate...

My close friends say I’m too open, that I should be more guarded. But I just think that if I’m not open, its not me.

I just hope that comes across in the business and in the way I am personally. I’d hate to look at this portrait and think, no that’s not me, or have other people say “no that’s not Steve”.

I’ve loved gardening for as long as I can remember. I studied horticulture after I left British Airways, and I’ve got a good knowledge of plants I think, although not in depth because I’m not great with propagation and growing vegetables.

What I love doing is taking mess and making it neat and tidy. I’ve always inherited a messy garden when I’ve moved house, and I’ve always tidied it and planted it up. I’m not a garden designer but I enjoy making things evolve.

Gardening’s a battle really. I have no patience if I plant something, I want to see it flourishing – now!

With the shop I knew wanted something old-fashioned but stylish. Garden centres are often unrecognisable from what they first started with: they sell spas, art work, teddy bears, sweets, cushions, throws, and it makes you think – “oh, but I thought this was a garden centre?” And that was it.

I just wanted something that was stylish, something that was different, but still offering the same earthy things like plants, soil, mud – its still messy in here – but in a stylish and friendly setting. The products are earthy and stylish; a lot of the tools are modern made but based on old traditional tools.

Most of my suppliers are small companies that tend to supply niche shops. They are pretty good: they won’t supply to anyone else in Oxford. They keep you nice and exclusive. We do it on a personal level.

Everybody who comes in here is supportive and great to have in the shop. I get on well with them.

I’m building a loyal customer base.

We have wine evenings during the seasonal previews. It’s much more than just a place to come and get compost. People come in to chat and swap ideas. I learn from people who come in. I love sharing ideas; two way discussions of gardening.

I’ve always wanted to be a destination shop. I love offering services like home delivery, and for instance, “let me lift that into your car” – where the elderly lady who comes in and asks if I can deliver a bag of compost to her and I can say – “no problem”.

I love helping people like that.

And what else is she going to do, with no car - get on the bus to a garden centre outside the ring road and wheel a trolley half a mile? And she’s someone I can chat to, I know her name, I know where she lives, I know what she buys. It’s that personal side; that’s what I love and want to give.

What else do I love? I love the customers, the people that come in here, I love being able to express myself with the way I style the shop, I love trying. I love the fact that I’ve had a go.

We’re also stocking a lot more vegetable plants and just lately begun selling locally sourced fresh vegetables – which is becoming more and more successful.

Guitar Man A portrait of Dave Smart in conversation with Kim Hammond of the Oxford Muse What I love about music is that driving energy - you hear a good track on the radio and you just pick up on the energy: it’s that release of endorphins, that buzz. And it’s no longer just about rock for me these days but about dance, folk, anything.

I like the connection between music and memory, the way you can pinpoint a time, a date, a moment just by hearing a

track. And, at least in the days of good album sleeves, you could learn a lot about other things from your album collection; it was almost like reading a book.

I’ve always been interested in the occult - as in the unknown, rather than Satanism or whatever! and I remember one heavy, progressive concept album leading me to a load of books about paganism. There’s 114

also that element of escapism, and once you’re in a band you can live your fantasy, almost. You have to be a bit careful, as you may realise that you’re not quite the Jimmy Page you thought you once were, but basically you can be whoever you like… I left school at sixteen and worked with my Dad, who was a builder, in Oxford. When he moved abroad to live, I carried on as a

oxford self-employed builder and then, after taking stock, I took a job at my friend’s Dad’s printing business: it was quite creative work, which I liked, and I did that for about four years. I was playing in bands all the time, and on my days off I helped out with guitar sales at the ABC Music store in St Clements, because they didn’t have a guitar specialist. When they offered me a full time position in the late 1980s, it was an exciting opportunity, I just jumped at the chance. I think you get into working in a music shop because you love it. At first, for many people doing it, it seems like a very glamorous job, but it isn’t - you are a sales person, and it’s pretty busy and full on so you don’t get to sit down and play guitars or whatever your instrument is all day at all.

Also, a lot of people see it as a stepping stone – they’re in a band and want to make it. I was in a heavy rock band at the time called Sevenchurch that was doing quite well - we won Demo of the Month in a magazine called Metal Forces, we were on the Friday Rock show on the BBC, and we had a lot of record company offers - so the other aspect of music shop work was, well it’s a day job.

Sevenchurch eventually signed to Noise Records in Germany, recorded a debut album in 1993 and went off and did all the things that bands do. But all the time I kept my day job at ABC Music, just about – it got pretty difficult – I just had lots of unpaid leave. In the end the band folded – we had the usual record company wrangle – they didn’t like our new demos and we didn’t want to change direction so we split up to get out of the contract and then reformed but as a different band.

That must have been in the mid90s.Yet it seemed Sevenchurch was always on the edge of something bigger and even now it has a cult following with a

website, we seem to be big in Russia and in Scandinavian countries! We have tried to reform, just for a laugh, for a couple of gigs, because we know we could go out now and support far bigger bands than before. We’ve been offered gigs, we’ve been offered centre spreads in all the big magazines, but we are all just too busy even to meet up and discuss it! I only want to do it if it’s the original line up, and I only have time to do it if it’s just turning up, doing the gig, and then going home. It’s a shame. I’d love to do it.

At the same time that Sevenchurch was doing well, I had become the manager at ABC Music and we’d turned ours into a really successful branch, but other branches were not doing well and eventually ABC went into liquidation. At that time the two owners of the Essex based company Professional Music Technology asked me to open up a store for them in Oxford on the Cowley Road and take the existing ABC business there, so I did that in 1996. This was a really hectic and exciting time for me and I learned a massive amount while working there.

Then a long standing friend of mine, a customer from the early ABC days, approached me with a business idea and some money to invest - looking at buying one of the local recording studios.

That plan didn’t work, but I suggested my idea, that I’d always wanted to open up a specialist dedicated guitar store, for just guitarists, and not a keyboard in sight (no offence to keyboard players!), and that’s what we did in 2001 with his financial investment and my expertise and music/retail contacts, and well here we are! We’ve been here 8 years now. We have become close friends through the ups and downs of running a business.

Although the shop is owned by 115

my friend, it feels like my shop I guess, because everybody associates me with it and I’m there all the time, and because I’ve been on the music scene in Oxford for so long. We sell guitars and associated equipment, and over the years our repair and maintenance service has grown to become a major part of what we do, including looking after equipment for bands like Marillion, Iron Maiden, Fairport Convention and Radiohead.

We try and offer a speedy service, especially on the amplifiers, because people need that, and emergency guitar repairs can be done, but we are always backlogged with guitar repairs because typically people want more work done, it’s not just about getting it going again, they want a bit of TLC when they bring it in for fixing.

So we are always booking way in advance for the bigger jobs. We have some strong customer relationships: people who depend on us to get things right and on time, sometimes in emergency situations when, say, there is an imminent gig and equipment needs fixing. And we are gaining new customers every day – especially with the repairs, people are coming in and saying, “oh I heard you do a really good job, I’m prepared to wait because I want you to do the job …

I love to think that with my customers, staff, and suppliers, that we are all just one big happy family. I also enjoy the challenge of irate customers too, who perhaps got out of bed the wrong side and they come into the shop in a bad mood and I think, well I’m going to turn that around: you are going to walk out of here happy! read the full portrait at www.oxfordmuse.com

How did a woman from Austria end up running an outstanding fashion boutique in Oxford?

Meet Renate Beaumont, owner of Vanilla in Summertown 120

My mother had a very successful dress making business, so I grew up with fabrics and patterns and fashion; but my passion at the time was art- colours, styles and so on. I studied graphic design in Austria and then worked for a fashion magazine in Vienna.

I came to England when I was eighteen. I was an au pair in London, near the Kings Road, for a year. I really enjoyed that time, it had a huge influence on me.

Everything was happening then: music-hippies - I was one! I fell in love with England.

I met my English husband in Austria on a skiing holiday, and came to live in England 34 years ago. When I first came to Oxford I worked in various restaurants, and then managed a very successful fashion shop in the city centre for 12 years. After I had my two sons I thought I might as well do something for myself.

I drove past these premises in South Parade one day and saw an empty, dark shop, which became Vanilla. Two and a half years later I

expanded into the shop next door.

All those who truly know me, know only too well how passionate I am about growing, sourcing, buying, cooking and enjoying local produce, so you can imagine that I was delighted when asked to write a feature on local produce for this years edition of Think Locally.

not share the same belief for the importance of local produce. It is a shame, nonetheless a fact, that we have to have something that we take for granted threatened in order for us to regain a new vision of its importance. This is very much the case in point with fresh local and seasonal foods.

I entered this world with this passion which has never left me, in fact it grows ever stronger each day, especially when at times it might appear that others do

In our affluent times we have become demanding and blasé about food. It should be cheap, unblemished, shaped to perfection and exotic. Oh, and not forgetting, ready made, peeled, cooked and packed in an endless array of packaging in order to make it appear tantalising. How demanding the masses have become, yet under the surface lies a passion bubbling away for slow, tasty, character foods. Cooking was lost from the school curriculum, produce lay rotting on the ground with no one caring to harvest and use it.Yet amongst all this came a rising for all things natural. As traditions looked threatened, a surge of new energy has been swelling, as many saw this as an opportunity to revitalise that, which at times, looked like it may 158

be lost. Special events have sprung up to save traditional trades, crafts and dishes and cooking as a skill is now being re-introduced into schools..

Food producers looked to their hearts for inspiration and came back with great ideas that they are now putting into practice.

The true at heart knew that as fads come and go all souls would return to their roots, and I believe that that point has come.

We have all heard of the credit crunch, which I have also seen headlined as the credit munch, with people looking into ways of ensuring that they can eat freshly grown nutritious seasonal delights by setting up community gardens, taking on an allotment, growing their own in the back garden or on the windowsill and supporting local producers at their local farmers’ market; PYO, shops and restaurants that utilise locally produced produce and services.

We have seen the rise in real food shows, events, competitions and outlets sourcing locally. The annual British Cheese Awards and

Great British Cheese Festival is another example of an event that has truly given British Cheeses the accolade that they deserve.

The Year of food and farming initiative put on activities all over the country to provide children with hands-on experience of farming, growing and cooking food.

British Food Fortnight is another initiative that is an established date on the school calendar. Annually, hundreds of schools use the event as an opportunity to teach young people about food; about the diverse and delicious range of food available; the benefits of healthy eating and about the pleasures of eating quality, fresh, seasonal and regionally distinct produce. Under the slogan ‘putting the “ooo” back into food, more details can be found via www. britishfoodfortnight.co.uk.

Farmers’ markets were a new phenomena, with the first held at Green Park Station, Bath in August 1997. Many thought that they would not catch on, they were wrong and today we have a thriving farmers market network in Oxfordshire see: www.tvfm.org.uk

I am delighted to report that there is also now a distinct turn around taking place as many turn their backs on the multiples and seek out the individual and inspiring outlets. So where do you find local produce? In answers to this I would suggest that we turn off the television, get out of the car, put away those ready made meals, cancel the order to the local takeaway and that we get outside into our community and seek out the myriad of delights that await. Those who seek are sure to find and I promise you there is a wealth of tasty delights, experiences and new acquaintances waiting. Trundle up that track to the local farm shop, buy something that you have never tried before; book onto a wild food foraging course, take a trip to a local brewery for a brewery tour and local ale tasting…the list is endless.

Here is a little helping hand to get you started…PYO produce can be gathered at Rectory Farm, Stanton St John, Oxon (see pg 160) or other PYO centres to be found in and around the area. Why not visit one of our local vineyards and try a drop of ‘Award Winning’ English wine. Delicious breads, cakes and biscuits can be found in The Old Farmhouse Bakery, By The Meadow Farm, Steventon, Oxon (see pg 162) and speciality flours milled by Doves and FWP Matthews to make your own, can be purchased from some of the many delicatessens dotted around our towns and villages.

As mentioned above, why not take a tour around a brewery rather than staying in on a wet and rainy afternoon, Hook Norton Brewery, Brewery Lane, Hook Norton, Banbury Oxon conduct daily tours and tastings (see pg 166). A real treat would be a visit to Rumsey’s Chocolaterie at 8 Upper High Street, Thame, Oxon for superb hand made chocolates (see pg 222) or a local trout farm for a 159

spot of trout fishing would be fun too. Look out for signs on gates offering local honey for sale, and tables laden with apples in bags outside peoples homes complete with honesty box. Farm shops such as Foxbury Farm Butchery and Farm Shop, Burford Road, Brize Norton, Oxon is a treat to behold for home reared meats where their slogan is Foxbury First, Local

Second, British Third…There is no fourth! (see pg 168). And for your Speciality cheeses a visit to The Oxford Cheese Company in the Covered Market – central Oxford is a must (see pg 50) There is so much fresh produce for me to write about that I could go on forever, better though to stop now and let you loose to explore for yourselves – ‘May your table be ever laden with fine local fayre’!

I started The Old Farmhouse Bakery in 1982. With a young family, good, nutritious, oldfashioned bread was an important part of our diet. For years I had always been able to buy my bread at a traditional bakery in the village but, when the baker retired, it closed down. After searching high and low for a supply of “proper bread� I decided to take the matter into my own hands and The Old Farmhouse Bakery was born.

As the wife of a farmer it was not a million miles from our family roots and seemed a natural extension to the farming business. A very simple conversion of the old Shire Horse cart shed made a wonderful bakery and shop; and the old Shire Horse stables became storerooms.

The Gallery, Steventon, started as a shell of a barn and a seed of an idea. HOOK NORTON BREWERY MUSEUM & TOURS

Brewery tours & brewery museum Brewery tours are available Monday to Friday. School educational parties are welcome and are free of charge.

Tours start from the Visitors Centre and last approximately 2 hours. They consist of a trip around the Brewery, museum and village museum, followed by beer sampling. On leaving you will receive a badged glass as a memento of your visit.

Regretfully the Brewery itself is not suitable for people with walking difficulties or children under 12. However, the shop and reception area is able to cater for both, and disabled visitors.

The brewer’s craft is rooted in antiquity and many of its secrets are on view for all to see at the Hook Norton Visitors’ Centre and brewery museum. Anyone wandering through this astonishing display quickly realises that traditional methods have survived for sound, practical reasons.You can also witness the working steam engine on the ground floor of the brewery itself.

WELCOME TO BROTHERTONS BRASSERIE Woodstock is home to a Brasserie which brings a nostalgic warm glow to customers hearts, as the building which was built approximately in the year 1600, houses deeply burnished timber bar fittings and fixtures and the glow of gaslight bathes customers in a light rarely seen in todays society.

Externally,Virginia Creeper gives the ancient building a Dickensian feel and it wouldn’t look out of place in one of his fictional works. Imagination can have customers transported back through time with children in Victorian finery pressing their noses against the window, eager to see the fine food and beverages being served to families. Rumour has it that a cousin of Charles Dickens once owned it, so the connection is quite strong.

The restaurant itself is housed on two floors and can accommodate 55 diners, the menu is extensive and no-one should feel left out, the staff are pleased to accommodate those diners on special diets who cannot find anything to eat on the menu. the Brasserie will not use ingredients that are genetically modified and have written agreements with their suppliers of produce stating such.

In today’s ‘me’ culture it is a breath of fresh air to meet someone like Roy Scott, who gives us hope and restores our faith in human nature. Roy is a man of principle, someone who truly walks his talk, a man whose first priority remains to offer personal and marketing support to workers in artisans’ co-ops.

“The difference that we are making to the thousands of producers who depend on us for their livelihoods is enormous.”

So who is Roy Scott?

the family business choosing to accept an administration job at Oxfam in Oxford. It was he who saw possibilities to empower workers in developing countries with good wages and a say in their own businesses through the development of artisans’ cooperative societies.

Opportunities to sell hand crafted products were opened up through the network of Oxfam shops and mail-order catalogues.

In those days, this was quite a unique business model and is often credited as a forerunner of today’s “fair trade” movement.

With Roy’s management and imagination, the pioneering business was developed to become a significant enterprise but, sadly, after ten years a new tier of management wanted to change the focus away from supporting communities to a more conventional ‘commercial’ approach.

Roy is the man behind One Village, an independent business whose objectives embrace ‘community co-operation internationally; for togetherness; for recognising the value of everyone, for respect and honour of the environment and for promoting the awareness of the interconnection of all things’.

One Village works in partnership with those who strive to enrich the wellbeing of society, to build up communities, to relieve poverty and despair, to improve social and environmental conditions, as well as to educate and inform.

In short, Roy and One Village are about making a difference.

Born in Lancashire, Roy’s family owned a grocers’ shop, which meant that he grew up immersed in the world of retail, which although he did not know it at the time would prove to be an asset to him in the future.

Roy decided not to stay with

Roy felt this at odds with his conscience, being a change that would impact directly against the best interests of the very workers they had for so long sought to support and develop. Roy resigned from Oxfam but his skills were employed as a consultant for international organizations including the United Nations.

Whilst working on a UN project in the Philippines, an opportunity arose to re-visit one of the first co-operatives that Roy had been involved in setting up whilst at Oxfam. The visit revealed that as a result of the changes at Oxfam, this society had lost its largest customer and was in deep trouble.

It was from this situation that the impetus came to start One Village.

“The cooperative members said ‘please can you develop a market for us’, and I had the same plea from other groups. On returning to the UK, I chatted to some of my friends and decided to start One Village.”

The word tenacious comes to mind when Roy tells his story of 197

how two months after founding One Village, the bank that had provided the £2,000 start-up loan recalled the loan. The supportive bank manager had been reprimanded for making the loan – stating that he should never have allowed it in the first place!

Some would see this as the end, but not Roy, who calmly approached other banks. Within seven days, not only had he managed to get a new bank on board, but one that insisted that he needed far more money to build a successful business and agreed a loan of £10,000 to really get things going.

This year One Village celebrates 30 years since the opening of its first shop in Woodstock. Roy recalls fellow traders from those days being doubtful whether such a venture could succeed in a place like Woodstock, but today’s success proves those traders very wrong.

In addition to the shop, onevillage. com came online nearly 10 years ago helping to significantly push up turnover. One Village has always also been a wholesaler, and about 300 independent shops regularly stock some One Village products.

If I had to pick just one word to sum up One Village it would be ‘community’ in every sense of the word. In an ever challenging and demanding world we can at times forget what really matters – and that is not commercial profits but our shared human wellbeing.

Roy Scott has never lost sight of this and is an example to us all – Woodstock is lucky to have him.

Woodstock today The town today is very much alive with an amazing choice of interesting and individual shops.

‘Wake up to Woodstock’ is a campaign by some of the leading shops and businesses to ensure that the town remains a vibrant and attractive place to welcome its many visitors and shoppers from near and far.

Up to 1997 I’d been doing music full-time with my band and I guess I had started to feel time marching on so I started looking at other things.

I got involved with these guys who’d just set up an Internet directory business. It was my flatmate who suggested I meet them; “they need someone to help with sales.” I thought, “they’re working from home so it can’t be too corporate and it might be fun.”

The Internet was so ‘new’ back then - it felt like we were at the start of something, like the birth of rock & roll! The company was Citipages and we were ambitious.

We started here in Oxford with “Oxfordpages” an online directory advertising local businesses to local people.

The idea was to have a network across the UK. We opened up offices in Brighton and Manchester.

I was responsible for employing people, managing the sales and so on. Again, it was great fun. The people were young, energetic and enthusiastic - everyone was eager to make their mark. We opened in four other cities and that’s when we got some ‘hefty’ investment from a major PLC: just over four million quid in fact. Happy days... or so we thought.

We were inexperienced in the ways of corporate business and that frustrated our new, very major shareholders. Finally after some rather heavy-weight ‘discussions’ in the boardroom we went our separate ways.

Originally Think Locally was similar to Citipages: a pure on line business directory. But I wanted it to be something more engaging & creative. And that’s when I decided Think Locally had

to be purely about independent businesses. I wanted us to be on the side of the independent. The ‘indies’ have more interesting stories; more to offer in terms of proper old-fashioned values, and these values are as important today as they’ve ever been—more so. I thought, “Think Locally should champion this cause... become a Robin Hood.” It felt good to be standing up for something important.

Andrew was running a local printing company. I was going back and forth to him with different ideas and eventually he said, “I’d like to come and work with you.” I said yes. We share similar ideals and values. We get on well, our styles compliment each other and that gets things done. We worked on various ideas culminating in the creation of the first “Independent’s Day”.

The problem with the Internet

is that you’re always looking to see where the next click will take you; it’s not as tangible as a book - something you can absorb or dwell on.

“Think Locally” is obviously our statement of intent - we hope people get something from our books and website. Perhaps finding places they didn’t know about.

Hopefully businesses too will new ways of helping themselves and each other.

Think Locally is an optimistic company based on old-fashioned values. Often I see clients and we’ll just sit there and talk over a coffee. I get a warm welcome at most of our businesses and consider them to be friends. This is long-term for us… it’s not 285

about a short-win. Our ambition is to make Think locally the ‘home of independent businesses’; to stand up as the guys who made a difference on behalf of Indies across the UK. I was the singer and songwriter in the band. I was the only one doing music full time: everyone else was working. What kind of music did we play? There were lots of influences. I love ‘songwriter’ bands; everything from the Beatles to Radiohead but I also like electro and trance music. The keyboard player was into funk and our guitarist had a jazz-fusion background but played experimental rock. So it was an eclectic sound—a bit Led Zeppelin, some U2, but with pop sensibilities. People could never pigeonhole us. We played all over the place; had management up in London who got us the gigs.

We recorded all over: converted

barn studios in Oxford, swanky hi-tech studios in London - it was a great time, a real life-experience.

Wouldn’t change it!

The choices I made when I was younger have defined me. Being in a band was all about ‘sticking it to the man!’ I guess I’ve brought some of that attitude with me into the business world. Success to me isn’t just about feeding ego or getting what you want at any cost. In the end, life is about finding your own voice, listening to people, sharing goals and working with collective strength.

My ambition?

Stop taking myself so seriously!!
