hartreuse liqueur is unique, its production limited, but its admirers are numerous.

Born of the savoir-faire of a religious community, this liqueur with its 130 ingredients is a remarkable heritage that combines knowledge of plants, the art of distillation and the perpetual secrecy of its production, despite the vicissitudes of its history.

This ancestral and mysterious spiritual liqueur from the foothills of the Alps has stood the test of time, attracting the curiosity of a great many people with its history and secrets, while at the same time transmitting the humanist values of sharing and respect for nature advocated by the Carthusian Fathers, to become one of the most sought-after liqueurs in the world today, for collectors, professionals and epicureans alike. And for good reason: what a joy it is to open an old Chartreuse… For me, it’s always a delight.

Today I am particularly thrilled to present this magnificent collection, the fruit of the passion of a single collector in the Rhône Alpes region of France who, over the years, has built up a veritable treasure, a genuine piece of the history of this spiritual and universal liqueur.

This spring, I was fortunate enough to spend several days in the cellar in question, the source of all the bottles presented in this sale (a sanctuary, I should say), and I can testify to the meditative nature of the setting. The Chartreuses reigned supreme, the bottles perfectly aligned, in the dark and the cool, the ideal conditions guaranteeing optimum and harmonious ageing for all these nectars.

More than 800 bottles make up this Kipling sale, the highlights of which include just over 260 bottles of Chartreuse Tarragona from the 1973–1985 period, the incomparable Chartreuses “Seisenta” 1960–1965, the rare Chartreuses “Gruño” 1965–1966 and the legendary Chartreuses “Fabiola” 1967–1973. Special mention should also be made of three vintages that I treasure in particular: the Tarragona “Licor Cumbre” 1951–1959, the yellow Chartreuse Tarragona from the 1945–1951 period and the highly sought-after green Chartreuse “Une Tarragone” 1936–1941.

This collection also features the more recent productions of the Carthusian monks of Voiron and Aiguenoire, all acquired under allocation in France in a variety of formats: mignonettes, half-bottles, bottles and jeroboams. There’s also something for those with a passion for large formats or contemporary cuvées I’ll leave you to discover the details of the different bottles and vintages that make up this unique and exceptional collection in the pages that follow, and I look forward to seeing you at the auction on 5 June.

Lots will be made available for collection or shipping from June 17th, 2024. Please note Baghera/wines warehouse will be exceptionally closed on June 24th, 2024.

buyer’s premium

The maximum bid price that you provide during your bidding process is the hammer price only. If you are successful on a lot, a buyer’s premium of 22% will be added to the hammer price for each lot you buy. The successful bidder is responsible for any VAT that may arise on the hammer price and the buyer’s premium. VAT charges and refunds depend on the particular circumstances of the buyer. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ascertain and pay all taxes due. VAT is payable on the buyer’s premium and, for some lots, VAT is payable on the hammer price. In all circumstances Swiss law takes precedence.

successful bids

Successful bidders will be notified and invoiced within a few days after the sale.

Bidding generally opens with the low estimate and advances in increments of up to 10% subject to the auctioneer’s discretion.

The auctioneer retains the right to call bids at his own discretion but the following will give buyers an indication of the normal bid steps :
