With the loud banging of drums, different colleges from Mindanao State UniversityGeneral Santos City (MSU-GSC) expressed their spirit of competitiveness as they showcased their best yell performances in the opening of 51st Foundation Anniversary and Intramurals 2024, October 10.
Anchored on the theme “Advancing Academic Excellence and Global Competitiveness, Leading a Transformative, Resilient National Peace University,” the opening of the much anticipated celebration included events such as the parade and yell competition which showcased each college’s variety of symbols – from colorful floats to their eyecatching props and costumes.
The event officially started with the lighting of torch and a fireworks display, spearheaded by MSU-GSC’s faculty and staff, students, and different religious and non-religious organizations.
Parade competition
The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM) rose from the ashes as they were declared champion in this year’s Intramurals parade competition.
It was an unexpected turn of events for their college, according to Ms. Cyberelle Teves, CNSM president.
“It is the very first time in how many years, and actually to be honest, [compared] with the other colleges, nag-prepare lang kami almost 4 days before the parade, and because our constituents are eager to win, and because of our props, we are able to win the championship for the College of Natural Science and Mathematics,” she exclaimed.
Moreover, the Dean of CNSM, Dr. Jay D. Buscano, expressed his gratitude to his constituents for their efforts in preparation of the parade, from the late night props making until in their practices, “seeing the dedication to win the parade competition.”
In addition, CNSM also received the acknowledgement as the Most Creative and Most Energetic Contingent.
College of Agriculture (COA) on the other hand, was later declared as the Most Organized college during the parade.
Moreover, the award for the Most Participative College was given to the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), and the Best College Shirt was awarded to the College of Engineering (COE).
During the parade, there were three designated judging points, from the University Library, University Gymnasium, and in front of the H building, respectively. #
Mass dance 2022 performances still top 2023, 2024 performances; judges name missing aspects
Lourenz Jay Loregas
With the 2022 mass dance performances remaining as the benchmark for each year’s mass dance competition, the chairman of the board of judges, Al-Nezar Ali, once again noted several elements missing in this year’s performances.
“After the pandemic, medyo nanggigil ang mga tao. I think after the pandemic’s presentations and performances were more...I think mas mataas ‘yung level noon. Bakit? Kasi nga post-pandemic, ‘yun yung difference. Pero ngayon, the energy are there. Pero ‘yun lang, we’re looking for something new every year. Alam natin ‘yun. Competition ito, dapat nag-iisip,” Ali stated.
Ali had judged MSU-GenSan’s mass dance performances for three consecutive years and the years before the pandemic.
In an interview with Bagwis during last year’s mass dance competition, Ali and fellow judge, Evelou Villodres who also judged the mass dance competition starting in 2022, explained that they do not compare MSU-GenSan’s mass dance performances to performances outside.
“It’s better if the comparison should lie on the event every year being presented para fair ‘yong discussion. Kasi nakakatakot on our part if we say something that would be comparable. May merits kasi ‘to. The MSU has its own merits; has its own powerful displays.” Ali said.
What the judges are looking for
Establishing on how they are looking for something new, Ali noted other factors that should be considered for the succeeding years’ performances.
“Siguro ang hinahanap kasi namin is, una, bago ‘yung attack. Kasi you don’t need a story. Bastang importante yung manipulation of costume and props,” he emphasized.
Ali added that although costumes and props are important, future performances should focus on choreography and dance skills, especially its originality.
Furthermore, he expressed concern over the use of hand props, stating it might overwhelm the performance, making it difficult to appreciate the dancing itself. He also hinted that the performance lacked a level of skill that the judges are looking for. “Nakikita mo lang yung mga hand props at extensions more than the dancing itself. Siguro ang hinahanap natin next year, medyo taasan. Kasi nakulangan kami sa skill. Nakulangan kami sa energy. Nakulangan kami sa projection. Kasi compare mo yun last year, mataas ang level ng projection,” he said.
Ali also advised having a shift in the creative approach to avoid repeating familiar ideas and to bring something fresh to the performance.
“Alam mo, ang advice ko, take the risk. Do not be very safe in the process of creation. Kasi pag safe ka, uulitin mo lang yung safe din ng mga things that you have created before,” he suggested.
Tulo-Singkwenta
“Kakuyaw gud ani. 3 pieces na for 50 pesos!
“Kinsa man sunod?”
