COA’s old beach vibe retro concept snags victory despite trials

Armed with voracity to become a champion, College of Agriculture (COA) proved their dancing prowess in Retro Dance Competition as they snagged the first place title wherein along with it are the odds that they experienced to achieve this endeavor, October 5.

This is a big comeback for them as emphasized by Mr. Alchester Tagwalan, one of the COA retro dancers, since they came prepared for their performance from concept down to choreography.

“Last year, pag-announce na 2nd runner up mi, nagmeeting dayon mi sa mga mabilin na dancers for next year ug niingon mi nga we will comeback stronger jud. Gihunatan jud namo para this year wala na mi rason mapildi,” Mr. Tagwalan explained in an interview.

In terms of their concept, they broke the image of the retro concept, which should have been disco, but they came up with a new idea to have the old

beach concept to present something fresh to the audience.

Furthermore, the team faced challenges along their journey just like blocking at 5 early in the morning and on 11 PM because of their eagerness to win.

Kato pud nga time nga ipadayon ang backdrop kay naay pole sa stage pero gi-push gihapon namo without knowing kuhaon ang pole or dili,” he stressed while enumerating their obstacles.

Meanwhile, the College of Natural Science and Mathematics expressed their gratitude after claiming the second place in the said tilt.

“Very thankful jud kaayo mi na nakasulod sa top 3 lang man and first runner up. First time gid nakaangat ang CNSM from second to the last na mga ranking,” Ms. April Sarah Onofre, CNSM retro dancer, said.

Medicine (COM), leaving COF as the 1st runner-up and COED as the 2nd runner-up.

“All of our dancers are pursigido, pumupunta pa kami sa city using our own money but it’s worth it naman. Well deserved and worth it and I know lahat ng dancers namin really want to win. Their determination was a really a big part of how we won this competition,” Kent Harvey Salazar, 3rd year BSECE, the head of the COE HipHop dance team, expressed in an interview.

Mentors sustain championship titles in Lowland Folk, Modern Contemporary dance tilt

Clinching back-to-back victories in both Lowland Folk and Modern Contemporary dances, the Mentors from the College of Education (COEd) secured two golds during the dance night, held at MSU-GenSan quadrangle, October 5.

In the Modern Contemporary dance category, COEd bested the College of Agriculture (COA) in second place and Senior High School department in third place.

COEd student coach and leader for contemporary dance, Marlito P. Dingcong, who was also part of last year’s winning performance, said that they were pressured to leave a mark before graduating since they were in their fourth year at the university.

“Naa ko last year, naa pod ko karon. So, ang pressure gid kay before mi mag halin sa MSU, kay 4th year naman kami, so dapat naa mi mabilin,” Dingcong stated.

Meanwhile, in the Lowland Folk

Dance Category, Mentors aced the event by leading against the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and College of Fisheries (COF) which they got the second and third place, respectively.

According to Jhelyn Lumeran, one of the COEd’s folk dancers, despite the struggles they had faced before the event, they were able to defend their crown on the said dance tilt.

“Pumunta po kami sa point na muntik na kami na hindi makasayaw talaga kasi may na encounter na problem sa college pero at the same time po paid off talaga kasi may times na hanggang hatinggabi na kami umuuwi para lang mag practice,” she said.

She further stressed that getting the back-to-back champion is fulfilling for them since she believed her team’s ability as great dancers with natural discipline which gave justice to their folk dance routine.

“There are some clarifications, since you have the guidelines and as judges, we judged based on the criteria first. After that, there are some complaints based on your guidelines. There are some na late submission of music, not following some guidelines na wala dapat mixed ‘yung music and then ‘yung sa isang dance naman is dapat 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s only, no modern or no 90s up music even if it is intro and base in your concept,” paliwanag pa niya.

Inalpasan ng College of Education (COED)

Mentors ang College of Fisheries (COF)

Pero but I was really amazed and amused, na nakaya rin naming siya kahit malapit na ang score, pero I really praise the lord, also the confidence nan na-aim jud namo ang victory.”

Tycoons won its second fixture in extraordinary style, beating College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) Vanguards, 5-4, in a penalty shootout after left-winger Romeo Talangin scored a banger as the Tycoons recovered from 1-0 down after 40 minutes.

It was a close-contested match under the scorching sun, delivering one of the most striking game since the event kicked off on University Football Field, October 6.

Vanguards had looked to be cruising in a single goal advantage after Kenneth Seroy’s emphatic hit in the first half to put them in the driver’s seat but Talangin converted a free kick to equalize the score in the latter part of the duel and take the game to extra time where the

score remained equal in one apiece coming to penalties.

CBAA’s midfielder Rico Juliano put Tycoons ahead again on his penalty opener but CSSH team captain Joshua Von Diones leveled with successful attempt on the 12-yard spot.

Fast forward to the spirited scrabble, Tycoons formidable goalkeeper Abdulwarith Upahm delivered a clutch save following David Valenzuela’s pursuit.
