Message from The President of The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations This Awards Luncheon gives the BAAA family reason to celebrate a remarkably successful 2010 Track and Field season which I describe as one of the best..if not the best...since my tenure as President. While there were many challenges, the most pressing of which was being able to keep the Association financially sound in an extremely difficult economy, I am thankful along with my fellow colleagues that the organization was successful in raising the funding necessary to ensure the work continues. All national teams travelled without limitations. We are experiencing significant growth in our programs. Increasing numbers of new athletes are entering the program annually. We can confidently say that in 2011, for the first time, our youth and junior athletes took the spotlight on the world stage. Nine national teams travelled to various regional and international competitions, over one hundred and seventy athletes were named to teams achieving more than fifty medals. While our senior athletes achieved credible performances, a number of our youth and junior athletes blazed a trail and in the process achieved top five world rankings and ascended the podium at IAAF competitions. This is encouraging and gives us a sense of satisfaction that as our senior athletes transition out of their careers, a new generation of athletes are preparing to step to the forefront at the senior\elite level keeping the Bahamas presence strong on the world stage of our beloved sport. Many of our coaches are gaining higher-level certification to enhance their skills becoming more proficient in their coaching, taking their program to a higher standard. They are to be commended for the job they are doing producing, top world ranking youth and junior athletes with great performances. If we are to continue

to hold the respect and reputation that we have enjoyed as a dominant athletic powerhouse in the world, you must remain disciplined and focused applying your expertise to produce world-class podium athletes. This 2011 Awards Luncheon is being held in honor of Elite Athlete Chris Brown an "Exceptional Athlete" indeed. He has carried the Bahamas banner in the men's 400 meters for over a decade with passion and pride. He is certainly a model of success for aspiring athletes to emulate and has been a great ambassador for the Bahamas in this global arena. To our athletes, I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the desire, dedication, determination and discipline you display. The Association is firmly behind you and endeavors to support you to the best of its ability. I wish also to express sincere thanks to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, our corporate sponsors namely BTC, Scotiabank, the FML Group of Companies, The Petty Group of Companies and the list of additional sponsors, individual and private donors who continued to support our program even during these challenging economic times. We enter 2012 with a busy schedule that will include the perennial Carfta Games, the World Junior Championships and the London Olympic Games where, we will see a new generation of Bahamian athletes representing their country. On behalf of the Executives and Council Members I wish all a Merry Christmas and ask that you keep the athletes and our program in your thoughts and prayers for a Joyous and prosperous New Year. Mike Sands, President 1

ATHLETICS AND A COLLEGE EDUCATION

A Coach’s View By:

Coach Peter Pratt

Jumpers Inc. Founding Member & Recruiter: Parents Association of Track & Field Athletes

T

The year two thousand (2000) was the beginning of a new millennium and a new decade. Track & Field coaches rededicated themselves to ensuring that all top performing academically eligible student athlete in their clubs were the recipients of athletic scholarships to attend universities/colleges in the USA, thereby positively changing the lives of many student athletes, their families, their communities and building a strong senior track & field program for The Bahamas. Under the guidance of businessman Mr. Harrison R. Petty and Mrs. Donna Nicolls, The Parents Association of Track & Field Athletes was formed as a scholarship search unit of the BAAA to ensure the viability and continuity of the process.

Additionally, the past ten years, hundreds of student athletes were recipients of athletic scholarships to attend universities/colleges in the USA. Today, it is evident that our coaches’ efforts locally, combined with the work of Bernard Newbold of the Parents Association of Track & Field Athletes and Coach Dwayne Jennings of Freeport based “Search Bahamas “has had a great impact on our senior program; as a result, there is an increased number of Bahamian student athletes competing and winning at the NJCAA, NAIA and NCAA Championships. Many of these student athletes progress and compete at the World 40

Championships, Olympic Games; hence today there are a greater number of professional track and field athletes representing The Bahamas. It is now 2011 and the process continues. The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) has many active persons, stakeholders and patrons that support its various programs to ensure the success of the athletes. There is a network of Bahamian Coaches, coaching at US Colleges and Universities that are an active part of The BAAA scholarship search program such as Dominic Goodman at Dickinson State University, Henry Rolle at Auburn University, Rolando Green at Arkansas, Dennis Darling at TCU, Norbett Elliott at Tennessee, Sterling Moss at Loyola Chicago, Fritz Spence at Penn State University, Niketo Johnson at Missouri, Edrick Poitier at North Carolina and recently George Cleare has been appointed Assistant Coach at the University of Georgia. This year we recognized sixteen student athletes and others that were the recipients of athletic scholarships to attend colleges and universities in the USA with a combined value in excess of one million five hundred thousand dollars ($1,500,000.00) over a four year period.

Below we list their names and affiliations that we are aware of: NAME Stephen Munroe Trevorvano Mackey Shavez Hart James Audley Carey Cymone Hamilton Ashley Johnson Travalious Thompson Stephen Newbold Deneko Brown Dereka Kelly Allison Edgecombe Patrick Bodie Devinn Cartwright O’Jay Ferguson Tamara Myers Tynia Gaither Laron Heild

We are pleased to say that many of our student athletes upon graduation became school teachers and Track Coaches who work in The Bahamas education system; while others are in various professions making a positive contribution to our community. Furthermore, at our annual general meeting held in December 2011, Mrs. Laura Pratt-Charlton, Treasurer reported that it will require seven hundred thousand dollars ($700,000.00) for national teams to travel internationally and compete during 2012. This sum is small when compared to the value of the international recognition the Bahamas receives when our athletes compete and the contribution our organization make to youth development both academically and athletically. It will take the financial support of the Government, Corporate Bahamas and the general public to keep our growing programs alive as we strive to develop more productive, well educated and disciplined citizens.

No Kids Left Behind I

In the past we have seen potential super stars surface in the eyes of Track & Field at the primary and junior school level.
