Idyllic, tranquil and luxurious are just three of many words that can be used to describe Villa Sul Mare. This magnificent, “tropical loft” is located within the ultra-posh and exclusive environment of the renowned Ocean Club Estates on Paradise Island.
Villa Sul Mare is not only one of the most architecturally unique properties in Ocean Club Estates, but perhaps the entire island. When asked about the name that was chosen for the villa, the owners spoke about their parents that were from Italy. Feeling a deep connection to the European country, they aptly named the home Villa Sul Mare” - “home on the water” in Italian.
Just a stone’s throw away from Villa Sul Mare, the owners began visiting the One and Only Resort in 1987. Determined to find a larger space to accommodate a growing family, the search for a new home ensued. Originally interested in new condo developments offered on the island, they stumbled upon the land that this charming home now graciously sits.

After purchase, they soon gave birth to a well designed, tropical and understated vacation home. Surrounded by elegant palm trees, this massive 6,000 square foot home, plus an adjoining 3,000 square foot covered al fresco dining area and outdoor space, is perched on 1 acre of pristine water front land at the eastern end of the historic Nassau Harbour; hence its name. Throughout their extensive travelling, Balinese styled villas at the Aman Resorts resonated with them and were subsequently used as the inspiration for Villa Sul Mare. This is where architect Chuck Eldred lent his expertise and brought the couple’s ideas into fruition. He describes Villa Sul Mare as, “a contemporary version of a tropical architecture type, with a strong profile of pitched roofs and deep overhangs to shield the interior from the sun.” The owners were always infatuated with the concept of indoor/outdoor living, “where one could be indoors, but feel like they were outdoors.” After explaining this to Chuck, he was able to design

the home, “as a gathering of separate pavilion structures.” The pavilions were strategically arranged in a loose, flexible manner thereby perfectly fusing the indoor and outdoor living spaces to each other. The ingenious position of the pavilions brought forth the creation of gardens that appeal the botanists in all of us. It also aided in giving Villa Sul Mare what Chuck describes as its, “informal and relaxed character” by separating what would have been a very large mass. The inside of the home was not to be left out of Chuck’s master design. The pavilions were connected into a series of continuous open areas, gracefully flowing from the kitchen well into the home to the master bedroom and study. The interior of Villa Sul Mare is adorned with elegant pieces from the showroom of Ralph Pucci, an international high end mannequin, lighting and furniture showroom based in New York City. “The interior furnishings all have clean profiles and are beautifully constructed of handsome materials,” according to Chuck. The outdoor entrance features a bench, a Ralph Pucci piece, made from one single tree. Desks, chairs, living room console and side tables are also skillfully created Pucci pieces. All interior furnishings exquisitely compliments the interior space itself with its simple white walls, hurricane proof full-height windows and exposed cypress wood, heavy timbered ceiling beams. Peter Noble of Revolver Design based in Berkley, California in conjunction with Charles Eldred Architect PLLC based in New York designed the home’s lighting.

Villa Sul Mare also features maple wood with walnut finish flooring, ipe wood decks at entries, and a courtyard garden with ipe wood deck connecting the guest pavilion and study and central air condition throughout. Villa Sul Mare has a six (6) bedrooms, five (5) full bathrooms, two half (2, 1/2) bathrooms and two (2) outdoor showers. Two of the bedrooms house king sized beds. Two house queen sized beds and the remaining two rooms house 2 full sized beds. Each room has their own built in closet, however two bedrooms share a bathroom. Each room is also accompanied with a ceiling fan, central air, Samsung flat screen televisions and DVD players. The master bedroom’s bathrooms has its own private deck and outdoor shower. The bathrooms are all adorned with Duravit bathroom sinks and Dornbracht faucets. The kitchen of Villa Sul Mare is a double island, Arclinea Italian kitchen and all countertops are of various natural stones from Mario Terrana, partner of Everest Marble LLC. The kitchen also features a German oven and range and accompanies a start of the art Miele dishwasher. What may be the most unique feature of the kitchen is its reverse osmosis water filtration system. There is also a built in music and speaker system throughout the house. One of the key features of Villa Sul Mare is its outdoor space that seamlessly marries the interior portion of the home. Chuck did an amazing job at bringing the outdoors in and making this six bedroom immaculate home feel very, “intimate, cozy, tropical and relaxing,” as described. The alfresco dining area has its own bar, sink and refrigerator, beautified by limestone terraces, courtyards and ipe wood decks. The outdoor space is adjacent to a harbour side, heated 30x20 foot pool with a maximum depth of 6 feet and ipe wood deck and adjoining spa. The house seams to magically unwind its occupants’

What many people around the world knew as the Balmoral Club in the 1940’s is now the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Offshore Island. In it’s prime, this property hosted the likes of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor, former US President Richard Nixon and even the Beetles. After such a prestigious history, in 1995 it became the 408 room, adults/couples only, all-inclusive resort today.
To impress guests, the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort stuck to its regal history in its design. It features impressive Greco-Roman styled columns, statues and fountains upon entry and around the resort property. Guests can wander around and discover historic artifacts and art nouveau touches like the restaurant Baccarat’s chandelier. Also offered at the resort are three levels of accommodations, 10 restaurants, each different from the other, and eight distinct bars.
The resort staff spares no effort on being helpful. Having the opportunity to spend the day at the resort by way of the day passes offered, I (like all other guests) received a dray load - yet not an overwhelming amount - of information in the lobby, including a schedule of both land and water activities and daily events. On the mainland, there are two pools, both near the beach. One pool, the Balmoral has more of an intimate and romantic feel to it. This pool appeals to the guest that simply

wishes to unwind with their significant other in the relaxing atmosphere it provides. The other pool called ‘The Windsor’, caters to guests that prefer to be entertained. Here, a host manages interactive games such as, ‘Name that Tune ’ - where about literally 2 seconds of music is played and patrons must guess the song. The prize? Well, there’s no actual prize other than the fostering of friendly relationships. The afternoon tends to typically be the more active period until the activities dwindle away during sunset. One of the main attractions is the offshore private island, Sandals Cay. Sandals Cay is located just a half-mile off of the shores of the mainland and is shared with a popular cruise line. Sandals Royal Bahamian Resorts operates the eastern end of the island; this is where I spent most of my time. A boat leaves the mainland every hour, or for added thrill you can travel to the island via Jet Ski. Cabanas are dotted all over for comfort, around the pool and along both of its two secluded sandy beaches. Whether it’s enjoying the buzz at the mainland resort, or making an escape to and unwinding in the relaxing environment of Sandals Cay, Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort is a true 5 star experience. After enjoying just one day on the property, it’s easy to understand why it’s the top rated resort in Nassau on TripAdvisor.

Wild Turtles Bucket List Experience [Exuma]

I have a never-ending list of things I want to see and do in my lifetime and swimming with wild sea turtles happened to be one of them. When I heard that there was a spot in Exuma where you could see and swim with turtles I was sold immediately. We took a short boat ride from February Point to an unnamed cove nearby. We were told we could see these elusive wild turtles up close and my enthusiasm grew. We sat quietly and threw small bits of squid in the water to try and attract any form of sea life. After about 20 minutes without any coming to surface, disappointment fell in. Then, finally, a few moments later they decided to trickle in. At first we fed them squid from the boat but I thought, “Nothing beats actually being in that beautiful water with them”. I did it! I jumped in! I was so amazed by their size – never realizing how big they really were. There they were. Two adults and a mid size turtle that, in my mind, I made a family. It took them some time to get comfortable with me before I could go closer. Up close and personal with beautiful creates that inhabit the Exuma waters. The small turtle followed me back to the boat as I swam back making it so emotional for me to leave him behind. Though this was an unforgettable experience I was able to cross off my list, I’ll be sure to travel the sea again to find the under water family.
